Four Songs No.4

Alanis Morissette
"You Oughta Know"

I want you to know, that I'm happy for you
I wish nothing but the best for you both
An older version of me
Is she perverted like me
Would she go down on you in a theatre
Does she speak eloquently
And would she have your baby
I'm sure she'd make a really excellent mother

'cause the love that you gave that we made wasn't able
To make it enough for you to be open wide, no
And every time you speak her name
Does she know how you told me you'd hold me
Until you died, till you died
But you're still alive

And I'm here to remind you
Of the mess you left when you went away
It's not fair to deny me
Of the cross I bear that you gave to me
You, you, you oughta know

You seem very well, things look peaceful
I'm not quite as well, I thought you should know
Did you forget about me Mr. Duplicity
I hate to bug you in the middle of dinner
It was a slap in the face how quickly I was replaced
Are you thinking of me when you're with her?

'cause the love that you gave that we made wasn't able
To make it enough for you to be open wide, no
And every time you speak her name
Does she know how you told me you'd hold me
Until you died, til you died
But you're still alive

And I'm here to remind you
Of the mess you left when you went away
It's not fair to deny me
Of the cross I bear that you gave to me
You, you, you oughta know

'cause the joke that you laid on the bed that was me
And I'm not gonna fade
As soon as you close your eyes and you know it
And every time I scratch my nails down someone else's back
I hope you feel it...well can you feel it

Well, I'm here to remind you
Of the mess you left when you went away
It's not fair to deny me
Of the cross I bear that you gave to me
You, you, you oughta know

XTC
"The Mayor of Simpleton"

Never been near a university,
Never took a paper or a learned degree,
And some of your friends think that's stupid of me,
But it's nothing that I care about.

Well I don't know how to tell the weight of the sun,
And of mathematics well I want none,
And I may be the Mayor of Simpleton,
But I know one thing,
And that's I love you.
When their logic grows cold and all thinking gets done,
You'll be warm in the arms of the Mayor of Simpleton.

I can't have been there when brains were handed round
(please be upstanding for the Mayor of Simpleton),
Or get past the cover of your books profound,
(please be upstanding for the Mayor of Simpleton),
And some of your friends thinks it's really unsound,
That you're ever seen talking to me.

Well I don't know how to write a big hit song,
And all crossword puzzles well I just shun,
And I may be the Mayor of Simpleton,
But I know one thing,
And that's I love you.

I'm not proud of the fact that I never learned much,
Just feel I should say,
what you get is all real,
I can't put on an act,
It takes brains to do that anyway. (And anyway...)

And I can't unravel riddles, problems and puns,
How the home computer has me on the run,
And I may be the Mayor of Simpleton,
But I know one thing,
And that's I love you (I love you).

If depth of feeling is a currency,
(please be upstanding for the Mayor of Simpleton),
Then I'm the man who grew the money tree,
(no Chain of Office and no hope of getting one).
Some of your friends are too brainy to see,
That they're paupers and that's how they'll stay.

Well I don't know how many pounds make up a ton,
Of all the Nobel prizes that I've never won,
And I may be the Mayor of Simpleton,
But I know one thing,
And that's I love you.

When all logic grows cold and all thinking gets done,
You'll be warm in the arms of the Mayor of Simpleton.
You'll be warm in the arms of the Mayor of Simpleton.
You'll be warm in the arms of the Mayor.
(Please be upstanding for the Mayor of Simpleton.)

Rickie Lee Jones
"Chuck E's In Love"

How come he don't come and p.l.p. with me
Down at the meter no more?
How come he turn off the TV
And he hang that sign on the door?
We call and we call "How come?" we say
What could make a boy behave this way?

He learn all of the lines, and every time he
don't stutter when he talk
And it's true! It's true! He sure is acquired a
cool and inspired sorta jazz when he walk
Where's his jacket and his old blue jeans?
If this ain't healthy is it some kinda clean?

I think that Chuck E's in love
Chuck E's in love

I don't believe what you're saying to me
This is something I gotta see Is he here?
Look in the poolhall Is he here?
Look in the drugstore Is he here?
No, he don't come here no more

I'll tell you what I saw him
He was sittin' behind us down at the Pantages
And whatever it is that he's got up his sleeve
I hope it isn't contagious
What's her name? Is that her there?
Christ, I think he's even combed his hair!

Is that her? What's her name?
Oh, it's never going to be same.
But that's not her
I know what's wrong--
Chuck E's in love with the little girl who's singing this song

Chuck E's in love
Chuck E's in love with me.

Radiohead
"Burn The Witch"

Stay in the shadows
Cheer at the gallows
This is a round up

This is a low flying panic attack
Sing a song on the jukebox that goes

Burn the witch
Burn the witch
We know where you live

Red crosses on wooden doors
And if you float you burn
Loose talk around tables
Abandon all reason
Avoid all eye contact
Do not react
Shoot the messengers

This is a low flying panic attack
Sing the song of sixpence that goes

Burn the witch
Burn the witch
We know where you live
We know where you live

  1. Well, In this fourth article about songs, I would like to review “You Oughta Know” song by Alanis Morisette. You Oughta Know is an alternative rock song written by Alanis Morisette and Glen Ballard. In this case, Glen Ballard is also the producers of this recording. This was an old song which produced in 1995 in Canada. Alanis Morisette is a Canadian-American singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, record producer, and actress. She was known as emotive mezzo-soprano voice and began her career in Canada in the early 1990s with two mildly successful dance-pop albums. Afterward, as part of a recording deal, she moved to Holmby Hills, Los Angeles and in 1995 released Jagged Little Pill, a more rock-oriented album which sold more than 33 million copies globally and is her most critically acclaimed work. This song is an angry message from a scorned ex-girlfriend directed at her former lover. Morissette has said it is about a specific person, but that person has not contacted her and probably doesn't know it's about him. The song was rumored to be about the actor Dave Coulier, who Morissette dated for a time - Coulier says it was in 1992 when Alanis would have been 17 or 18 years old and he would have been 32 or 33 (hence the line "an older version of me"). Coulier played Joey on the TV show Full House and is known for his Bullwinkle impression.

    1. Deo, nicely researched and put together. Now we know you can do that, the next time there is a song that catches your ear, let me see your personal reaction to the words and music.

  2. Radiohead’s “Burn The Witch” talks about the fabrication of media content for the audiences to distract themselves from the apparent oppression in modern society that is being enforced by media owners. People are being channelled to conform to the values that the society has, which made people that hold different views from the majority being deemed as outcasts, being allegorised as “witches”. “Witches” with rebellious thoughts are being “burned” to the ground due to the insecurities of the media moguls of the influences that the “witches“ could bring to the media consumers. The “witches” are being labelled as a potential cause to a moral panic within the society, just because they take different stance from the rest of people. “Abandon all reason, do not react, shoot the messengers.” These lyrics suggest that the media will not have any qualms to eliminate the “witches“ to keep the audiences in believing the media’s version of truth.

    1. Raul, do you think the combination of words, music and video is 'successful' in achieving the emotional or even 'political' reaction it's seeking to achieve? Does it work for you?

    2. Brilliant take, Raul! Your comment candidly explains how the lyrics of the song draw parallels to the social control evident in today's world of mass media and how it is an example of the degree of social critique that is a staple of Radiohead's music. I would like to add some important ideas contained in the song that were not mentioned in your comment, such as how the song illustrates the human tendency of subscribing to a mob mentality and exemplifying it through the imagery of the 17th century Salem witch trials. The imagery evoked by the phrases "Cheer at the gallows", and "Red crosses on wooden doors" is an obvious reference to the Salem witch trials of 1693, wherein 19 people were accused, and executed, for allegedly being witches. To this day, the Salem witch trials is still the most commonly used example for how mass hysteria and mob mentality could remove the reasoning of entire communities, and push them into doing things that are otherwise unacceptable to rational human minds.

  3. The first song is kind of fun! I would love to do some research about the first song,"You Oughta Know" by Alanis Morissette. "You Oughta Know" is a song by Canadian-American singer Alanis Morissette, released as the lead single from her third studio album, Jagged Little Pill (1995) on July 7, 1995. This song was added to the tour's video album Jagged Little Pill Live (1997). Since then, the song has been included in her albums MTV Unplugged (1999),Feast on Scraps (2002), and The Collection, as well as 1997 Grammys and the MTV Unplugged compilation albums. The music video for the track was filmed in the Mojave Desert and directed by Nick Egan. Throughout the video, Morissette switches from a short black dress to a white tank-top and coat, to a blue silk shirt in the climax - all signifying her change in image. Honestly, I’m not a fan of the music video. In my point of view, the music video failed to explain the meaning of the song, sorry Nick Egan.

  4. Whoa, the fourth one, “Burn The Witch” by Radiohead, got my attention. I mean, look how amazing the music video is. It’s really unique and eye-catching. "Burn the Witch" is a song by the English rock band Radiohead, released on 3 May 2016 as the lead single from their ninth studio album A Moon Shaped Pool (2016). The "Burn the Witch" music video was directed by Chris Hopewell, who previously directed the animated video for Radiohead's 2003 single "There There". It uses stop-motion animation in the style of the Trumptonshire trilogy, a series of 1960s English children's television programmes. The video was conceived and finished in 14 days and released on YouTube one week later on 3 May 2016. The story homages the 1973 horror film The Wicker Man and depicts mob rule in a rural community. An inspector is greeted by a town mayor and shown a series of unsettling sights, culminating in the unveiling of a wicker man. The mayor urges the inspector to climb into it, whereupon he is locked inside as a human sacrifice and the wicker man is set on fire. As the flames gather, the townspeople turn their backs and wave goodbye to the camera. The inspector escapes among the trees. You did a very good job, Chris Hopewell.

  5. I want to thank Mr Adrian for sharing his music playlist. I want to give some of my thoughts about the first song which titled “You Oughta Know” by “Alanis Morissette”. The first time I saw the thumbnail, I thought this was a sad-song. I read the lyrics in the first verse, I still thought that this was a sad-song. Then, I played the music on, surprisingly she sang it quite portray the feelings really well. She seemed strongly enough to let it all go, but as a woman, ofcourse, there would be some mixed feelings when you see someone you once loved to be with other woman. She has the guts to tell her feelings by saying those lyrics. The line, “Are you thinking of me when you're with her?” made me giggle for a while. Respect for those who are dealing with broken-heart but still maintain their self-esteem.

  6. The song and music video I would like to comment on is the last song, Burn The Witch by Radiohead. The music video starts off light, with clay figures of a village merely preparing their day to day activities, in preparation for the town inspector to come in. The concept of it all seems normal, until the activities of the villagers are revealed. It starts with the painting of red ‘X’s on doors, a reference to the lyric, but also referencing how in the past people who caught the plagued had their doors painted on, a sign that they were sick. Each activity shown becomes increasingly creepier, from the trial of a woman being surrounded by people wearing animal skulls and carrying swords to the noose decorated with flowers. With each activity, the inspector becomes more disturbed and at this point, so is the viewer, but the song itself is so hypnotizing, with the string progressions and the vocalist’s unique vocals, they force themselves to keep watching. The song becomes its eeriest at the end, when it is revealed just how disturbing the villagers are when they burn the inspector inside the wick man, where the strings progressively become haunting.

  7. About the second song, “The Mayor of Simpleton, based on wikipedia.org, "Mayor of Simpleton" is a song written by Andy Partridge of the English band XTC. XTC were an English rock band formed in Swindon in 1972 and active until 2006. “Mayor of Simpleton” was released as the first single from their 1989 album Oranges & Lemons. The single reached No. 72 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart, number 1 on its Modern Rock chart, and number 15 on its Mainstream Rock chart, XCT becoming the band's best-performing single in the United States. The song began as a reggae tune and went through numerous different versions. Lyrically, the song describes a man who is looked down upon by his girlfriend's peers for being reportedly uneducated and non-intellectual, stating that despite this, he is devoted to her; one lyric from the chorus is "I may be the mayor of simpleton, but I know one thing is that I love you.

    1. I think Violina is very resourceful because she wrote the information of the song in the comment section and included the source of the information. I appreciate you, Violina! People barely put their source of information when they write something. Anyway, I want to talk about the writer of the song. When I searched his name on Google, I didn’t expect him to be very good-looking when he was young. Anyway, the writer of the song, Andy Partridge, is an English singer, songwriter, guitarist, and record producer from Swindon. He was born in Malta on 11 November 1953. He co-founded the rock band XTC, in which he served as the group's primary songwriter and vocalist. While the band was formed as an early punk rock group, Partridge's music drew heavily from British Invasion songwriters, and his style gradually shifted to more traditional pop, often with pastoral themes. The band's only British top 10 hit, "Senses Working Overtime" (1982), was written by Partridge.
