The free movement of capital across international borders is now pretty much taken for granted in most parts of the world economy. What would the world be like in 20 years from now if the free movement of people across international borders (where they could seek to live and work wherever they wanted) were to be legalized and implemented suddenly tomorrow?
What would your vision of the future be if
'Free Movement of People'
were to become the new reality?
'Free Movement of People'
were to become the new reality?
150-200 words please.
Ofcourse my vision about 'Free Movement of People' got little expectation to be a reality in the future. Theres many reasons such as, getting a better life by getting new jobs etc, but in some countries, people are restricted to become employees in a company because of factors that those immigrants has. such as different mindset than the ones that are not immigrants, some of them saw it in the academics section, because not all people got the same level of education like the others, and even some of them sees it from the personality perspective, some people nowdays are still easy to get triggered by skin colours, religions etc. Even if many people agrees to this being the way of people's freedom, governments might not be in the same way of thinking, because they mostly want to reduce of what has happened in this time of place such as poverty, criminalism, corruption etc. But if more people got in a country that haven't resolve their own problems, it will make the destinated nation be in a picky situation.
ReplyDeleteFree Movement of People across borders sound really attractive. Just imagine being able to decide where to live without having the problems to apply for a visa or a residence. One year in Canada, the next year in Indonesia and so one. If you think about it is tempting. This system already exists in the European countries, where you can move across the borders without any problem. In my case, I have been living in Germany for the last five years with my Italian Passport without any problem, which was amazing and versatile. However, the people are not prepared to such a freedom now. From an economic point of view, Economies in countries can collapse because of the free movement. Lets take the example of the developing countries in Central America, where more of the 40% of the population lives in extreme poverty. The poor citizens of these countries would go to the United States to pursue the “American Dream”. Economies in both countries will collapse; there will be overpopulation and the levels of criminality might rise. In my opinion, in the case of developing countries, opening the boarders can cause negative consequences. First, these countries have to solve problems like criminality, corruption, poverty and uneducated people in order to be able to freely move across countries.
ReplyDeleteI certainly agree with your claim, Marcela. I personally think that it is safe to say that "Free Movement of People" would only be realistically applicable under two improbable circumstances; one, if every country in the world is considered to be developed and two, if the world is ready to sacrifice developing countries. As an economics student, I believe that the "Free Movement of People" could never be applied in a developing country and I cannot stress that enough. Let's take an example in our own beloved Republic of Indonesia; one important matter that could sum up my claim is regarding the minimum wage or UMR (Upah Minimum Regional). In comparison to one of our closest neighboring country, Singapore, Indonesia is far behind in terms of earnings. In 2018, based on provinces, Indonesia's lowest minimum wage lies in the East Nusa Tenggara with a minimum of Rp. 1,660,000 or S$155 when converted to Singaporean Dollars. Meanwhile Singapore's minimum wage is seven times higher compared to ours, they are mandated to pay a minimum of S$1,060. Imagine if the "Free Movement of People" is applied, how many underpaid Indonesian workforce would migrate, and how would our economy react to the loss of such productivity?
DeleteIf the free movement of people will soon be implemented on a global scale. In my opinion, what would happen is, in some countries will experience population explosion especially the county/city where the job prospects are good like for example the United States since people globally will migrate there to find jobs and if they’re out of the competition, they will be the useless members of the society and will lead to the rise of poverty, crime etc. However, if the free movement are combined with the equally distributed development of global infrastructure, it will lead to more job opportunities as well as the rise of the quality of global service thus will lead to the tendency of people to move to the so called metropolitan area since the infrastructure are globally equal in terms of availability and quality so that the population distribution is going to be more equally distributed between countries so that overpopulation issues in some countries like India, Indonesia etc. Will be ended by the free movement of people between countries.

ReplyDeleteFree movement of people around the globe sounds very tempting, nevertheless I don’t believe that this is possible within the next 20 years. I think that people are still too afraid of immigrants taking their jobs and bringing chaos. I think that both Brexit and Trump’s quote: “America first” are two good examples of how the world becomes less united at the moment. I’m not too scared of foreigners taking over. I’m being a foreigner myself right now in Indonesia. I do think that we will always need some kind of regulation, since otherwise 50% of the population will live in Los Angeles by the end of the month. When I look at this from my Dutch perspective, I would love to see a scenario where we invite more people from outside the EU. We have so many jobs that “we” don’t want to do, but that could easily be done by, for example, Indonesians. On their turn, I believe, that they will be happy too. Since the average wage is about 10 times higher than in their home country. In Dutch we have this saying: “De meer zielen, de meer vreugd”. The literal translation would be: “The more souls, the more joy”. I would love to see this saying being applied to the immigration. I believe that bringing people from foreign countries has more pros than cons.
This is a very interesting topic, I think that it is very cool if the world doesn’t have any borders especially for the workers, firstly it will greatly reduce the disparity between the rich and the poor because the salary in some countries is bigger than the other. Secondly, there will be second wave of “American Dreamer” like people who migrate to some countries, for instance, America to seek for better future. This will also create some negatives such as the population boom, and high rate of crimes. I also think that it will cause some poor countries to collapse because most of their citizens will move to another country to seek for better future. The high number of uneducated workers will also contribute to “Modern Slavery” where the capitalist will try to make use of them and pay them as low as possible because they simply doesn’t have any education to start with. The free movement of people will only be applicable when every country in the world have the same rate of education and very low criminal rate. But before then, the free movement of people will only break the order of the world.
ReplyDeleteIf free movement of people is legalized tomorrow, it will be a happy news for everyone. People will start looking for a new place to live, a place where they are dreaming of and also looking for a better job in a develop country such as United States, England, Japan and Singapore. Not only that, we will be able to communicate with different types of people with diverse culture. On the other hand, some negatives effects also will happen if this legalization is happening which is there will be a lot of unemployment in one country because everyone tends to go there and when they get rejected, a lot of unemployment will happen. Next, is that the space of one country will be over-populated and cause traffic jam and criminals to increase significantly. The last is that the economics of the world will be dominant in one country and the last is it will cause inequality of one country to another.
ReplyDeleteThe free movement across internatonal borders for me is not gonna happen in the next 20 years because even such advanced or so called big countries still have tight rules about imiggrants cause some parts most imiggrants came without any skill or even english language etc, so this means if this free movement across international borders means that everyone have rights to find or seek live or work they wanted happen, a country will find a problem how to arrange this newcomers specially when they don’t know basic country language or skill they need to work. I want to make an example related to this problem which is America, America nowdays faced such a big problem of immigrants because when they arrive without any skill they will become jobless or even a homeless person, but that doesn’t mean I totally dissaggre about every human have rights to find or seek live or work, for me in some countries this will happen if they have enough skill or langauge of country itself, but in my opinion tight rules about this must applied
ReplyDeleteThe notion of the idea is too idealistic to implement as people should be bound by reasonable law and order. The absoluteness freedom should be erased by any government or society as it is a toxic system which will destroy the society itself in time like a ticking clock much like extreme capitalism and true communism. I immensely disagree with the idea of ‘free movement of people’ as it is a radical movement in my personal opinion.
ReplyDeleteHowever, I do agree with the idea of people having the right to move freely by their own free will as long as it is bounded by law and order. With that being said, there should be unbiddable laws regarding borders and immigrants across political entities to ensure clarity regarding humans staying in an area. But I also do believe in a system where the society is open to immigrants as there are more humane ways to rightly accept other people than political agendas.
If the free movement of across the international border exist and will be effective immediately, then there will be a lot of problem in many sectors. At first glance it seems noble and one way to create peace for the world, but it’s not. For starter let’s look at administration sector, if people are allowed to live to where ever they want than how the movement going to decide the citizenship. When people want to change their citizenship from one place to another there will be a process by the government of that area. Imagine if there are a lot of people suddenly move form on country to another, it will become a nightmare for the administration worker. And all that assuming all the country agree to use the same procedure. Its necessary to decide the citizenship so the government can decide who to tax and who get the benefit of that tax. From that perspective we can get the idea that this kind of movement if implemented suddenly will have a lot of problem assuming its being agree by all country in the world, which will not happen any time soon.
ReplyDeleteAnyone in power who decided to allow the free movement of people to happen tomorrow must be someone so brave that he or she might not considering the possible cause of it. I’m not saying that this is something negative but I think we all agree that this is a very risky move to make. Nations have developed its state through complicated processes where rules were made according to its development. If let’s say someone from a country decided to move out and settled in another country regardless the existing rules of that country or even his or her personal country, I would say that it is somehow disrespectful towards both countries. Maybe some people suffer in a lot of ways in their country and if they ever want to move out, they can still do it legally. They can still follow the official procedures from their country. It would be a lot safer and wouldn’t be a burden for any country involved.
ReplyDeleteIf the idea of ‘Free Movement of People’ comes to reality, people will continuously migrating from one place to another. As the technology industry develop rapidly, there are a lot of new innovations in term of transportation. Hence, people have more access to places in a shorter time. There are various reasons why people consider to constantly migrate with the main purpose of improving their quality of life. The reasons could be job opportunities, better education, avoiding conflicts, better healthcare and sanitation, etc. The thing is that people rarely appreciate the life they are having and this pushes them to move frequently. Free movement of people would be an opportunity for people to fulfill their unlimited wants and keep the migration on rotating. In contrast, there are also some disadvantages caused by free movement of people. One of the disadvantages is security threats. Since people can go in and out of a country easily, we cannot filter the migrants which causes a higher chance of terrorism that put the safety of the country at risk. In conclusion, there are advantages and disadvantages of the free movement of people so we have to think carefully before we decide to travel around.
ReplyDeleteThis is a fascinating topic. I believe if the world doesn’t have any borders it will be amazing and also helpful for the people who are working. If this thing happens, it will decrease the gap between the rich and the poor in a large amount because of the different earnings or wages all over the world, where some countries have bigger wages or earnings than the others. But I also think that if there are no borders in the world, there will be a lot of negative impacts. If there are no borders in the world, the number of population on some countries will be over capacity because many workers will move to the country that have much more salary than others. This over capacity will rise the rate of crimes and the country will be less safe. I also believe that the poor countries will seize to exist because the people who used to live in the poor country will move to another country, where there are bigger income or salary, to look for a better life in the future. The high number of uneducated laborers on the poor country will increase too. I believe the free movement of the people will become possible if the countries all over the world are equal. Which are equal on the education, welfare, and technology. It is impossible to have the free movement of the people now because the current state of the world is far from equal.
ReplyDeleteThe idea of being able to move across international borders so easily for work or as a place to reside or just for an indefinite period of vacation (with certain permits) intrigues me, profusely. Imagine being able to stay in one country and in another in just a few weeks time. Without significant complications like applying for visas or carrying passports at internal borders. This however happens only between countries joined in the European Union as well as some African countries. Free-movement to an extent is beneficial as it deals with allowing free movement of capital, goods and services across designated country borders. This, is an astute measure of cooperation for collective good. An example is, workers migrating from countries where jobs are scarce to others where jobs are abundant, and where labour is in short supply. In recent years, workers from Southern European countries, which have been hit hardest by the Eurozone crisis, have been heading North to find employment. This means that the average unemployment rate in Europe is lowered, leading to sufficient growth in it’s economy. Free movement is also expected to discourage conflicts between countries in Europe. However, the topic of free movement has also invited some controversions. Free movement of labour can cause large flows of people from low income to high income regions, causing some countries to lose their highly-skilled labours, thus less income for that specific country. For some cases, if the skilled youth migrates, these countries might experience ageing population. Hence, creates extra burden for the local government as they have to provide more welfare and pensions. Free movement of people will also lead to fall in wages for native-born workers, this would then provoke mass protests and riots. Environmental-wise, free movements indicates that there will be a rapid rise in population, which leads to a decline in quality of life because it increases population density and congestion which has both economic and social costs. As for 20 years from now, I don’t see the world as an open society, granting mass free movements.
ReplyDeleteIn my humble opinion the free movement of people across countries is a major security issue. Even though a lot of people will get huge benefits from the regulation, it will only be a horrible solution for the global poverty issue. The fact that moving across countries and work freely means more people from the poorer countries will move to richer countries in search of a better life, creating a major competitive job market in those destination countries. In addition to competing with fellow immigrants, they would also have to compete with the previous inhabitants of those destination countries. When the job market stay relatively static, and there are surge of new job seeker, the number of jobless people will also surge and indirectly increase criminality. Yet the major impact will also affect the countries left behind. The loss of major human resource strip those countries from their production capability, and their economy will fall even more. We can reflects on the case of Puerto Rico, as more people left the island to the main land USA in search of better life, the people that are left behind are those who do not have the resource to move, those who are unskilled, and those who are unable to work, the impact is their economy continues to get worse. From these arguments that with the current world status, a free movement policy would be a nightmare.
ReplyDeleteThe idea of physical freedom of movement is frightening, at least for me. For workers, this movement might be an opportunity for them to work in another place and very likely to get higher income. For businessmen and entrepreneur, free movement is the perfect time for them to expand their business. People will start migrating and start to live in another country and will affect the growth of population. The growth of population could have a negative effect on developing countries. According to weforum.org, freedom of movement first came after the Second World War. The aim was to encourage workers to be mobile and thus improve the economy. But that was decades ago, nowadays we have the technology to enable us to be mobile without actually moving. I think the idea of freedom of movement does not have to be physical. We can work with clients from overseas just through emails, or now we can hold a conference through video calls. In fact, this technology advances are basically free for everyone who has the ability to access them. Therefore, I think that we have been performing freedom of movement all along.
ReplyDeleteFree Movement of Labor has been applied in the European Union. The EU system could be successfully established because of the narrow prosperity gap, which means the difference of the economic conditions is not really contrast in the continent. But what will it be when it happens to all countries in the world?
ReplyDeleteIn the point of view of the workers as an individual, they will have wider options of job fields. In Indonesia for instance, the supply of blue-collar labours is bigger than its demand. They could seek for occupation in a country which has more job vacancy and higher salary throughout the Free Movement of Labor.
The nation as a whole might see this as a warning, especially for the developing and under-developed countries since they have less highly educated people compared to the developed countries. But otherwise, this should trigger the governments to encourage education and training for the citizen, thus they will be able to compete with people abroad.
As the main question is “what would the world be like in 20 years from now if the free movement people across international borders were to be legalized and implemented suddenly.”, we are encouraged to think what is the impact if the movement is happen in sudden. This movement might be not suitable to be applied to every country. General speaking, for undeveloped country and developing country where the unemployment rate is quite high the movement could be controversial due to the possibility of losing employment for the people in the country itself. But it could be a good idea to be implemented to the developed country. The reason is the people in the developed country is ready to this kind of movement and this movement could bring a new competition among the people where it leads to a good progress. Then it can be conclude that it cannot be implemented to every country and if it does happen tomorrow than it would be hard for undeveloped country and developing country to adapt but it would increase the competition globally.
ReplyDeleteIf free movement of people will be realised soon enough by the governments of the world, it would be beneficial as well as some drawbacks also present In this topic of discussion. As the benefits, people would be interacting easily with people from the different countries, race and religions in order to increase their knowledge regarding the diversity of this society as well as it would help these individuals to increase their connections so that it would be easier for them if they’re able to interact with people. Physically interacting with the global citizens. Also, the market would be much more open which leads to more goods that’s available in the market in order to create more varieties as well as more substitute which can satisfy more preferences and taste towards a product or service. However, the drawbacks present are: if the one move to a country are the ones that’re not equipped with skills and work experiences, it will lead to the rise in poverty of a county as well as overpopulation that can lead to the rise in crime rate as well as the destruction of economy of a country, socially saying, if people from the host country were not satisfy with the newcomers, many will occur like inferred discriminations or maybe explicitly discriminated to the newcomers or far more worse, genocide is a possible worse case scenario that can happen if the policy will be imposed.
ReplyDeleteWhat would it be if the free movement of people across nations were to be legalized and implemented? This is an interesting topic. From my point of view, there would be richer nation that becomes much richer and there would be poorer Nation that becomes much poorer. Why do I see this condition? First, If people In the world would be totally free to choose whatever the place they want to live, more people would go Into a developed country because they know that living In that sort of a country would provide them a better way of living. If more people were attracted to go to a developed country, more people with a great talent who lived in a developing country would go to a better country. It could be hard to maintain the order of a developing country because they probably could be losing some talented people. And It could be an advantage for a developed country because more talented people who wanted to be fairly treated to live In such a country. That is what I think if the free movement of people were to be applied In the world.
ReplyDeleteIf the free movement of people across international borders were to be legalized and implemented suddenly tomorrow, I guess all the countries will have different opinions regarding this issue. For some countries, they might agree on legalizing the free movement in their country because it will positively impact the nation’s economy. Like, for Germany accepting immigrants would be a good thing for them since the country’s population is decreasing and they need more people to occupy the nation. This is why Germany is welcoming immigrants and giving them a place to live, a simpler immigration procedure as well as free language classes for the immigrants. Whereas developing countries like Lebanon have to carry a much larger burden. With the country struggling to keep the economic issue together, Lebanon is forced to carry more burden due to the coming of immigrants. Many Lebanese often become unemployed due to the fact that the immigrants are taking their jobs and are paid for much cheaper salaries, which led to many companies hiring the immigrants. For me, the free movement of people is still not possible yet due to some countries who still struggle to maintain its economic problem.
