  1. In this second article about songs, I would like to review about sledgehammer song by Peter Gabriel. Sledgehammer song is a song by English Rock musician, Peter Gabriel, which is produced on 25th of April 1986 in Canada. He made this song with his friend, who is a Canadian record producer, name Daniel Roland Lanois. This piece had ever been to be number one on the billboard hot 100 charts in the United States on 26 July 1986. The song's music video also won a record nine MTV Video Music Award at the 1987 MTV Video Music Awards and Best British Video at the 1987 Brit Awards.
    First, when I heard that song, I interpreted if it is such a happy song about a man which offers their concern to make their girlfriend glad. I can conclude this because when I listen to the music, which sounds like an upbeat song and the lyrics tells about a joke. Moreover, the title of the song is “sledgehammer” which means about a tool is used for the construction purpose. But, the real meaning is absolutely different. The writer told that his song is about sex; the lyrics are loaded with phallic symbols. In addition to the word "sledgehammer," other references to the male member include the train, bumper cars, and the big dipper. Thus, I try to hear that song again and finally I can found if the song is about sex fantasy between the teenager.

  2. The first song, “Transatlanticism” covered by Isabeau Waia'u Walker is quite good for me. Therefore, I would love to do some research about that song. Transatlanticism is the fourth studio album by indie rock band Death Cab for Cutie, released on October 7, 2003, by Barsuk Records. The band's second concept album, Transatlanticism features a theme set around long-distance love. Transatlanticism received acclaim from critics when it was released and has since been considered the band's greatest album. The album charted at number 97 on the Billboard 200, and has been certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), for shipments of 500,000 copies in the United States. In 2011, Transatlanticism was named by NPR Music as one of the fifty most important recordings of the 2000s decade and in 2013, Barsuk Records released Transatlanticism Demos, a collection of demo versions of songs from Transatlanticism to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the album's release. So that means Transatlanticism was a really famous song back then.

  3. The song that without a doubt caught my attention was “Summer 2015” by L.E.J. To other people, this might just be your typical, everyday song, but it isn’t to me. Back when I was in high school, I took part in an acapella group, a vocal group that sang without the help of any instruments or instrumental background sounds. We, like this group, created what one would call ‘mash-ups’ of popular songs and thrived on that. To us, making songs like these are extremely difficult because it takes immense dedication, vast amounts of creativity, and the musical knowledge in order for the songs to fit in harmony. On top of all that, you would have to know a lot of songs just to fill up the gaps that each song leaves. This video really caught my eye because, ever since my enrollment in the acapella group, I highly appreciate groups that create original content and can find harmony in the jumble of notes. To others, this might seem like a good song, but for me, I can see the hard work they put into the video and song and I admire them for it.

Peter Gabriel’s “Sledgehammer” is the first song that I have heard from him after his omission from Genesis, my favourite progressive rock band. “Sledgehammer” is really distinct from Peter Gabriel’s original colour; the song is much more vibrant than his Genesis works. The emphasis of the bass line further proves how much Peter Gabriel had broadened his musical spectrum towards a pop sound. The heavy utilisation of synthesiser gives a groovy vibe to the song; a common characteristic of the music of the 80’s. However, I still can get the Genesis-esque feeling through his voice that still clings in my mind, as an avid Genesis fan.
    The song spent four weeks at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 chart on 26 July 1986 (Wikipedia), a remarkable feat for an artist that had seemingly past it. Despite the dispute that he had with the band that brought him to prominence which made him a solo artist, this song justifies how great Peter Gabriel is to retain his famous name.

  5. Summer 2015 by L.E.J is an interesting piece of song. I noticed that it is a mash-up of various popular songs, some I recognized as: ‘Freedom’ by Pharrell Williams, ‘Lean On’ by DJ Snake, ‘Hey Mama’ by David Guetta, ‘Bitch Better Have My Money’ by Rihanna, ‘Uptown Funk’ by Bruno Mars, ‘Cheerleader’ by OMI, and ‘Coco’ by O.T Genesis. What makes it more interesting is the fact that they only use 2 musical instruments; a cello and a drum, and the other sounds were purely their own voices. This type of music is very different to the one I usually listen to and it amazes me how J.E.C are able to imitate musical instrument sounds. Although I don’t know much about music, I do know that it is really difficult to create such piece of music and I very much appreciate musicians because without them, there would be no music in our lives and life without music is plain boring.

  6. In this review, I will talk all four song since I don’t really know much about music and just like to listen to it as a normal person. The first thing that I thought about the first song is how mellow and simple it is. It only uses one instrument of music and nothing else. Its really good song when you need some thing to make the atmosphere less tense or when you are in a long journey. Talking about simple, the second simple is has nothing to do with it. The second song, title Sledgehammer, still a great song to listen and still relevant considering its age. The video of the second song is very whacky and a bit weird in a good way, its stuffed with stop motion of things that very creative. Although there is some part that a bit uneasy to watch, overall, it’s a good song and has a good video. The third song is a good song to hear but the video is going to make you a little dizzy, so my advice just listens the song and don’t watch the video. For the last song its basically a compile of some of big hit song merge into one song with few instruments of music. If you like this kind of song good for you because its not my favorite kind of song.

  7. Once i played the song i knew it already that those songs are not my type of music. I think this article is very interesting. I have researched some of the song and it turns out that the song Transatlanticism by Isabeau is so beautiful, she covers it well without changing it too much than the original version. I like both, the original and the cover version. They succeed impress me with their voices and emotions. But I also heard Sledgehammer a lot but was not interested to find out more. The music video have got me hyped for a moment. From all the lyrics shown up there I like Bad Insect by Ultraista, somehow it looks unique and relatable to me. Summar 2015 by L.E.J is super cool, I don't really listen to this kind of music but yes again this song got me tried to open my mind and to broaden my knowledge specifically in art.

  8. I really love Transatlanticism, I still remember vividly the first time I listened to this song, I was only 15 at that moment. I fell in love with this song so much that I started looking up to the other alternative rock bands, and I listened to them since then. I don’t know why but I like music that has its essence, a music that has its own characteristics. I feel like music affects us in so many aspects in life, and it’s supposed to make you feel something (either happy, relax, sad, etc) because music nowadays are so meaningless and they don’t have any sort of message behind its lyrics. As in this song Transatlanticism, I love the lyrics so much because in my opinion Gibbard (the song-writer) meant it in a metaphorical way instead of physical, although so many people may disagree with that. The lyrics combined with Isabeau’s vocals deserves a standing ovation, the rawness of her voice and the melodies that she plays is amazing. I will definitely watch more videos of her.

  9. Unfortunately Ultraίsta doesn't have that much information about them on the internet and the last project people heard they we working on was their LP in 2012. Nevertheless, I really enjoyed that track and its a song that's right up my alley. I enjoyed the electronic vibe to it with the synth and the percussion caught my attention for sure. I will say that the beginning of the song sounded a bit eerie for my taste. The song also feels a bit ahead of its time, consider the fact that this music video was posted on 2012, this song would have gotten traction from a lot of people should it be released in 2018. Im not sure what genre this is but I really enjoy these types of bands/musicians. I suppose you could say the style they present themselves, visually and musically, is rather unorthodox but I think that this unique style they have will bring in more viewers to their band.

After I listened to the first song in the playlist article which is Transatlanticism by Isabeau Waia’u Walker which was covered by Death Cab for Cutie, I think to myself that the song has quite sad tone. I kind of like the tone of the music though. I think the song is about someone who needs his or her significant other to be so much closer. But, I am not really sure about the song’s meaning since I only listen to the song once.
    The second song I listened to was L.E.J by Summer 2015. The first reason why I think the song is interesting is because it is a mixture of some songs; I can hear the same lyrics and tone of the music that is actually from a different music. The second reason is also because the song has foreign lyrics to it although I do not understand what it means.

  11. Whoa, the second song, Sledgehammer, has a really peculiar music video. It made me curious, so I did some research about the song and also the music video. "Sledgehammer" is a song by English rock musician Peter Gabriel. It was released as the lead single from his fifth studio album, So (1986), on 25 April 1986. "Sledgehammer" has been described as dance-rock, blue-eyed soul, and funk. The song was influenced by 1960s soul music. "Sledgehammer" had a video commissioned by Tessa Watts at Virgin Records, directed by Stephen R. Johnson and produced by Adam Whittaker. Aardman Animations and the Brothers Quay provided claymation, pixilation, and stop motion animation that gave life to images in the song. Gabriel, the singer, lay under a sheet of glass for 16 hours while filming the video one frame at a time. The song's music video won a record nine MTV Video Music Award at the 1987 MTV Video Music Awards and Best British Video at the 1987 Brit Awards.

Similar to my comment on four songs number 1, I would like to find information on the background of the writers or performers of this song also the background of the song itself before telling you guys about my personal views on these songs. The first song, Transatlanticism by Isabeau Waia'u Walker (Death Cab for Cutie cover) is a youtube cover by Isabeau. I could not find much information on Isabeau but all I know is she comes from Hawaii, and she joined YouTube on 13 March 2012. She has 18 thousand subscribers and she upload songs in a bi-weekly basis. Since 13 March, she got a little bit less than 3 million views which is relatively small because she has lots and lots of videos. Only a few of them got more than one thousand views. She isn’t very popular, so it is not strange for me to not know her.

The lyrics of this song is very much like a poem, I can easily imagine this song listened by people having long distance relationships.

    2. Moving on to the second song, Sledgehammer by Peter Gabriel. Peter Brian Gabriel is an English singer, songwriter, record producer, and humanitarian activist who became famous in the musical world as the original lead singer and flautist of the progressive rock band genesis which he quitted in 1975. After leaving Genesis, Gabriel’s fifth album So is his best selling release and this album is certified triple platinum in the UK and five times platinum in the US. The album’s most successful single, Sledgehammer, won a record nine MTV awards and is MTV’s most played music video of all time. Even though he is 68 years old, Peter is still active in music and also in human rights activism. He received the Man of Peace award from the Nobel Peace laureates and Time magazine named him one of the one hundred most influential people in the world. What a great achievement for a progressive rock singer and songwriter.

After skimming the lyrics of Sledgehammer, I have absolutely no idea what those lyrics are talking about or the message Peter is trying to give us through that song as I am not that good at deciphering the true meanings of song lyrics. After reading stuff about this song from the internet, I found out that Sledgehammer was influenced by music of the 1960s era. This song is about sex as the lyrics are loaded with objects that symbolically or iconically resembles a penis (phallic symbols). Those phallic symbols include the “Sledgehammer”, “Train”, “Bumber car”, and “big dipper”. Gabriel, in relation to the theme of this song, said that “sometimes sex can break through barriers when other forms of communication are not working too well.” Gabriel used a horn section played by the legendary Memphis horns because of the influence of the 1960s soul music, which led to criticism that he was trying to copy the style of Phil Collins to gain success. Peter later said that he was more of an influence on Phil Collins.

    1. The third song, Ultraίsta - Bad Insect is taken from a 2012 album titled Ultraίsta. Ultraista is initially a collaboration between Nigel Godrich and Joey Waronker which became a three-piece with the addition of Laura Bettinson in 2010. The name of the band, Ultraista is taken from the Spanish literary movement, ultraism. Ultraism is a noun simply meaning the holding of extreme opinions. Ultraism has goals which are
      1. Reduction of the lyric element to its primordial element; metaphor,
      2. Deletion of useless middle sentences, linking particles and adjectives,
      3. Avoidance of ornamental artefacts, confessionalism, circumstantiation, preaching and farfetched nebulosity, and
      4. Synthesis of two or more images into one, thus widening its suggestiveness.
      I will try to find the correlation between the band name and the song Bad Insect later in this comment. Unlike the other two performers, ultraista is a bit harder to look into due to lack of information available on the web.

    2. Let us now talk about the hazy sway of a synthpop track called Bad Insect. After reading the lyrics I noticed that this song is talking about someone who misses someone and even after having lovers. That particular someone or “she” as depicted in the song feels like there is something missing from her lovers that “you” have. After listening to this song I would say that this song isn’t quite my cup of coffee, there are too much abstract noise in that track which I couldn’t enjoy. The singer is also singing in a manner that she only uses a small vocal range with note repetition, also not my personal preference of music. The lyrics are also a bit hard for me to understand. I think the lyrics in this song is full of metaphors, and this is also about someone really holding on to their opinion, almost forcing what “I” or “she” think is true. I would like to apologize for my lack of knowledge and I hope that someday I can really understand the true meaning of lyrics.

    3. Lucie, Elia, and Juliette made a mashup performance consisting of numerous top songs from the summer of 2015 condensed into one. Soon it got viral so the three women from Saint Denis, a city in Paris’ suburbs got famous and we now know them as L.E.J. L.E.J is short for Lucie, Elia, and Juliette. L.E.J’s music is based on classical and world music. I am not surprised that L.E.J could make such kinds of music because all the members of L.E.J came from a musical school. Juliette studied cello at the Conservatoire de Saint-Denis, and Lucie and Elisa studied vocal technique at a prestigious French singing school. Lucie can play the piano and saxophone, Elisa also plays the piano but instead of the saxophone she plays the harp as her second instrument. I recognize a few songs from the mashup. Those are Pharrell Williams – Freedom, DJ Snake – Lean On, Rihanna – Bitch Better Have My Money, Bruno Mars – Uptown Funk, and David Guetta – Hey mama.
