Ane Brun
"These Days"
There were nights and mornings
When you clung to me
Found your way into my bones, my joints
Into my veins
Like an animal you coiled your darkness around me
You spelled your name in charcoal
All over my body
But these days
I just walk with you
These days
I let you stay
A little further away
But I walk with you
These days
I'll let you stay
There were summer days and nights
When I was blind to you
You were quiet and you were still
Even when the moon was full
My temporary state of lightness would scare me
After all you were more strong then,
I was daring
I was daring
But these days
I just walk with you
These days
I let you stay
These days
I just talk with you
These days
I let you stay
A little further away
But I walk with you
These days
I let you stay
The things you've shown me over the years
The roads you blocked and how you'll define me
These days
I just walk with you
These days
I let you stay
These days
I just talk with you
These days, these days
Is she talking about her boyfriend/partner/husband?
Or is she talking about part of herself - her own dark side - or depression?

The Verve
"Bittersweet Symphony"
'Cause it's a bittersweet symphony, this life
Try to make ends meet
You're a slave to money then you die
I'll take you down the only road I've ever been down
You know the one that takes you to the places
where all the veins meet yeah,
No change, I can change
I can change, I can change
But I'm here in my mold
I am here in my mold
But I'm a million different people
from one day to the next
I can't change my mold
No, no, no, no, no
Well I never pray
But tonight I'm on my knees yeah
I need to hear some sounds that recognize the pain in me, yeah
I let the melody shine, let it cleanse my mind, I feel free now
But the airways are clean and there's nobody singing to me now
No change, I can change
I can change, I can change
But I'm here in my mold
I am here in my mold
And I'm a million different people
from one day to the next
I can't change my mold
No, no, no, no, no
I can't change
I can't change
'Cause it's a bittersweet symphony, this life
Try to make ends meet
Try to find some money then you die
I'll take you down the only road I've ever been down
You know the one that takes you to the places
where all the things meet yeah
You know I can change, I can change
I can change, I can change
But I'm here in my mold
I am here in my mold
And I'm a million different people
from one day to the next
I can't change my mold
No, no, no, no, no
I can't change my mold
no, no, no, no, no,
I can't change
Can't change my body,
no, no, no
I'll take you down the only road I've ever been down
I'll take you down the only road I've ever been down
Been down
Ever been down
Ever been down
Ever been down
Ever been down
Have you ever been down?
Have you've ever been down?

"Don't Dream It's Over"
(Crowded House cover)
There is freedom within
there is freedom without
Try to catch a deluge in a paper cup
There's a battle ahead
many battles are lost
But you'll never see the end of the road
While you're traveling with me
[CHORUS]
Hey now, hey now
Don't dream it's over
Hey now, hey now
When the world comes in
They come, they come
To build a wall between us
We know they won't win
Now I'm towing my car
there's a hole in the roof
my possessions are causing me suspicion but there's no proof
in the paper today
tales of war and of waste
but you turn right over to the T.V. page
[CHORUS]
Hey now, hey now
Don't dream it's over
Hey now, hey now
When the world comes in
They come, they come
To build a wall between us
We know they won't win
Now I'm walking again
to the beat of a drum
And I'm counting the steps to the door of your heart
Only shadows ahead
barely clearing the roof
Get to know the feeling of liberation and relief
Hey now, Hey now
Don't dream it's over
Hey now, Hey now
When the world comes in
They come, they come
To build a wall between us
You know they won't win
Don't let them win
Hey now, Hey now
Hey now, Hey now
Hey now, Hey now
Don't let them win
They come, They come
Don't let them win
Hey now, Hey now (yeah)

"Brown Paper Bag"
Step to the rhythm made out of brown paper, sounds entering of a different nature,
Rhythms get greater, And the rhythms they get greater, Yes another rough-a-tough
Four for the chaser, New configuration, New riff and New Structure
Built on the frame that'll hold the room puncture, Tight
We wrap it up, it's wrapped, tightly.
Mmmmmmmmmmmm
It lives, The bass is the army that it gives.
When we apply the breaks, There'll be no skids.
Just more elements to continue as we glide.
Dimensions & The Measurements and the evidence you will find
Change it, rearrange it so its regularly updated
Hits from every angle so expected the un-expected
Represent the fusion of the mind and stay connected
The star that is presenting, The size of the markers been indented
Delivering the style we give you so that means a mention
In your direction is the baron that we aimed, ascension
Instead the way the floor the stunner made a we invention
And then you get your moneys worth before you've even sensed it
Make you think a four figure for the whole nation
Send it down so one we know it with no discrimination
Like a safe with 50 locks, as many combination
No matter which way that you turn you reach the same destination.
The fullness of the spectrum, 360 keep it circling
Deep inside the flow is where its working it
Under lease, submerging it, time to make it go deeper
Way past the point that blows holes in your speaker
Under and over, take it over and under
First you get the lightning and then you get the thunder
The sound is the music and the music is the feature
Mmmmmmmmmmmm
Step to the rhythm made out of brown paper, sounds entering of a different nature,
Rhythms get greater, And the rhythms they get greater, Yes another rough-a-tough
Four for the chaser, New configuration, New riff and New Structure
Built on the frame that'll hold the room puncture, Tight
We wrap it up, it's wrapped, tightly.
Mmmmmmmmmmmm
Step step step step step step step step step step
Paper paper paper paper paper
Step step step step step step step step step step
P-P-Paper paper paper paper paper
Mmmmmmmmmmmm
Step step step step step step step step step step
Step to the rhythm made out of brown paper

The monotonic tune “Bitter Sweet Symphony” by The Verve is probably one of the most iconic Britpop songs to ever exist. I reckon most people could easily recognise its repetitive violin being played throughout the song. It turns out that the violin part was actually sampled from “The Last Time“ by The Andrew Oldham Orchestra, a musical project by The Rolling Stones’ manager Andrew Oldham. The Verve were subject to lawsuit not long after “Bitter Sweet Symphony“ was released. Honestly, I am not a fan of the song, but I can say that due to the song being overplayed ever since I was young, the bittersweet symphonic vibes (pun intended) of the song lingers in my mind every time I listen to it wherever it is. The song blossomed in the era where one-hit wonders were exploding, so it is in the same spectrum as the likes of Natalia Imbruglia’s “Torn”, The Cardigans’ “Lovefool“, and Fools Garden’s “Lemon Tree“

I really enjoyed the first song, “These Days” by Anne Brun. It has an amazing melody. The lyrics have a really deep meaning, but honestly, I do not care about what the singer’s talking about. I just enjoy the song, know the lyrics and interpret it by myself. I mean, I believe that every meaning of a song is different based on who listening to it. After I read the whole lyrics and try to understand it, I think she’s talking about depression or other mental illness. “Like an animal you coiled your darkness around me,” those lyrics strengthen my point of view that she is talking about it. The mental illness came all of sudden and controls her. Sometimes, she can control and walk with the illness, but sometimes she can’t. The illness controls her perfectly. I do not know if it is true or not, but that is what I interpret after understanding the lyrics.
ReplyDeleteIn my point of view, the last song, “Brown Paper Bag” by Roni Size / Reprazent has a really interesting and unique music video. This song is in an album called “New Forms”. New Forms is the debut album by the drum and bass act Roni Size / Reprazent. It was released on 23 June 1997. The double-disc set was the winner of the Mercury Prize in 1997, and often cited as their magnum opus. The album was released in various formats with slightly different track lists. In the UK, there was a 2CD version and a single disc edition, and the vinyl was released in both 4LP and 5LP versions. New Forms entered the UK Albums Chart during the week ending 5 July 1997 and peaked at number 8. In the US, only the 2CD version was released, though this contained the bonus track of "Electricks". The album went on to be re-recorded as New Forms² in 2008.

In this sixth article about songs, I would like to express my interpretation on Don’t dream, it’s over song covered by Amanda Ashley Law. I think this woman has a unique voice and I love it. She has a charisma to make this song feel comfortable to hear including the guitar instrument that she played, she can balance it well. All the notes are in the right place and they use good dynamics, where should they give a tension on some notes are right. However, the singer can deliver this song quite well, they can express a suitable feeling from that song. For the music, I think this pop song tell about the third person in their relationship who want to break their connection. The progression chord and block chord is quite easy to get. It played on F and for each parts using 1-3m-4-3 progression chords, for the reff use 4-5-1-6m progression chords.
ReplyDeleteI first hear “Don’t Dream It’s Over” from a TV series, Glee. By reading the lyrics, I think that this song tells you that even though your relationship with your significant other has a lot of obstacles, you should keep holding on and keep moving forward. I personally love the song and the meaning as well. The second song that I like is “Bittersweet Symphony” by The Verve. Not just the music, but the music video also interests me and it’s not like any other music video. Both the music and the music video were nominated for an award. I don’t think a lot of people know this song because it’s not that mainstream. But I still like it anyway. However, I didn’t know the other two songs. But after listening to both of them, I really like “These Days” by Ane Brun. But on the other side, “Brown Paper Bag” has a very interesting music video. I think that each song has its own uniqueness.
ReplyDeleteOut of all the songs mentioned in this article, I am only familiar with one song which is “Don’t Dream it’s Over”. There are so many different versions of this song. I first listened to this song because of Ariana Grande and Miley Cyrus’s cover on youtube. And then I listened to Sixpence None the Richer’s version. I never actually heard the actual version by Crowded House, nor Amanda Ashley Law’s cover. But I really love the lyrics and melody of the song. When I looked it up, it is explained that this song is encouraging us to stand by our dreams as well as being there for each other. Though I read somewhere else that when the writer of this song Neil Finn wrote this, he didn’t really remember the exact context. He thinks it was just about feeling lost, but on the other hand thinking “Don’t dream it’s over”. Even though the writer didn’t really think too much about this song, it is Crowded House’s biggest hit in the US
