A hologram of Amy Winehouse is set for a worldwide tour in 2019. A projection of the late singer will “perform” digitally remastered arrangements of her songs, backed by a live band, singers and what the production company Base Hologram calls “theatrical stagecraft”.
Winehouse’s father, Mitch, described the endeavour as a dream. “To see her perform again is something special that really can’t be put into words,” he said. “Our daughter’s music touched the lives of millions of people and it means everything that her legacy will continue in this innovative and groundbreaking way.”
Mitch Winehouse said the tour will raise money and awareness for the Amy Winehouse Foundation. The charity educates young people about drug and alcohol misuse, provides support for those at risk and supports the development of disadvantaged young people through music.
The show is expected to last 75 to 110 minutes.

The Winehouse tour is Base Hologram’s third such project. Productions featuring Roy Orbison and the opera singer Maria Callas are currently playing. Since 2012, when a hologram of Tupac appeared at the Coachella festival in California, the technology has become increasingly common.
A hologram of Billie Holliday performs daily 40-minute shows at the Hologram USA Theater in Los Angeles. A similar tour featuring the likeness of Whitney Houston was scrapped in 2017 after her estate said the technology was not ready. Other tours are planned featuring the metal musician Ronnie James Dio and Frank Zappa.
Abba have said they will use the technology as part of a new “virtual experience” expected to debut next year. Abba’s Benny Andersson said in 2016: “We’re inspired by the limitless possibilities of what the future holds and are loving being a part of creating something new and dramatic here. A time machine that captures the essence of who we were. And are.”
Winehouse’s last performance was at the Tuborg festival in Belgrade on 18 June 2011. The chaotic set, in which Winehouse slurred lyrics and forgot the names of her band members, led to the cancellation of a European tour. She was found dead at her home in Camden, north London, on 23 July 2011.
A new documentary, Amy Winehouse – Back to Black, will be released in November. It includes “previously unseen footage of Amy” and new interviews with her collaborators Mark Ronson and Salaam Remi.
Having the possibility to see an artist perform again is truly impressive technology speaking and could be an incredible experience. I really appreciate Amy Winehouse, but I never had the chance to see her perform live, and I would love to be able to go to one her concert, and this could be almost possible with this technology; however It may raise ethical question, to what extended is it morally right to create artificially a new performance of someone who passed away ? it can be perceived to disrespectful to family members or close friends; It’s Amy Winehouse’s dad who is in charge of the project, but the relationship between the twos was not known to be ideal. Some people might see this project as just a way to make more money and doesn’t really suit with the style that Amy Winehouse tried to embody and represent.
ReplyDeleteThis technology could be great to enhance performance of artist and create visual effect instead.
Amy Jade Winehouse (14 September 1983 – 23 July 2011) was an English singer and songwriter. She was known for her deep, expressive contralto vocals and her eclectic mix of musical genres, including soul, rhythm and blues, and jazz. Winehouse was found dead in her home on 23, July 2011 with her cause of death being alcohol poisoning. She is known as one of the 'main members' of the 27 Club, a list of musicians who died when they were 27. She will be the source of a projection that will perform digitally remastered versions of her most famous songs accompanied by a live band and backing singers. The show will reportedly last for up to 110 minutes. Speaking about the news, her father, Mitch, said: “To see her perform again is something special that really can’t be put into words. Our daughter’s music touched the lives of millions of people, and it means everything that her legacy will continue in this innovative and groundbreaking way.”The tour will raise money and awareness for the Amy Winehouse Foundation, a charity which educates young people about drug and alcohol misuse. Winehouse died from alcohol poisoning in July 2011. The charity also aids the development of disadvantaged youngsters through music.
ReplyDeleteAmy Winehouse was a popular singer during the 2000's. "Valerie" and "Back to Black" were two of my favorite songs growing up. Her genre of music is a compilation and mixture of several genres, such as pop, blues, classic rock, and funk, and many more. Amy had the ability to be a versatile and flexible vocalist, due to her having a range of musical genres and sounding great in every each one of it. Amy's breakthrough comes at 2003 when she released her debut album,Frank, which was a commercial and critical success, domestically in the UK and globally around the world. The album's title alludes to the nature of Winehouse's tone, lyrics of the songs featured in the album, and one of her inspirations on her musical career, the legendary Frank Sinatra. For a 20 year old, this was quite an achievement, due to the fact that not many musicians were famous at that age during that time.
ReplyDeleteAmy Winehouse's career continue to flourish, with her winning many awards during the extend of her career, such as the 2008 Grammy Awards where she won 5 awards for the album "Back to Black", making her the first British female musician to win 5 Grammys and tying the then record for the most wins by a female artist in a single night. Amy's career continue to grow spectacularly, that is all until she was found deceased in her home on 23 July 2011 with alcohol poisoning being the cause of death. Her fans and critics alike were all shocked. How come a successful and growing artist could end her life like that ? Well she's not the first and she's definitely not the last, with entertainers such as Heath Ledger in 2008 and Cory Monteith in 2013 dying in the same or similar manor as Winehouse. This create a concern for substance abuse for the people, and so many organizations build on the foundation of this concern were established at the aftermath of this unfortunate event. Her family created the "Amy Winehouse Foundation", build to support, inform and inspire vulnerable and disadvantaged young people to help them reach their full potential.
DeleteIt has been years since Amy Winehouse passed away, and her fans, nor critics alike have moved on from her death. Although it has been years since her death, a lot of people are still listening and demanding covers of her music. Most recently, there has been an announcement from Amy's father that there will be an Amy Winehouse hologram world tour in the upcoming year 2019. This remarkable news has for sure instigated excitement from fans around the world. Personally, I believe that people would still enjoy her music and the sensation of her embodiment being there onstage, but until the moment they remember that she has passed away, the feeling of her authenticity and the picture of great aesthetic pleasure could all go away with a hint of memory.
DeleteShe alone was different. She made all labels insignificant, as lables always are. Realness and authenticity were hers to carry, every word she sang, every movement she made. Such a young soul. And brave. The bravery was the genius. May she find peace.
This article can’t help but to remind me of movies like AKIRA (1988) and Blade Runner (1982) where city skylines are depicted with huge holograms lighting up it’s skyline. When I saw those movies for the first time, it was also the moment that I can’t wait until holograms was a technology that was common to see and use. Even though I know that it’s not actually a 3D projection like the movies depicted I still get excited because it’s still a step closer and also because of the fact I was such a fan-boy of the hologram technology. That’s why It’s always a good news when I see late performers getting the hologram treatment. I saw how the Tupac hologram performed and was actually really surprised on how seamless it was to performed and rapped the same way Tupac did back in the day. I’m not really a fan of Amy Winehouse but I knew that she was a very talented singer, and I hope this tour will make her music lives longer.
ReplyDeleteAmy Winehouse was an amazing artist and loved worldwide, but unfortunately didn’t have enough time to perform for all of them. This hologram tour is a great way to pay tribute to the late singer and allow her fans to reminisce her and her music, as she would have wanted to be remembered by. It gives the opportunity for her family members and fans whom hadn’t been able to watch her perform live to help get over their grief. This trend of holographic concerts can also help pass on Amy’s (as well as other late singers) music career to the younger generation in the way that 2D videos and their songs can’t. the kids of today will be able to experience and enjoy her music in a similar way their parents did when they had watched her in concert. But despite the heartwarming aspects of it all, there is still one concern regarding holographic concerts. How far can technology replicate Amy Winehouse’s stage presence and personal acts she had in her performances? Will fans be able to view her holograph the same way her father does?
ReplyDeleteThe implementation of such technology in order for people to finally watch Amy Winehouse again speaks volumes on how talented she was as an artist, putting her on the same bracket as Michael Jackson, for instance. I am a fan of Amy Winehouse myself, with her first album, titled Frank, as my personal favourite of her. Who would not love to hear her distinctive contralto voice again? Amy Winehouse’s considerably low vocal range gave her a career in a jazz-soul music market, and she earned quite a few cult following for her eccentricity on and off the stage. Maybe with that kind of technology, we might as well “bring back“ the likes of Wes Montgomery, Ella Fitzgerald, Antonio Carlos Jobim, and other musicians that deserved to be given that kind of posthumous respect. I would pay actual money to watch the “revival” of the legends. This is the kind of technological advancement that I would not mind seeing.
ReplyDeleteAmy Winehouse is I think might become the next Ella Fitzgerald of jazz but unfortunately she died just at the aged of 27 which was a great loss for the Jazz world. I am a big fan of Amy Winehouse, her voice was so unique and the way she performed was none like other. Tony Bennett once said that he was shocked and amazed by Amy's voice and decided that they had to record a track together for Tony's album "Duet". Amy's songs such as "Valerie", " Back to black", and "Rehab" is I think a few of the best Jazz songs in the modern era. To hear that there will be a hologram concert of Amy Winehouse is I think a great idea because her legacy should be preserved in an appropriate way like this so that more people will know Amy Winehouse and her songs through this concert.
ReplyDeleteI have always liked Amy Winehouse. Her unique feature, taste, and appearance attracted me. Unfortunately, she was found dead on 23, July 2011 at her home. The cause of her death is being poisoned by alcohol. Seeing this news, excites me because we can see that technology has definitely brought the world into whole new different level. Seeing Amy Winehouse again even though only from the digital feature will really excites her fans all around the world. i am also sure that the digital technology that will play Amy Winehouse’s concert will be amazing since it will be taken care seriously and will consists of high technologies. We will not only watch Amy Winehouse’s amazing performance but also will be amazed by the amazing technology that is different from the usual. Maybe for the ethical condition, the promotor should ask permission to Amy Winehouse’s family so that it will not make any problem with the permissions.
ReplyDeleteAll I can say, the future does give many opportunities for everything. In this case, technology seems to have no limitation in performing their best. The idea of having a hologram of Amy Winehouse to perform as a concert may be creepy, however, the aim to raise money and awareness for the Amy Winehouse foundation is very noble. I have to agree with the fact that Amy’s songs have touched many lives of people and what’s left of her; her legacy should be celebrated. I am one of the people that adore her music. I believe that her life journey through drug and alcohol misuse tells an important story for people, especially teenagers, out there. Therefore, despite the idea being creepy, it is an innovative breakthrough in bringing an important message to the community. It is also an interesting thing to try for people who love to watch concerts. As Tupac’s holographic concert was actualized in Coachella, there should be nothing wrong to have Amy Winehouse’s performing again on stage though in a holographic form.
ReplyDeleteEven though I don’t exactly know who Amy Winehouse is nor have I ever heard her songs, I do think that this is a brilliant usage of technology. While some people might think that seeing a concert performed by a hologram is weird, there’s actually lots of real examples that this kind of concert had happened before. It is still arguable that it won’t be the same experience as watching a real live concert being performed live artist, but not the same experience won’t necessarily mean that it will also be less enjoyable. The concert will be backed by a live band which gives it a little touch of “live” performance. This is a really great chance for her friends, family, and fans to see her in action once again. Not to mention some of her fans might have never been to any of her concerts before. The other purpose of holding the concert itself is also to raise money and awareness for the Amy Winehouse foundation. The charity is meant to educate people about drug and alcohol misuse which is a common problem nowadays. I'm looking forward to hear about other similar concerts that also contributes to the well being of society.
ReplyDeleteTechnology has once again prove it's advance in digital performing arts. The idea to bring back and re-live the moments on stage of Amy Winehouse as a way to appreciate and honor her career in the music industry is a beautiful and noble thing to do. I have never been the person to idolize someone so much that I would spend thousands of dollars just to see them. For me it's just not worth it. Having to spend a lot of money just for a few hours or even minutes - in a meet and greet - to see or meet my idol. But again, I have nothing against people who would spent that much money just to see their idol, maybe their idol meant so much to them, maybe their work saved their lives in some ways. I just never met or found an artist or a singer that I idolize that much. But considering this concert is for a good cause and as long as it doesn't bring harm to anyone, I say go for it.
ReplyDeleteI don’t know why but this thing makes me a little bit sad. I don’t think that this kind of thing is respectful towards someone who’s already passed away. Maybe it is better if we leave it and commemorate it with any other thing or event that more giving that person a respect. Maybe it’s quite odd but in my opinion its just like awakened a dead spirits just to entertain us, but it’s just my first reaction seeing this news. But in a technological point of view, this is really really amazing. We can see our long long passed away idol or our favorite musician in real life. I mean despites of wheter it just a holographic things or not, we can have the same euphoria and feel just like the old days people do. Everything has a good and bad sides, for me, I need sometimes to digest this idea and maybe deciding if it suites me or not. Maybe this is some kind of giving a respect but I’m not seeing it in that way yet. It makes me think that every thing can be made up aka artificial and it makes me quite uncomfortable. I genuinely amazed of how can people make this realization happened in a real life. Maybe we can use this technology in any other aspect in our life. Maybe in the industry, we can actually generates our own hologram and having a meeting so the meeting feel like it is happened nearby, make the meeting more effective and so on just like a thing that would happens in many many spies movie. In a technological aspect, I amazed of how we achieve these days and I really curious of what thing can be happen in the future. Maybe we can eventually awakened the dead body.
ReplyDeleteTo be honest I have never heard the name Amy Winehouse before, but I can tell that once again technology has advance to next level once more. Though I think this is not the first time there’s concert that shows a hologram of a dead singer or artist. Maybe some people will think that this is a brilliant idea because at least they can see their idol alive again but some other people will think is a harassment to their idol because they think that the dead should be dead and bringing them back to life is a harassment to them. But personally I think this is a great idea too show not just the singer but the progress technology have reached until now. This technology later can not only show in some special cases but maybe in our daily life like in a call so they can see the full body rather than just a face in a screen. - Dimasbitel (DImas Aditya Permana)
ReplyDeleteA concert that use holographic singer is not something new in the technology world. This kind of concert already exists for many years and already has many fans. One of the most well-known singer that fully holographic are Hatsune Miku from japan. The premise are basically same, a holographic singer sing the song backed by a live band. This is become a hit in Japan, selling a lot of merchandise and still growing fan base. The only different are Hatsune Miku concert has a fictional holographic lead singer while the concert from the article using singer that already died. For some people it’s a bit creepy since basically we see a ghost of dead people created by technology. When we think as a fan that never meet the our favorite singer in a live concert but the singer already dead, this kind of concert is a great way to enjoy some of the feeling of seeing a live concert and certainly there will be people that happily provide it as long ther is demand for it.
ReplyDeleteI see it as a technological advancement in the world. If you told people 20 years ago that we have millions of people watch a concert made entirely out of digital sounds, they might think you're crazy. The same goes here, we may see holograms of artists performing to be unorthodox but it may be the next step in the music evolution. However, since it is a dead artist being used for the hologram, it might be difficult for some to accept. I can't imagine seeing someone whom I know has already died, go on stage and perform again. Other than that, what about the legal issues? How do you get consent of a dead person? So in conclusion hologram performances are awesome and will be the next step in the musical evolution, however using a dead artist as the hologram is just plain wrong.
ReplyDeleteFor fans and admirer of Amy Wine house this holographic performance tour would be a great relieve for the longing for her presence. And it has been done before to the late Tupac Shakur. In my personal opinion, it would be incredible for us to see deceased performers comes back to life. I would love to have more of this type of performance. On the other hand the emergence of this type of performance mark a new chapter for the entertainment industry, the dawn of holographic era. I am thrilled to wait what life performance would be like within the next decade. I would say that this type of holographic technology is particularly incredible if implemented in the field of theatre; rather than making intricate props, we can just use hologram to produce more awe bringing moments. After the use hologram in performances, I would say we would find more practical application for this technology.
ReplyDeleteI believe that it is going to be a great idea to have hologram concerts of late singers. This technological advancement will definitely bring positive outcomes to both the artists and audiences, not forgetting the third party which literally provides all the necessary tools and technologies in making the whole hologram phenomena a reality. As hologram concerts become more and more common as the number businesses specialised in creating holograms also accumulate, the number of countries in which famous singers can virtually attend to will definitely skyrocket, as the advent of technology will also compensate the extensive spread of musical concerts all around the world. As more hologram businesses enter the market, they will compete with those other companies to create holograms with qualities better than the previous one. Eventually, such competition will eventually bring further technological improvements that are going to lift humanity to a futuristic age many people from our earlier generations might have dreamed of during their lifetimes. Who knows, perhaps holograms might one day replace phones as means of communication; just like in Star Wars.
ReplyDeleteThis phenomenon can be seen as the recent progress of our technology. I can see this as an opportunity to set a benchmark for the technologies that are used in every industry. Bringing a "dead" artist into life by using a hologram is a breakthrough. as a kid, I would dream of seeing holograms of people everywhere, just like sci-fi movies. I would not even have a visualization of holograms actually existing in our real-life world. Suddenly, I read this post by Mr. Adrian. Other than this post, around 2 weeks ago my friend visited a LED expo in China. He told me that now people are trying to make hologram projectors. Since my friend and I are trying to enter the advertising industry, we did a simple discussion on holographic projectors. We concluded that this holographic projector can become the new innovation in the advertising industry. It is more efficient in terms of space than billboards and Videotron, and it is also more attractive for consumers of a product to look at high-tech advertising strategies. In other words, My faith in humanity is restored, because this shows that even dreams can be made into reality by us.
ReplyDeleteI don't think this is as weird as people think, on the contrary I thought people would see this coming from a mile away. These sort of things were imagined by people in the 70s and only now do we have access to the technology to make it happen. This is what the future looks like, and although some people might think that it is insensitive to the individual I think this could make sure that their work are written down in the history books and make them be remembered forever. 30 years ago people wouldn't dream of paying to see a concert with non-instrumental music, today Tomorrowland is one of the biggest music festivals in the world and it only features artists who make music through their computer screens. So although it might take a while to get used to, these sorts of things might be a common thing in the future.
ReplyDeleteAmy Winehouse is very popular in the 00’s. I’m not really a fan of Amy Winehouse, but I know one or two of her songs. She is very talented and what I like about her is that she has her own signature. She is famous for her unique retro looks such as her big hair. Honestly, I think that holograms are a new innovative technology that might be used in the future for a lot of purposes. However, a hologram of a late artist is a bit creepy even though the main goal is to reminisce the artist. But I also think the tour is a great idea because the target is to raise money and awareness for the Amy Winehouse foundation. I personally would not go to a hologram tour, but I might go just out of curiosity. There is actually nothing wrong with hologram tours. Nonetheless, some people might have different point of views on it.
ReplyDeleteAmy Winehouse inarguably one of the most iconic female singer well-known in this world. Even though she already passed away, her existence in the musical world still apparent even in today’s generation. Her iconic songs such as “Rehab” and “Back to Black” make her existence in the past stick in our memories even until today. Not only because of the song that she sang, it is also because of her unique voice that full of character which distinguished her with other female singer. Due to the fact she was and always will be remembered, showing the hologram of her as a symbol of commemoration of one of iconic female singer that left a mark in musical world through her songs and also her unique, beautiful voice. Other than as a commemoration it also can be a way for us who missed the voice and stage performance of Amy Winehouse to have a nostalgic moment by seeing the hologram of her performing on stage in 2019 world tour.
ReplyDeleteI grew up listening to music mainly from the 70’s and 80’s but my parents started to play soul music during my elementary school years. I remembered the time when I was 5 or 6 and on my way to school, my dad played Amy Winehouse’s ‘Back To Black’ album and it caught my attention as it’s my first time listening to her songs. At first, being used to Bee Gees’ three-part tight harmony, then listening to Winehouse’s powerful and expressive contralto virtuoso weirded me out. However as I grew up and had developed my own taste of music, it made me realize that her voice was actually unique, sensitive and somehow heart-breaking at the same time. Not just her music, appearance-wise, I could definitely say that she’s the only one who rocked that beehive from the 60’s. She wasn't into wearing the latest trends but certainly had a style that was all her own. I love how different she wrote and conveyed her romantic songs.
ReplyDelete“I am a very romantic person. I don't mean romantic in a flowers and chocolates kind of way. It's more like if it's raining, I'll go up to the window and press my nose against the glass and sigh at how beautiful it all looks."
Although it may be hard for some people to picture this image, she doesn’t give a hoot and kept being the honest and unguarded person she was. I think this woman-crush personality of hers, not to keep in view her self-destructive habits, has built her an empire of loyal fan worship, wanting to keep the memory of her performances alive even though it’s just her hologram.
Amy Winehouse was a very good singer and a good role model. However, I have to say that she is not the kind of woman that always do everything nicely, but she is responsible for what she does. She produces excellent music that can be aspiring for people in this world that wants to compose music in their lifetime. I was disheartened when I heard that she was found dead at her home back in the 2011. She died due to poisoning from excessive alcohol consumption. Although I am not a big fan of Amy Winehouse, this was tragic to hear. The news, all her fans worldwide and family were in a big loss. Surprisingly, after reading this article, this excited me because this will be Amy Winehouse’s fans dream of seeing her again and hearing her songs again. The technology involved in play is also advanced which will probably take this concert into a whole new level and different atmosphere.
ReplyDeleteI interested on how technology developed, we now can watch someone perform on stage even though the singer actually not there or can’t be there. This technology can advantage the family of the late singer, his or her fans, and a lot of people. I find it interesting that the profit from this hologram concert of Amy Winehouse will go to Amy Winehouse foundation. Which the foundation focused on prevent the effect of drugs and alcohol misuse on young people. By this concert, they can raise money and also raise awareness about drugs and alcohol misuse to people through music. Raising awareness doesn’t have to be from speech, educational events or distributing posters. Music can be an alternative way to raising awareness of the effect of drugs and alcohol misuse on young people, as we know that young people are more interested on concert than educational events that seem to be boring.
ReplyDeleteAmy Winehouse is a legendary singer. Her song titled “Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow?” is one of my favorite songs. Beside her amazing talent to sing, a lot of people also admire her due to her ability on expressing herself and showing her real personality to the world. Her death is a devastating news for people around the world and they try to express their feelings through various ways. In addition, they also find other ways to reminiscing her works, one of the ways is through the hologram concert. The concert serve a virtual experience in which they visualize the present of Amy Winehouse on stage. Personally, I find this idea to be very creative and mesmerizing as we can experience watching Amy performing our favorite songs. The hologram concert also considered to be a tribute for her amazing works that have inspired a lot of people and continuously to do so.
ReplyDeleteAmy Winehouse is a well know singer. She has a lot of fans and also pretty succesful in her career. Sadly, when her career seems good and risen, she was found dead in her home on July 23rd, 2011 with her cause of death being alcohol poisoning. She is known as one of the main members of the 27 Club, a list of musicians who died when they were 27. The dead of Amy Winehouse was totally a heartbreaking memories for her fans and family. However, according to this article, a promotor wants to make a tribute for Amy Winehouse by making a live concert of her but playing with videos of her and holograms. The idea of hologram excites me because I know that it would be cool to watch a concert with such technology. The combination of music and technology will be a good entertainment for the viewers.
