Tips on Having a Baby Alone in Jakarta?

Hello,

I'm new to these forums. I'm a white American ESL teacher who's put in a solid 5 months ongoing at my EF school. I am 3 months pregnant, the father is a Muslim native Indonesian. However, I'm tense about my job and so on. I hope this is the right forum to post this question in. I have no contact with the father.

Here are my questions:

  • What are my rights in terms of my job at EF? There's nothing in the contract against pregnancy. I've had no complaints from students either, all seems to be going well. The only possible issue is there might be whiny conservative Muslim parents who's probably got 2 wives and 10 girlfriends.
  • How do you get a KITAS for a baby?
  • How difficult is it to find a job in other countries with a child? Such as Vietnam, Thailand, and China? I don't have my TESOL

Note that my family is not being very supportive, so I have to rely on myself.

Thanks in advance!!

  1. Although I am a native Jakartan, it's a shame that I'm not quite familiar with the term KITAS and TESOL. However, I am have several experiences by being a student for 12 years and had several cases of pregnant teachers. Usually, teachers and lecturers are given the privilege to take a several months of break from work (Cuti in Bahasa Indonesia), when the person is pregnant. The length of the break usually depends on the institution, often times it should be around 5 up to 7 months. The important matter to take notice is that the break should also cover the time of recovery and aid to the baby. Do not forget that after the baby is delivered, you also need to take care of it! So, to be safe, request your institution for a 7 months break starting from when you're 4-5 months pregnant until 2-3 months after your baby is delivered. Another option should also be a babysitter, but it is a very risky one since most babysitters in Jakarta can't be easily trusted, so it is safer to find someone you can trust. Good luck!
