Pen and Computer

You can write only with your brain, but whether to process your thoughts with a computer or pen and paper is your first practical choice as a writer. I suppose it is still possible to ignore the computer and write just with pencil and paper. A surprising number of writers, including Martin Amis, A. S. Byatt, Ted Hughes, John Irving, Joyce Carol Oates, Susan Sontag, John Updike, and Edmund White prefer longhand for serious writing. But the advantages of the computer are so great that it seems almost irresponsible to pass them up. A computer greatly accelerates editing procedures, allowing you to take a piece through far more drafts than you could otherwise. On-screen correction is so easy that people of all ages find the process relaxing, even pleasurable. Computers give a sense of freedom from lasting error that no one who has experienced it will want to give up. I shall never forget the excitement I felt, twenty-five years ago, when I discovered that words had ceased to be indelible. So in this book, I shall take for granted that you will probably use a computer for some, if not all, the processes of writing.

Many people use a computer throughout and never feel the need to print out a hard copy. Mathematicians, in particular, produce papers and even books entirely onscreen. In principle, it is possible to write and publish electronically, without ever lifting a pen or pencil. For some, however, especially those engaged in literary work, this may not always be the way to get the most out of the computer.

Computers of the present generation have certain limitations, arising from the screen display, which for some people tend to complicate the process of writing long pieces. Even with the best flat-screen monitor, you can’t comfortably read long texts. And you can’t actively browse with any clear sense of where you are in the text.

Good writing depends on extensive reading, not only previous reading of other works but also frequent scans of your own piece, the one you’re working on. Yet if it runs to any considerable length, uninterrupted reading on-screen is difficult. A monitor’s field of view is necessarily local, limited to about 150 words—much less than a printed page. This is fine for drafting a postcard; but not for extensive reading or browsing. To scroll through successive screenfuls is hardly an adequate substitute: it is too fragmentary and remote from ordinary reading. In active browsing, you need to be able to skim or read a page or two here, check the index there, and jump back or forward at will, always aware of structure and proportion, always aware of each passage’s relation to the text as a whole.

Working by the screenful can have the unfortunate consequence of smoothing your writing prematurely. For onscreen correction is so easy that the grammar and word choices gel too soon, without enough consideration being given to the overall sequence or the underlying structure. Decisions about the piece as a whole may tend to be passed over so that the end result is polished enough, but boring: flat, shapeless, even garrulous.

Some have gone so far as to argue that the fluency and facility of composing on-screen are positively bad for writing since they make you forget the reader’s experience of your piece. The beautiful screen is supposed to delude us into a false consciousness, flattering us with the illusion that technical procedures (correction of typos, format changes, boilerplate insertions, rearrangement of phrases, and the like) can do it all by magic. You cast wonderful

spells, but find they are somehow not enough. But the evidence for all this (cited by Edward Mendelson in a 1990 Academic Computing article) is no longer thought compelling. In any case, the remedy is a very simple one: any limitation you feel in the computer’s display can be overcome by printing out a hard copy. I shall assume, in fact, that you will work from printouts whenever you find it more convenient to do so.

Composing on-screen, revising as you go, is obviously fine for short letters, emails, and routine reports. But many people find that anything longer than 250 words or so—and certainly any competitive or ambitious piece that needs much thought—is better printed out for reading and drafting. For many writers, drafting is not a detour but the best way forward.

An additional reason for alternating screen and paper applies only to some writers, who find their thinking in front of a screen slower. After a time the computer has for them a dulling, even stupefying effect. Others report quite the reverse, finding that the computer’s pleasurability encourages thinking on-screen, as Michael Heim claims in Electric Language (1987). People differ; but it does no harm to take a break from the screen every half hour or so, for your circulation’s sake.

Some writers find it helps to jot down the earliest draft on paper, where they can vary the size of words for emphasis, use abbreviations, and resort to private symbols. Even illegible scribbles can be turned to account: paper writers can postpone resolution of ambiguities, defer grammatical structuring, delay lexical choices, allow their minds to explore vague surrounding associations, and perhaps encounter serendipities. For them, the computer closes off too many syntactic options, and calls for definitions of ideas that are still inchoate. Other writers, however, more at ease on the keyboard, value the rapid rearrangement and deletion that can be done on-screen. Inserts can go in as they come to mind, without the need for memos or post-its. In drafting, the choice between pen and keyboard may be partly a matter of age and partly of training and temperament.

At any rate, when you have reached the stage of a rough outline, you may want to print it out for ease of reading. Working with the draft on paper, you can read it more easily, and see whether each passage is proportioned and positioned where it should be. But don’t forget to have the latest draft on-screen, ready for you to slot in corrections, references, and new ideas.

Except for a complete beginner, computer spellchecks can waste time. They have a way of giving the correct spelling of the wrong word. Better to have a good dictionary on disk (or on your desk), and consult it for yourself. When you work on the final draft, though, a spellcheck sometimes finds inconsistencies. A grammar check, too, if it is a very good one, can be instructive. But again it is better still to learn some grammar. If you could have a program to write the whole piece for you without effort on your part, would you buy it? If the answer is yes, read no further.

  1. After reading this article, I realized that there are various reasons on why people prefer to use pen and paper rather than a computer and vice versa. It’s stated in the article that writing using pen and paper is more preferable to some people because some people feel the need to print out the hard copy and use sticky notes to revise the mistakes. Meanwhile, there are also large amount individuals who prefer to write on computers because of grammar corrections that make editing so much easier. In this case I have two different opinions. I actually prefer to write with pen and paper because I feel like when I write on paper I would remember what I wrote. However, technology has advanced in such ways that “writing” in computer has become an easier alternative. Although I do enjoy writing in paper, I think that it is only suitable if we were writing only few pages because it wouldn’t be convenience to write hundreds of pages of writing with pen and paper. On the other hand, I strongly agree reading from the hard copy rather than from the computers because it would be easier to write notes and staring at a computer screen for too long could strain the eye. In conclusion, I do prefer working with pen and paper for only few pages of writing and reading from the hard copy is more to my liking.

  2. In this era, technology really is taking over the world. Everybody has a phone, from the old-fashioned to the modern new-release phones. So many things have changed, for example: people aren’t sending letters to each other anymore because it takes more time and effort so they use phone and other technology innovations instead; same thing goes with phone calls; video call; it makes everything so much easier, because instead of seeing each other in person we could just phone or video call them. This realization just hit me after I read this article. Will papers be replaced with technology innovations? Because other than employees and college students, I believe people are still using papers. To be frankly, I prefer writing on my computer because as it is stated in the article that it would correct you and it makes editing way easier with less time and effort. On the other hand, I think this may be the solution to the biggest problem that we have. Global warming. Because, too many trees have been logged down just to produce papers, this will save all the trees from logging. However, we also need a time apart from our gadgets for the sake of mind, because at the end of the day we are human beings, we need to socialize and interact with people.

  3. I consider myself as a typer instead of a writer. This is because I personally prefer on using laptop or computer to type instead of pen and paper to write. I don’t have any particular reason why I like computer more than pen and paper, but I guess it is just because of repeated habits. I got familiarized with computers since the age of 10. My parents paid someone to teach me how to operate computer. The first thing I learned was how to turn on and off computers, how to create a document in Microsoft Word, and how to play a PC game. I remember that the first game I played on the computer is Virtual Cop 2 by SEGA.

I’ve been using computer ever since and I was the number one fast-typer person at school. The average typing speed is 40 WPM (words per minute) while my record is 84 WPM with the accuracy of 97%. For me, typing on computer has eased every job related to documents. By this I mean that it saves a lot of time compare to writing on paper.

However, I would say that it is personal preference to choose which one is better of those two. Other people could say pen while I say computer. The most important thing is that which one brings more benefit to you.

  4. I can see why people would prefer pen and papers instead of computers, I personally enjoy writing using my hand because I feel like writing with my hand helps when I have ideas to share or write, I feel more connected to what I write on the paper and sometimes could be more honest or meaningful. I guess it explains why back in the day people write with their hands, could be proven by earlier poems found hand-written by the poets. Nowadays technology is growing faster by the minute, companies competing on making the latest and greatest technology, computers is one of them, now there are loads of computers which utilizes touch screen to make work easier. It goes with the trend so more people uses computer to do work faster, typing is more convenient compared to writing also when you use something like Microsoft Word when there is a spelling mistake or grammar error it tells you so you do not have any error or mistake. I prefer writing using my hand when I am making notes but when it comes to essays and other work I prefer using computer, in some occasions I prefer doing work by writing but based on the amount of homework that I have to do nowadays it is almost impossible to do all my work by writing.

  5. Personally, I am a person that finds it difficult to write in a good way (I mean by the quality of the handwriting). However, I found it faster to write, especially essays that requires idea from scratch like for example business essays, sociology essays and so on. Since you can just directly write it on your paper, unlike using keyboards when you have to look at the keypads as well as the letters that written on screen which can cause frequent mistypes. And since high school, my sociology teacher has encouraged me to write instead of typing when it comes to the submissions of essays and also most of my school’s exams required us, the students to write more than 8 pages of essays from different subjects like business studies, sociology and sometimes english. I personally did not really in to type the documents using my gadgets, even though that it’s somewhat easier, for me it’s quite boring to type instead of to write using pen and papers. This might be because i’m quite a slow writer compared with my friends but I wrote faster than my seatmates back in the high school. Also, I heard from someone which I forgot who he/she is that writing using pens and papers can help you to memorise the topics being written easier which might helps you to master the topic better. Which motivates me both to write more and have a better handwriting.

  6. In my view, people have different ways to express their thought through writing. Some people prefer to use a pen and write in a paper, while others choose to write on a computer, using keyboard as a tool. For me, I would rather to write on a computer for a specific writing, such as essays, short comments, e-mail. The reasons are: I found it easier to type as many word as I can without worrying that my handwriting will be bad, and there are some corrections in grammar also spelling while we write on a computer. However, I honestly don’t feel comfortable while staying in front of a computer screen in a very long time. Sometimes I choose using my handwriting while I want to write something that is a little bit complicated (making mindmap, using mathematic symbols, and so on). Overall, I think that both computer sand pen are playing an important role in writing, it depends on people’s preference.

The art of our writing down our thoughts can be traced back to over a period of 10,000 years, from a prehistoric antecedent to the present-day alphabet. Writing has always been an important part of our lives and it is becoming an increasingly critical part of our lives. But when discussing the medium in which we write in it has transformed, but the essence is still the same. Fast forwarding to our current era, the process of writing manually has gradually been reduced with the presence of the computer. With the computer , the way in which we write down our thoughts significantly changed. In terms of efficiency the time required to do write is reduced and the ability to overcome the mistakes we make is made possible. Personally I am a person who would like to take advantage of what is around and because of that I prefer to use the computer. And in the sense to say that by substituting between methods would affect our writing would be false in my opinion. After all it is how we craft our ideas creatively and properly that represents our writing.

  8. Writing and typing have their own attractions to different people based on what they do or what they are trying to accomplish. I personally feel that writing enables a work to feel more personal and is best for certain creative works such as writing scripts or drafts. This is because it feels less punishing when we have to add, remove or change an idea all while giving us the ability to add personal notations, such as writing quick little notes. Typing feels more fitting for works where hand writing may affect the end product greatly, such as writing up reports. At the same time, typing feels more formal than hand writing and so it fits better in terms of academic and scientific write ups. At the end of the day everyone has their own preference when it comes to how they do they work and as long as there isn't a set guideline, both methods work just fine.

  9. If pens and keyboards were a party, I guess I would choose the keyboards side since it provides easier access to do various things: adds words or a couple of sentence in the middle of a paragraph, deletion, and even tidiness of a paragraph (first of all, I don’t find my handwriting to be something I’m proud of—it is messy and I still can’t help it, and for that the computer serves us various kind of fonts, and eventually I become a fan of Times New Roman size 12 as it makes the writing to be more elegant and formal. Secondly, I like to justify the paragraph as it looks more neatly). Nonetheless when it comes to write down thoughts and the needs to scribble down ideas (especially when they are suddenly passing your mind and you’re afraid you might forget them), writing on the paper with a pen might be the best choice.

  10. Personally, I dont have spesific preference of using either pen or computer to write. I use pen or computer based on the need. When I have to write something that have to be shared with others, such as tasks, or essays, I used computer to write them down. I choose computer for this kind of tasks because computer is more mobile, practical, and neat than pen in these kind of cases, since we can just simply email it or print it to get the result. However, when I need to write something that is spontanious, fast, and doesn’t have to be neat, such as my ideas, notes from the class, and etc, I will use my pen. I choose pen for these kind of cases because pen will get me to explore more on what I write. I don’t know if this happens to all people or just me, but I feel that pen will get me more ideas to write and brings many ideas that will not come up if I just write and type on the computer itself. So, basically, pen and computer have their own benefit and deficiency. It depends on the people and the need to use whether pen or computer.

  11. In this era, everything revolves around technology. There are so many advantages of technology and the availability of computers as a tool for writing is one of the examples. For some people, their computers might have replaced pens and papers because they much prefer writing on the computer rather than using pens and papers. This is due to the benefits given by computers such as auto-correct, grammar check, spelling-check, and it also allows us to edit our writings easily. For instance, we can spice up our writings by changing the basic words with fancy words suggested by the computer. Furthermore, writing using computer can save up papers because papers are not needed if we don’t want the hard copy and like mentioned previously, computer enables us to edit our text easily so we do not need to scrap our writings hence less paper will go to waste and we can help save the environment.

    1. You can call me traditional but I still prefer writing with pens and papers rather than writing using computers. Although I admit that writing with computers would be much easier and perhaps faster, I personally find it difficult to remember the things I have typed and somehow the words that I wrote in papers tend to stick in my head better. Is there some kind of scientific explanation behind this or is it just me? I don’t know. But the activity of changing pens, highlighting my notes, jotting down words on papers, and flipping through pages help me remember information much more easily. Not just writing but also reading. I prefer reading from a hard copy rather than from computers although reading a hard copy could be a mission as some people’s handwritings are almost illegible (just like mine). I choose hard copy books over e-book because I feel like it gives me a sense of realness because I can touch it and flip through it whereas e-books I have to read from a flat screen display and scroll through the pages with a mouse which I personally find boring.

  12. Pen is an old tools use in writing, and computers are gadget that is use for everyday needs. By the era of globalization, pen is now combine with computers to create a tool that is use to take notes by the support of touch screen technology. A lot of people take notes using touchscreen gadget nowadays, in fact a lot of people still take notes using the manual process which is writing, including myself. I prefer to take notes manually because it makes us more understand of what we are writing and it makes us more remember the materials that we’re studying. Beside that, taking notes through gadget will be for me will make a lot of confused especially in arranging the paragraph and sentence. For people who are used to write in manual method, it is better for them because everything has its own positive and negative effect towards the notes that we wanted to write.

  13. In my opinion, there two kinds of people in technique chosen on writing, ones using pen and paper and the other is using keyboard and gadgets. Both have each ups and downs. During the national exam of senior high this year, which almost all posts used computers and gadgets to do the test, one thing caught my attention. It was not the ease of using keyboards to type faster or the screen that was easy to operate, but it was how the students reacted to the length of the test done in the Computer-Based-Test. Some of my friends enjoyed looking at these screens for long period of time. They believed it was much easier to look at screens rather than looking down on papers, turning it back and forth. Maybe they prefer to read things online or browse on their gadgets more often than those who don’t enjoy screens as much, or so I suppose. However, the rest of my friends who barely stand the hours of looking screens indeed rest or slept a minute or two during the test. They said it was done to rest their eyes and calm their mind after spending concentrations on the texts on the screens. Paper based test were their preference. I believe the same thing happens on writing. Some people are just naturally born to adapt faster with technology and take pleasure in enjoying those advanced instruments. Whilst some are still in preference of the traditional technique. I guess both are acceptable in the writing community, as long as the grammar, diction, and spelling are correct. It is just a matter of personal view.

  14. Well... after reading this article now I see why some people still consider to use pen and paper rather than typing wtih a computer. But in my opinion, I think it depends on people preferences and needs. For example, if you just wanna write some notes of course it will easier and more efficient to write on a paper than to type on a computer right?. And if you want to write an essay or a paperwork, well of course it will be easier to type. Well that is based on my opinion other people may different opinion. Another thing is that in the future maybe, just maybe pen and paper slowly will disappear as time goes by, because paper consumes a lot of trees to make and less trees means less oxygen and less carbondioxide catcher, resulting in holes on the ozone layer and global warming. So I am really sure that writing on a computer or a screen is the future of writing. - Dimas Aditya Permana

  15. In writing speed is important. Therefore, I want to add a comment on this article describing the importance of the speed. We used to have a pen and a sheet of paper on our table. Some of us might write quickly and some of us might not. But, when we talk about the speed of a hand-writing, no matter how fast you can write there will be someone who uses a keyboard and writes much faster than you. If you can finish a work faster, you will have more free time. More free time means more productive. You could do another work after you finish your current work. You can handle more work in a day if you have a speed.

Another interesting part is the auto-text which is available on some applications. I only need to write “trf”. And then, the system automatically writes the rest of the word which is “transfer”. It doesn’t stop at that. Some application can even correct your vocabulary. It prevents you from typing the wrong word. If you write “poblems”, the system will write “problems.” So, considering the benefits of the keyboard which are the speed and efficiency, typing a keyboard in front of a flat screen will help us more in our life.

  16. I was born on the year 2000 which was the time of vast technological changes, innovation and advancements. In the early years of my formal education, most kids are not exposed to computer. Learning process is facilitated through reading and conventional writing. On the other hand, my little sister was born in 2006. However, it is very much apparent that many changes has occurred during this 6 years gap. By the time my sister enroll to formal education, computer exposure is already very high. In general I do not prefer one method over the other. I however have different preference for different activities. I personally find it easier to study and revise school subject using the conventional way of writing. It’s an oddly satisfying feeling to be able to highlight, underline and write on paper despite all the mess that could happen. However, I do prefer computers for drawing and writing papers/essays as it is more time efficient. This preference that I have can be attributed to the way that I was nurtured and also the technological changes that occurred throughout my life.

  17. Long time ago, when I was a kid, there were still no computer or probably I just haven’t been taught to use a computer at that time. Since it was the time when “diary” was popular, the little me chose to write with a pen and a paper. But as the time goes by, technology changes rapidly, then I was getting used to type with the computer. I actually don’t really have a certain choice to write manually or type with the computer. Because at the end it turned out even if I have typed in Microsoft Word for a homework, I'd prefer to print it out to see whether I have been satisfied with the result or not. Also, it turned out that my typing speed is I can say above other people (well, people that I know), so it has some benefits. Another reason is I do enjoy typing because I enjoy playing piano, and somehow typing has a same feeling with playing piano.

  18. Pen is a traditional tool to write. Pen had been invented since a long time ago. In the old days, we can find pens with feather. It's an old style of pen. Now, we can find pen that we usually use in our daily life. But i think, if i have to choose between typing with keyboard or writting with a pen, i rather choose writting with a computer. The reason is, it's more efficient. Sometimes we need to work fast, and with keyboard, we can write much faster than using a pen. We will also feel exhausted if we write using a pen for a long time maybe an hour without stop or something. But, using keyboard we won't feel exhausted. I think, in the future, the existance of pen is questionable because the technology will be better and better. Scientist always try to find more highly intelegence technology, and maybe it will totally replace pen as a writting tool.

  19. After reading this article, i realize that both computer and paper pen have their own advantages and disadvantages. For me personally, i would definitely prefer on using computer to do my daily work such as reading and writing. First of all, i made this choice because i was born in the modern era and i’am raised with all the technology surrounded around me. In school, almost 80% percent of my homework and workshop done in electronic way. Therefore, i feel like the utilisation of technology has become a habit for me and it just one of those thing that cannot be separated from us. I respect people who prefer using paper pen, but if we are looking at the current reality of the modernisation in this era, i can assure you that most of the young generation would have the same answer as mine. Im not saying that paper pen is useless, its just that it doesn't follow and are not suitable for the lifestyle of the modern people.

  20. This article is quite interesting because we have been learning how to write, and have been using both pen and computer as a tool to write. Technological advancement have given people the simplicity of writing and even reading, since everyone started to use kindle or e-book for reading nowadays. The use of computer for writing is beneficial for the environment, because it would decrease the use of papers, hence controlling the environmental damage. But we should also consider that computers radiate lights, which is not safe for our eyes if we got exposed to it too much. Computer have a feature that corrects grammar or spelling automatically. This feature is beneficial but then it would make us too lazy to learn about grammar and spelling. People could become too dependent on the feature and won’t have decent language skills anymore. I believe we should not entirely forget writing with pen, despite the rapid grow of technology.

  21. Personally, I prefer to type in a computer rather than writing with a pen. Obviously, typing is way quicker and less complicated than writing on a piece of paper. Technology has made it very easy for us to write and edit anything, and also give us a choice whether to print out a hardcopy or just keep it in our computer. But then again, it really depends on the situation or what we are currently doing. Usually when it comes to essays, reviews, etc, I would choose - and I feel like most people would too - to type instead of writing it down on paper. It isn’t as tiring and it ensures that our work is neat and tidy. But when taking notes I prefer to write it down with a pen, since it helps me understand better about the notes. Also, I like to write down my notes in a way that’s easier for me to read or revise later on, and it’s either complicated to do it that way on my laptop or it’s not possible. So the point is pen and computer have their own advantages and flaws. It’s just up to each of us when and how we use it to achieve the best results.

  22. As I was going through this text, I realized how technology has changed my way of doing my homeworks. I am sitting on a plane, reading some articles on my phone and writing the comments in my google drive. When did this happened? I have always been a fan of writing every down, having every year a personal diary/agenda, using a lot of colors and drawing a small icon next to my appointments. Even for my homeworks and notes at the university, I prefered to have a notebook for every class and write everything down. However, to be honest, using just my phone and my laptop is more versatile. Technology has help me to be more organized and to have all my documents in the same “cloud”. I even realized that I can write faster in my laptop that in a sheet of paper which is more convenient for taking notes. On the other side, I do not like reading on my computer! I prefer to have everything print out and use a lot of different highlights, this help me concentrate better and be more efficient. Of course, it is important to recycle the paper after the semester has ended. :)

  23. The method of writing using pens or computer technologies has its advantages and disadvantages. When it comes to making summaries, I prefer using pens. Especially if I have a lot of time to make the summary. I can write it neatly with different kinds of colors so it looks more interesting. Writing manually also helps me to memorize even faster while writing the words. The disadvantage of manual handwriting is sometimes is doesn’t come out like you expect. Many mistakes make the paper look messy. The use of computer to write is effective when your making an essay. Especially essay that requires amount of words or fonts. With the use of computer, we can think faster, and we can just immediately erase mistakes that we have made. I don’t really like making summaries using computer because sometimes we just type something we don’t understand, making it less efficient to memorize materials. In conclusion, manual handwriting and computer writing has its uses.

  24. I personally have no particular preference because both typing and writing are basically the same. I use both of them most of the times depends on what kind of writing I will make. Paper and pen are small, so I can always carry them anywhere easily. Sometimes, when I have some ideas for my writing, I will write it first in papers using pen or sometimes pencil. Beside that, I use my phone to do some little research regarding to my writing. But I tend to have bad handwriting because if I don't put my ideas in the paper fastly, the ideas will be gone. And for the reason I use the computer is when I want my writing to have some aesthetic view. So I can enjoy reading it again and again when I correct or add something to the writing. There's the downside too, of course. While using computers, my eyes tend to get sore if I use it for such a time. Also, there are many distractions from the contents of the computer itself that sometimes are more interesting than my own writing. That's why each of the ways has their own good and bad side for me personally.

  25. Personally, I would prefer writing compared to typing. Even though typing seems to be easier and faster but, I find writing more reliable especially, when it comes to studying for a test. When you write, slowly, you will start to remember the things that you write which will be very useful when your test is 80% memorized material. On the other hand, you will rather type compared to writing when it comes to making 2 pages of essay. Technology is created to help us and make our life easier, providing a more efficient way for us to finish our job. Again, it’s according to your needs. Some might think typing is better than writing, some might think writing is better than typing others might think, others might think there is no difference between writing and typing. After all, it’s not about the device but, it is about the content of our writing. There will be no plus or minus points when you submit a written nor a typed work. But, there will be a plus point when you submit a work filled with fully thought ideas.

  26. The existence of a computer has made the writing industries made easier because of the invention of typing that helps people save their time. Through the years, people are starting to prefer typing rather than writing. I personally disagree because I prefer writing. Why is that? The answer is simply because by writing I could have more sense of basic human skills. The actions in writing could easily make me aware and also remember on what I was thinking in my writing. When I was given the task to type something, like for example this English writing skills assignment, I usually write the draft first in a piece of paper, then I type it on a computer. This helps me so that I can fully remember on what’s on my mind when I wrote the assignment. The benefits of typing for me is that it tells you how many words that you have written and also corrects wrong spelling. That is all.

  27. This article brings up many good (and bad) points about each platform of writing. Writing on pen and paper allows writers to write down all of the ideas and allows them and gets them ‘in the zone’, to write the ideas in their head until either they’ve written it all down on paper or their arm gives out. Writing on paper also gives you the ability to memorize what you are writing down, which makes some people argue it’s better way to take notes in class. But for some people who write slowly and aren’t capable of multitasking listening to the lecture and writing (like myself), it’s difficult for them. Typing gives a great advantage for people like me, because typing requires less concentration and to record what the professor is saying at a faster rate. Typing on the computer might also benefit to those who find themselves still struggling with their language and may find the auto correct feature very helpful. But working on the computer is a tempting little thing, with all the other cool features that also exists on it and all. People might get distracted and procrastinate their assignment until last minute, unlike writing on pen and paper. The two writing platforms have their own benefits in their own way, and in the end it is completely up to the individual’s preferences to decide which features fulfills their needs the most.

  28. Some people like to type rather than write using pen and paper, and vice versa. Personally, I enjoy both, depending on the situation. If I’m going to write simple notes with symbols like arrows or tables, I prefer using pen and paper. Sure we can apply those symbols using our laptop, but for me, it would be more complicated than by hand. However, if I’m planning to write a long essay writing with a number of paragraphs, I’d like to use my computer, since it enables us to record our work in a faster and simpler way. Furthermore, personally, writing long essays manually is very tiring, which eventually makes my handwriting becomes very bad and unreadable. On the other side, I prefer to read long essays in a hard copy rather than on screen. Reading long essays in a hard copy is easier since we can add notes and highlights the important words easily, instead of reading on a screen which can be tiring for me.

  29. In comparison with typing in computers or tablets or smartphones, I prefer to write in a conventional way using pen and papers. I chose writing over typing since it’s faster and cheaper and compared with typing which requires at least a proper smartphone which’s much more expensive compared with a sheet of paper and a pen. Also, I prefer to write since I felt more comfortable to write in paper and a pen as well as I can directly pour my ideas to the paper without looking at the screen which’s tiring for both my eyes and it’s much more tiring compared with writing on a paper. Besides, writing which’ve been an essential since when I was a pre-schooler while typing was taught to me far after I’m able to write properly. In the end, both’re necessary since we don’t know when we’re required to write and when are we required to type. Which kind of forcing us to master both or at least able to be equally good at both typing and writing.

  30. First of all, writing has long been one of my hobbies. I was introduced to English writing when I was in the fourth grade. Back then, I thought that writing was quite a difficult thing to do and so tedious. Because at that time, I couldn’t type in a computer very well and mistakes was so inevitable, thus writing with a pen and paper was my only choice. It is only after I joined digital writing class at my school was I able to type fast in a computer. However, after a few months in that class, I realized that it is quite a task to express my opinions and ideas that I have when composing with computer technology. Yes, I do agree that composing with computer is much more efficient, as it takes just seconds to erase some mistakes made when writing. And also, computer spell checks are very helpful for beginners who just started writing. But, I believe that a writing depicts someone’s personality. And in my opinion, the most important thing about writing is the content itself. If typing in a computer degrades someone’s creativity and ideas in expressing what is in his mind into writings, the extra speed that is given from typing would be nothing. Well, that’s my opinion. After all, I think it is a personal preference whether to compose with a pen or computer.

  31. This article makes us consider if writing with pen and paper is still comparable to writing with a computer. I, personally, prefer writing with a computer, when given the chance. This is partly due to the fact that I have the tendency to want to take notes as fast as I can, and I have horrible handwriting, sometimes to the point of no longer being readable. But I don't have a computer all the time, not one with an actual keyboard which prevent us from making annoyingly frequent typos. So I tend to use good old pen and paper in an everyday classroom situation. Given the choice, I prefer to complete writing assignments with a computer rather than it being handwritten. But given the time, I can complete an assignment which requires handwritten paragraphs and various other elements which will be complicated if attempted by a computer. For now though, I’ll settle for a standard pen and paper.

  32. If I have to choose between typing in computer or writing using a pen and paper, I will definitely choose typing in computer. The reason why is because typing in computer is less tiring for me. you can just delete something with a button if something went wrong. But using a pen, you have to use an eraser or corrector to delete it. But I can't say that i'm totally into typing. The reason why is because sometimes you just want to write something and you want to write it in your own way and the only way to do that is to write it using a pen. You can draw anything you want and express the message your own way. Especially when you want to summarize something. Sometimes it is better to just write it down using a pen instead of using your computer or notebook. Therefore, i'll say that I enjoy both typing in computer and writing with pen.

  33. Since I was child, I was only taught by my parents to write, as we didn’t have a computer on those days. At those days also, we only use paper and pen to do and write an assignment or other papers. I started to learn typing when I was 10 years old. My parents bought me a laptop, and started to teach me how to type. Typed assignment was first given to me when I was in Junior High School. That’s the first time I effectively use my laptop to work on assignments. Personally, I prefer typing rather than writing. It consumes less time than writing, and also typing is more convenient for me. Writing consumes more time, as we have to write the assignments with a neat writings. Typing also have the minus side, which is our eyes are getting tired of looking at the monitor of our laptops or desktops, and our neck is also getting tired as the time goes by. Also, these days the technologies are getting better, and mainly the works and assignments, are asked to be typed and printed.

  34. Since computer was invented in 1936, the use of pen has been reduced little by little with the years goes by. When computer was invented, people felt the easiness, practicalness, and simplicity that computer brought into their life. We can not deny that computer definitely is easier to use, easier to be shared with others and also neater in looking. But, we can not also deny that computer and pen have their own specialness and function. When we want to draw, or explore our ideas through some mindmaps or writings, pen will be more useful since it follows where our hand want to be. Pen will be a better tool to create something that is more personal, since it is written by our hands and will give our result more meaning since it is crafted by our own hands. Meanwhile, computer will be a better tool to create something that is professional, for example, tasks, essays, that needs to be shared with others. In conclusion, pen and computer has their own function and it is our own choice whether to use pen or computer.

  35. I find it easier to type on a computer rather than writing on a piece of paper. When using a computer, it is very easy to delete it and it is also not as tiring as writing using a pen on a paper. Also, using a pen on a device is also better than using real pen because we do not have to use a lot of force when writing using a pen on a device. Also, I have a bad handwriting. Using a digital method will really help me out. Putting pictures on our work will also be easier and we do not have to scan things when we need to send it by mail. Even though it will be heavier as oppose to a paper, I will still use it if my work can be neater than the one on a paper. I can also think more clearly in front of a screen. This Is because on a screen I can try to write many things and erase it just like I mentioned.

  36. Using a computer has it own advantages, not to forget people nowadays are used in using technology. Especially to write something it is convenient to use computer because of its advantages. First of all, everything that you write is stored digitally as opposed to an analog system. If you want to write long paragraph there’s no need to waste paper and pen ink because by using computer it can be extremely long and, because they're virtual, storage space is virtually unlimited. This also makes computers more environmentally friendly, as they don't waste paper. Other advantages is that when it comes to page alterations, anything can be deleted and altered, whether it a single word, phrase or letter. Also by using computer you don’t have to worry about your paper getting wet or ripped and etc. In my opinion, if I have to choose between writing on a paper and using a computer I will definitely choose writing using computer.

  37. Pen or computer, it all really depends on the situation. I personally would choose to type on a computer for most things, where else a pen slightly feels more of something old-school. I still remember back in primary school when we all wrote with pencils. We were taught joint-handwriting, or in other words, cursive writing. It showed me the beauty and art in writing, and on top of that, it helps you write much faster when you do it in cursive. Getting closer to the end of primary school, some of us received a ‘pen license’, which means we earned the privilege to write in pen as it gives us a sense of growing up.
Computers on the other hand, offers a good extent of accuracy and consistency. In the third grade, I was already able to type without looking at the keyboard while averaging 70 words per minute. As I grew up, I enjoyed typing despite not having any interest in writing, it may perhaps be because I’m not a creative person. My typing skills vastly improved, averaging out 110 words per minute to this date. Ironically, I use this skill to transform/type up handwritten writings into computer texts.

  38. In my high school years, I rarely use my laptop for schoolworks. Most of the time, our works had to be handwritten. I predict that I will be using more of my laptop in my undergraduate years now, and I already feel that I'm using more of it than I was at high school for the past month. Before my study at university, I used to take notes from teachers, and study from my notes and textbooks, so I rarely use my laptop. I just realised that it is much more convenient browsing through the internet with a laptop than a phone. Though I still prefer to print out a hardcopy to read long texts of words than reading it through a screen. And for subjects like maths, I find it easier to write mathematical equations manually with a pen and paper, as I can't input mathematical symbols fast enough on a laptop. But for normal writing works without the worry of putting mathematical symbols like commenting on this blog is much more convenient using a laptop.

  39. First of all, my handwriting is terrible, so writing a long essay in a paper will result in a chaotic handwriting, because I will get tired and bored of writing. Having a laptop or a desktop as your daily facility of writing is very helpful. As a new student in college, I realized what is the importance of having a computer, because almost every task must be done with the help of a computer. By having a computer, also help us with writing, especially with the editing process of writing. To be honest, I do not really like writing, especially writing with paper and pen, but with having a computer, really encourage me to write more and more, because I think it is really easy to write with a computer. So in my opinion, people who do not really like writing should try writing with a computer, because it is so much more fun than writing with a pen and paper.

  40. This article made me know the reason of why people prefer to use pen or more advance technology in writing. We all know that we are living in digital era where we can’t be separated from technology in our daily life. Most of us prefer to use advance technology to help our everyday task including writing something. Every writers have their own preference in writings. Most of the writers nowadays prefer typing rather than writing manually because it is much easier, faster, and more efficient. Still, there are also a lot of writers out there that prefers writing manually. For me personally, I don’t have any preference. The method I write depends on my mood and the equipment that available near me. Sometimes I write with pen because I feel like I could memorize easily by writing it manually by myself and I can write the way I want. On the other hand, I also choose to type because it is much faster, efficient, and more neater.

  41. Using a laptop to write, or should I say type, is much more convenient that writing on a piece of paper with a pen, you can write faster and clearer, you can save it easily and share it in an incredible fast way to many people, you can save it on your computer or on a cloud to make it easier to find back, and have access to it everywhere and not scare of losing it like a physical paper, but I still enjoy writing with a pen on a sheet of paper, I think computer are better for professional work or administrative matter, but when I take notes from lecture for example I still prefer hand writing as it’s easier to remember after, when I type on my computer I don’t really pay attention to what I am writing but when I am using a pen I am more focus on what I am actually writing, so I think hand writing will always exist and people will always enjoy doing it, despite the convenience of just typing.

  42. Just out of curiosity, anyone felt that their handwritings got worse and worse? I do. And I thnk that’s partly because these days, I typed more than I write. Personally, I love to write. This recently discovered as I went to college. But, i don’t want to deal with the fact that I need to erase every single thing that I had written when it’s wrong with an eraser. Especially, when these days a lot of teacher demanded that their student write with a pen. Using a lot of tape on your handwritten assignment will make it look bad, and will discouraged yor teacher to even read since there are so many corrections to begin with. So, passing up on computer is more or less a stupid move for me. But as time goes on, I felt like my handwriting isn’t as good as it used to be. I don’t know if this is because I type more than I write? Or just because my handwriting is just bad in general? I’m interested if someone has the same problem as I am.

  43. Pen and computer were two absolute different technologies that appeared in a different era. Yet everyone admit that both of them are very crucial in our daily activities. So actually there shouldn’t be any huge comparison between the two, because every people use them based on their preferences. People in the past mostly use pen because computer has not been invited yet, and people now more prefer to use computer to write because surely it is way more easier and faster. Even some people would prefer to combine them both. Like those editors that typed their text in the computer but then start to edit the text in a hard copy (printed) and do some revisions with their magic pen. Therefore, these two technology should not be separated since they have huge impact on people’s life. However, nowadays, innovation were encourage people to be able to use both pen and computer at the same time. Like tabs with pen, like phone with it’s pen, and even touch-screen computer that also supported with its pen. So now they are no longer differ from each other, but they are now support each other.

  44. From my experience, I prefer to type on a laptop or computer than writing with a pen. Because typing is much more efficient, which means it is quicker and easier to use than writing on paper. Innovation has made it simple for us to write and edit anything we want. Technology give us a decision whether to keep a document on our computer or laptop or to print out a hardcopy using a printer. But it is also relies upon the circumstance or the situation that we currently are in. When it comes to writing an essay, a review, and so on, I prefer to type on a laptop or a computer than writing on a piece of paper. I believe most of the students in IUP FEB UGM are more convenient to write an essay on a laptop. To type on a laptop is not as tiring as we write on a piece of paper. I think that typing on a laptop is also for affective and efficient. Because we can easily erase the words on a laptop, while in paper we have to use a type-x to erase. I also think that typing on a laptop is much more tidy and neat than writing on a piece of paper. But on the other hand, I prefer to write notes on a piece of paper than type the notes on a laptop. I prefer to write the notes because it is more easy for me and, in a way, it helps me to understand more. And as a student in FEB UGM, some of the lecturers wouldn’t let the students to open their laptop to take notes. I think that the lecturers are afraid that the students will use the laptop to play games and such. From my understanding, pen and computer or laptop have their own disadvantages and advantages. It really relies upon the more suitable one for some situation.

  45. Pen and computer have its own advantages. I still prefer choose pen for taking notes, because it is easier for me to look back some material and I feel more comfortable reading on paper. I find my way to study by summarizing the materials and by writing it with pen make me memorize the materials easier. But if I write or type it with computer, I still need to print it out. It is a bit tiring to concentrate and read long texts on computer. The disadvantage by writing with pen, if we make a mistake it will be there forever even if we use correction pen it’s still there. But if we use computer, there will not be any problem about that. I prefer to use computer for making paper or other school works, it is easier to browse the topic and correct my mistakes. It will be faster to type it than write it with pen and paper, also we can print another copy if we lost our works.

  46. I think both typing and writing has the same function that is to write something on a paper either it is a handwriting or computerized-writing. What makes it different is the tool that we use. I personally think that typing is way more efficient in many aspects so I would prefer typing other than writing it with a pen manually. First of all, we do not have to waste any more trees which is cut to make a piece of paper, so we can use less paper and save more trees if we prefer to use computer and type when we writer something. Besides, by typing we can be much faster in producing something written compared to write it with a pen by our hand. Imagine if I have to write every comment from Mr. Adrian’s task by my own hand, 150 words for four comments which means I have to write 600 words every week. I believe it will take more time than type it in my computer.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Another advantage from typing is that once I make some mistakes in writing like I make a typo or I change my mind about what I’m going to write for instance, I only have to delete it easily and quickly by pressing the “delete” button, but if I write it on hand, I have to erase it with correction pen or eraser or even change my paper and replace it with the new one and I have to repeat the writing right from the start. It will not be as efficient as typing I guess. One more advantage of typing is that it will look more tidy and easier to be read compared to writing. Because I believe not everyone was born is having such a good and easy-to-be-read handwriting, so I think it will be a good solution for those who does not have such a very good handwriting. I also have this thing in my mind that in this digital era, it would be better if we just utilize maximally the presence of sophisticated technology by using computer to type instead of writing it by hand manually.

  48. When I first started at Universitas Gadjah Mada, I noticed that people had to make their assignments handwritten, something I hadn’t done for the last decade. I am a big supporter on doing work on a laptop or other digital multimedia. They make writing easier and better, it can check your spelling and writes in straight lines. You can also write much faster on a computer, which enables you to use your time more efficient. I hope that one day UGM will also understand that making your work handwritten on a paper is no longer of this time. It costs the students more time to make it and the lecturers more time to correct it. As a comparison, in my high school we weren’t even allowed to make our homework handwritten, since it gave the teachers difficulties for correcting it. I think pen should only been used when someone writes a love letter.
