Hotels chafe at online travel firms

When you last went on away on a trip, how did you arrange your accommodation?

Chances are that you found a hotel room on the internet. Perhaps you booked it through an online travel agent (OTA) such as Expedia or Booking.com.

Maybe you checked out hotel reviews on a site such as TripAdvisor.

Or possibly you didn't even consider staying in a hotel, preferring instead to find somewhere to stay via Airbnb or another home-letting company.

All these developments are taking their toll on the traditional hotel industry. But for now, the one that worries hotel bosses most is the increasing power that online travel firms wield over them.

The hotel trade is highly fragmented. The biggest operator worldwide, Intercontinental Hotels Group, has about 4,500 hotels. In contrast, Booking.com lists 500,000 hotels worldwide.

As a result, OTAs are able to charge ever higher levels of commission. If you booked your hotel room through one of them, they could easily be receiving a quarter of the money you paid for it.

This week, Best Western UK chief executive Richard Lewis sounded off at the World Travel Market in London about the effect of this on the hotel business.

"The customer will not pay the rates we are having to charge if 25% goes out of the window before the guest even arrives," he said.

Botched reform

Of course, the online agencies argue that they are doing a lot of promotional work on behalf of the hotels. Any independent family-run hotel can have its own website, but it will not have the same online presence as EXPEDIA, which invests heavily in advertising.

In return, OTAs want the right to offer the cheapest rates and take a sizeable commission.

It's a complicated business, as trading watchdogs have found after a botched attempt to regulate the issue.

In July 2012, the Office of Fair Trading (OFT) ruled that discount deals struck by Intercontinental Hotels with Booking.com and Expedia were contrary to competition law.

Then, in January this year, it changed its mind, saying that consumers could benefit from price cuts, either from an agent or the hotel itself, as long as they signed up to a membership scheme and had previously booked a room at the full rate.

These discount offers could not be shared with anyone outside the "closed group" of people entitled to benefit.

But in September, that messy compromise was thrown out by the UK Competition Appeal Tribunal after hearing objections from Skyscanner, a price comparison service that trawls the web to find cheap deals.

Skyscanner argued that it could not offer its customers the best price available if that price was not to be found on the internet, available to all. So now the Competition and Markets Authority, which has replaced the OFT, has been told to reopen the investigation.

Repeat visits

You may be wondering where the customer fits into all this. Well, the good news is that hoteliers are thinking about that as well.

Best Western's Richard Lewis says that people may visit as many as 17 different websites before booking a room online.

"If they only spend 10 minutes on each website, that's not very long," he said at the World Travel Market. "But they're going to spend a minimum of eight hours in that room. There's an opportunity there."

Essentially, the hotel industry is realising that it needs to do more to encourage repeat visits: to ensure that a guest who discovered a hotel through an OTA will book directly with the hotel next time.

Cho Wong, managing director of Supranational Hotels, says 30% of bookings at the 800 hotels in his chain come from Booking.com.

"We need to learn from other retailers," he says, pointing out that supermarket chains have long used promotional offers to build a loyal customer base. "If you have a voucher so that next time you get 20% off or free drinks at the bar, you will come back."

Another way for hotels to regain the initiative is to offer what Mr Lewis calls "price parity, but product disparity".

In other words, since the OTAs will not let hotels offer lower prices to customers who book direct, the hotels could offer other sweeteners, such as free breakfasts, a free bottle of wine or some other incentive.

But the travel industry is a fast-moving business and the impact of "disruptive" technology may not yet have run its course.

Industry insiders reckon it is only a matter of time before internet giants Google and Facebook enter the online travel business in their own right, putting EXPEDIA and Booking.com under pressure from a new direction.

Right to review?

Meanwhile, so-called "peer-to-peer" travel, which allows travellers to stay in
other people's homes rather than in hotels, is also growing.

According to a survey of 1,011 UK holidaymakers carried out for the World Travel Market 2014 Industry Report, 9% have booked a holiday through a peer-to-peer site such as AIRBNB, Housetrip or HomeAway.

Of that admittedly small percentage, 86% say they would do it again.

Dorian Harris, founder of discount booking website Skoosh, sees AIRBNB and its rivals as "the biggest threat or challenge to the hotel industry of all".

He sees them as "absolutely primed" to grab market share from the hotel trade, thanks to what he calls "infighting among hotels AT the cost of customer service".

And talking of customer service, disgruntled hotel guests now have online outlets for their frustration, with sites such as TRIPADVISOR giving them the chance to write reviews after their stays.

Mr Lewis says TripAdvisor has raised people's expectations of hotels, "and that's a good thing".

He warns that there is now "no hiding place" for bad hoteliers.

But users of AIRBNB should be wary: just as they have the right to pass judgement on the accommodation provided, the people whose houses they stay in have the right to review them as well.

Technology is forcing the travel industry to be more transparent in many ways, but as a consequence, travellers themselves are likely to come under more scrutiny.

  1. Online travel firms makes traveling simple and easy. They offer us thousands of places to go around the world. They give us ratings for each place they offer so that we can explore the options. They also give us a platform for us to rate ourselves and give comments. We can then read other people’s comments and ratings about the place, which we can see and use it to help us to decide. We can also look at pictures of the place, know where the exact location is, and how much it cost (if it is needed to pay for the service). Almost every detail can be found on it. I’m really glad that today we can easily find a place to go in such short time. It really helped me once when I was in india. I had two suitcases and two backpacks, I was all alone, I dont speak their language, and had no idea where I should go because I need to stay for 2 more days in delhi. I used an application to find a hotel and I was able to filter the search according to what I want, the price, the location (within a certain area), and the conditions of the room. Luckily I found one within less than 15 minutes, and was able to go to the location safely.

  2. My family loves traveling. We love going to places without joining tour groups, because we like traveling to places we like without having a time limit or being rushed. That is the reason why my family usually arrange our own itinerary before going to trips. We’d do some research on the internet and take our time planning for the trip. Hence, online travel sites are important to us, especially for reviews. We would see the review rates for tourist destinations and accommodations, read the comments people write as a review, and arrange our itinerary based on those reviews. We would also book our accommodations and tickets online. I think the internet plays an important role in terms of travel and tourism. It gives us a lot of information, even down to addresses and stations, so we could plan the routes for our journey. Traditional hotels and other traditional businesses related to travel should use the internet more as a tool to attract more customers.

  3. So after reading this article I know that the internet plays a big role in the traveling things and stuff, I still remember when online booking was not a common thing in Indonesia and people had to go to the travel agencies to get a hotel room or they had to directly call the hotel to get the information, but now everything is different, almost everything can be done online especially finding a hotel. Interestingly, not only you can find hotels but you can actually see how good they are, their rooms, their services, and nearly everything. These information can be received from many things, usually travel sites would review them or people who have stayed would review it themselves so you can get a picture of how would you fell in that hotel. But still although all of them seems a like a good news for us I think for the hotel that are not connected or using the internet as their marketing strategies I think it would be bad news for them in this era.

  4. I think online travel firms really help us especially people who love travelling.
Calling a Travel Agent for booking your tickets is an obsolete thing now. People have an easy access to the internet and they can browse through the best deals for themselves on the World Wide Web. Online Travel Agency facilitate the customers to book different travel services like Tours, Flights, hotels, Transfers, Sightseeing etc using their Mobile phones (iOS & Android), Laptops and iPad’s. Online travel agent has many benefit, people can explore all of their different options for travel right at one spot. If you are looking for a flight for example, and your route is flexible, users can map out different itineraries online. Then, the user can pick which works best for them and make a decision about what they want to do.
Also, the user gets exposed to options that they may not have thought of before; therefore broadening their horizons of what type of travel arrangements are available to them.

  5. When I was little, me and my parents like to take a trip outside of Sumbawa, Nusa Tenggara Barat where I live back then. When we got to the airport, the only thing that was a pain to think was the registration of the tickets. Not just there, we even sometimes got cut -in line in the hotels buy foreign tourists, because the hotels think that foreigners are more important that locals. But we at least don’t have to worry about being the second one. These online travel firms made a big difference in traveling experience. And with the growth of the firms, service providers grow as well; such as Individual airlines, hotels, bed and breakfasts, cruise lines, automobile rental companies, and other travel-related service providers often maintain their own web sites providing retail sales. And also adding some complex offerings include some sort of search engine technology to look for bookings within a certain timeframe, service class, geographic location, or price range.

  6. I am just so impressed how technology has improved the ways of booking flights and hotels. I still remember when I was a kid and I accompanied my mother to the travel agency for booking our family trip. Meanwhile my mother was negotiating the best flights and hotel with the agent, my brothers and me liked to play in the ground with all the magazines. Now a day, it is so easy to find the best offers and compare it with other competitors. I consider myself an expert in finding the best flight ticket. My advice for you is to always compare days, hours, and trips. Sometimes it is cheaper to buy flights individually and from big airports. For example, for flying to Thailand, it is cheaper to buy a plane ticket from Jakarta to Thailand, instead of Yogyakarta to Jakarta. Additionally, you can buy your ticket from Yogyakarta to Jakarta for a good price; just make sure is the same airport with your other flight. (this happened to me once, and Jakarta traffic is horrible)

  7. Online travel agencies use automated processes to reduce costs and increase profitability, in addition to improving efficiency. Booking travel online can save consumers money, but you need to do your homework first. Before purchasing a travel package online, a consumer should be sure to read all the fine print. A dream vacation might not turn out to be what you are expecting. That’s why you need to know exactly what expenses are included in a package before buying. Frequently, hotel stays and some attractions are the only items included. Even so, the package may still be a good deal, but travellers need to know up front what other expenses will be involved. Consumers should always read reviews about any online travel agencies, from which they are considering purchasing. In many cases, comments made by other people who have purchased travel packages from the company can be read online. Consumers can also find out how a specific company has been rated by others.

  8. When we go travelling, the thing that we arrange first is usually transportation and accommodation. Online travel firms now have helped us to arrange transportation and accommodation. To arrange transportation, most companies have provided us online application to reserve tickets. Nowadays, many applications of online travel firms that can help to choose the accommodation. On most apps, we can easily order our travel tickets and our hotel in one application. This is the example of the modern era. I like to go travelling with my family. To arrange the transportation, we now use online method to order our tickets. To arrange the accommodation, we use the online application for reference. We usually search the strategic hotel or places, the price, ratings, distance to public facilities, etc. Then we would contact the place to ask about the price. After that, we would compare the prices of each places and the method of reserving it. In conclusion, the modern era now has helped us to arrange our trip easier. It is our obligation to use it wisely.

  9. Online booking application is one of the most innovative and creative solution to traveler who need an accommodation for their destination. Back then, we need to call the hotel or even go to the hotel itself to check the availability of the rooms, or book it a long time before we stay there. Transportation tickets and plane tickets are also hard to get back then. We need to go to the airport to buy the tickets and it is so complicated. Nowadays you can just open your application, look for some hotels, and check the room availability. You can even get so many discounts for the cost of the room. Buying the plane or train tickets are also easier as now you can see the cheapest and the available flight right in your hand, in your smartphone. For me and my family, this is extremely helpful because back then we were almost got no place to stay just because all the hotels are full, and we haven’t book any room to stay at that night.

  10. The creation of online travel firm eases people to go and travel around the world. It benefits both the supplier (as in hotels, airlines, transportation rentals) and the customers in terms of simplicity. I can say that online travel firms provide simplicity because your travel is just a “click” away. It benefits the supplier because just by a “click”, your hotel, transportation rentals, and airlines can be generated and should appear if it satisfies the customer’s preference. The benefits provided to the customer and supplier has shown to make this industry very profitable and appealing. Indonesia has their own popular online travel firm called “Traveloka”. Traveloka has been said to become one of Indonesia’s “Unicorn” start-up company. A unicorn start-up company can be determined by their revenue during the years and their popularity. Traveloka has helped many families in planning and booking their travel itineraries, including myself. All in all, I highly recommend all of you to use Traveloka or any other online travel firm to ease your trip!

  11. I think online travel firms have saved up a lot of time, money and energy. By just browsing online, you can discover how your next trip would want to be. Rather than paying another person to set things up for you, my family prefers independent travelling. We can set our own itinerary. The good thing is we don’t have to go in groups, and just travel wherever we want without the pressure of time. We realized by doing so, we get to explore more to places that are not commonly visited by other tourists. Finding information like these are helped by those online travel sites. I would like to credit the Tripadvisor website because it has been a huge life saver for us back in Japa. We did not know any Halal restaurants around, and tripadvisor managed to find that information for us. We also use several booking sites like booking.com, traveloka, and Airbnb so we have lots of reference for the best place to stay, with the best price offered.

  12. Online travel firm has helped lots of people. So far, it has helped me so much on finding the best and cheapest flight ticket. its amazing how technology could bring better and easier days to us. Online booking application are very useful for travelers to know more about their destination and to know which place would comfort them the most. Most of the Online Travel Agency portals are highly instructional, comprehensible website that guarantees the best available prices and also most of the OTA’s are customized the benefits of no Reservation costs, no booking fees, free cancellation and also instant confirmation.

Transportation and accommodation aren’t something we have to think much anymore. Long time ago, when people want to go abroad to travel, they tend wait for mouth to mouth feedbacks and recommendations. Now, we could just probably go to our nearest gadget and type about whatever to know the details about a destination. All in all, thanks to the one who started the trend and the idea of OTA, Internet Travel Network (ITN). ITN was the first platform of OTA.

  13. I think the online based booking for hotels, flights, and trains are very much helpful in this era. It simplify your travel preparations and helps you decide which flights and hotels suits with the budget you have. We no longer have to go to airports or travel agents to book a flight or having to call the hotel's receptionists to book a room in the hotel, imagine how many phone lines are calling the same number at the exact same time. I think my favourite app is Traveloka and tiket.com. Both are equally as good as the other one is but Traveloka has a bit more options that tiket.com doesn't have such as buses and shuttles, bills, and eats (popular and recommended restaurants). The travel app doesn't only help families in planning trips and holidays, but also firms and companies especially multinational ones to help them book last-minute flights and hotels for meetings and such.

  14. The presence of startups that establish online travel firms is gradually increasing due to popular demand. Thanks to the development of technology, you can plan a trip anywhere around the world through your smartphone. In the past, people would actually go to travel agents in order to book a flight. Now, Traveloka is just a click away and I can buy a flight ticket easily. I remember before booking trips online are popular, my mother would take me to travel agents in order to plan a trip which is time-consuming, and much more expensive since they would mark up the price pretty high. By ordering everything online, the choices are unlimited; from your flights, tours, as well the finding the perfect accommodation that fits your budget. I once tried to find a tour to the US that includes your flight ticket and tour for two weeks, and the price is Rp 50 million per pax, whereas by booking a local tour in the US and ordering your flight online, everything will only cost you half the price. Hence, I would encourage anyone who would like to go on a vacation to arrange your own holiday or find everything online since it is much cheaper compared to offline travel firms.

  15. I think online travel firms have really helped my family in arranging our family vacation. We would usually book everything online, from flights to our accommodations. The site that I used frequently to book flights and hotels is traveloka.com. The site provides ample of choices of flights and hotel with the cheapest price. My family really cares about promos and discounts, so Traveloka.com helps us a lot in getting the most affordable price. Recently, I found out about the existence of skyscanner.net. This site allows you to search when is the cheapest price for the route you choose. So, instead of inserting the exact date of your travel, you let the site choose the cheapest time period. It would be really beneficial for those who can travel at any time. I, personally, haven't tried using this site yet so I don’t have any personal experience. I found out about this site through my favorite travel blogger (shutupandgo.travel) so the site should be credible!

  16. Online travel firms has helped me a lot when travelling. It has made travelling easier for me and my family or friends. With how advanced our technology has become, there are now so many different online travel firms we can choose from. All of them really helps save our time and our money as well. It’s very easy to use and the prices are always a lot cheaper. When purchasing airplane tickets, I usually use tiket.com or Skyscanner, since they have the best deals and promotions. But for hotels or villas to stay, I would use either Traveloka or Pegipegi. Both of these applications really help when you are not sure which place you should stay at. They provide a way for us to see which hotels are close to our destination. For example, when my dad visited me in Jogja, he searched for a hotel near Malioboro and Traveloka gave him so many different choices and he can also see the distance from each. It makes his search easier and with just a click away, he got to stay at the hotel that is just right for him.

  17. Due to the era where we live in, the digitalised and modernised era almost every day activities are assisted by technology and internet. In this case we talk about traveling, me personally travelled 3 times from Jogja to Bandung by train and most of the purchasing transaction I did it via traveling companion app. This kind of apps where they gives us suggestion on what transportation in a given price that might benefit us, and also suggestion about where to stay can help us to find the transportation and where to stay. But it is not only a mock review of a place or transportation, they also gives us section where we can review our trip which will help other travelers to know is it the best way to travel or not, basically this kind of apps or websites are public sourced where people can input their own review and rate the choices based on their experience to help the provider of the app or website final review about each and every choices they offer.

  18. Technology, whether we like it or not has changed the way our world works. Things are now a lot more convenient and easier. Even myself still can’t get over the fact that with a click of a button, you can have a car pick you up, booking a flight ticket or hotel room. When it comes to traveling, technology has improved so many aspects of it by ten fold. Imagine traveling with no access to google maps, flight booking systems, hotel booking platforms, or even something as basic as not being able to read information on blogs and websites. Online travel firms also made time more efficient. For most people, time is the most valuable thing. It is the only thing that we can never get back. Booking a flight ticket or hotel room now can be done just by doing a few clicks without having to go to the hotel or offline travel agency.

  19. In my opinion, Online Travel Agent or OTA make chose and booked hotel or accommodation easier. In the past maybe we have to go and find yourself a hotel to sleep and maybe we end up have to go around the city to find hotel that still available. Sometimes we end up in a hotel that does not meet our expectation, for example dirty bathroom, bad Wi-Fi connection, etc. By searching and booking with online travel agent, such as traveloka, booking.com, expedia, tripadvisor, etc, make us more prepared for the trip and also we can know the condition of the hotel from other guest reviews. As mentioned on the article, it will be easier for us to find the best rate by searching from one website to another. Sometimes it will be cheaper if we use booking.com and on another time traveloka will be cheaper; to make their user booked a hotel from their website again they make a lot of deal or voucher.

  20. Wow, traveling, this is completely my family’s hobby. They always have this dream of a moment where they will be traveling to discover almost all of the edge of Indonesia from Sabang until Merauke. To be Honest Online traveling has to help me and my family a lot, it opens up a whole lot of possibilities and making us the user much easier to search for tickets and much easier to look for cheap tickets. what makes me, even more, amaze and satisfied about this online traveling firm is that they also offer a various form of transportation that we can choose, like for example Airy, Booking.com, Agoda, Pegi Pegi, Traveloka, and other. Besides transportation, they also offer also places to stay, by means they can also book us a hotel to sleep in, and include each hotels rating and review so that we can know exactly and accurately determine our hotels.
