Jazz?

Well... 32% of the EWS students who participated in a MUSIC survey I conducted last year chose "Jazz" as one of their three favourite genres. I am a jazz lover too but I am curious (and possibly SNOBBY!) about what kinds of jazz you like. I want you to convince me about the stuff you like! "Jazz" can refer to a very wide range of things! If you have a link to a YouTube clip of some jazz you like, post it in a comment below and I will 'promote' it to this Blog Entry so that other students can just click on it and listen. In your comment, aside from the URL for the clip, please give the name of the artist and the title of the piece of music.

Deo's choice...

Azani's choice...

Data's choice...

Heikal's choice...

Nata's choice...

Vio's choice...

Adrian chooses Nils Petter Molvaer...

Adrian chooses Medeski, Scofield, Martin & Wood...

Adrian chooses Jaga Jazzist...

Adrian chooses Frank Zappa...

  1. n my opinion, firstly when I study some music’s genres in piano, like pop, gospel, waltz, classic, etc, I think Jazz is the hardest genre from all of it. I agree that Jazz is very wide genre because it still has a lot of subgenres such as samba, Bossanova, bebop, blues, swing, and so on. In my opinion, the main characteristic of jazz music based on their progression chord and their improvisation. Jazz has a different chord than the other genre, there is no simple chord in jazz. For example, when in a pop music there’s C Major, if you want to make the music jazzier, you must add some additional key like flat 7 or flat 5 or more complex keys. So the hard things to learn jazz music is on their chords. You need to adapt with that kind of chord like Gm7b5, CMm7, C9 and so on. And also the improvisation, there have different scales with the others, such as Lydian mode, Ionian mode, etc. However, learn jazz music is not always fun, sometimes you will feel bored because you need to practice a lot to be more capable by using that kind of chord.

Jazz has been one genre of music I am particularly fond of since I have learnt in depth about it. It began at around 6th grade. I was into watching movies such as James Bond and the Godfather trilogy. Even though those movies seen upon from the time and location perspective is very different. They had that vintage 60's era aura. In some scenes it was filled with songs that form world renowned artists like Frank Sinatra and reminded me of other artists like Louis Armstrong, Nat King Cole and Miles Davis. The style that the Jazz theme brought like suit and ties also influenced me in a way. It made me want to always dress well even when it's on informal occasions, which is odd in some cases. In another light jazz has also influenced the way I behave. With the neat suit and tie it made me want to behave like a gentleman. I try to replicate how men treat women with respect and how the suit and tie should also reflect our personality.

    1. Choose a favourite youtube clip or, at least, one that typifies your taste in jazz.

  3. Jazz music is getting more popular among teenagers in Indonesia today. With many festivals/concerts happening around schools, landmarks, and tourist spots, jazz music has succeeded in promoting its genre. In Yogyakarta, there is the Prambanan Jazz Festival. Also, in other places like East Java, you can find Banyuwangi Jazz and Bromo Jazz festivals. The biggest of all jazz events in Indonesia is Java Jazz.

Jazz music is more difficult to play than other genres like pop-rock. I performed in a jazz festival last year in Banyuwangi representing my school, my friends who play the guitar and keyboard find it hard as jazz music often uses complex chords. I’m a drummer, so I didn’t have to worry about chords. I actually find jazz music more suited on me than pop-rock music. I’m still having trouble with those really fast drum chops though.

My favourite jazz musician is Echa Soemantri, he is the best drummer in Indonesia. He is often found in jazz festivals performing with other artists like Tompi. I’m not sure if he is part of any band. Anyway, he has a really cool drum set when he performs. He uses different kinds of cymbals and bells which makes different kinds of sounds, this makes his performance even more fun to watch.

Here is a video of Echa Soemantri covering the song ‘Menghujam Jantungku’ by Tompi:

  4. These modern days, the youth generation of Indonesia typically tends to like Indies artists which many of them have jazz as their musical genre. Therefore, there are invariably many jazz music festivals held all over Indonesia, such Jakarta International Java Jazz Festival, Jazz Atas Awan, Ubud Village Jazz Festival, and many more. I attended one in Yogyakarta which called Prambanan Jazz Music Festival on August 2018. To be honest, I do listen to almost all genres of music, but I can't tell much of the differences among genres of music, especially between jazz, R&B, and soft pop, but many artists that I have known before, turn out to have jazz as their genre. Yet compared to pop/rock music concerts, jazz music festivals produce more calming and soothing atmosphere. I believe that's one of the reasons why we like jazz. After experiencing that, I instantly opened my musical ears to jazz sung by both local and international artists wider than before. I also provide a personalized recommendation to an old song called "Hit the Road, Jack" by Ray Charles, but actually it's more R&B than jazz. You can voluntarily check it yourself: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q8Tiz6INF7I

  5. Ooh, I love this topic. Jazz is one of my favourite genres, although I do not study jazz to play or get to know the genre itself. I have never attended any jazz festival or concert, but if you count Danilla's concert a jazz-ish concert, then I have been to a jazz show. In Jakarta itself, there are many well-known jazz shows as well.

The reason why this genre successfully attracted my attention is that it's arguably sudden piano-melody thingy (I don't play the piano, so pardon my lack of knowledge), drum patterns, and smooth saxophone sounds.

Local artists or songs that I like are Indra Aziz's rearrangement of Tiga Dara's Official Soundtrack: "Siapa Namanya?". Joey Alexander's album, "My Favorite Things"—which was nominated "Best Jazz Instrumental Album" in 2015. I would also recommend Tom Browne's song "Throw Down", Danilla's extended version of "My Favorite Things" and "Terlarut oleh Waktu", and also Kendrick Lamar's "These Walls".

  6. I am no stranger to jazz music, due to the fact that I was born and raised in a family that is really affectionate to the genre. I am a regular attendant of jazz gigs, especially the Java Jazz festival, in which I have never missed out any of their annual concerts ever since 2008. Another big jazz-related event that I have been was the Prambanan Jazz in Magelang. There in that event, I found myself a real gem of an artist in the name of Indra Lesmana, a pianist, which triggered my curiosity to explore more and more about Indonesian jazz musicians, as I grew older and I can say that Indonesia is actually blessed with good music, if we dig deep enough to find it. Artists like Dewa Budjana, Jubing Kristanto, and Tohpati, have made it to the international level, and rightfully so.

In case anybody is wondering, my favourite type of jazz music is bossa nova, a jazz sub-genre originated from Brazil. Bossa nova is basically a jazz-influenced samba, which rose to its prominence in the 1960s to the 1970s. My jazz vinyl recordings collection is composed of mostly recordings by Joao Gilberto, Sergio Mendes, Antonio Carlos Jobim, and Chico Buarque. Bossa nova gives me peace like no other music everytime I listen to it. I don’t think that I will ever have enough of bossa nova in my life.

  7. I can say that Jazz is one of my top-3 favourite genres. Indeed, jazz offers my ears beautiful rhythm. In jazz, we have more freedom to improve the melodies by sketch as an example. I agreed that jazz is a very wide range of things! My high-school music teacher showed me a different kind of popular jazz-genre called progressive jazz. I could feel the art of the music, but I couldn’t enjoy it personally. I am still curious and explore this kind of jazz. My teacher’s friend is majoring in progressive jazz, and I asked him about the way they compose this kind of music: a calculation. They make a calculation to compose these rhythms. This fact surprising me because I always thought that music composed by spontaneous ideas with some tiny calculation. I understand that making-music is not an easy process, but with this kind of technique, it must be really challenging and worth process to get the beautiful result!

  8. Oh jazz! Don't try to be that catchy. Jazz music is my all time favorite, I've been learning Jazz piano for almost 8 years now, and a little fun fact do you know Grammy-Award nominee Joey Alexander? He has the same piano teacher as I named Rita Arson, but his piano skills are way better than mine for sure. The likes of Bob James, Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, Duke Ellington are few of my favorite jazz pianist. Some people may think that learning jazz music is boring but if you have discovered the essence of jazz you would never heard any other genre aside jazz, the modes that are being used in Jazz are so many including Dorians, Lydian, Mixolydian, Ionian, etc, and if you play a jazz song and you see for example a C chord your fingers might get itchy sometimes and started to play whether C13 or even C13#11 depends on your approach to the next chords. Or if you want play the simple way you can just play 2-5-1 and start improvise or here's some chord that you can try at home with your own musical instrument, try Bbm7/Eb - Ebm7 - Bm7(b5)Eb - A7(b9)/Eb - Abmaj7/Eb and just play it repeatedly. Personally I liked swing jazz the most but sometimes medium modall jazz would just fine.

  9. I enjoy every music genre, from Disney’s “We’re All in This Together”, “So Close” by John McLaughlin to AC/DC’s “Rock or Bust” and “TGIF” covered by Woe, Is Me. I listen to everything that sounds good to my ears. For the Jazz section, I really recommend “Tight” by Kurt Elling, his voice oh my, so relaxing and the walking bass is super great. Your videos recommendations are great but have you ever listened to Post Modern Jukebox? They cover almost every single popular songs and turn it into a high quality jazz music. One of my favorites are “Creep” covered by Post Modern Jukebox ft. Haley Reinhart, don’t get me wrong, I really love the original Radiohead version but this cover was totally amazing. Another song that I really like is “Focus” covered by Post Modern Jukebox ft. LaVance Colley, the moment when he hit the high pitch, its better than Beyonce singing “Love on Top”. There’s actually another group that do the similar thing to Post Modern Jukebox but they do it in Bahasa. The group is called Deredia, they used to cover Indonesian old and new modern songs and turns it into a really good calming jazz music. But right now they already launched their first album which consist of two CD’s, one of their CD’s are using Bahasa and the other one using English language. Both of them are good and I can’t wait for their second album.

    My recommendations:

  10. Ella Fitzgerald, the Queen of Jazz, one of female singers I adore. She is a well-known American singer and famous because of her clear tone and wide vocal range, the moment I heard her voice, I fell for her completely. I listened to her songs when I was in Senior High School, I used to listen to Louis Armstrong and there is a song that they sang together on duet version of Porgy and Bess (1957), it was the first time I know Ella Fitzgerald. Sometimes I let myself to listen to music I don’t know before, I am not a big fan of Jazz. But I do listen to some Jazz and try to enjoy it. Earlier, Jazz was not kind of music I listen to, since there are not much I know about it,I often listen to R&B, Pop, and some Kpop, actually, I am kind of person who do not really care about the essential of certain song. I like to pick songs based on a characteristic of their voices, as simple as that. Since listen to various kind of music, I don’t have any specific songs that I like the most, for now I enjoy all kind of music including Metal and Punk. I am trying to more open to Jazz and get to know more about it.

  11. Different from the others, I’m actually can not stand jazz. I do not hate jazz music, but I can tell you why I’m generally not a fan. I think because it is a musical style that is largely instrumental and cerebral by nature, and I have to feel the music when I listen to it. I think jazz often requires some thinking, and I do not want to think too much about my music. Sometimes I just want to dance and feel good when I listen to music. In addition, most of the best jazz is instrumental, and I like music I can sing to. But on the other hand, jazz is actually a very classy music. It needs high technical skills and theoretical knowledge to get the beauty of its music. The moods it’s able to create is just unbelievably beautiful and amazing. Well, I admit there’s a lot to love about jazz.

  12. Whoa, I am a fan of jazz. It’s one of my favourite genre. Why? Because jazz is fun, there are so many to explore in Jazz. We can do a lot of melody improvisation and that is the fun part! One of my favourite jazz song is “Lullaby of Birdland” by Ella Fitzgerald. I also love “Take the A Train” by Duke Ellington. Oh, for the jazz singer, I really adore Frank Sinatra! I enjoy all of his songs. “New York, New York” , “Fly Me to The Moon” and “Killing Me Softly” are my favourite. I also a fan of a Japanese Jazz Band called Casiopea. I watched them for the first time on Economics Jazz and turns out I really enjoy their performance, therefore, now I am a fan! Lastly, my favourite Indonesian jazz singer is Tompi. “Aku Jatuh Cinta” and “Menghujam Jantungku” by Tompi, I really like those songs. By the way, I really love to sing jazz so kindly invite me when you make some jazz music project HAHAHAH.

  13. When talking about Jazz, Jazz is no longer a strange genre for me. It all started when I first watched the movie called Nemo, I fall in love with the music that was played in the end credits called “beyond the sea” its instrumental rhythm always carried me in wondering of a beautiful places, even until now whenever I was traveling in a boat or just sitting by the sea I always play this music. As time goes on, I began to hear other Jazz music because my parents always play a Jazz radio in the car called 103.8 or more commonly known as Brava Radio. From that point on I tried to explore a variety kind of Jazz starting from Bossa Nova until the most recent is Japanese City Pop with an essence of Jazz. I personally think Jazz is one of the genres that can suit everybody’s taste.

    1. However, for this moment I am stuck in the style of Japanese Jazz because I feel like the changes in the style of jazz has grown dynamically over the years, and it always kept me amazed by its rhythm that grown more and more diverse. Started by Ryo Fukui and his album called scenery, I’m very fond of how he played the piano together with the contrabass, every instrument fit and fill the hype so well. After Ryo Fukui the journey continued by the rising of Casiopea, they bring a new perspective of Jazz with a major influence of Jazz from the western funk and soul like Earth Wind and Fire, Heatwave and others. Casiopea tries to introduce the new wave until it was continued by a much popular artist among the Japanese people like Mariya Takeuchi, Mondo Grosso, Miki Matsubara, and others. The type of Jazz in Japan has always changed and still what kept me amaze is that their instrument always stays ahead of its time.

  14. Prambanan Jazz 2017 has successfully inspired me that Jazz music is not something like boring genre of music. When listening to Raisa X Isyana performance I was full with the deep part of jazz music. Event though Raisa and Isyana basically are not in the field of jazz music but somehow their collaboration could bring the sensation of jazz music. The second best performance was Stars and Rabbit. This band has a new genre of music in Indonesia, they bring what they called as genre of Imaginary Pop Jazz. They are the one and only Imaginary Pop Jazz band in Indonesia.

In the international world I just know a few number of jazz musicians that I like the most. Maybe like Kenny G , Bob James , and David Benoit. The reason why I don’t like much about the foreigner jazz musician is because until now I haven’t watched their performance in live that’s why I can’t feel their performance , anyway jazz is about sensation so listening their song by youtube is not good enough to feel the sensation.

  15. I have several songs to recommend, so I’m going to leave it here. The first one is titled “Feeling Good” by Nina Simone https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D5Y11hwjMNs , then Lullaby of Birdland by Ella Fitzgerald https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UY8zK4R9oE8 , the third one is Unforgettable by Natalie Cole (link). There are also jazz-songs from Indonesia. Kunto Aji, a jazz male singer from Indonesia has a beautiful collection of jazz music, so if you’re interested, please check his songs out. I watched his music video on his song, “Ekspektasi” which I can say that it is a thoughtful music video. This is the link for the music video I told you: (link). There’s also a song from Yura Yunita called “Get Along with You” which also has beautiful rhythm. If you’re interested, please check that out, here is the link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L-t1gpgWKKU.
