Think how hard you work to try to phrase things in precisely the right way and you will understand how annoying it is when someone lifts your own original ideas and claims them for their own. However, it is not only annoying for the writer of the original text, it is also dangerous for the person who copies it. If plagiarism is spotted in your writing, your college has the right to fail your essay, or fail you in an exam, and in the most serious cases of cheating in this way, to send you down from the university. It is very easy for markers to spot plagiarism:
- because they know the subject well
- because they have read all the books you're likely to refer to
- because plagiarism will result in a change of style within the essay
The most important thing is always to quote and reference correctly and then you will avoid problems of plagiarism. But if you need to mention someone else's work and you can't find or don't want to provide a quotation, how can you do it? The best approach might be to follow these steps:
- read and understand the original text
- close the book and write out the main points in your own words
- rephrase the main points into your own passage
- compare your writing with the original and make sure that no sentences or long phrases are the same
- don't worry if the quality of the writing is not quite as high as the original….it's much more important that you use your own words.
Remember, if you acknowledge someone else's writing, it will not be plagiarism.
Remember as well, that without trying to put ideas into your own words, you will never develop your own style and never gain in confidence as far as your writing goes. Stitching a few ideas together from someone else's writing does nothing to improve your own writing skills and nothing for your understanding of the subject.
What do you think about these examples? Plagiarism or not?
Sam's essay:
Third, Carl Gardner describes the new 'high-tech' shopping centres how they varied in size and style, spectacularly produced glass atria or glazed barrel-vaults which helps to use the natural light to flood the shops and walkways.
Original:
Though varied in size and style, nearly all centres offer the same basic features. Most importantly, there are spectacularly engineered glass atria or glazed barrel-vaults to flood the shops and walkways with natural light.

In academic life students will meet many assignments where they will do many writings that involve research and gaining facts. This problem force students to remember the resources of when they're gaining facts. Then, they must write the resources and reference to show that they are not doing plagiarism.
ReplyDeleteSince i was in highschool plagiarism has come to each of every student in my school. They were too lazy of searching and answering their own question where actually they can just search and copy then paste the answers. I honestly have done plagiarism as well in my academic life but not in the university . Not doing plagiarism in university is a very hard thing to do. Student's now choose cheating rather than plagiarism. They prefer cheating on their friends work rather than doing plagiarism and causing them to eventually get caught by the lecturer. This is the main problem for students nowadays.
Plagiarism is a common thing in every students life, especially in highschool. I admit I have done plagiarism before when I was in high school, but I have promised myself not to do it again in college. In my opinion, Plagiarism is a way of doing things easier by just copying work from a friend or classmate, even though it makes us lazier to do assignments because we can just copy work from a friend.
ReplyDeleteTo answer the question and example given above, in my opinion that Sam’s essay is not considered as Plagiarism. Because from what I read, I personally think that Sam has adapted not Plagiarism but Paraphrasing. Paraphrasing is a good way to explain something taken from a source but using other words so it does not count as plagiarism. I find that paraphrasing is very helpful for me and other students to get work done without being accused of plagiarism.
Plagiarism is a huge topic of issue when entering a college. Every students are highly warn to avoid doing plagiarism. But indeed, sometimes plagiarism is inevitable when we don’t really understand what plagiarism is actually looks like. Meanwhile, do such prevention of plagiarism is easy; all we have to do is to do citation for every new information that we obtain from a certain resource. It’s purpose is to respect the original content of the information made by its author.
ReplyDeleteMoving on to answering the question above; as we can see from the writing, Sam just did a plagiarism. She/he certainly did because there is no citation exist after the sentence; meaning that Sam claimed that the sentence were originally made by her/himself. But in fact, it is not; since it is originally from other people. So, what Sam suppose to do is to add a bracket of sentence that include the last name of the original author, the year of the source published, and also the page of the source (if it is a book). These three aspects are for Author Date Style format, and it can be different if Sam want to use a different format like MLA or APA. By using these citation formats, it will help Sam to avoid such plagiarism; and the reader can directly check the originality of the content that Sam’s wrote and will take it as credible source.
Considering most of the college assigments consist of writing, a writing skill is very much needed in this circumstances. Of course not everyone has an excellent writing skill, including me, but unfortunately some people prefer choosing the instant way to achieve maximum grade, that includes cheating and plagiarism. To avoid doing such things we need to understand how important it is to do citation and mentioning the source that we use for our writing. Like said above, we wouldn't understand how it feels until someone did it to us. So I guess it's our pride on the line. Wouldn't it be embarassing for any of us if we ever get caught doing plagiarism? And to answer the question, I don't think that Sam's essay is considered an act of plagiarism, because he did the citation, mentioning the source, and he didn't use the exact same sentence from the original article written.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, Plagiarism is the common activity in our academic life. a lot of students are like to do that things, while they're doing their assignment, doing their homework, etc. although, it is an unethical way to pursuit a good mark, some of them are neglect it because they think that the goal is the most important matter than the process. To be honest, I'm also do that way before. By looking my friends assignment, I can get a good mark without any difficult things. I don’t need do such a hard things to know the answer, what I need to do is just copying my friends assignment and it is done. From that, I realize that to reach the goal we don’t need any effort, we can do it easily by doing the plagiarism method. However,Since I have studied in UGM, I'm really avoid to do that way. I wise up that plagiarism just help us in short term to reach the goal, but actually we don't get anything from doing it. And also, I think it is not just about rule out the conscience, but it shows that we do not respect the original authors. In summary, Process is the most important thing to get rather than the result.
ReplyDeleteAs a student, we often hear about what is plagiarism. Plagiarism is an action to copy other people's work. In school, we are taught to not to do plagiarism, because it is an inappropriate thing to do. But, it the student wolrd, it is not strange to do a plagiarism. Every student have done it before even though it is a bad things to do. Not only copting test, but copying homework is also plagiarism. As an UGM students, we are taught to stand against plagiarism. Since PPSMB, if there was anyone who did plagiarism on their homework, they would have their consequences. Personaly, i've ever done plagiarism before. But, it was like 4 years ago. Since senuor high school i've never done it again because my high school has very strict rule to anticipate plagiarism. Students who did plagiarism would got an SP or "Surat Peringatan". It is like a warning letter, and if you get one warning letter, you will not get promoted to the next grade, and if you get two warning letters, you will be dropped out from school. So, since then, i've never did plagiarism again.
ReplyDeleteTo me, plagiarism means theft of others' intellectual properties. It means, copying some texts from other sources without appropriate citation. Some people are so smart to plagiarise without leaving any fingerprints. Plagiarism is a serious offence. Many of us use the word ‘plagiarism’ interchangeably with ‘copying’ work from someone else, or ‘borrowing’ someone else’s original ideas. It only tends to undermine the seriousness of the offence we commit by stealing other people’s work, passing it off as our work, and not crediting our source for the idea. It is an act of fraud. College students often turn to professional dissertation writing services because they know how to cite all the resources properly, and how to avoid intentional or unintentional instances of plagiarism. The experts understand that it is not only necessary to acknowledge others’ words or ideas but also other forms of expression like images, illustrations, graphs, music, videos, and other forms of media.
ReplyDeletePlagiarism as what the article had stated, “passing off someone else's writing as your own” (ETC Distance Learning, 2007). It’s also considered as a common mistake that students, who just began their study at the higher level, often struggle with. For some people, the reason why they plagiarized someone else’s work might be due to their lazy habit of not wanting to paraphrase the information. But for other, the problem lies in the incomplete/ lack of background information (for example, the date published/updated) that was provided by the source. For me, the second reason seemed to be more reasonable, as I also faced this same problem. The complex form of citation, different regulations, and format that writer must have in their citations is what I think to be the problem. I think if people want to fix the problem of plagiarism, the author of the sources must give a more simple or obvious background information (date published, updated, publisher, etc.) for people to easily cite the source. Therefore, people are more willing to cite the source without having to spend too much time finding all the necessary information for them to cite the sources properly.
ReplyDeleteTo answer the question above regarding whether Sam plagiarized or not, I would say that Sam had committed plagiarism. Although Sam cited his information by stating that it was Carl Gardner’s idea, the citation is still not proper enough. A proper in-text citation requires at least the author’s name and the published date, though for some other types of citation they require you to use the title of the work, etc. Besides the absence of a proper citation format, Sam also didn’t really paraphrase some of the words he got from his source. For example, the phrase “flood the shops and walkways with natural light” also exist in Sam’s essay, but the difference is that Sam changes the order of the phrase rather than changing some of the words in that phrase. I think Sam did a great job on changing the order of the facts by separating them into different sentences. However, he should also consider to not copy the description word by word. I think in order to prevent plagiarism, I would suggest Sam to just quote the information and give the source for the quotation. By quoting the information, it’s much safer for Sam since it seems like he already did but didn’t give the apostrophe and also to prevent Sam from committing plagiarism.
DeletePersonally, I have a zero tolerance towards plagiarism. From the article above, plagiarism is described as using other people’s answer or task and claiming it to be your own answer. Plagiarism is most likely to occur in University level because most of the tasks and exams are in a form of essays and some students are lazy to do their tasks based on their own effort. People that do plagiarism or even consider to do such thing are the people who have no respect and sense of responsibility. Imagine if you have worked hard and have given your best effort on doing your essay and at the end of the day, someone claims your task and it is not only the person who gets into trouble but you will also be dragged into it. During the student orientation in University of Gadjah Mada, we were taught to uphold the value of integrity which is a moral principle to be honest in every aspect and it includes plagiarism. Since then, I have become more aware towards the importance of integrity.
ReplyDeletePlagiarizing is a stupid thing to do. The people who get busted plagiarizing are the ones that copy information word for word. Don’t be that person, because you will get caught and you’ll look like an idiot (and likely fail the class). I hate to break it to you, but in order to do this right, you actually have to do some work. The most important things to avoid plagiarism is to put source or citation information to your journal or essay, as long as you have a citation somewhere within the paragraph of information, you should be safe. You have to avoid plagiarism for classes you don’t care about to begin with, or for when you really did completely forget about the assignment and you’re totally screwed otherwise. This is a gamble, and the more often you play with fire, the more likely you are to get burned.
ReplyDeletePlagiarism is a crime. I’ve never been introduced to this fact until I was in the 10th grade. At that time, my classmates and I were told that it’s vital for us to attach the sources of the information that we put into our work; the assignment that time was to create a report about the average time Indonesians spent on the road for the year 2015. The teacher reminded us so much about plagiarism as it is something that involved a lot of data. Thus, not quoting and referencing would result in a ‘D’ score.
ReplyDeleteAs new college students, all of us were highly warned about plagiarism. I remember that we were told that it is always necessary for us to appreciate others’ work.
When making an essay, a thesis, or any other types of writing for example, it is mandatory for all college students to recognize the source of the information or ideas that they came from. This is one way to appreciate the original writer’s work.
To answer the question whether what Sam had written is an act of plagiarism or not; I’m pretty sure that what he did is an act of plagiarism. Here’s the reasons. First, he clearly didn’t add any citation in his writing. This shows that he didn’t appreciate the original writer and pretend that his writing is original. Second, most of the words used in his essay was taken from the original writing; even he used the same expressive word ‘spectacularly’. The only thing he did was rearranging the sentence. He should’ve at least added citation in his work.
Plagiarism is an act of using or closely imitating the language and thoughts of another author without authorization and the representation of that author’s work as one’s own, as by not crediting original author. Plagiarism had always been an issue for undergraduate students. It seems to me that students tend to get confused by citation rules. There is some debate regarding a lack of standardized views about what needs to be cited and how and what constitutes plagiarism. For example there are APA formatting which is very straight-forward about what parameters are to be used. There’s also MLA format who still follows very specific guidelines. In addition, they both are exceedingly clear on not taking credit for work you didn’t create. Cut-and-paste plagiarism is the most common form of Internet plagiarism. The most common sources were Wikipedia, Yahoo Answers, and eNotes. Students may not realize they are plagiarizing if they copy material from the Internet and include it in their papers without attribution. I suppose that it is better for students to follow document formatting guidelines such as APA or MLA to avoid plagiarism. Citing isn’t that complicated and it must be done correctly to avoid plagiarism allegations.
ReplyDeletePlagiarism is important for us, students, to avoid especially in academic writing. We aren't supposed to ‘steal’ someone else’s ideas and claim it as our own. We are allowed to use someone else’s ideas as long as we give credit to them and there are proper ways in doing so. Since I was in high school, plagiarism is something that students were taught to avoid. We were taught how to properly cite, paraphrase, quoting and even making a proper bibliography. Now, I feel that those lessons were very important and will definitely help me in doing future assignments. When we were in high school, not putting proper citation or bibliography might still be acceptable and can be forgiven. However, in university not putting citation could be categorized as plagiarism and could be penalized. Even during the PPSMB, academic integrity was one of the topics that were discussed. They made it clear that plagiarism is unacceptable in university.
ReplyDeleteBy definition, plagiarism is the "wrongful appropriation" and "stealing and publication" of another author's "language, thoughts, ideas, or expressions" and the representation of them as one's own original work. Plagiarism can be categorized as fraud, because it is another way of stealing. Since high school, we were taught to avoid plagiarism. In high school, teachers told us to at least put a source if we’re copying a theory from the internet or a book. UGM is strict for anti-plagiarism. Every new college student in FEB had to come to a session of anti-plagiarism. We were taught how to make citation, the formats, positions, punctuations and others. They also gave us some exercises about this material. Even though I found this seminar quite boring, but I found it useful. I get to know more about how to make a citation, paraphrase, and others. In conclusion, I agree that anti-plagiarism should be trained to students starting from high school. Because, if students are not trained, it is likely that they will steal other people’s ideas.
ReplyDeletePlagiarism is something that is unethical and included as a crime, is also something that is keep happening in education life. Student still do this plagiarism although they know that plagiarism is wrong and is a crime. However, I realized that in university, students tend to be more afraid to do plagiarism than high school students does. The punishment university give to plagiarism criminals is more strict than high school. This proves that students will do least plagiarism if the punishment is strict and real. If they do plagiarism all the time and still not being caught, they will continue to do that. Because in the end, student still care about their grades and their education, so if this plagiarism could risk their education future, I am pretty sure they will be deterrent to do that again. And for the case above, in my opinion Sam is doing a plagiarism because he didn’t input citation for his writing.
ReplyDeletePlagiarism has always been recognised as a big issue within the world of education. I believe that this action must have been committed by most of students, and according to my life experiences i feel like middle school is the first place where this kind of act started to get popular and frequently committed by student. Why? because normally in the stage of middle school, the study will started to involved some sort essay writing and other kind of work that required some reference and information. Besides, the rule and the firmness towards this action in the stage of middle school wasn’t very strict, and in addition, these student did not even have enough knowledge about what can be considered as a plagiarism either. Therefore the student tend to take this action lightly and this mindset begin to grow until it reached a point where it has already become a habit and normality. To answer the question, i can easily tell that sam has committed the act of plagiarism, because she did not put any citation towards the sentence. She should’ve add the authors last name, published year of the resources, or the page number if she get it from a book.
ReplyDeletePlagiarism is a significant problem today, it could be considered as an action of crime by stealing others ideas without crediting them. It appears that people always consider how terrible it is when plagiarism comes to academic atmosphere. In fact, it is known as an act of fraud not just in the world of academic, but in every field. If we are talking about plagiarism in academic point of view, we could receive the fact that some students still consider plagiarising as an option due to their laziness and untrained skills of writing which is a false action. Universitas Gadjah Mada is a university that stand strong in rejecting plagiarism. Not only the compulsory anti plagiarism seminar given to us, but the education to reject plagiarism had been started since our orientation week. Hopefully, plagiarism could decrease and reduce one day by the help of the university seminars or even simpler, self awareness.
ReplyDeleteTo answer the question above, I'm pretty sure sam is plagiarising because of not citing the source to credit the author.
Plagiarism has been taken as a shortcut for some students to finish their assignment earlier. There are at least two arguable reasons of why the case of plagiarism in schools and/or universities have risen. First, it is because the lack of time to do the assignment itself. When a student is neglectful towards his or her individual assignment, he or she will procrastinate getting the assignment done and will result in the shrinking amount of time to do the assignment originally. Second, the lack of source or knowledge of the material. Although there are big libraries with many books collection in universities, there is still a slight plausibility that it does not carry all the material exists in the world. If this happen, the student who has to deal with the assignment must refer to a limited source. The student will not be able to acknowledge the material very well and eventually results in plagiarism.
ReplyDeleteTo put it shortly, plagiarism is the act of stealing someone’s original work.
ReplyDeleteI believed that everyone that goes to any kind of school have at least came across the problem of plagiarism whether intentionally unintentionally. This is mainly caused by how hard it is to actually to avoid the problem itself, and how early schools such as elementary, or middle school do not see it as a big thing that needs to be thought as soon as possible. Thinking back, I have done a lot of plagiarism due to not understanding such things that counts as plagiarism or not. Now that i am an UGM student I understand well what counts as plagiarism.
The answer to the question of whether Sam had done plagiarism is yes. Right of the bat we can see that it is just a rearranged version of the original work, and we also see that there is no citation. This will make the reader think that the original writer is Sam.
Plagiarism is not a new concept for me but I have never really realized the importance of it till now. I have been introduced to the idea of plagiarism since I was in junior high school but then the idea was emphasized when I come to college. I should have realized the importance of avoiding plagiarism sooner because in the academic life, I will come across many tasks that involve writing my own papers and researches. It is unethical to copy someone else’s work and claim it as yours because in order to come up with the text, the author might have done many researches and come up with ideas which takes a lot of time and effort. Many thoughts have been involved. So for us to be lazy and not think, just copying, is considered being very disrespectful towards the author. Therefore, when we want to include other people’s ideas in our writings, we should paraphrase it and also add a citation to mention the source of the idea.
ReplyDeleteIn spite of the justice or fairness that plagiarism brings to the academic world, sometimes I feel overwhelmed with the thought that I might include someone else’s idea in an academic paper without myself even realising. The thing is, the fact that some people may come up or bring forth an idea that has already existed a couple of decades ago makes the whole plagiarism concept more like a race of whoever presents and submits an idea first to the academic registration of thousands of references. Although the concept of plagiarism has become an international rule that widely regulates the way students and researchers write academic writings, if plagiarism doesn’t try to adapt to the increasing population growth of the Earth, then it is the future generations that will suffer the burden of having to produce an original academic work of their own knowing that almost every idea that they could possibly come up with had already been claimed by the previous generations which had finished the race before the future generations even got the chance to see the race track.

DeletePerhaps, such a solution might work, although one can’t ignore the naivety and optimism that may be coating the method. First, I would suggest for every single member that makes up the whole global academic world to agree upon an organization whose main purpose would be to store thousands or even millions of academic contingents’ academic writings. This organisation would then have an enormous virtual library that consisted of the different academic writings the universities all around the world had uploaded. These academic writings would be sorted in the names of the students or people who had come up with such ideas, the date in which the writings were uploaded, the universities they studied or worked in, and many more. Second, these academic writings or documents would be made available for the public to see or for whoever opened the organisation’s website. Next, the organisation would establish a sophisticated system where for every single view that an academic writing received, that academic writing would earn itself a set of fifteen days to add to its patent or copyright life. Therefore, popular academic writings whose contents have been proven to be more extraordinary that those of other academic documents will live longer, while the rest of the other academic writings which contained contents or ideas who sparked very little interest in the academic world would die out and eventually be replaced with a new academic document on the same topic, but done by a different person who managed to do better in elaborating the ideas in his/her academic writing. Next, this organisation would be funded by the different universities who contributed in the accumulation of the academic writings in the organisation’s virtual library. Therefore, it basically means that every single university in this world will have the responsibility to contribute by uploading their academic contingents’ academic writings into the organisation’s system as well as funding them. Such funding would be utilised by the organisation to improve the efficiency of its system as well as grow and better equip its storage to contain more academic writings or documents to go side by side with the population growth of the Earth.
DeletePlagiarism is not a new thing in the world of education. Plagiarism is categorized as a crime. We as a student usually don't realize that we do plagiarism. It is very ironic to found out that a lot of students still doing plagiarism even though they know that it is a wrong thing to do. We have to know that plagiarism is something that we must getting rid of. Students must aware that if we want to put someone work in our task or assignments we have to give credits to the author. It is important because by giving credits it means that we appreciate their hard work. If we always get used to do plagiarism then it will be hard for us in the future since we have to submit our original work in the future. It is a very shameful attitude to copy someone works and claimed that it is our works. As a student that upholds integrity, we must avoid plagiarism.
ReplyDeletePlagiarism is something very common in an academic environment. However, a lot of students are unaware of how serious plagiarism actually is. Plagiarism is an act of theft, and students should not take it lightly. There are several kinds of plagiarism, but the most common is direct plagiarism. Direct plagiarism is when someone copies someone else’s work word-for-word, without attribution or quotation marks. This kind of plagiarism is deliberate and extremely unethical, and is usually subject to disciplinary action, including expulsion. However, accidental plagiarism is a type of plagiarism done unintentionally. It is when a person neglects to cite their sources, misquotes their sources, or unintentionally paraphrases a source by using similar words, and/or a sentence without attribution. Accidental plagiarism is still taken as seriously as other types of other plagiarism. This is why students shouldn’t take the act of plagiarism lightly. Schools should also equip students with seminars to teach students how to cite their resources properly to minimize plagiarism in the academic life.
ReplyDeletePlagiarism, a topic that’s often discussed by students, and something that’s avoided by all students especially when making academic papers or academic essays. Plagiarism, is when a work of a person was attached to another individual’s work without citing the source of the work or the theory or the idea. It’s something that’s common between high-schoolers as well as university students. In my high school, plagiarism is something that my teacher was very concerned about, to be precise, the teacher is my Sociology teacher. She’s concerned with plagiarism in our essays since according to her, if we got used to cite someone’s work without credit, it would be a huge disadvantage for us in university. Because of that, I would like to thank her for the heads-up back in high school. Speaking of the plagiarism or not statement cited on the blog, for me it’s not an act of plagiarism, since Sam do restates the paragraph instead of pure copying and pasting, and he do cite the source of information which makes it not an act of plagiarism.
ReplyDeletePlagiarism is something I never really cared about when I was in high school. I used to just copy anything from what I found online and submit it carelessly. I know that what I did was wrong. I just didn't realize how important and serious plagiarism was. Now that I am studying in Gadjah Mada University, I realize how serious plagiarism is in academic and non-academic environment. Whenever I found an article online, I would always put a link or source in my essay so that people would know where did I got the information from. I think that plagiarism should be discussed more in junior and senior high school more often so that students could understand how serious plagiarism is. I can't imagine how the writers or researchers would feel if they found out that what they have been working for months or maybe years got plagiarized. This is why plagiarism is such an important issue.
ReplyDeletePlagiarism is not just an act of copy and paste of mere words; it’s also copying someone else’s ideas and making it your own. The subject is not uncommon to students, because in high school and middle school the students do not really think much about copying and just pasting it from the articles on the internet. Plus the indifference of the teachers—as long as the assignment is done, then it’s done. It can be concluded that plagiarism shows lack of knowledge and skill, not to mention the lack of ethical mannerism. To resolve the issue, people usually use what’s so called citation. Based on Wikipedia, a citation is an abbreviated alphanumeric expression embedded in the body of an intellectual work that denotes an entry in the bibliographic references section of the work for the purpose of acknowledging the relevance of the works of others to the topic of discussion at the spot where the citation appears. To conclude, Sam’s case is concluded as plagiarism because he didn’t use citation.
ReplyDeletePlagiarism is an issue that definitely must be tackled by everyone, most commonly students and college scholars. In definition, Plagiarism is dishonesty because it uses the work and thoughts of others as if it were a work and a thought. Inadvertently it can also occur if it is negligent in finding complete and accurate library sources. The results of plagiarism are called plagiarism and the culprit is called plagiarism. Plagiarism is not yet sufficiently recognized and understood especially among students so that the incidence rate is quite high and difficult to monitor. The emergence of behavior as a plagiarist as well as ordinary criminal behavior is also due to lack of success in transforming educational methods so that analytical and synthetic thinking patterns are not internalized in higher education. Higher education institutions, lecturers, and students must be collectively responsible for recognizing and dealing with plagiarism. Especially senior lecturers and student advisers must have strong knowledge, skills and motivation to recognize, resist and provide strict academic sanctions to the plagiarists in the academic community.
ReplyDeleteIn the local context in the country, plagiarism cases are reported to be prone to occur in universities. The Ministry of Education and Culture has investigated allegations of plagiarism cases in a number of universities. Those who have been proven to commit plagiarism can be subject to sanctions, ranging from demotion, revocation of academic degrees, to termination of employment. However, in practice the sanctions against cases of plagiarism committed by lecturers or students, generally submitted to universities, each involving the ethics commission, the university senate and the professor's senate. The decision. The end is in the hands of the respective chancellors. After the rampant plagiarism case, a number of universities claim to have succeeded in creating antiplagiarism software tools or devices. One of the universities that is proud to introduce antiplagiarism software products is Unpar Bandung. The University of Surabaya and Binus University have also succeeded in making guidebooks or manuals on efforts to prevent and overcome the problem of plagiarism. Not long ago the Directorate General of Higher Education also issued a circular regarding the threat of severe sanctions for perpetrators of acts of plagiarism. The initiative of each individual to have academic honesty from each individual is the most critical and important thing to not exacting plagiarism.
DeletePersonally, I have done plagiarism during past times. Not only during High School, but even during the orientation program of the Faculty of Economics and Business, I've conducted plagiarism, on an assignment regarding TEDxTalk to be exact. To be honest, I'm not proud of doing it, it means that my mind was not capable at the time to think creatively and critically. But on the other hand, I don't know if I will conduct those bad actions again or not, that decision to fall into the same hole again, could be determined by future factors surrounding assignments given by lecturers and the state of mind I will endure.
DeleteTo be frank, the program the University of Gadjah Mada has given it's students regarding plagiarism could be useful, if the college students listen or regard the importance of those classes or seminars. I believe that the only remaining way to tackle this issue is to enforced fear on students of why plagiarism could ruin you the academical journey of your life.
Plagiarism today is very popular among us all. Although I have known this word for a long time, from elementary school to high school, my friends and I were less concerned with the word 'plagiarism'. This is because, we rarely get assignments, and in high school we did not get enough knowledge about the importance of not doing plagiarism. When I entered college at this university, the topic of plagiarism was very popular, and was often emphasized especially for new students like me. I think with enough notification about plagiarism, for example through seminars, we all become aware and begin to reduce the forms of plagiarism that often occur in our daily life, in order to build our true personality. Besides, by doing plagiarism, students will also get fairly strict sanctions, and in my opinion, we better do everything according to our own abilities because it will make us aware and try to develop ourselves.
ReplyDeletePlagiarism is a bad habit that most of people have. Plagiarism can be because of a lot of things such as the person is lazy to understand the material and lazy to do his/her assignments. Another factor is when a person wants to take their friend idea but forget to put where the source of idea comes from. The simplest and easiest example of plagiarism is cheating. In this era plagiarism is more complicated such as when we copy the source and write it with different word. Even tough some people don’t see this as plagiarism but it is actually a plagiarism. Ways to prevent plagiarism is by reading lot of article, putting the source of the things we are copying, and write differently from the source that we get. Plagiarism in Indonesia now are getting more and more because there are no training and seminars to educated the young generations.
ReplyDeleteThere are lots of students that have been plagiarizing especially in Indonesia. When I went to some high school in Indonesia as a road trip, I was so shocked that there are still lots of people copying and pasting the work of others without a citation and a proper paraphrase. This happen often in a presentation. Instead of writing the main point, students usually write the whole paragraph from a blog and paste it to their Powerpoint. The sad part about this is that the teacher did not even try to correct the students and proceed as if nothing happens. This is bad because people want to get credited for their work that is why we need to write the author’s name. all school need to do a socialization about plagiarism and show how important it is to give credit to the original author. Also, plagiarism shows the laziness of a person and it made their mind not creative. With paraphrasing, people can train their brain more.
ReplyDeleteI would like to share my opinion about plagiarism. Copying someone’s work is much easier than creating a new one. You only need to transfer their idea into your working sheet. In addition, internet gives us more chances to do so. Type a keyword, click a link, and then you get what you want. Those are the facts that we have to sadly admit it.
ReplyDeleteThe example above shows another way of plagiarism. It may not fully copy it, but copying with a little modification. It is allowed to quote a sentence if we put where we get the information, the author, writer, and any other important information which show the originality of the idea.
It is about the value we possess. If we set a high value for ourselves, we can be far from plagiarism. If we set a low value for ourselves, we can be close to plagiarism. It is why human is different. We have value. We are wise enough to be far from plagiarism.
Most student does not realize the harmful aspect of plagiarism. Most of them are not even aware that they might be committing plagiarism as they don’t really understand what plagiarism actually is. Plagiarism is an act of copying another author’s work without citing or claiming it as one’s personal work, whether we do it purposefully or accidentally. It is important for us to credit and cite the original author for the excerpts we take from their work as it shows that we have acknowledged their work and not claiming it as our own, as it can be viewed as theft of an idea. Another way we can avoid plagiarism is by rephrasing the words of the author to our own personal understanding. Although we still have to cite the author for their idea, rephrasing the words of the author into our own words will also show our understanding of the passage and how we interpret it in our own words.
ReplyDeletePlagiarism is often misunderstood by some people, it surely can’t be taken easily as it is considered a crime. Copying off someone else’s work or ideas as your own without giving any appropriate citation is plagiarism. In my high school, plagiarism isn’t a big deal as some students sometimes copy off many references from the web with the exact same words and without putting any reference on the work. I think this is because my school wasn’t clear enough about the act of plagiarism and some of the teachers are probably too lazy to check the whole work of many students. My high school never tolerates plagiarism, and you can see banners of anti plagiarism to persuade students around the school. However, the implementation of this is not working at all.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, Sam’s essay isn’t considered plagiarism. It is clear that Sam had included the reference correctly on his paragraph explaining about new ‘high tech’ shopping centres according to Carl Gardner.
Back when I was in high school, there are several assignments that requires me to write about certain topics. Right now as I am a college student, the assignments are not other than writing also. Sometime we just want to get things done and take the shortcut, copy paste information that you gathered from online websites. When you copy paste the whole information as it is, it is considered as plagiarism. Plagiarism is a common thing in the education world, and it is consider as a crime. It is sad to say that students are not aware about how serious plagiarism is. I think the best way to avoid plagiarism is doing a paraphrasing, paraphrasing is when you gathered information online and you read and understand it then you write it with your own words and style. It is different but contains a slightly the same information from what you have gathered. It is translating other people’s ideas into your own word in a reduced form, you can’t just change two or more words from the sentence but you have to explain it in a new sentence with your own words.
ReplyDeletePliagiarism is something you would not do at all because, when you start to pliagirize you tend to get carried away and it becomes a bad habit, a really bad habit. In academic life, there are many essays and research that we may face and sometimes it gets too overwhelming to the point where we run out of ideas and have this urge to steal other's work or craft. Pliagiarism is a crime, I suppose; blatantly stealing other people's work without giving credits is just pure evil. We should always give credits to the authors or the source in which we get the information or inspiration from because by doing that we are also showing respect and that is important. Pliagiarism is some kind of shortcut to get our work done quickly but that is very wrong to do. Putting reference at the end of our work is a simple way to show that we respect the authors by giving credits where its due.
