in these deep dark hours
hasty rain
on thirsty flowers
desperate wishes
for some stolen nights
no one knows
what is wrong
or right

add up your sorrows
and fly them like some flags
feel the wind as
it blows them ragged
it’s more than water
in a bruised angel’s eyes
dashed on the rocks
of a lover’s lies

these fragile secrets
oh they burn us if untold
which one to wager
and which one to fold
add up your sorrows
and dry them in your eyes
memorize the flowers
before they curl up and die

we brandish our bruises
like immaculate fools
why do we cherish
the things that we lose?
why do we cherish
the things that we bruise?
why can't we cherish
the things that are true?
When I read the poem for the first time, I kind of having difficulties to understand the meaning and the problem of this poem. I think it's because of the poem really used such beautiful words and it got me twisted and confused. But, as I read it again for four or five times, I personally think that it hit me. As someone who was in relationships before, I finally got the meaning, or so I thought.
ReplyDeleteI believe it's about a couple who are going through a hard time. As we know, both of them got hurt. Well, I don't know the exact reason, but I think it's because they didn't get chances to see each other frequently like most couples do from the words of stolen nights. Also, that kind of problem usually leads to a bigger problem such as they doubt each other as having someone new or one of them stops loving the other.Because of the doubt, they can get more frustrated and intrigued fights between them and finally can ended their own relationship.
That situation is so common in a relationship. They ended their relationship too soon before they realize that trust was all they need. Every relationship has to build on trust, love, and also commitment. If you only got one of them, please don't even bother to enter a relationship as it will just hurt you and your partner.
I can say with all honesty that this poem struck me. I can’t emphasize how much I can relate to this poem, at first I thought it was just a bunch of gibberish words that try to sound deep but failed. Then it struck me, “why does this poem make me feel sad?”. It takes me back to my first relationship where we were just a couple of lovers confused and scared (deep dark hours). I didn’t know what she did whenever she wasn’t around(no one knows what is wrong or right). All those thoughts about what she was doing or what she could be doing made sad and sorrowful, that’s when I had enough. I had to know what she was doing all this time, turns out she lied about what she was doing all this time, she was just out with someone else (it’s more than water in a bruised angel’s eyes dashed on the rocks of a lover’s LIES). She didn’t know that I knew her secret and it just killed me inside day by day, so I still kept it to myself (these fragile secrets oh they burn us if untold). You know what hurts the most though? It’s that I brandished my bruises like an immaculate fool. I cherished the thing that I lost. I cherished the thing that I bruised. For all honesty, I still can’t cherish the things that are true. (Yes I am somewhat copying what the poem says, but I promise it’s just how I feel).
ReplyDeleteThanks for your interesting thoughts which are well expressed.
ReplyDeleteHonestly, when I first read it, it is kinda hard to understand. But then I give it another try and wow, the "why do we cherish
ReplyDeletethe things that we lose?" is just something. We only realize how grateful and how thankful we are to something once we lose it. I guess this poem is about a couple who had a fight and they both got hurt but they also don't know what to do. And this poem is telling them to just let it all go. Being honest about your secret to the person you love is never easy, it never will be easy. But if you hide it, in the end it will hurts even more than it is supposed to. "add up your sorrows
and fly them like some flags" does this mean we have to let go all of our sadness and just let it be free? Because sometimes I do feel that i need to let go in order to let the pain go but at the same time i'm fighting with my own thoughts. Thank you for the amazing poem Mr. Adrian. Although maybe i could not understand all of this but i do feel the pain.
I love reading poems, it’s like hearing someone telling his/her feelings. Words that are chosen beautifully connect one to another verse. On the first verse, the poet describe the feeling and situation really well. The poet used an expression, “hasty rain on thirsty flowers” which honestly made me a little bit confused, because the previous expression is “hurtling lovers in these deep dark hours” But I love the rhyme of these two expressions; hours and flowers. Another expression that made me think of something is, “why do we cherish the things that we lose? why do we cherish the things that we bruise? why can't we cherish the things that are true?” Because, sometimes regret feels stronger than gratitude, some people say. Another thing that I like on this post is the pictures which describe the poem enough. I think, writer always have the picture of the writing inside their mind. So, when there’s a picture with a poem, it makes us easier to see the meaning of a poem.
