Doctors Online
Our relationship with our doctors is changing due to new technologies. Increasingly, instead of going to visit a doctor for routine matters, you can go online, as described in a CNS News article. The big difference is that doctors can now use what is being called e-health or e-care to meet with their patients online to engage in video chats, participate in health checkups over the phone, or review the results of in-home health monitoring devices that send the data to the doctor over an Internet connection.
Doctors can even monitor and adjust the doses of medicine that patients get over the Internet. If patients have an automatic drug dispenser, a doctor can prescribe how much of what drug a patient will get and change or stop the dosage based on the information obtained from other health monitors.

The way this online health care works is that a special device is clipped onto the patient ’s skin that contains all the drugs prescribed by the doctor. Then, based on what the doctor prescribes, the device using an Internet wireless connection will adjust what it doles out to the patient. In turn, the doctor will get information on what to do for the patient through an electronic health record, which keeps track of the results from other devices measuring the patient ’s blood pressure and glucose level. Later, should the doctor want to talk to the patient, he or she can communicate through video conferencing, as well as by phone.
For example, if a patient has diabetes, the flu, or high blood pressure, the doctor can see how the patient is doing at the push of a few keys or the movement of a mouse on a screen. Then, based on this information, the doctor can decide what the patient should do and provide any prescriptions for drugs or further treatment—all electronically, of course.
This means that doctors and patients no longer have to see each other very much, because so much routine medical care can be practiced while the patient is in the comfort of his or her own home. Certainly, if necessary, this Internet medical treatment can pave the way for the patient to actually see someone by going to the doctor ’s office or to a hospital for further care aided by electronic devices for everything from reading blood pressure to taking brain scans. But otherwise, the system increasingly emphasizes getting health care from the comfort of your own home without needing to physically visit a doctor.
Ironically, this new focus on medicine is a bit like turning back the clock to the days when doctors did in-home visits, though back then they were actually there in person, whereas now these home visits are increasingly conducted via an Internet connection between the doctor in his office and the patient at home.

Though some might consider this distance between doctor and patient overly impersonal, this system has much to commend it. You don ’t have to take the time to physically go to the doctor, and you don ’t have to deal with the stress of getting there as you battle traffic pileups and bad drivers. Additionally, you might have access to the latest and greatest of electronic monitoring devices.
However, there can be a number of downsides. For example, what if you are dependent on all this electronic gear to communicate with your doctor and the power suddenly goes off? Or what if when the power comes back on again, you find that the power surge has blown the power system in your monitoring gear, much like what happens when a surge takes out a computer power supply or motherboard (which is what has happened to me when I left one of my printers on, and suddenly ZAP, during an outage in the neighborhood, the power supply went dead and has taken three months to replace). And then what if your equipment simply fails or becomes uncalibrated and gives a wrong reading?
If you ’re in a doctor ’s office, where the doctor is seeing you personally, he might realize there could be a problem if you are telling him one thing about your health while he is personally examining you which contradicts what he sees on the electronic device. This means he should do further checking. Perhaps seeing you on a video monitor might help to overcome that disturbance problem—and maybe some home equipment plugged into the monitor might be able to take your blood pressure and pulse or scan your open mouth and listen to you breathe. But if there is all this high-tech equipment between you and the doctor, maybe that could cover up some of the things that might be observed during an in-person doctor ’s visit. Not everyone may want all of that electronic medical gear in their house, and some may consider it overly expensive.
Also, this care over the Internet lacks one more important thing. Quite often medical treatment depends on the placebo effect—a very real effect that comes not from the specific pills or other treatments the doctor provides, but from simply seeing a doctor and getting his or her reassurance or from a belief that the pills or treatment will work. While some people might need that personal interaction with a trusted doctor to get that reassurance, some people might just as easily feel it and maybe even more so when they interact with a doctor over a computer screen.

So are all these changes making health care more electronic a good thing? I think the doctor is still out—or maybe the appropriate word now is offline—on that one. But the one thing that seems certain is that more and more of us will be getting our health care online and through electronic devices. And as we do, more increasingly we will need to personally see fewer doctors, which could be a good thing, if fewer doctors are available. Or then again, this new technology could lead to outsourcing medical care as well as many other jobs, so now, not only is the doctor that you see likely to be online, but outsourced to another country, too.
In any case, for the health care of the future, just turn on your computer and start the program. Wherever you are, the doctor is always in, er . . . online.

I strongly agree with the opinion because right now in 21st century we are dealing with what is called digitalization. Where everything is now digital and we tend to deal with anything with technology. It also can help to improve the technologies that were not made for health issues and now that it is faced to an online doctor people will tend to make more improvements to develop this new way in the world of medics.
ReplyDeleteEventhough i agree with the opinion i admit that there are some drawbacks related to the process of online doctors. What i think is that not all disease's are able to be examine using a electronic health record. There are times that doctors need to examine the body of a person physically rather than only in a digital way. This problem is what i think that must be solved to really assure the way of online doctor to be safe and useful for the people.
This is a mind-blowing idea. Due to the era of globalization we can even check our health using technology. In my opinion, I really agree and support on this. This method is only suitable for people with sickness which is not complicated. For them who have complicated sickness, this is not recommended because doctors also need to check our body not only by the data. Some issues about this type of technology is that when the technology goes wrong it might be fatal for the patient which can cause the doctor to give medicine which is not suitable for the patient and can be overdose. For some reasons, maybe this kind of method is good for consultation and also small health checkup. The benefits of this method is that when we need doctor for consultation we don’t need to go to the hospital and do some registration that will waste our time.
ReplyDeleteThroughout the years, technology becoming more advanced and I surely agree that technology is collaborating with human well-being. Both scientists and doctor are corporate to make online doctors (E-Doctor). E-Doctor helps the patient with simple sickness to make consultation easily, patients can make a video call with the doctors and tell what their sickness. It is more efficient and cheaper than go to a public hospital. Doctors can monitor their patient's health & condition anytime, it makes the patient feel secure and if the patient's sickness is getting worse, the doctor can immediately tell the patients to go to the hospital and get further examination. This method is more efficient and can reduce the death rate. We know that conventional doctor and hospital is still needed for complex sickness such as cancer, heart attack etc, but e-care can simplify patients to identify their sick symptoms quickly and the doctors could treat their sickness before its too late.
ReplyDeleteSince 2000, society has been trying to do their best to develop technology and take it to another level. Technology really help us to do our daily routine nowadays. For example, go-jek, that help our daily transportation. Nowadays, technology expert and medical expert trying to bring and combine technology and medical together. So, they're trying to make something call e-doctor. In my opinion this innovation will help people a lot. People won't need to go to doctor anymore. If the can't go to doctor, they can just make a video call with the doctor or maybe make a consultation online with the doctor, or maybe, they can order medicine through online application, and the medicine can be delivered to the patients house. But it's not always give people benefits. This kind of technology, maybe, in the future, maybe there will be no hospital in the future, and all of the employer in the hospital will be unemployed. So, i think there are advanteges and disadvanteges in the development of medice in the future era. Not all of technologies make benefit for people.
ReplyDeleteI think the neediness of E-Doctors in our medical world right now is still a debatable topic. There are lots of pros and cons that we could see from different perspectives. In this digital era, E-Doctors could help hospitals lower their operational cost. Since most of the doctors would be monitoring their patients from home, there will be less doctors using the gloves, mask and hand sanitizer. The entry of E-Doctor would bring a huge impact on the medical world, patients would feel more secure since there are doctors monitoring them 24/7. This opens opportunity for fresh graduate medical students to receive job faster because it is impossible for a doctor to monitor their patients for 24 hours alone. With the help of video calls, there would be a good relationship build between doctor and their patients which may boost the time needed for patient’s recovery. On the other hand, hospitals will be running out of doctors who are physically present. Whenever there is an emergency patient being brought to the hospital, the time it took for the response to be done would be longer since, doctors are outnumbered and nurses cannot make their decisions alone.
ReplyDeleteThe modern world pushes people to always innovate and go beyond limits. First it was telephones, next there were cars, then computers, and so on. Each of these new inventions are designed to make people’s lives much easier. Now, in this context, I see that developments the future of health is very great breakthrough considering health as one of the most crucial issues that we face every day. Almost everything is now available online, and so should health care. E-doctors are an effective way for people to get easy access of medical consultations from the comforts of their home. But this idea also comes with several concerns such as the integrity of the doctors. We know that there are lots of stuffs online that may mislead people into worse situations so the doctors should be certified, and they also need to be available to consult at any times. Also, noted above is the price of the high-tech gears that must costs very much and not everyone on their wealth can afford it.
ReplyDeleteSeeing the current trend in technological advancement, the idea of online doctor seem to be highly viable. Today’s citizen, especially those in productive age values time and therefore prefer to have quick and efficient mobility. A lot of interviews and meetings are now conducted via video call in order to save time and money. Transportations are booked online, messages can be sent in a blink of an eye. Everything is heading towards goods and services that are better and quicker.
ReplyDeleteOnline doctor as described in the passage seem to be a promising opportunity for the near future. In fact a simpler version of online doctor (telemedicine) already exist with the initial purpose of reaching those in remote areas. Today’s version of telemedicine allows patient to communicate with doctor on the phone (preferably video call) so the doctor can visually examine the patient.
With this being said, the future of a more advanced telemedicine is right around the corner. However, there are factors that needs to be taken into account in the case for telemedicine such as accuracy and the technology itself. Accuracy is an essential part of medical diagnosis. Virtually examining a patient is prone to misdiagnosis as some diseases (e.g skin disease) may look similar in camera. Virtual consultation may also be misleading as symptoms for certain diseases may be tricky to identify. Aside from that, most of the concern regarding online doctor is related to the flaw of technology that are prone to error and also the fact that suitable technology has not yet been equally spread across the globe.
Furthermore, online doctor is a great and innovative idea that may possibly solve the current issues faced in conventional hospital. Online doctor in the future will enable access to rural area, reduce the need of mobility, save time and bring a lot of advantages for humanity. I believe that scientists and engineers all over the world are working on improving the technology and system for a better, quicker and more efficient future.
I suppose the development of health care in digital era is one interesting topic to discuss about. The rapid development of the virtual world of internet can really do help people especially in those remote areas where medical assistance is hard to get. And actually these form of virtual doctor are already operational at the present. In Indonesia the app which implemented the same principle mentioned is called Halodoc. And that same application connect people with doctor via voice call and also integrated with delivering service for your medicines. On the other hand connecting patients with doctors via a virtual application is only the beginning for the age of online doctor. I recently watch a BBC documentaries that shows people are developing an artificial intelligence to fill the role of a doctor, at least in term of making diagnosis. But the fact that such technology is being developed as we speak, make us wonder what is the future of medical practice like.
ReplyDeleteHaving the possibility to see doctors online is a wonderful idea, as nowadays everything is going digital, from banking to travel agency, being able to see a doctor without moving from our house would be super convenient, people are getting more and more busy and having to book an appointment to the doctor, and having to go see the doctor physically is time consuming.
ReplyDeleteIt would also be safer than just self-medication and reading online medical blog written by so called “expert”, I am used to do that already, using internet to search for my symptoms and try to know what I have and possible remedies, I am always careful about what I read online about health related subject, but it’s still possible to make mistake with self-medication and could be dangerous.
But I still believe physical doctor are needed, especially for more serious illness, as technology is 100% reliable and mistake can happen, and also for people that doesn’t use smartphone or doesn’t trust technologies.
I think that this development is inevitable. Since the arrival of the internet, a lot of services have been more accessible, easier, and faster. I think that it was only a matter of time until technology will help the health industry to a degree that is written in the article above.
ReplyDeleteMy opinion on the subject is that I support this completely. First of all, I’m sure there is a lot of people that felt uncomfortable when they have to visit a doctor, especially when they think the problem/illness was to insignificant. I’m sure that a simple internet checkup would be mentally more bare-able.
Secondly, I do think that there are simple solutions for each downside that were represented in the article. Regarding the power blackout, I think that an emergency battery would be more than sufficient to keep a machine turned on until the power goes back on. And I think that a video call from a doctor would bring the much needed placebo effect.
I like the idea of having an online doctor that can help us wherever we are. Because the limitations of conventional doctors these days is that we have to go to the doctor’s place and wait for a long time to wait for our queue to be checked by the doctor. This concept can help a lot of people in any time, because we might not know when the decease might catch us. In my opinion, this idea of online doctor is a good idea. But The special device that is needed to do the service of online doctors and this could also be an obstacle to run this service. To run the service we need to use the special device that can measure the patient's blood pressure and glucose level. Producing this device might not be easy because the developer is trying to make a device that can calculate blood pressure and glucose level by only touching the skin of a person.
ReplyDeleteIt might take years to develop that kind of technology. This special device might cost a lot for the people that want to use it, so it is quite difficult seeing it from the marketing perspective. The job of an online doctor is to give prescription to the patient, there are lots of prescription and there are lots of decease that people might have. Some people might have a difficultie about their decease, and I think the online doctor should have a person that can help the what the patient needs. The implementation of this idea runs like the online customer service in other online services, but the online doctor needed to have someone that understands most of the prescription and can practice medicine to help the people in need. In that case we need a doctor that is willing to do this job, because a doctor understands how to treat people to be healthy.
ReplyDeleteAt the present time, everything is more accessible and convenient through the advances of technology and the Internet. Through a single tap on our smartphones or gadgets we can buy basically everything from anywhere, we can book tickets and accommodation, and even look for private tutors and might as well consult to a doctor.
ReplyDeleteOnline doctor consultation is an impressive development in the medical world as this could enable patients to communicate with doctors easily around the clock, and to ask for drugs prescriptions at anytime. This kind of consultation could also be an advantage to patients who require monthly or even continuous checkups, which mean they don't have to go back and forth to the hospital and thus saves time and money. A friend of mine actually faces this kind of situation; every now and then she needs to do a checkup in Singapore for a disease she’s suffering from. Imagine the amount of money and time her family could save if she can do an online consultation.
However, online doctor consultation might results in inaccurate diagnosis. This could happen if the patient leaves out important piece of information or other reason might be that doctors need to do a physical examination to detect a certain disease. Therefore, I think that online doctor consultations are only appropriate to those patients who have permanent doctors, and they know exactly what you’re suffering from.
I found this post really complete in terms of the content. I appreciate that the writer explains the advantages and disadvantages of the Doctors online. To be honest, I do not have a strong opinion about this kind of topics. I consider myself as a person who like the balance, not extremism. In this case, I would say the combination of both worlds is the key to success. Now a days, computer are really intelligent and communicating online is really versatile, especially in countries with long distances like the United States. However, as human beings, the interactions with other people is extremely important, especially if we are talking about sickness and health condition like in this case. Sadly, this concept may work in only develop countries, where most of the people have access to the internet. Sadly, in my country, El Salvador, the use of technology in general is really low due to the high number of poverty.
ReplyDeleteThere is always the plus and the minus for every issues that exists. And so does this issue. The plus is that digitalization era is getting better and easier to access. People could still have their doctor without the need to go see them, wait for them, and make appointments that sometimes become disturbing when we feel very sick. This new invention could really help us when we feel very sick and don’t have anybody to take us to the doctor. But there is always the minus point. The minus side is that we cannot always trust on the digital invention. They could make some error, and give wrong result. And this could be very dangerous because we talk about health which is very sensitive and important. The second minus is that when people don’t need to see their doctor, who knows that in not very long time, people will just check and consult their health through the app and don’t need any contact with the doctor? And when this happens, what would doctors do for their earning?
ReplyDeleteThe idea of the presence of online doctors it is benefical in my opinion for both the doctors and the patients, for me it’s beneficial for the doctors since the risk of contamination of the diseases from the patients visiting the doctors will be smaller since the doctors will have less physical meetings with the patients, while in the other hand, the patients will be benefitted since they will be receiving treatments faster since the patients just required to visit a webpage and they will receive receipts of the medical prescriptions faster so that they will buy it ASAP and the risk of the disease will even more worse will decrease. However, eventhough that it will be beneficial for most patients, for some patients with chronical diseases that requires an intensive treatment cannot enjoy the luxury of the presence of the what can be called as e-hospital since those patients will need to go to the hospital in order to be cured and online doctors cannot maintain the condition of those patients with a chronic disease 24/7 so the need to go to the hospital is still necessary for them. In the end, the presence of e-doctors are good, but then, the presence of hospitals would still be necessary since it’s providing an intensive care for everyone and doctors can directly check the conditions of their patients without the need of the patients requests.
ReplyDeleteThe world is starting to shift and efforts on implementing technology in every aspect can be seen these days. It is true how the presence of technology; or what we call digitalization is able to solve things in a much more efficient, both in terms of time and financial efficiency. But the big question is; can this be implemented in Indonesia? I believe that in order to execute this idea, a proper infrastructure is needed. Internet should be accessible to everyone in the country, therefore everyone has the ability to have the opportunity to use this type of healthcare. Digital literacy is also needed since not everyone has the knowledge to use technology in order to put it into practice.
ReplyDeleteRegardless of the high investment that should be allocated to these projects, I am optimist that it will be very useful in the long run. Once every citizen is able to access the internet, everyone will be able to enjoy healthcare at a lower cost.
I’ve never known before that health care has advanced in such a cool and fascinating way if not for this article. I would love to actually buy these devices so that I won’t have to go out just to get a doctor’s check up but there are two things that limit the possibility of buying them. Firstly, I don’t think I have the money to buy these devices as I imagine them to be very expensive and secondly, why would I need these devices if the most common diseases I get are cold and flu. I think through technology even anyone around the world can get a check up from a doctor from another country like someone in South Africa can get examined by a doctor from the United States. However, what this article said about the placebo effect is also a downside when not meeting the doctor directly because some patients, like myself, actually get more comfort and reassurance when they are face to face with the doctor in charge of them so they can be cured even with a placebo. This advancement has certainly brought big benefits in some health care aspects, but some aspects just can’t be replaced no matter how far technology advances.
ReplyDeleteI don't usually follow news or research papers about healthcare, and while I think the idea of long distance communication between doctors and patients to be phenomenal I can't simply ignore the downsides of such treatments. A doctor's job first and foremost is to treat their patient both physically and mentally, and although medical practitioners don't have the same responsibility and/or depth in treating their patient's mental health as opposed to say a shrink, they are still accountable for the patient's emotional wellbeing while being treated. This method of treatment through long distance communication can open up a lot of opportunities for people who are not capable of doing a personal visit to a hospital or people located in different countries or continents but it lacks the emotional guidance and treatment only available from meeting your doctor personally. I personally hope that the medical world advances exponentially throughout the next few decades so that this method of treatment can be more applicable and beneficial while having fewer negative aspects.
ReplyDeleteThe modern era helps us to do our daily activities or fulfill our daily needs just by technology. And it has reached a certain level where patients doesn’t need to visit a doctor for consultation. This innovation is really helpful because patients can save time, fuel and energy just to reach to the doctors office. Doctors can also monitor their patients more easily and more frequently. And it is also easier for doctors to determine which medicine that his/her patient should consume. On the other hand, this innovation also has its disadvantages. First, everything isn’t perfect. There is a chance that the device would make an error analysis. If that happens, it is likely that the doctor would give a wrong prescription. Second, it is likely to happen that there are numbers of people that can’t afford to buy this device. Therefore, consulting to the doctors office may still be a habit for some people. Personally, I rarely visit the doctors office. Because my father is a doctor. So when I feel ill, I just call my father and explain what kind of illness do I have. Then he will contact his colleagues for prescription. But, I still support the system of making consultation to the doctors office because it has a smaller possibilities of errors.
ReplyDeleteIn this case I agreed about this new method about doctors online, in this era when we depends so much on technology and efficiency is one of the most important thing, doctors online could be a new revolutianary solution and a mind-blowing idea that could be really helpful to the sociecty because sometimes when we sick we are lacking of stamina and energy it means that we need extra energy and stamina if we want to see a doctor, especially when we are alone. However despite this new and revolutionary technology and idea about doctors online at some part we still need to meet doctor face to face when we are sick or having an accident, example like broken bones, shreded muscle, etc. But these days not many people know about this revolutionary idea, so theres still a lot of people who still meet a doctor face to face cause they don’t know about this information and they don’t know how to do it, so for me we need to spread this information widely so people will know about this method in hope to make their life easier
ReplyDeleteIn this world, there are always positive values and negative values in almost every issue. One of them is the inevitable development of technology and in this case, the development in the medical major. I do agree that with the presence of an online doctor it will be very beneficial for us because we don’t have to go to the hospital if we want to check our health, we just have to turn on our computer and then contact our doctor through online ways. After that, we just have to wait for the doctor to give their recipe for our treatment and it’s finished. However, there are some disadvantage that relates to this case. You see, there are some disease that really needs the doctor ability and some equipment that you can only find in the hospital. For example, when you take your blood to check your sugar level, you will need an equipment that could analyze it. But the problem is, most of the people couldn’t afford to buy such equipment just to examine their blood. And if you want a bigger problem, there are lots of people in Indonesia that still couldn’t afford to go to the hospital let alone buy a medical equipment.
ReplyDeleteTechnological advancement has been the trend of our digital era. It is debatable to say whether the whole thing is useful or useless since everything always has its limitations. From one point of view, digitalization has its benefits such as the convenience, reduction in queue, faster yet accurate responses and so on. In this case, “a special device is clipped onto the patient’s skin that contains all the drugs prescribed by the doctor” is something very innovative and advanced. It is indeed helpful but to an extent. There will be potential problems such as the electronic breaking down or even worse tampered or hacked. We already have an e-care system that uses an ‘expert-system’ application where people who are seeking medical advices answer a few pre-determined questions, which the system then compiles into a solution. Now this would be useful for someone seeking minor medical attention since they don’t need to physically see and ask a doctor what medications they should take. This method is obviously cheaper compared to the idea in this article but living in a world where the majority is still under-developed, the function of this device and its cost efficiency is still questionable.
ReplyDeleteI personally think that this advancement of an online doctor visit is a very great breakthrough because this will help many patients especially those who are from the lower classes. With the help of this technological breakthrough, patients don’t have to worry about pulling their money out of their pocket for transportation cost and other extra fee patients spend in order to get checked by a doctor. For patients coming from the lower class, this is a great news since transportation could sometimes cost the patient a great deal of money, especially those who come from very remote areas, where transportation is limited. However, although it’s very convenient that patients could consult to a doctor via the internet, there are some issues that arise regarding this advancement. First, the cost of the machine. Since this is a very new technological advancement, there’s no doubt that it will be expensive, considering that fact that this machine could detect a patient’s disease, giving the patient the drug automatically, and monitor the patient’s health status. Second, just as the article had said, the factor that it might be blown out the power system in case the electricity went off. Despite the negatives that this machine has, I still think that this is still a great breakthrough. Although as for now, the Indonesian society has to wait to use this machine because as a developing country, I think this machine will not work well in the Indonesian market.
ReplyDeleteWe live in a generation where technology plays an important role in everyday life. We can easily get connected with anyone across the country, we can immediately order an online taxi, accommodation, etc by using the internet.
ReplyDeleteThis E-Doctor idea is extremely helpful and splendid in the medical industry. This E-Doctor plan could change individual’s intention of going to the doctor to just type on their smartphone and it will all be time saving and quick.
Patients would get treated immediately, they won't have to book an appointment or wait for the next day to see a specialist. Technology is getting more advanced, but what would be a problem is for those who doesn't own a smartphone or a computer, other than that a technical error might occur. Overall in my opinion, the E-Doctor will create a good relationship between the doctor and the patient, also this idea could be a hit in the future.
The concept of doctors being a mere video call away, ready to help and aid us sounds like a great idea, to me personally. It would be greatly beneficial for those whom have a hard time going out of the house, such as the elderly, people who suffer from chronic pain, the disabled, as well as those bedridden. The traditional style of going to the doctor is hard for them, as they have a hard time to drive or sit for long periods of time just to get a medical checkups or a refill for their medication. I once read that doctors simply make a guess based on the list of symptoms their patients experience and cross off the illnesses that don’t match their description. This verbal exchange can be replicated perfectly through video call, which is another reason why I’m fine with this idea.
ReplyDeleteAlthough the consequences pointed out by the article are very much true and could be dangerous when simply overlooked, I still think it would be a great idea to have this online medical service.

In the present days a lot of innovation exist to makes our life easier and more efficient than how it used to be. E-Commerce, Online transportation, online food delivery, and so on. These innovation are being developed to enables us to do two, three, or even multiple tasks at the same time. This kind of technology is easily accesible for the majority of people. As these innovation grows, it offer us higher quality service and significantly lower cost. Now, even the Health industry is taking part in these “Online Service’” business. This is a really big step for the health industry, since not all people live in the city which tipically had anything you want at a walking distance. Some people in the countryside may find it harder to find a nearby medical institution. Thus, this online medical counseling is a needed service for the community. Not only for those who lived far from hospital, but also for the people living inside the city which most of the time had a really busy schedule / working hours.
ReplyDeleteI think, this new technology is a very amazing breakthrough. But, I have two thoughts about this new technology. My first thought is, that this new technology could be dangerous. What I mean is, our health is something that is very important and crucial, sometimes, things that are related to medical checkups and drug prescriptions is very important for our health and something that needs to be done carefully and thoroughly by the doctors. To take corners at something that is this crucial could be dangerous, I mean, by removing the aspect of “direct meeting” with the doctors, somethings could be done not optimally, by not being there, what happened if the doctor give the wrong medical analysis, or what happened if the doctor give the wrong drug prescription, these things could be lethal. My second opinion is, that this thing is a very good breakthrough in medical aspect. By having this method, we can cut our budget by removing the transportation aspect and lots of other aspects. So, my final thought is, that this medical breakthrough is great, but needs to be done very carefully.

ReplyDeleteHeading into the 21st century, we must face the fact that our life becoming more surrounded with the ease of technology. For us to implement the ease of access to healthcare would benefit a wide range of people. In my opinion for us to be able to communicate and consult with doctors over the internet would be very useful. As it gives off many benefits such as efficiency in terms of time but it also lifts the weight on patients who are the focus of health maintenance and improvement. Patients who are sick should be prioritized to rest, as the result of this the communication medium is then replaced with online traffic. But when discussing about the treatment of patients I have my doubts because of the reliability towards it. This is because when talking about technology it cannot be taken out of context its reliance on electricity. And when this happens it complicates the fact that the whole system relies on a server. This causes to a certain degree danger to the patients, as it is possible for them to be incorrectly given dosage or the doctors receiving false information from the patients and all other possible mishaps. In conclusion, I support the idea of transitioning into an online based platform but there needs to be solutions to the flaws that are available.
The dynamics of the ever-growing fields of technology sure improves human lives. The vast development of our ideas has extended human life expectations to points we have never thought of. However, the dilemma of technologized outcomes is the replacement of traditional services conducted by the humans. The artificial intelligence will surely remove jobs done by human slowly. The negative effects of programmed artificial intelligence may not result in a humane decision as they solve problems through algorithms whom may never surpass human feelings and common senses.
ReplyDeleteI do agree with the notion of artificial intelligence will make human lives easier and surely make health costs cheaper, however, the world still surely needs traditional ways of solving problems as the balance of human-solved problems and artificial intelligence-solved problems are mandatory. The macro effect of imbalance is the instability of human welfare if humans were glued to technologies. Traditional doctors are needed, while artificial intelligence is a huge helper.
The idea that future health care can overcome distance by making it online might actually be an excellent one. It is a common thing that people has to leave the comfort of their homes and go through the traffic congestions and spend long periods of time in the excruciating wait for the congestion to finally give way, that exceed the threshold of human patience, to make it to an appointment with a doctor in a weekly check-up. Online health care is by far a good compensation for the trouble. But have we ever imagined that we’re basically putting up the informations on our health conditions on the internet and what if someone, somehow, managed to tap into the storage and get their hands on the informations? In Indonesia, where online security is oftenly neglected, it is a serious matter that we should develop further insights into. Basically, anyone can tamper with our prescriptions in an ill attempt on our lives. There had been several cases of user data being compromised, e.g. Facebook data leak, if the same thing occur with online health service, let’s just assume that the perpretrators only demand the ransom money for the data they stole, but what if they plan to use your own data against you? The benefits of utilizing the internet is that you can save yourself the procedural troubles you have to go through before receiving the service you deserve. The internet is just that powerful, and its powers go both ways, anyone can take advantage of it, regardless of the morality.
ReplyDeleteMost of my family are doctors. There are my mother, both of my older sisters, and my other relatives. Whenever we have our time together, it is impossible not to discuss something about health, or everything related to the medicine world. From all of the group discussion I’ve been into about the medicine world, I understand, though very little, and make me disagree about the e-health or e-care where the doctor doesn’t meet the patient in real person and observe the condition directly in person. It is very necessary for the doctor to see what the real condition look like. Even though sometimes my mother asks the patient or the nurse to take a photo of the condition and observe it from the photo when my mother is away, she still need to see it firsthand. I don’t like the idea of clipping a special device onto the patient ’s skin that contains all the drugs prescribed by the doctor. I think it is too risky to do it since the risk can cause a very dangerous impact for the human health such as what if the special device broken and affects our health and can become very dangerous. To me, I would still choose the traditional way which is meeting the doctor face to face.
ReplyDeleteHealth is very important to us, it determines our everyday performance. Doctors have help many people to keep their health, and in result we are able to keep our performance as well. Technology has support doctors in examining people to help with their health, and with technology being developed to be better and greater, doctors wouldn’t need to do much. Having advance technology maybe be a good thing, but we can't fully rely our health fully on technology. It is needed to have a human interference because not everything can be measured by technology. And also, if we fully rely on technology, we won’t need doctors anymore. Why is this a bad thing? It’s a bad thing because then the job vacancy will decrease for doctors and also teachers who teach doctors. So, technology can help doctors to treat health problems, but we shouldn’t fully rely on them because of what it will do to the future of doctors.
ReplyDeleteOur world has entered a stage where distance is not a significant problem. Technology is present to facilitate human life. The presence of artificial intelligence brings an innovation that is able to face globalization. Digitalization is one of the most innovative solutions against the changing of times.
ReplyDeleteOne sector affected by digitalization is the branch of health. Technological developments offer humanity in the form of an online system that can provide a large enough level of effectiveness. An online system of medicine will broadly facilitate patient coordination with doctors. But for certain cases I assume that this system cannot be fully implemented in all conditions.
Will this system be effective when applied to the emergency department?. Distribution of information that is done online will require different times. This possibility will be very dangerous if it is set in the emergency unit. I don't think the whole system will need an online doctor's system, because every disease has different treatment. So, it would be better if the online system is applied to patients with diseases that are not too severe and also as a media to consult and ask the doctor. Examples of this online system are: livehealthonline.com, www.klikdokter.com, and www.practo.com.
In this digital era, everything is possible and much easier with technology. I believe that at some point, technology is already being a part in our life. My thought in this article is that I’m not a hundred percent agree but also not fully disagree. Let’s say that I’m fifty-fifty. The reason why I’m fifty-fifty is because I believe that technology make everything easier and effective and even more accurate. I agree about the idea that we need to put technology in this medical world but still for me having face-to-face meeting with doctor or we could say the traditional way is also important. The reason why I agree with having face-to-face meeting with doctor is because I believe that it is important for doctor to see the condition of their patients in real life. Technology is human made which is means that we as a human still can do better than technology. So that’s why is very important for doctor and patient to meet to check the real condition because sometimes even advance technology still have their flaws.
ReplyDeleteI really do think that advances in technology has made our lives much more convenient and practical. Revolutions in the medical field is no exception. It’s astounding that advances in technology has enable people to consult with their doctors from wherever they are through engaging in video chats, phone calls and even use an in-home built automatic drug dispenser. How the e-health works is pretty simple and sophisticated, based on the doctor’s prescription, the patients can directly get their dose of medications adjusted accordingly by the device while the doctors can immediately get a record of the patient’s conditions, all via wireless internet connection. Although these advancements and comfort offered seems to be very sophisticated and convenient, of course it all comes with a price. What if the internet connection was just not good enough, for the worse, during emergencies? What if the machine turns out to be uncalibrated and dispenses inaccurate doses of drugs? Call me old-fashioned whatsoever bur when it comes to health and well-being, I would definitely prefer the conventional meeting-with-the-doctor scheme as humans, with their brain capabilities have greater chances of eliminating these risks or damages that could otherwise be done by merely a machine.
ReplyDeleteOnline doctors is certainly a step up in ensuring people’s health. This is very beneficial for people who live far from medical centres or others who aren’t mobile enough to get out of their homes due to an illness or many other reasons. If a patient is lazy enough to visit a doctor because of the traffic, it’s not such a big deal. I think it is still better to visit doctors physically, than with the help of an internet connection. In a doctor’s office, doctors are able to do further checking, whereas they’re not able to do it through an internet connection. The article also mentioned the placebo effect, which is a belief that treatments will work when actually visiting a doctor.
ReplyDeleteIn conclusion, based on my opinion, online treatments should only be used by people who live far from medical centres, and those who have problems going out of their homes. But they should occasionally visit a doctor in certain cases to have further check-ups.
The development of technology is vast and widely spread in every part of the world. Technology makes our lives easier in a lot of different aspects. However, technology also has its downsides. In the medical field, for example in Indonesia, we have Halodoc, which is an app, in which we could consult a doctor and order medicine that will be delivered directly to us. I think it helps a lot, especially when you don’t have anyone to help you when you are sick. However, depending everything on technology, like not needing to go to the doctor because you have a lot of electronic medical gear to do video call with the doctor to do a thorough check for your body, is extremely risky. Like the article said, if the power suddenly goes off, what would happen? Not to mention malfunction could happen to the technology, and it would be very dangerous for a human’s health, or even life. Therefore, I think technology is good. But, for now, we still need to go to the doctor and meet physically (in real life).
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, I’m in between pro and cons about the doctors online. Using the doctors online, it will help to make our time more efficient. What I mean by more efficient is when you got sick with a simple disease, you don’t ness to go to the hospital and then queuing to get a doctors appointment. The only thing that you need to do is just access the doctors online and get your body analyse or talk to the doctor via video call or phone call as it is stated in the articles and later on you can get a prescription. In the other hand, I think doctors online also have its own downside which is how they are unable to detect some disease because what if some disease must be detected or checked by a doctor and patient physically present there or in other words what if the doctors online misdiagnosed the patients disease and gave the wrong prescription. In conclusion, I think both the online doctors and non online doctors have its own advantage and disadvantage.
ReplyDeleteI think this online doctors concept is a really good innovation because in the digital era, people tend to do everything by using technology. You could buy food and clothes with some tap and swipe in your mobile phone. You could order some car or motorcycles to help you to go somewhere. So, why can’t you order a doctor to come to your house or buy some medicine when you’re sick? But, it would be better if you meet your doctor in the hospital so you could be examined with all of the facilities provided in the hospital. I think it is just a matter of preference, if you are busy and want a convenient way to meet your doctor, you could use the online doctors. And if you prefer better treatment and facilities, you could go to the hospital and meet your doctor face to face.
ReplyDeleteI am actually not a huge supporter in terms of health being monitored through the internet for now. The first reason for that is health’s margin of error is really small. Making it dangerous to actually determined someones sickness without even visiting a doctor. With time, technology related to e-doctor may be sharper making it safer for people to use, but for now and maybe for the next 10 years, it haven’t reached the level of safety that is needed for something as important as health. The second reason why I don’t support this idea is that the internet or technology itself tend to be hackable. Sickness is one of the most private things that a person may have and, In my opinion relying on the safety of the internet is just the same as relying the safety of a house on a 1 meter fence. So what im saying here is that e-doctor for now or for the next 10 years e-doctor isn’t really the best health related thing that we can use.
ReplyDeletePersonally, I partially disagree to the statement that people threw which stated that In this globalised and digitalised era the things which usually undertaken by human being can be replaced by technology, in health departments machine. Actually those platform, such as E-doctor is only programmed to give the possible illness based on the symptoms experienced by the patients. This platform also known as expert system in IT terms and it is applied not only for medical purposes, also for other fields. It provides ease and it is true this platform saves a lot of time and effort. However those platforms and also machines cannot perform they’re designated purposes if there are no human interference. For example the platform like E-doctor it required a knowledge base in their server which is provided by experts in this occasion is doctors. So It is not possible to replace human labour totally as those technologies also can make some errors, so human labour is the one who prevent those errors made by machines. Beside of this factors of human interference to prevent errors, it is a subject to high rate of unemployment in this field if technologies replace those duties that usually undertaken by human labour.
ReplyDeleteOnce again, the world should always be fulfilled with innovation. And the future of medicine using online technology is probably one of the most sophisticated innovations so far. No need to see the doctor directly can really helps the patient to minimize their transportation cost, their time, and most importantly their energy. But indeed, we still have to remember that dealing with technology will also face some several threats. Like for example the cost for the technology itself, the power needed, the network and so on. So my suggestions are: the doctor from any country in the world should be open minded towards this new innovation, they should figure out what are the obstacles that might affecting this innovation, and when they already know the obstacles they should consult the problems with engineers (for example) which they probably know how to deal with those technology issue, lastly the government of every country should support this kind of new innovation for the better future. In fact, when everyone can work together to support and help each other, this sophisticated innovation can actually be real and everyone can probably have more chance to live longer.
ReplyDeleteWorld’s technological advancement have been growing up rapidly. Ever since the establishment of internet, everything have started to go online. If I’m not mistaken, I think you can get prescription via online application in United States. This article is talking about how we can see doctor via online in the future. In my opinion, online doctor is beneficial up to a certain point. It is basically more practical, efficient, low cost, and fast. We don’t have to wait in a long line to meet with doctor. However, having the process so instantaneous and easy might make people become dependent and won’t pay attention to their health anymore. In the article it is said that the device could detect patient’s health and the doctor will take care of it. I believe it is our own body and we have to be aware of that by taking care of our own health.
ReplyDeleteTechnology isn’t something that we can avoid because we are currently living in an era where we are surrounded by different kinds of advanced technology, which makes technology inevitable. In my opinion this specific idea is going to bring a lot of benefits but also, a lot of controversy. Let’s look back to what happened to angkot drivers, local taxi drivers and local ojek drivers when Gojek started to become more popular, some people weren’t able to accept the fact that technology is advancing and impacting our lives more and more each day. Which is why I think this idea will bring a lot of controversies, because it is similar in some way with the rise of Gojek and the impact that it gave to offline transportation drivers. But in this case, it will be doctors that aren’t able to provide their customers with online consultation. They would be the people that bring controversy towards this matter because some would feel the same way as those offline transportation drivers. Although this may lead to some controversy, I do believe this idea would also bring a lot of benefits too since it can save your time and energy, it is practical and it is also a lot more convenient.
ReplyDeleteActually I’ve seen an application where you can easily call a doctor based on your location and needs, either a basic phone call or a video call called ‘YesDok’, it was in fact made by Indonesians. Although, in the application you can’t measure your blood pressure, etc. Because it doesn’t provide us the device to measure all those at home. Back to the topic, in my opinion this is very helpful considering there’s so many patients in the hospital, especially here in Indonesia, with this new innovation it’ll lessen the patients which means less queue, so people with serious disease or fatal damage (accidents) could be prioritized. However, as it is stated in the article, this innovation is overly expensive. Even in developed countries, I don’t think many people would actually rely on it due to the price itself. As in Indonesia, a country where the majority are poor, I don’t think they could afford this. Another problem also that occurred here in Indonesia is the internet access, it often slows down for no reason.
ReplyDeleteWith this cutting-edge medical technology, there will be some advantages and disadvantages.
ReplyDeleteSome kind of the advantages for people is making them able to save more time. People don’t have to travel to the hospital or a clinic. People can directly consult problem with the doctor in a minute. As people save more time, people can be more productive. But, there will be also some disadvantages. The newest technology makes us more dependent with the system. We know that in some occasions, the system may be hacked or even shut down due to some occasion. It will be quite dangerous if health issues are fully automated. Therefore, a wise consideration is highly needed to apply the new cutting-edge medical technology. I believe that the path for the healthcare is showing a promising path, but there still a long way to make the fully automated system launched as the system hasn’t been tested in a real world case.
This is a really good article, I really curious about the development of this. Because right now I think that doctors can be replaced by AI (Artificial Intelligent). The symptoms of a disease are always similar and also indubitable. There is an application called “Ada” who can help you to identify your disease based on a question that the app gives you, giving a prescription and what to do to relieve the pain. It really is a very good app. It can be downloaded for free in the app store and there aren’t in-app purchases. It sounds like dream but people are not using that app. They still skeptical about the app and choose to go to the doctor. The weaknesses of this technology is it can’t do things as humans do and It does not have the same intuition as human do. It also cannot giving a decision whether the patient need a surgeon or not. But there’s a chance that this could happened and become something normal.
ReplyDelete• Wow, the things human do to keep their comfort. I think this is quite an innovation. By having this device strapped on your body, you can allocate the time that you normally use see the doctor to do something else. It really combines health and conveniences. Which ina way, really genius. But I think seeing the doctor in person can also benefit the patient. Because when you see the doctor in person, you can actually speak to him or her in person. There, you can open up about your sickness in detail. While it is true that the advent of messaging and chatting has enabled us to contact the doctor anywhere and anytime, it is different than speaking in person. There are some things that you can and can’t convey with instant messaging. So yeah, I think this will have a huge impact in the medical world. But will it be for the better? Only time will tell.

ReplyDeleteFor me, the presence or the idea of online doctors or the online healthcare services are considered as somewhat weird in my opinion since it’s not practical since eventhough that technology’s improving rapidly, there’s still required a huge contribution from the human hands, or in this case the presence of doctors who stays in the hospital, providing direct medical service for the patients in need. As well as the fact that doctors are still required to perform physical treatments like surgeries or physiotherapies. Eventhough that the presence of it would be beneficial for both doctors and the patients itself since it can avoid any types of contamination that would be dangerous for the patients and the doctors as well as other patients from the medical facilities. At the end, eventhough that it would be good that if we have some kind of online doctors or e-health for instance, the presence of doctors and any medical experts would still be necessary since besides they ‘re still need to stay in contact with the patient. The data regarding diseases were obtained from experts, and we cannot argue that doctors are the experts that have the knowledge to construct such systems that would be beneficial of maybe not for humans in the long run.
This is a really good article right here. I strongly agree with this kind of innovation because it will save more time for people with less serious disease and prioritize the one with serious disease in the hospital. Another thing is that if this innovation have been remastered I think it will be more cheaper and so we can start developing it in our country too. Still, despite all of the positive effects that have been said there will always be a negative effect. One is the vulnerability to hacker. Today we live in an era where nearly everything is digital and when it is digital means that it can be hacked. Same as this technology, by deploying this suck kind of technology we are making ourselves more vulnerable to hackers. For example hackers can give a wrong diagnostics to a patient resulting in the patient buying the wrong medicine and dies. So to sum it up I think to be able to start or to develop this kind of innovation first we need to review what is lacking in this technology. -Dimas aditya Permana
ReplyDeleteIt is a good idea to meeting and consulting with doctors online, that means we don't have to go to hospital and stuck on a traffic jam. We can find a lot of website and application that we can download on our gadget, like Halodoc, Hello doctor, etc. When we sick, we likely to stay at home and all we want to do is nothing, basically stay at our comfort zone. This idea also make us easier meeting doctor, because we don't have to queuing at hospital. I think this idea will fits more for minor illness, for example flu, cough, hay fever, constipation, etc. Like the article says, what if you are dependent on all this electronic gear to communicate with your doctor and the power suddenly goes off? This electronic gear can send wrong information to your doctor or maybe give wrong prescriptions to you. I think if we want to apply this idea for all illness we still need a lot of improvement.
ReplyDeleteAs students, we all do have a very busy schedule and even busier than we are accustomed to. The pressure of studies nowadays is too much that we spend most of our time attending schools. To create a balance between study and other social interaction, we must learn and implement our time management skills, and while doing that sometimes we become a little bit careless about our own self, for example our health.
ReplyDeleteI strongly believe that health is one of the most important thing we should be concerned about. Good health is very important because a person with good health can put through a large amount of work in a short time, especially for students. But sometimes, students tend to ignore some little things such as having breakfast, consuming vitamins, having enough rest, and doing exercises. One thing that we should keep in mind is that these little things are actually crucial.
Being sick can easily ruin every plan that we have made. Very often I feel like I should probably see a doctor but can not really fit it in to my overbooked schedule, or just simply do not want to reschedule everything that I have prepared before. After reading this article above, I personally think online doctor consultation can be helpful for some reasons. The first reason is there’s no location boundaries for an online consultation. We can do it whereever and whenever we want as long as we have our gadgets with us. In addition, online consultation’s prescription process is also easy because the online doctor can prescribe us medication remotely and send the prescription to a pharmacy near us so we can just pick it up anytime. To sum up, I think we should consider an online doctor instead of an in person doctor visit.
ReplyDeleteI’ve only commented on this post now because I didn’t have anything interesting to say back then, now I have something in mind that I will explain later in this comment.
ReplyDeleteAs technology progresses, it becomes easier to find anything you need, including medical aid. It has been a famous thought experiment among scientists and futurists alike that a hundred years into the future, humans would practically become immortal; by either having the technology to prevent us from having sickness or injury again, or entirely shedding our organic bodies and transcending our complex mental networking processes into the durable hardware of an exterior processor. This article introduces us to the idea of having a mobile doctor with you everywhere you go. Advances in medical technology has made it significantly easier, not just for patients, but also for doctors as well. It would not be long before we begin to see robotic doctors the next time we go to a clinic, with pre-programed medical procedures to diagnose and treat any illness or medical emergency in the book. However, it has come to my attention recently that advances in technology might not bring such welcomed effects. I recently saw in a game called Subnautica that one in-game item contains the voice log of a survivor in a spaceship crash; the log says, and I quote:
“I’m not really a doctor. I know that’s what my ID says but I never have been. Cheated the medical exams. What does a doctor these days need to know about manually resetting bones? When was the last time a top surgeon actually cut someone open? That’s what the robots are for! Doctors these days read diagnoses off of computer readouts. For that, I’m perfectly qualified.”
This brings to light an interesting thought experiment; if medical technology continues to advance, wouldn’t we reach a future where human doctors would eventually become obsolete. Then it brings the question, “would doctors in this possible future still require to learn the same skills that doctors today have?”
