22 comments:

  1. The most 3 important rules of marketing get to know your customers, deliver what you promise, and always have the next steps. I think the first rule is the significant rule to be a good marketer. If you know your customers well, you can treat them better. Imagine if you know that your customers are really busy and they don’t like to do some conversation with you, they just want to deal the product and then they go home. But, you as a marketer, treat them like, you talk anything to them, you make some conversation that it's not important to discuss, I think they will avoid you. The second rule is a basic rule to make your customers be loyal with you. For instance, when you offer them a product but the product is not available because you have to do a preorder, if you promise them that the product will come for 3 days and the product come on time, they will trust you as a good marketer. The last rule is to always have the next steps. It is important for the marketer to keep their motivation to reach their goal. So, they have the target and plan to aim.

  2. A few months ago, I read a book written by Duncan Clark. It was a biography about Jack Ma, the founder of a giant Chinese e-commerce company. From that book, there is one great point that I learnt. In building a business empire, Jack Ma believes that we have to prioritize the customers and the workers first, not the stakeholders or the shareholders. And I think that is very true. Because after all, the people who will pay to a business entity are the customers, and the people who will bring customers are the workers who will provide the services and interact directly with the customers. Thus, I think the first rule that is essential in marketing is to understand your customers. I believe that all customers always want to have the ‘feeling’ that they are special. By asking what the customers want, what they need, and showing that we care about them, there is high tendency that the customers will feel that it is important to support us as well. The next important rule is actually related to the first rule, which is ‘involve them and they will understand’. I believe that every customer has the right to be indirectly involved with the company. It is their right to give feedbacks and critics about the products they get. And as a company, we also have to let them know the progress that we’ve made to our products, so communication is key here. Remember, customer is king. And, the last golden rule for marketing is always to ‘start with why’. I got this phrase from a book by Simon Sinek called ‘Start with Why’. In that book, he stated that some big companies are more successful than others because they market their products by stating the purpose of the products they sell, and not what they sell. People would like to know why the products will be beneficial for them.

  3. To be a good marketer, the first thing we need to understand is the rules. When we already know the rules, we will understand how marketing works better. For me, the first most important rules is to know what you’re aiming for, because when we work as a marketer, we have to know our targets. When we have our targets, we will be more concentrate on achieving that target and will work with more focus. The second most important rule is to get to know your customers. When we know our customers, we will know what they need and will be able to serve them better. When we can serve them better, our sales will increases. The third most important rule is to be consistent. Consistent is the key to be a professional marketer. We have to be consistent towards our customers, works, and performances. When we have fulfilled these three rules at least, hopefully we can be a better marketer and serve our customers better.

  4. Rules are meant to be broken. I would implement this rule in my in my future business with the note that it is only to a certain extent. I believe that you should always have the possibility to make an exception in extraordinary cases.
See the forest not the trees. In Dutch we have a similar saying: not being able to see the forest through the trees. I believe that what it means is that you should always focus on the bigger picture instead of individuals. I would definitely put that saying on my office wall.
The third and last “rule” that I would like to highlight is: “the whole is greater than the sum of its parts”. In my opinion this means that when everybody works well together, the final result will be better than expected, when looked at the individual qualities. A good example for this would be a football team. Not the team with best players will become champion, but the team that has the best teamwork. For instance, look at how Leicester City FC won the Premiere League a couple of years ago.

  5. I think one major thing that marketer should consider is how to make the customer understand the idea that a marketer wants them to receive. One rule that marketer should do in order for the customer to understand the whole idea is by involving them. By involving the customer, we as a marketer can explain our idea better to our customer in more depth as well as understanding the customer’s needs. This action can be done through a dialogue, physical touch (handshake), etc. But sometimes customers might not be able to understand what we’re trying to communicate due to the language we used. That’s why sometimes a marketer should consider changing their words and not the idea. Marketers should remember to use the right word choices when they’re trying to speak to the customers, in order to market their idea in a more persuasive way. Last but not least, a marketer should deliver what they promised, so there won’t be any problems with the customers in the long run. By delivering what’s promised, we can establish relationships with our customers and form loyalty. Loyalty is important since they help bring other potential customers, which helps our company significantly.

  6. For me, 3 most golden rules from 40 golden rules of marketing above are the first one is ‘Know What You’re Aiming At’ because without knowing our target or our goals in doing business, we will not perform our best, and we sometimes feel confused in deciding something. Secondly, ‘Be Consistent’ is very important in doing business. Sometimes, people only excited about working in the beginning, then when they have many obstacles, they tend to give up and their working performance starts to decline. That is why being consistent in doing business is very vital. Last one, ‘Always have a next step’, this reminds me that by having a next step, we already prepare a plan in the beginning, by making a plan, it will helps us in many ways. It makes everything become simpler, and easier, because we know what we have to do. Those are my opinion about the 3 most golden rules, but i would like to add a point from above that also feels important for me. ‘Always have a deadline’. Deadline is very important for me, as well as for people when they are doing business. By setting a deadline, it will make us more productive and force us to do what we have to do. In the end, we do not postponing our work and we can finish it on time.

  7. The 40 rules of marketing above are really important. But, when we only need 3 rules only I will choose rule number 18, which is be consistent, rule number 12, which is be different, and the last is rule number 39 which is delivering what we’ve promise to the customer. Why I only choose that 3 out of the 40 other rules? First, it is because being consistent is a way to success. Not only that, consistent can be in a good way in maintaining relation between customer and consumer like people in the insurance. Then the second is be different. Why being different is important? Because by being different from others, people tend to remember us more than other people. In marketing this is important, so our customers didn’t forget us easily and remember us as an ordinary customer. The last is delivering what we’ve promise to the customer, Marketers usually forget what they’ve promise to the customers and usually they run after the customers payed several amounts.

  8. I would say that the most essential rule of marketing is to pick the problem you want to solve. When you are running a business, remember that you are human; you cannot solve everything, and you don't need to solve everything. Every marketing project will have a deadline, so list down your priorities. What is the biggest problem? Why are your customers not attracted to the product? Fix it and try to generate ideas - fresh ideas are great, but you can always try to find inspirations from other companies. There are tons of companies from different countries out there who succeed in marketing their products. Marketing needs budget, and most of the time, they are costly. So, ensure that it will result in sales. Increase in sales may not happen overnight due to marketing; it may be a long-term effort. Notice how Gojek gives discounts or even free rides during the first few years of conducting their business. They are burning money, yet they are actually attracting a large market due to the affordable price they offer. Perhaps it takes a long time to reach the breakeven point, but they are getting there. Last but not least, deliver what you promise. Brand loyalty is needed, and once you lie to your customers, in a digital world like today they may actually write negative reviews online if they are not satisfied with your products. Hence, always aim to gain your customer's trust in order to maintain them as your customers.

  9. I don’t really agree with the point that you should know what you’re aiming at. At some point especially when you just started your business and have no specific or loyal customers, I think it’s best for you just the let the business roll and see the market demand. Aiming at something and not reaching it can really stress you out. Once the business has started and ran with its regular pace, then its important to aim at something and target it because, by then you will have a specific market. I also agree with the point that you should prioritize your customers first because, as a customer, I really want to feel special and be appreciated once I buy some products, and as a producer, we also need to listen to what customers think about our products and improve based on their critics and by satisfying them with our products, we can gain loyalty from the customers and it will attract other customers that will help our company to grow bigger.

  10. I think, the most basic rule in the marketing is the last one. Give it a chance. In marketing, you will not be a great person if you don't give yourself a chance to proof that you can. Not giving a chance means that you don't start. Maybe you're afraid to fail or something. But the truth is that all marketing expert, can be an expert because they started thair career without fear. They fail so many times, they feel drop so many times, but they keep rise up and study from their mistakes. If you don't start, you will not know what you're not good at, and you cannot study to make the better you. At least try. That's what sucessful people said. Because with try, you know what part of you that you have to fix. Admit when you made a mistake is also important. It means that you are a responsible person. You're willing to take punishment of your action, of your mistake. Well that's great. I think that's two of the interesting rules for me.

  11. The rules that are stated here really made me think of how does marketing works? Although some of them doesn’t make sense because this article was a material for EWS class unlike the other rules, that made sense, are the ones that we can call concise. This are the factors that people used to maintain marketing jobs. Because marketing is one of a management process which goods and services move from concepts to the customer. It’s based on thinking about how to fulfill the customer needs and satisfaction in terms of the kinds of business. I once learned from my mom’s book, it’s a book that made by a retired professor of marketing. What I learned is, marketing is not about exchanging your product that has value for the customer, but it is more to the concern of selling with the tricks and techniques of getting people to exchange their cash for your product, but it’s really an implication of management and time.

  12. In marketing, the most important thing that we need to focus on is of course our audience, getting to know our customers, because at the end of the day in marketing we are engaging with our customers, therefore a good relationship might help later. Marketing plans are also good because when we plan on something, it tends to work accordingly. Planning is good for short term and long term result. We also need to deliver what we promise, this is another thing that is important in marketing, sometimes companies promise to deliver certain things but then they do not actually deliver and it might disappoint the customers and damage the company’s reputation, it is better if we deliver what we promise so that we have our customer’s trust and therefore they might turn loyal. Being different also help in marketing, people love something new and different and unique that is what the people want. Being different would attract more customers.

  13. Marketing is a very crucial factor in determining the success of a company or product. Marketing can literally mean everything for the product you are selling because it is going to set how people view the product. After reviewing all 40 of the rules, I have chosen my personal picks for the three most instrumental rules in modern day marketing. The first rule I chose was the first rule, which says “Rules are Meant to be Broken”. I think, in the disruptive business era that we currently live in, the rules and business principles established by the elder generations would have to be broken in order for us to advertise to the modern world that we can fulfill what they want, need, and expect from our product. The second rule I chose is the fourth rule, which says “Know What You’re Aiming At”. In my opinion, to market a company or a product, the marketing team must have a specific target market in order to focus sales, budget accordingly, and maximize profit margins. If we make the target market advertised to is too broad, chances are it is going to seem less appealing to people who have more specific needs. The third and final rule I think a marketing team should emphasize on is the twelfth rule, which says “Be Different”. I think in order for us to market our product, we need to be able to differentiate our product from the rest. In more specific terms, we need to be able to identify our product as the superior product.

  14. Although a majority of the rules seem to be correct, there are some rules in my opinion that are not entirely accurate or just outdated. Firstly, I don’t quite agree with the second rule, which states that marketing must result in sales. This is not always the case for some companies. In my opinion, advertisements for some companies, like the infamous ‘Shopee’ advertisements, annoy some viewers, yet the company gains reputation for what it really does regardless of the marketing plans. Another I disagree with is rule number 23, which states that viral marketing is a tactic. I think that, although it is an option, viral marketing often makes the product marketed seem more of a joke rather than an applicable product. Finally, a rule that I think is a bit outdated is the sixteenth rule, which says a company should be consistent in its products. This might be true back in the day, yet now, what the current society is looking forward to is how surprising the innovations will be. If we stay consistent throughout our whole marketing plan, a majority of the society will consider us boring. Sorry to say this Blackberry, but that means you.

  15. These rules are very inspiring for me as i haven’t really thought about these out of the box tips for marketing purposes. I personally think that most of the rules are useful and applicable but this doesn’t aplly to some of the rules such as don’t get caught in the hype, just say no to Jargon. I believe that having a jargon is important because i believe that a Jargon is the centre and the life of a company which helps give motivation to the worker and it help sells the product. What i mean by that is that a jargon will affect the company’s selling point, ethics and business conduct. Aside from that getting caught in the hype is a good thing. I think so as when a market for a product is hyped up especially by the millenials the market demand will be very high as younger generations tend to be impulsive buyers. They tend to buy hyped products as o keep up with the ongoing trend ignoring their financial condition. Following the market trend can increase sales drastically. I agree about the rule of getting to know your customers but i personally think that this rule doesn’t apply to all kinds of business . Getting to know your customer is a good marketing strategy for luxury goods where the buyers can get their product customed. However this doesn’t apply to products for the general public as goods for the public should be standardized in features and quality.

  16. Theres a research that says working in marketing field has recently become one of the most challenging jobs. Not only do marketers need to have creative and logical minds but also they have to be always up to date with continuously changing marketing field. If you run a business you have to be prepared with consumers as well. Getting across to today’s consumer is a complex process that requires adjusting your efforts to developing trends. There are books and lots of seminars that are created to prepare marketer to be different and well prepared for the real world. The marketing world itself has evolve by using social media platform. Nowadays bloggers, vloggers and other social media influencers have the power of shaping consumer opinions. Many brands have started to recognize the power of cooperation with influencers and more often engage them in their campaigns and general marketing communication. So ‘Know What You're Aiming At’.

  17. In my opinion the 3 most important rules in marketing are: Know what you are aiming at, get to know your costumer and deliver what you promise. The first one is very crucial because in business, the first thing to do is to set a goal. If we have no clue what we're aiming at, our next steps will be messy and unclear. The second is "Get to Know your Costumer", by knowing our costumer we can understand their necessities and preference. Moreover, having a good communication with our costumer is the key in marketing, like the Indonesian famous quote that said "Costumers are the King." Last but not least, Deliver What You Promise. Sometimes when I purchase something the products are not exactly like what the producer say in the advertisement, and of course I get upset. Hence, it is very important to deliver products that are high in quality to satihsfy the costumers, as well as to make ah good image/branding for the products that we're selling.

  18. The three most essentials rules to be implemented within the marketing world are to know your customer, be different, and to realise that ‘change’ is your friend. The term of “knowing your customer” is not as simple as knowing their names, ages and income, yet it is also about knowing the more in depth things such as their character and behaviour. For example, we should understand our customers hobbies, interest, taste, music they listen to, things they read and watch, etc. This rule will not only help us to customise and adjusting the product according to the customer preference, but it’ll also put us ahead of the game due to our knowledge and relationship we built upon our customer. The second golden rule is to be different. It is indeed one of the most cliche tips within the marketing industry, however i still believe that it would have a great impacts towards the product competition. And the last golden rule that i chose is “change is your friend”. This tips is truly important because i believed that “change” has another meaning of “improving”. Therefore, to learn and understand your past mistakes and create an improvement towards it will help you to perfect the final result and future decision making.

  19. Marketing is a key factor in a successful business. After reading these 40 golden rules of marketing, i learned how complex marketing is. If i have to choose 3 from from above i will pick number 2, number 12, amd number 39. First i believed that the marketing must result in sales, because marketing your product requires a bunch of money that must be spent well to result in sales and profit. Second i believe that the marketing must be different than any other company marketing plan, it could use a very creative way to send message to the target consumer so they will be interested to get the product. Lastly i believe the marketing promises must be delivered to the customer as right as possible, because reputation is built with trust from consumers and it can be achieved by keeping your standard high and keep delivering high quality result to satisfy consumer. Thats the 3 rules that i picked from the 40 rules.

  20. I believe that the most fundamental rule of marketing is to pick the issue you need to execute. First you need to understand that you can’t solve everything when you are maintaining a business, you are simply a human. In business, each marketing project will have a due date. Because of the due date, you have to be able to set your priorities and list them down whether you like it or not. When you are running a business, you need to fix the issue when your consumers are not interested to buy or use your product. I believe that is the main problem when it comes to business. I think you can solve the issue by come up with a new idea and there is nothing wrong with attempting to discover motivations from different organizations or company. There are huge amounts of organizations and from various nations out there who succeed in advertising their products and services. I also think that marketing means to promote, and to promote needs a lot of money. But mostly, if the marketing are costly then the sales will go to the roof. For example, the company Gojek often give away discounts, promo, and free rides during the time when Gojek first launch. In a perspective, Gojek are losing money. But it is also a clever way of promoting the reasonable price and value that they offer, and of course because of this marketing technique they attracts a huge market of consumers. Maybe it requires a long investment to achieve the equal the initial investment point, yet they are getting closer. I believe that the most important thing is that you, the producers, deliver what you guarantee. Why? Because a brand needs a loyal customer. Once you don’t deliver the thing that you guarantee to your customers, they will write a bad review on your company and sure this will affect you and your company.

  21. My rules of marketing that I pick from the list is Know What You’re Aiming At, Target Your Messages, and See and Be Seen. When making advertisements for a product’s marketing, there must be a message the product is trying to deliver and get the customer to hear and pay attention to the product. If the goal of the marketing is to attract customers, then the advertisement must make the product look attractive and make people think they need to buy it immediately. If the goal of the marketing is to make the product and firm famous, the advertisement must be interesting for people to pay attention to and listen about. If a company makes an advertisement without a goal or a message, then it’s just useless. The last rule is for firms to pay do research of the market and see what they want and like. Then they have to use their results and put it to the advertisement to make the product more noticeable for the customers.

    ReplyDelete
  22. The three rules of marketing I choose is the first three on the list. The first rule is obvious; it means to break limits of what you set yourself. Marketing must result in sales is very important, because the whole point of marketing is to make your product look good and make people want to buy them. If they don’t create sales or interest for people to try and purchase them, then the company is only making a loss because they cannot cover the cost it took to make the advertisement. I find the third rule interesting and I actually don’t really understand it. The way I read it, it means that we have to have a plan on how the product is going to be promoted but not too detailed. By planning only very little and generally, the company can change and be flexible with their plan so that they can change if something turns out bad or doesn’t happen the way we plan it to go.
