I think it’s true that one of the major reason why Jakarta is sinking right now is the overuse of groundwater. As a matter of fact, according to the teacher that taught me Earth and Space Science, the overuse of groundwater could potentially cause sinkholes. Sinkholes are holes that formed underneath the ground that is usually caused by internal erosion. Factors like human intervention and natural process are the major reasons why internal erosion happen. Relating back to the article, I think Jakarta is in a great danger of sinking its city underground. Because if this problem isn’t taken seriously, it could possibly lead to the forming of sinkholes or even worse, which is why I think the government should take a serious action regarding this issue. An action that the government could start doing is bringing awareness to the people. For example, overseeing each districts’ water system. By doing so, the government could prevent any illegal water system that didn’t meet the government regulation and permit. Of course, by only doing this won’t make a total difference on the issue but it’s at least a step further in saving Jakarta from sinking underground.
That video taught me something that are very unusual to me. Who knew that Jakarta is sinking right now and most of us aren't even aware of it. Even I just know that groundwater exist, I thought all of our water came from the springs and rains that we colleceted from water cathcers, or in some cases, imports from overseas. And from the video, ofcourse its bad for Jakarta. Becasue Jakarta is one of the biggest city of income in Indonesia, people come and go either from overseas or Indonesia itself. And most of people are searching for a job there in Jakarta. I know that theres a lot of places besides Jakarta, but if Jakarta falls now, its hard for use to rebuild fast enough before our economy collapse. I think the goverments should do something about this incident. Because we don't know when tragedy will fall upon us.
I have spent 18 years of my life in Jakarta. Despite that, I’ve never realized that Jakarta is really sinking right now. I didn’t know that some places in Jakarta had sunk by 4m since 1970. Probably, it is because I’ve never lived in an area where floods would last for more than three days. Some people said that the rise of sea level is caused by climate change, which is the consequence of global warming. For some reasons, that is actually a true statement. However, after I watched the video that you had posted, I’ve just known that there are other things that cause the sinking of Jakarta. This is actually a fairly new information for me. Nobody has ever told me that the use of ground water could be bad for our land. With the fact stated in the video which says “In some places it’s sunk by 4m since 1970.”, I believe that using ground water is one of the main causes to this disaster. Yes, I would consider this event as a disaster. Neither just for the residents of Jakarta or Indonesia. It is for the residents of earth. Because Jakarta is the centre of economic activity in Indonesia. International trades would be affected if Jakarta had submerged. The question is, how can we prevent this tragedy? It is stated in the video that 60% of Jakarta’s residents uses ground water for everything. Perhaps, we should actually alter the question. Why would people use the ground water? I think, people keep on using ground water, because rivers in Jakarta are mostly polluted. People can’t use the waters from Jakarta’s rivers for their everyday life. The best solution that I could suggest is to start doing simple things such as disposing garbage properly. The reason to this is that, if the rivers in Jakarta is clean, people would hopefully stop using the ground water. And Jakarta would probably stop sinking. So, let’s start doing these simple things, for the future of our capital city, Jakarta.
Honestly, I never knew that the use of groundwater could actually sink the land above it. Therefore, I did a little research regarding the matter after watching the video you posted yesterday. Apart from the fact that the sinking on some places in Jakarta could magnify the problems caused by flooding, if Jakarta were to sink further, more economical effects would follow and overwhelm the economy in Jakarta. One example, when a land sinks, the roads or highways on top would break and eventually collapse, causing traffic jams to occur or perhaps even swallow the lives of those people who were caught in the traffic. The loss of lives of these people would reduce the number of Jakarta’s economically active population. Meanwhile, for those who survived, they would have to commute to their workplace longer as they have to travel on other routes to finally reach their destination, hence a decrease in their productivity. Furthermore, knowing that the probability of subsidence taking place in Jakarta is definitely higher compared to other places in Indonesia due to the high number of tall buildings being concentrated there, this sounds a strident alarm for the government of Jakarta to really put their civil engineers into a serious work of rectifying their way of organizing the buildings they construct. The reason behind this mainly comes from the fact that in order to minimize the effects that groundwater-related subsidence would have on Jakarta, future construction plans should focus on areas whose soil have the least probability of containing ground water, such as lands composed of fine grained sediments with little spaces to allow very little rainwater to sink through. While the government is busy with its own task, the population of Jakarta can also contribute in helping by not being wasteful with the water they use in their daily lives, be it the water they use to take a shower, the water they drink, etc. Those people who sing while taking a shower or bath could switch from singing songs lasting from 3 to 5 minutes to songs that last only from 2 to 3 minutes. They also get to sing only once, not twice. Otherwise, the rule would just be useless. Lastly, just like what the student above me has put forward (Alexander), let’s start by taking simple steps in tackling the situation currently faced by Jakarta until the government finds a solution to allow Jakarta to finally subsist oneself.
I've heard about this case a couple of times in my high school years especially since the rumours about moving the capital city of Indonesia to Palangkaraya in Central Kalimantan. Although this isn't yet an official decision, I think this phenomenon needs to be handled wisely by the government. If this incident keeps getting ignored, it will caused major impact not only for the citizens of Jakarta it self, but for the whole island of Java. Just imagine a part of an island suddenly drowns, not around the edge, but the middle of it. That would be pretty scary. I agree to some of the statements that my friends already wrote. If we can't help the government by giving any solution to this problem, the least we could do is by not making it worse. We don't need to do research on alternative resources or make inventions about devices that could purify water from rivers. The simplest thing we could do is try to save some water, do showers quickly by not adding the amount of time for singing. I think this video should be seen by more people, especially citizens of Jakarta and surrounding and of course the government of Jakarta it self. So that they would be more aware of how serious the event is.
After watching the video, I came to realize that taking groundwater has that negative affect towards Jakarta. I have lived in Jakarta my whole life and knowing that taking groundwater is agreed to be a cause of why Jakarta is sinking hit me hard. However, I think that this cannot be stopped. It is because water has become a neccesity of human beings. By seeing the video we know that the groundwater we took is processed into drinking water. In my opinion, us as the young generation should think about an innovative product that can replace or at least minimize the intake of groundwater. I believe that the young generations, with the help of all advanced technologies that are present today, can provide a marvelous invention. Thus, to start the change immediately, we can be more efficient in using water by not letting the water run while we are brushing our teeth.
This video made me aware of how groundwater use could cause such a big problem. For most of us who are living in Jakarta, the use of groundwater is caused by poorly managed clean water services. The only thing that can set Jakarta free from groundwater usage is easily accessible and cheap clean water services. Apart from that, people in Jakarta have very low awareness about how groundwater use could cause a lot of trouble such as sinkholes and flood. If this such thing keeps getting ignored, i think there will be more problem waiting to come to Jakarta. As one of the most densely populated city in the world, Jakarta has a lot of streets and buildings on top of it, the use of groundwater will only cause the land to sink and if that thing happened, it is going to cause a major impact economically. the real question is, what can we do to prevent this such thing? As a person who lives in Jakarta I do think that awareness should be raised in the society that the use of groundwater is not good and people should learn that they are not allowed to litter or dispose their garbage in the river so that we can make use of the river as a source of clean water. Secondly, the government should build proper clean water service so people are prompted not to use ground water.
I’ve actually also heard rumors that Jakarta’s sinking by 10cm per year and in around 100 years, Jakarta might be separated from the rest of Java by a huge earthquake, but those rumors might not be true after all. Even though those rumors might not be true, we as a younger generation should help to protect and maintain our environment for our future generations. It is shown in the video that 60% of Jakarta’s residents use ground water for every aspect of their lives including drinking. Changing the water source for more that 50% of Jakarta’s residents might be an impossible thing to do, but according to the Melbourne Water Cooperation there are some alternative to useable and clean water. We could use rainwater collection as the first example. Rainwater tanks capture the best quality rainwater directly from roofs, before the water becomes polluted from the ground or drainage system. We could also use recycled water for many non-drinking purposes, such as providing water for: agriculture public spaces like parks, gardens and sports grounds household toilets, laundries and gardens. Although these methods might sound new and hard to implement but we could implement it in our daily life and save our environment.
Before I watched the video I actually never even heard of this theory or "rumors", admittedly the realization was quite stunning. I had heard of a different scientific theory in which the reason Jakarta kept having massive floods was because of the city being built on the places which was supposed to be rainwater reservoir but because of the lack of soil the water have nowhere to go but the city, but I never knew that the reality is that the city is slowly sinking from the continuous use of groundwater. To completely stop or at least mitigate this effect we' have to convince half the population to not use groundwater which in itself is almost impossible as half the population utilizes groundwater for everyday uses. I don't know the validity of this claim but if it is proven to be correct than we as a society have a long long day ahead of us to fix it.
Actually, I couldn't easily agree with the statement that of Jakarta is sinking caused by the usage of groundwater beneath the city, we were taught in school flood problem comes from global warming, greenhouse effect, and natural factors such as heavy rain. I tend to think that water usage in Jakarta isn't mostly coming from groundwater, we also have the water supply company and I believe they're using the reverse osmosis technology to conserve the water and provide it throughout the city. Therefore, I guess the Jakarta's main problem isn't the usage of water but the water sewage it may be blocked by something so the city can be easily flooded. We could also try the Tokyo flood control, whose made a huge hollow tunnel under the city to store water and prevent flooding. We ourselves also can prevent flood by disposing of the garbage in the proper place and make a good drainage system.
After watching this video about Jakarta, the capital city of Indonesia, sinking, it made me aware of the fact that using underground water can give bad effect to the surrounding environment. One of the solution of this problem is by building a giant sea wall in the northern part of Jakarta. this project includes building water reservoir, constructing walls along the coast and reclaiming lands. The giant sea wall stretches 52 kilometers long across the Java sea and will strengthen the embarkment in the north. This project started at 2014 and it is expected to be completed in 2025. But during the construction of the project there were some controversy. The building process destroys some part of corals inside the giant wall and erode nearby islands. The project got a short term ban in 2016 because they need to fulfill some requirements, but the ban was lifted in 2017. In my opinion, Jakarta will not sink if this project is completed.
Before I watched the video, the only reason I could think of as to why Jakarta always has a flood is due to the large amount of garbage the people there littering in the sewers. But after I watched the video, I just realized that a lot of people in Jakarta always use to much of groundwater and it actually affect the landscape of the city. And if these kind of case keep on going into the future, there will be a bigger problem that will affect the progress of developing Jakarta into an advanced city. While it is nearly impossible to convince the people in Jakarta to change their water supply in a matter of days, we could actually promote some companies that introduce an alternate water supply other than groundwater. Or the simplest way to reduce the recurring events of flood is to dispose our garbage in a proper place according to their category and to build a better drainage system from what we have today.
I found this video very interesting because it gave us so much information such as why Jakarta is sinking, how much it has sunk since 1970, and if Michael Jordan and Lebron James stand on top of each other, they would be 4 meters tall. But actually, this is interesting because of how they deliver this information to its audience. This video didn't have any speaker, it was just filled with images to illustrate and sentences to share the information. And with this method, people can understand it easily. It also raises awareness to the people of Jakarta of what is happening and what can cause it. But on the other hand, this video didn't give any solution to this issue, and because of that people won’t start a movement or action to solve this issue. They will just know that Jakarta is sinking, without thinking of solutions to stop it.
This is surely one of those environmental problem that didn’t get enough attention, especially by the citizens. I honestly never knew or heard about the fact that groundwater would actually sink the land, therefore i’am totally unaware of this problem, and i believe most people also felt the same way as i did. Therefore, considering that its not a very popular phenomena, i believe that the exact solution that is required to diminish this problem is by raising awareness towards the people about the current situation related to the usage of groundwater and its impact towards the land. Government and the people should contribute on disseminating this information to the public. By doing such an action, i believe that people will be more aware in term of water usage. In addition, one alternative solution to prevent this problem is can be done by eliminating our dependency towards the groundwater. There are tons amount of water resources in this world, therefore if we could utilize every single one of it, i can assure you that the sinking of our beloved capital city can be prevent.
Traffic, pollution, flood, are the common problems that have been occurred in Jakarta. But this video is giving another one crucial problem that Jakarta has to face, the sinking ground. To be honest, I’m actually agree upon the causes of the sinking ground of Jakarta. Many people does not realize that the amount of water usage that they consume is causing another damage for Jakarta. Moreover, water pollution is also one of the problems that also need to be solve. No wonder why the usage of clean water are very necessary for the people. By that, this information is certainly needs to be forward to all the citizens of Jakarta as well as the government. So that the people in Jakarta can be more responsible in terms of using their water supply, meanwhile the government can also identify and prepare for the solution in order to solve the problem. But if we think critically, reducing the amount of water usage is very difficult; especially for the huge amount of people like in Jakarta. So the government should really find an alternative solution in order to solve the problem.
The fact that Jakarta, a city I once called my home, is classified as one of the fastest sinking cities in the world is surely a rather bitter pill to swallow. In hopes of trying to fully understand the situation, I decided to do some light research. Does it seem funny that I don’t find it surprising when I found out that this misfortune was undeniably caused by man? The never ending greed of companies putting such a high price have resulted in illegal actions being made. Illegally dug wells developed across the city in order to fulfil the citizens’ desperate need of water. With the increasing amount of wells being dug, the space underground where clean water lives keep on dropping, and eventually the ground starts to pay the price. The city has become damaged and it has become a serious matter we all need to start considering. With the city’s endless political debates and problems, will it all be too late to find a solid solution? Or would the government enforce a mass movement in order to rescue this sinking city?
For an Indonesian that’s not from Jakarta hearing this isn’t really shocking. most people in Indonesia hearing this news/information will probably jump to the conclussion of Jakarta being overcrowded therefore a lot of bad things can happen to the city. Growing up my father used to say “a problem has many causes but to actually fix the problem most of the time you only need to fix the main cause of the problem.”. One of the reason why Jakarta is sinking is because of how Jakarta is so overcrowded therefore more clean water is needed therefore higher clean water usage but I believed that its not exactly the main reason. Compared to other densely populated city Jakarta supposed to have better water supply. I believed that the reason why Jakarta is sinking is because of how they gain their water supply. The best way to actually fix the problem is to stop using the groundwater. How do we get the 60% of water back you may ask. The solution for that is to use desalalination. Simply explained desalination is a process of converting salt water or sea water to clean fresh water. This is done by many middle eastern countries that has low supply of land water. Yes this project maybe costly but I believed that if the government and the people see Jakarta’s sinking land problem seriously this project may be proceeded
In my opinion, it cannot be helped that people are taking underground water especially the hotels in Jakarta because the one and only source of pure water is from deep ground water which is located down minimum 6-10 meters in lowlands. It can go deeper up to 20 meters or more (please correct me if I’m wrong as I only state the facts based on the information Google served me.). As the consequence, Jakarta is sinking by 10 cm per year and just like what my friends have written above, it’s only the matter of time that Jakarta is drowning and causing domino effects to other significant aspects of life if we do absolutely nothing about it. Furthermore, approximately 45% of underground water in Jakarta is containing salt. It means that the vacancy it provides is either making the land sink even more or filled by seawater.
Suggestions that can be taken into consideration are, first, desalination of the water sea. It is a process that extracts mineral components from saline water so that the salt level is decreased. Desalination can be an alternative way to replace underground usage to drink and take a bath. Secondly, if desalination is considered to be not economical, the government could make a large reservoir in Bogor to contain rainwater. It can be used to increase water reserves or underground water storage. Last but not least, is making the infiltration well around the house. It’s said that the function of infiltration wells are way more effective than biopori.
This video, to me, is very fascinating. I had no idea that Jakarta was sinking, let alone the cause of it. There were a few things that caught my eye in the video. First of all, the fact that Indonesians use ground water is true. Indonesians differ from other foreign citizens. Our government does not necessarily provide clean water like other countries. So, in term, most Indonesians other use ground water or water collected from the rain to fulfill their basic daily necessities. So, I would agree to the statement which said that 60% of Indonesians use ground water. Another thing that caught my eye was the point where the author stated that floods are getting much more frequent and heavier. As I was born and raised in Jakarta, I feel the direct consequences, yet I had no idea that was caused by the overuse of ground water. I feel that we, as Indonesians, have to stand together and figure out a solution before it is too late.
Excessive population in Jakarta results in the incremental increase of water demand. This creates the situation called overdraft, which the extraction of water keeps increasing, irrespective of the amount of proper groundwater station. The government has made several programs to lessen the damage, such as building pools and tunnels. However, it doesn’t show any way out. Most of the area in Jakarta are already located below sea level, which makes it easier for water to fill the land in the rainy season. Alternatives are limited remembering almost all of the surface water is contaminated due to the daily activities of the Jakarta citizen. Piped water is actually a great solution because the extraction and maintenance of the water source are by PDAM, which must be well-researched to minimize the risk of land subsidence. Nevertheless, there are still 40% of Jakarta citizen that doesn’t have the access to this piped water. Government and PDAM urgently need to find a solution to broaden the coverage, for the healthy and available water source in the future.
I only heard a little bit about Jakarta sinking since I don’t live in Jakarta, but after watching the video it had given me insight about what is happening. I personally think this problem should be taken seriously. People in Indonesia are not distributed well, in other words too much people living in a certain places especially Jakarta. Since there are a lot of people live in Jakarta, there would be a lot of buildings that use water. Therefore excessive water usage couldn’t be avoided. In my opinion, forcing citizen to move out of Jakarta or even Java would be impossible, therefore government should think of a way to prevent flood. By building a dam or a water blockage surrounding Jakarta would be more efficient and beneficial. Jakarta’s citizens should also be aware that their city is literally sinking and try to minimalize water usage. That’s all from me, thank you for reading.
Shocking! I am from Jakarta but I never consider this 'Jakarta is sinking' rumour is in fact a truth. But I think that this rumour is not considerably true at all, the use of groundwater beneath the city is a normal thing to do. For example, Londoners has used groundwater for ages but there's no rumour that London is sinking right?. From my point of view, these rumours is emerge because Jakarta was flood very often and I think the reason why Jakarta's flood problem is hard to solve because the environment is also in a unstable state. Because of global warming and the greenhouse effect, the rising of the sea levels is inevitable because the ice from the arctic and the antartica melts constantly as we speak. So I think the main solution to this kind of problem is to built a dam to protect and sustain Jakarta's shore for the long term.
After seeing the video above, I’m becoming more aware that day by day Jakarta is drowning below the sea level and I also realized that I have contributed to this issue all along. I think this is one of the side effects when a city become too urbanize and centralize, more people are moving to Jakarta each year and without us realizing the demand for groundwater continually rising, as a result Jakarta kept on sinking. As one of Jakarta’s Citizen I’m totally a shame of myself, If I didn’t watch this I probably wouldn’t aware of my environment. This is a serious issue, especially with the growth of infrastructure and buildings around the South Central Business District in Jakarta. More and more soil surface being cemented for the purpose of constructing buildings and roads, therefore during the rainy season water cannot be stored back to the soil due to the water being blocked by the cement or obstacles covering the soil.
Hello Mr. Adrian and my fellow friends. Jakarta is a really crowded city. That’s probably the biggest cause of why Jakarta is sinking right now. But In my opinion, this happens because the government was only focused to develop Jakarta and other big cities such as Surabaya, Medan etc. Rather than developing another city so most people from a little developing cities came to Jakarta to find a way of living. This problem should be solved by developing another city so that people will interested to make a fortune in that area. People also need to change their mindset, most people thought that living in a big cities is beneficial, but in reality it’s really hard to compete in a big city. If you don’t have some skill or a qualification you’re going to be “washed out” from the society. Those kind of people who “washed out” from the society will living below the poverty line, making a fortune by being a beggars, scavengers and etc. Making another social problem such as robbery, thuggery, prostitution, illegal trade and etc. I hope that we can solve this problem, not only the government but also us, as the citizen ot the country. Thank you.
This is a very nice video because it makes us realize what were happening around us especially, for those who live outside Jakarta. Unfortunately, the video didn’t give us solution to the problem. I did some research and found that the same problem happen in Shanghai, China. According to BBC, one solution is to limit groundwater extraction or pumping and recharge our aquifers. Another method is called “swift”. Swift is a project design by a team from Virginia lead by Ted Henifin, the general manager of Hampton Roads Sanitation District. In this project they would process waste water until they meet the standards for drinking water. Once the water is processed, the water will be pumped back to the aquifer. This project would perfectly suit Indonesia because we are a huge country which is rich in natural resources. The government should start their movement by making aquifers in Jakarta. I believe that adapting would not be a problem and Jakarta will no longer continue to sink.
This is the thing I hate the most in my country, imagine why there are still so many people who consider this not a serious problem. Our capital city is in a critical condition because the land subsidence that has occurred since 1940 can cause the city to sink.
Our country is an archipelago with a vast sea, why don't we stop using groundwater and start transforming sea water into fresh water. The problem is that if such technology is applied in Indonesia, groundwater companies will not like this, so that until now machines that can convert sea water into fresh water have almost never been in Indonesia.
One of the things that makes the problem in Jakarta unfinished is because of politics. Too many politicians don't have the right background. They are only obsessed with money and position. If only we could be like Netherland then Jakarta would be a very futuristic city. Netherlands has a very creative solution to overcome the exact same problem. This country builds dams so that the name of the city consists of "dam" elements such as AmsterDAM, RotterDAM and others. The most important thing is if we want to save Jakarta then we must be able to accept innovative ideas and not being obsessed with money and wealth.
It is sad to know the fact that Jakarta is slowly sinking, and in some places, it is sunk by 4 meters since 1970. The government should really need to be concerned about this situation. There are two Jakarta’s classic problem, one is the traffic jam and second is flood. Many people in Jakarta complaining about the flood every year that happens to Jakarta. Flood can cause damages to the environment and it is very detrimental in every aspect. The government need to think the alternative way instead of using groundwater that could damage the environment in a long term. The alternative way could be from recycled water, storm water harvesting, rainwater collection, and etcetera. It is important to not only depending on groundwater for the water sources, despite it doesn’t give a good impact to the environment, we don’t want our Jakarta to keep facing the same problem each year, which is flood.
The video has a great way of informing people about the reason behind the sinking of Jakarta. Not is it only short, it also uses two basketball players to illustrate a 4m height. That aside, I have never lived in Jakarta before. However, it is true that floods happen so many times in Jakarta. There was one time when my school and I were doing a study tour to Jakarta, we can almost go nowhere because it was so flooded, and it annoys us. This is also very bad for other people because Jakarta is the capital city of Indonesia and it is basically the center of all attention. The traffic there is always crowded and with flood as an addition, who knows what will happen. To be honest, I did not know that the reason is because people take too much water underground. It will be very hard to fix this issue because if most of the people in Jakarta are already using groundwater, then there will be so many houses that will need a change in its pipe.
The sinking problem in Indonesia’s capital which is Jakarta is unsettling. The sinking problem itself causing another problem to appear such as flood. Based on the video The cause of the sinking is the loss of the water that is trapped beneath the ground due to the water is taken and consumed by the people of Jakarta. As the ground level slowly sinking the flood problem start to appear. The reason is because the excess water can’t be flowed to the sea. The video shows that the problem might be hard to be solved since the majority in Jakarta keep consuming the water beneath the surface. The solution of the problem can be start from giving an alternative water source beside the water beneath the ground. Then if the sinking of the ground is starting to stop, now it is time to build a water bank to storage the excess water which is the flood. The last is if the ground level is desired to be put into the origin level is quite impossible.
I have lived in Jakarta since I was born, and I never knew that Jakarta have this kind of problem. All I knew is that Jakarta’s population is too crowded too many people are living in Jakarta, and it is the cause for the land to sink. After watching the video now I know that the usage of ground water is the cause of the land sinking. Knowing that Jakarta is the capital city of Indonesia and Indonesian citizen thinks if they move to Jakarta they have a much bigger job opportunity, people are moving from rural area to the the urban area. Since right now our life is dominated by technology, I’m hoping people will eventually find an invention or innovation to help this problem. But before moving to the big action, we can help by doing small things such as not taking a bath too long and use the water only as needed.
I knew that Jakarta was sinking from news on television, but I just know that Jakarta is sinking four meters from 1970. I also read on an article that say Jakarta actually is the fastest sinking-city in the world. I think government should be aware of this problem, and of course try to prevent Jakarta sinking even more. There are a lot of people lived in Jakarta and increase every year, people still think when you want work with high wages then go to Jakarta, I think how people think has to be changed. Actually they can have the same number of wages even though they are not working in Jakarta, and also when we lived in Jakarta our expense will be higher. Government needs to prevent people digging illegal wells, from an article I read the main cause of this problem is a lot of people digging illegal wells and draining the underground aquifers on which Jakarta rests.
This video gave me new insight as to why Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia is almost annually flooded. Every time the rainy season starts, Bogor (the city south of Jakarta which has a high rate of precipitation thus yielding a high rainfall intensity, and a higher altitude than Jakarta) is always monitoring its sluices to predict dangers of flooding in Jakarta. Some view Jakarta’s flood as the impact of Bogor’s excessive rain and Jakarta’s litter filled canals, causing the canals to overflow and flooding the city. I also viewed it that way until I saw this video. I think that other than Jakarta’s polluted river, the sinking is also a huge problem for Jakarta. I really hope that there is no other cause as to why Jakarta is often flooded, and Jakarta’s government can address this issue wisely and as quickly as possible so that its not too late for our beloved capital of Indonesia.
Because if this problem isn’t taken seriously, it could possibly lead to the forming of sinkholes or even worse, which is why I think the government should take a serious action regarding this issue. An action that the government could start doing is bringing awareness to the people. For example, overseeing each districts’ water system. Of course, by only doing this won’t make a total difference on the issue but it’s at least a step further in saving Jakarta from sinking underground.

ReplyDeleteEither "all districts’ water systems"
Or "each district's water system".

ReplyDeleteHonestly, I never knew that the use of groundwater could actually sink the land above it.
ReplyDeleteI've heard about this case a couple of times in my high school years especially since the rumours about moving the capital city of Indonesia to Palangkaraya in Central Kalimantan.
ReplyDeleteAfter watching the video, I came to realize that taking groundwater has that negative affect towards Jakarta.
ReplyDeleteThis video made me aware of how groundwater use could cause such a big problem.
ReplyDeleteI’ve actually also heard rumors that Jakarta’s sinking by 10cm per year and in around 100 years, Jakarta might be separated from the rest of Java by a huge earthquake, but those rumors might not be true after all.
ReplyDeleteBefore I watched the video I actually never even heard of this theory or "rumors", admittedly the realization was quite stunning.
ReplyDelete
ReplyDeleteActually, I couldn't easily agree with the statement that of Jakarta is sinking caused by the usage of groundwater beneath the city, we were taught in school flood problem comes from global warming, greenhouse effect, and natural factors such as heavy rain.
ReplyDeleteBefore I watched the video, the only reason I could think of as to why Jakarta always has a flood is due to the large amount of garbage the people there littering in the sewers.
ReplyDeleteI found this video very interesting because it gave us so much information such as why Jakarta is sinking, how much it has sunk since 1970, and if Michael Jordan and Lebron James stand on top of each other, they would be 4 meters tall.
ReplyDeleteThis is surely one of those environmental problem that didn’t get enough attention, especially by the citizens.
ReplyDeleteTraffic, pollution, flood, are the common problems that have been occurred in Jakarta.
ReplyDeleteThe fact that Jakarta, a city I once called my home, is classified as one of the fastest sinking cities in the world is surely a rather bitter pill to swallow.
ReplyDeleteFor an Indonesian that’s not from Jakarta hearing this isn’t really shocking. most people in Indonesia hearing this news/information will probably jump to the conclussion of Jakarta being overcrowded therefore a lot of bad things can happen to the city.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, it cannot be helped that people are taking underground water especially the hotels in Jakarta because the one and only source of pure water is from deep ground water which is located down minimum 6-10 meters in lowlands.
ReplyDeleteSuggestions that can be taken into consideration are, first, desalination of the water sea.
ReplyDeleteExcessive population in Jakarta results in the incremental increase of water demand.
ReplyDeleteI only heard a little bit about Jakarta sinking since I don’t live in Jakarta, but after watching the video it had given me insight about what is happening.
ReplyDeleteShocking!
ReplyDeleteAfter seeing the video above, I’m becoming more aware that day by day Jakarta is drowning below the sea level and I also realized that I have contributed to this issue all along.
ReplyDeleteHello Mr. Adrian and my fellow friends.
ReplyDeleteJakarta is a really crowded city.
ReplyDeleteThis is the thing I hate the most in my country, imagine why there are still so many people who consider this not a serious problem. Our capital city is in a critical condition because the land subsidence that has occurred since 1940 can cause the city to sink.
ReplyDeleteOur country is an archipelago with a vast sea, why don't we stop using groundwater and start transforming sea water into fresh water.
ReplyDeleteThe video has a great way of informing people about the reason behind the sinking of Jakarta.
ReplyDeleteThe sinking problem in Indonesia’s capital which is Jakarta is unsettling.
ReplyDeleteI have lived in Jakarta since I was born, and I never knew that Jakarta have this kind of problem.
ReplyDeleteI knew that Jakarta was sinking from news on television, but I just know that Jakarta is sinking four meters from 1970.
ReplyDeleteThis video gave me new insight as to why Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia is almost annually flooded.
ReplyDelete
