Four Songs No.3

If you fancy it, listen to the three songs in this pack and offer a review of your favourite one (or as many as you want). Do some research and find a bit of biographical information about the band or the artist to make your review journalistic rather than just a personal response. Here is the third pack of three...

Caecille Norby - Life On Mars

It's a god-awful small affair
To the girl with the mousy hair
But her mummy is yelling "No"
And her daddy has told her to go

But her friend is nowhere to be seen
Now she walks through her sunken dream
To the seat with the clearest view
And she's hooked to the silver screen

But the film is a saddening bore
For she's lived it ten times or more
She could spit in the eyes of fools
As they ask her to focus on

Sailors fighting in the dance hall
Oh man! Look at those cavemen go
It's the freakiest show
Take a look at the Lawman
Beating up the wrong guy
Oh man! Wonder if he'll ever know
He's in the best selling show
Is there life on Mars?

It's on America's tortured brow
That Mickey Mouse has grown up a cow
Now the workers have struck for fame
'Cause Lennon's on sale again
See the mice in their million hordes
From Ibiza to the Norfolk Broads
Rule Britannia is out of bounds
To my mother, my dog, and clowns
But the film is a saddening bore
'Cause I wrote it ten times or more
It's about to be writ again
As I ask you to focus on

Sailors fighting in the dance hall
Oh man! Look at those cavemen go
It's the freakiest show
Take a look at the Lawman
Beating up the wrong guy
Oh man! Wonder if he'll ever know
He's in the best selling show
Is there life on Mars?

Colin Hay - My Brilliant Feat

Did someone call my name?
Like a distant drum is beating
Or is it just another dream of long ago?
I dance again, I am spinning
In the light, I am living
And I can feel the power rushing through my veins
Once upon a time I could do no wrong
For the candle flickers, the flame is never gone

To my brilliant feat
They all pay heed
I hear the crowds roar oh so loudly

Is it a game of chance
Or merely circumstances
A jack to a king and back
Then you have to pay to play
The world it won't wait for you
It's got its own things to do
The sun's gotta rise and drive another night away
And as I listen to the silence
I can hear thunder in the distance

To my brilliant feat
I make grown men weep
And still my eyes grow oh so cloudy

Another performance...

He explains at the beginning that it's about George Best (see HERE)

Patti Smith - Summer Cannibals

I was down in Georgia
Nothing was as real
As the street beneath mu feet
Descending into air
The cauldron was a'bubbling
The flesh was lean
And the women moved forward
Like piranhas in a stream
They spread themselves before me
An offering so sweet
And they beckoned[x2]
Come on darling eat

[Chorus :]
Eat the summer cannibals
Eat eat eat
You eat the summer cannibals
Eat eat eat

They circled around me
Natives in a ring
And I saw their souls a'withering
Like snakes in chains
And they wrapped themselves around me
Ummm what a treat
And they rattled their tales
Hissing come on let's eat

[Chorus]

I felt a rising in my throat
The girls a'saying grace
And the air the vicious air
Pressed against my face
And it all got too damn much for me
Just got too damn rough
And I pushed away my plate
And said boys I've had enough
And I laid upon the table
Just another piece of meat
And I opened up my veins to them
And said come on eat

[Chorus]

[Outro:]
I was down in Georgia
Nothing was as real
As the street beneath mu feet
Descending into hell
So eat eat eat
Eat eat eat

Dresden Dolls - Backstabber
(this video is a little bit rude - watch it at your own risk - I do not endorse it officially)

the record goes from blue to gold
so thank you for all your help
I know you want to jump around
but try to contain yourself
you always struck me as the type to take it lightly
but now you’re gonna have to shut your mouth or fight me…

backstabber, backstabber….

you’re all alone you’re all over
the popular magazines will never care what do you care
you’re down with the Japanese
but you’ve got no right to sit there saying I abuse it
when you only sleep with girls who say they like your music

backstabber backstabber backstabber backstabber
backstabber backstabber backstabber backstabber

backstabber! hope grabber!
greedy little fit haver!
god, I feel for you, fool…..
s**t lover! off brusher!
jaded bitter joy crusher!
failure has made you so cruel….

rotten to the core
rotten to the core

rotten like a crackwhore
backing out out the backdoor
show us what you’re good for
stick it to the noise board
come on join the bloodsport
show us some support, still
working at the drugstore
is it because you’re A F****ING
backstabber! hope grabber!
greedy little fit haver!
god, I feel for you, fool…..
s**t lover! off brusher!
jaded bitter joy crusher!
failure has made you so cruel….

so don’t tell me what to write
and don’t tell me that I’m wrong……
and don’t tell me not to reference my songs within my songs

so here we go the open road
is covered with taco stands
and you can stop we’ll drop you off
and write to you when we land

BACKSTABBER!

  1. In this third article about songs, I would like to review Summer Cannibals song by Patti Smith. Summer Cannibals is a rock song written by Patti Smith and Fred “Sonic” Smith. Both of them were a couple. But, Fred “Sonic” Smith had passed away on 4th November 1994 in Detroit was caused by heart failure. Patti Smith is an American singer-songwriter, poet, and visual artist who became an influential component of the New York City punk rock movement with her 1975 debut album Horses. Some people called her “punk poet laureate” because she fused rock and poetry in their work. Patti Smith told that this song was written by her husband, and this song has a meaning if fame and fortune will turn on you. Like, if your work just to search fame or fortune, you are destructing yourself like the experience when the writer was younger. It’s not about the unhappy ending, but it’s a survival song. First, when I saw the title of the song, I can’t find the meaning, because for me the title is too abstract to understand. Then, I tried to find the meaning by listen to the music and read the lyrics. In the second stanza when it talks about a snake, I could understand that the song is about a warning to be careful about fame and fortune because it can make you fall to pieces.

When "Summer Cannibals" came out, I remember someone commenting that it might be Patti Smith's answer to Don Henley's "Boys Of Summer". It's an interesting idea but it's different from the interpretation that you have discussed.

  2. I was really surprised to find out that one of the songs above is really my cup of tea! I thought I would not like any of the songs this much and I turned out wrong. I really like “My Brilliant Feet” by Colin Hay. Although I mere listen to this song today and have not understand the meaning of this song yet, I will surely put this song to my playlist. I really like the country feeling this song gives me and how Colin Hay’s voice is just so calming. But, I think the verse’s diction is a little unfamiliar for me. Aside of that, I really love this one and the music’s tone. Surprisingly, I have been replaying this song for more than ten times since I first opened this article. Thanks Mr. Adrian for introducing me to this unique and lovely song! I might have to check out Colin Hay’s other songs after this.

    1. It's about George Best. He was a brilliant footballer in the 60s and 70s. If he had played at World Cups, he might now be as famous as Pele, Maradonna, Ronaldo etc. But he played for Northern Ireland who had no chance of qualifying for the World Cup in those days. His life ended sadly. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Best

  3. I have fallen in love with song titled Life on Mars for years ago. It originally sang by David Bowie with his famous art rock genre. But when I first discovered this song was through an American tv series which called American Horror Story. This song was performed beautifully in the fourth-season finale by Jessica Lange, an exceptionally talented senior artist who played a character named Mars in the series. In this article, I can't believe that this song is also as delightful as the original when sung by Caecillie Norby with her jazz style. It's so calming and relaxing. Whereas the original has many musical instruments, which I prefer by the way, Norby's version is more soothing with her gentle voice. The main reason why I love this song is because the song is playable in every kind of moment, but mainly is when you are in the gloomy side of the wheel. If you read the lyrics carefully, you will recognize an extremely deep meaning of the song, even if it has the strangest lyrics you will ever read. Also, quoting David Bowie himself, "You fall in love, you write a love song. This is a love song."

  4. Whoa, I like the first song. Therefore, I wouldn’t mind doing some research about the first song. "Life on Mars?", also known as "(Is There) Life on Mars?", is a song by David Bowie, first released in 1971 on the album Hunky Dory and also released as a single. When released as a single in 1973, "Life on Mars?" reached number three in the UK Singles Chart and stayed on the chart for thirteen weeks. When released as a single in 1973, it reached no. 3 in the UK and stayed on the chart for thirteen weeks. The song re-entered the UK charts at no. 55 over 30 years later, largely because of its use in the original British television series Life on Mars. It also belatedly became a top 10 hit in France in 2013. In June 2015, Neil McCormick of The Daily Telegraph ranked "Life on Mars?" as no. 1 in his "100 Greatest Songs of All Time" list. In a 2012 poll, "Life on Mars?" was voted Bowie's best song. Digital Spy, who conducted the poll, stated it has "perhaps become David's signature song – filled with surreal cut-up lyrics inspired by William Burroughs, it married vivid imagery with a tender, heartbreaking melody”.

  5. Azani and Vio, the David Bowie version of this song is one of the most significant songs of my childhood and teens. It came out when I was about 9 or 10 years old which was when I was starting to develop my deep interest in music (which I still have today). For me, the lyrics evoke Britain in the 1970s perfectly and also there is some angst or confusion in them that appeal to a teenager who is looking at the world around them. Whenever I hear David Bowie's version of this song, I am transported back to those years and I see the country I grew up in through the prism that his lyrics create.

  6. Firstly, I want to thank Mr Adrian for sharing his music playlist. Here, I want to give some of my thoughts and comment about the first song which titled as “Life on Mars” by Caecille Norby. I can say that this song is not really heavy if you are not really listening. But if you do, you will realise that in the middle of the song there will be some unusual tone and it is pretty cool. The instruments support her voice really well. In the lyrics, the words that are chosen is not easy to be understood. Some sentences are expression but I could not easily guess the meaning of this song. Also the music video does not really give any sign of the message, but I like the way they play their role on the music video (the man with his instrument and the woman singing). Simple but beautiful.

  7. Hello again, I know, I have posted my comment in this article, but that was about the song called “Love on Mars” by Caecilie Norby. This time, I wanted to give my thoughts about the song called “My Brilliant Feat” by Colin Hay. Firstly, I want to talk about the intro on the music video. I like the tone-colours of this music video. Although, I could not understand the relation between one picture to another. But, this song does not. use many things of instruments but it still sounds easy to be listened and beautiful. This video showed us a glance of London, United Kingdom, which is aesthetic and lovely. Overall, this song is quite easy to be stuck In our head. But the lyrics is not really easy to be remembered. I wish Mr Adrian would like to post his music playlist more and more again. Plus, I wanted to give my thoughts about the last song in this post, but then, maybe I’ll do it later.

  8. Colin Hay is a Scottish-Australian singer. He started rose to popularity as the lead vocalist for the band " Men at Work". The song "My Brilliant Feat " was part of the album "Transcendental Highway" which was released on the year 1998. The mixture of the guitar and the voice of Colin Hay creates a song that feels like a time capsule of a certain time in history. It oddly reminds me of the type of songs my father listens to. And even though I this was my first time hearing it, it feels like its taking me back to days when I was a child. And apparently the song was a tribute to George Best, a Northern Irish football player who played for Manchester United. In that case a lot of the lyrics start to make sense since it describes a bit of the atmosphere in a football stadium. Perhaps the chorus was meant to go "to my brilliant feet" in this case?

  9. Wow, that back stabber song was really quite nice, the video however was a little bit too dark for my taste. I'm guessing it is a song about a girl that was cheated on by her special other. I really liked the meaning and the beat behind the song; I just don't like the lyrics that much fo be honest. It's kind of dark and somewhat explicit. I never really heard of this artist however, when I did a quick google search I found out more and more about them. The Dresden Dolls are a musical duo from Boston, Massachusetts USA formed in the year 2000; they also refer to their genre of music as "brechtian punk cabaret"... Whatever that means. Despite my lack of general knowledge of this particular artist, they are in fact the most popular and successful dark carbaret genre artist and are bringing more mainstream attention to the unpopular underground genre.

  10. I would also love to do some research about the third song, “Backstabber” by Dresden Doll because this song did a great job to make me curious. In my point of view, the music video is really odd and bizarre. The original music video was focused around Amanda and Brian making love in a hotel room. While undressing each other they notice various names of other people tattooed to their partner's body. They become more and more jealous and enraged to the point that they attempt to kill each other. This is interspersed with shots of the band performing the song. About the singer, The Dresden Dolls is an American musical duo from Boston, Massachusetts. Formed in 2000, the group consists of Amanda Palmer and Brian Viglione. The two describe their style as "Brechtian punk cabaret", a phrase invented by Palmer because she was "terrified" that the press would invent a name that "would involve the word gothic". Therefore, that’s explain their unique performance.
