The EWS Photograph Gallery 2018

I imagine many of you enjoy photography - some more seriously than others. It was cited as a hobby by quite a few EWS students on the "Introduce Yourself" blog post. Whatever your ability or level of seriousness, if you think you have some interesting or artistic pictures to share, send them to me at abcoen@yahoo.com.au. I will exhibit them here. You can submit as many as you want. You can use the COMMENTS feature below to comment on other people's submissions - or your own - or share ideas about photography in general.

  1. From all the lovely photos above, I would like to point out the photo titled “Tari Kecak in Uluwatu Temple, Bali” taken by Sophie Kirana. After I saw the picture, I immediately think of Indonesia’s diversity. Moreover, just from seeing the picture, we could fall in love with the unique culture of Indonesia in an instant. I think the moment was beautifully captured by Sophie as in the photo we could see how magnificent the moment must be. Even though I have never visited Bali, I have always been curious about the city. As we all know, Bali is one of the most popular tourist destination so it must be very gorgeous there. As of Tari Kecak itself, I have heard of it in the past although I have never seen it in real life. From what I read, Tari Kecak is a traditional Balinese dance that is performed to tell the story of Ramayana.

  2. By looking at the pictures taken by Sophie Kirana and Kamila Nurmafira, I can say that they are passionate about photography. Generally, all the pictures posted above are very beautiful and aesthetic. Personally, I really like the picture entitled " Asuka Temple, Tokyo, Japan 2" by Sophie Kirana. I like that picture because it shows how a simple thing can turn into something beautiful to look at just by taking a picture of it with the right angle. The picture is very simple, it is only some Japanese kanji writing on a tag hanging by the bell. It may sound simple and boring, but when we get the chance to look at it, we can feel the essence of how a nice picture should look like. Maybe, if I know how to read Japanese kanji, there is a meaningful passage shown on the tag. I Overall, I can say that the pictures above are taken by a well-skilled photographer.

  3. I am very interested in discussing one of the photos above, namely Asakusa Temple. This temple is one of the most famous temples in Japan, and is very crowded with people mostly tourists . I myself had a chance to visit there aroud 2013 to see how the atmosphere around this temple. Around asakusa temple, many traditional foods are sold which are unique and rarely found elsewhere, then there are also many places to rent Japanese traditional clothes complete with a variety of motif choices, then usually people who visit the Asakusa temple choose to wear Japanese clothes commonly known as yukata. Asakusa temple itself is very unique, in my opinion this temple has a blend of traditional and modern nuances. The place is very beautiful, clean, lots of plants and certainly very suitable for taking various photos. I myself really like this place, especially this place is dominated by red, which is one of my favorite colors.

  4. One thing I quickly took notice among these pictures is, each one of the pictures has its own distinct cultural background. For some apparent reasons, I can tell that the photographers, namely Sophie Kirana and Kamila Nurmafira, are seeing something that isn't an everyday view and having their minds amazed by these new culturally diverse sightings. The way I interpret it is, I see the two photographers as people who are tolerant, they ought to be respected so they respect and recognize other cultures. They can put several simple objects and framed them, which then resulted to a compilation of basic, yet pleasing by the eye. I guess we can take this interpretation of mine to a much broader means; the diverse culture of the world. It is how much a portrait of a sunflower, an old structure, a hanging lantern, and even an interior of a certain house, could tell us so many things we can notice. It's like we are given puzzles of culture aspects so that we are given the chance to take a guess on where the picture is taken. All in all, good job for the two photographers!

  5. I do love photography and I do really want to study it more. The photo “Hong Kong” taken by Hanna Wida is very interesting, the object of the photo is tall-buildings, Hong Kong is famous for its skyscrapers and skylines which means there are my places or spot we can find attractive. I also love to see the color gradation of the sky combines with the blue water and the hills covered with fog. I believe this photo was taken from a high place, maybe a hotel room. Another things that is interesting is that the sunlight that covered some buildings and it makes the photo feels even more ‘alive’, I assume that it is taken in the morning. Once I was in Hong Kong, I didn’t really enjoy the trip, I was focused on other things that I couldn’t remember anything impressive about Hong Kong, but after I saw this photo I would love to go there again and discover more cool places and take a lot of pictures, to post on my Instagram account.

  6. This is a very interesting article. I do love photography but I don't think that I am that good. From this article I will probably start learning more about photography so that later I can submit something to this article. People with a good sense of timing in photography is such an incredible person for me. They have a good taste so that they know when is the right time to take a picture. By the way, "A random street when I was on my way to Kyoto by Sophie Kirana" is a really good one (for me). Eventhough there is nothing much in the picture, the title made the meaning of the picture better. I don't know if it's raw or not but the color is also beautiful. "Hong Kong by Hanna Wida" is also something. Pictures with tall buildings always amaze me. That is all from me, I will try to take a lot of picture so that maybe one day there is some "artistic pictures" that will be uploaded from my work.

  7. I've never really had a nack for photography, it is a beautiful art I must say but I have never really enjoyed it. It may be caused by the fact that I don't have the proper equipment and that is one of the reasons I dislike photography. I like to compare things I buy with other more important things before I buy it. For example a great camera lens can cost up to ten million rupiah, I could pay rent for 6 months with that ammount of money. Another reason why I dislike photography is because people sometimes take things too seriously, when someone messes with their shots they get really angry, I know it isn't nice to say "it is just a picture" but, sometimes thats how I feel. Nonetheless photography is a form of art and I admire all the work posted in this thread. I am not hating on anyone I am simply sharing my thoughts on photography in general.

  8. First of all, since it is mentioned that we might be submit our photo, I might submit my photo someday. It is pretty interesting that we can submit our photo as many as we want. I do have photographing as my hobby and I am only going to discuss photography in general as I know. Photography is where we portray or paint a scene and the purpose of it is we can retell what was happened in the scene. From that it can be known that the purpose of photography is to document events. But photography is not limited to do that only, it can be used for artistic matter. For some people photography is to portray what happen surround you, but for people some who really get into the photography then photography is to deliver an idea or thought where the photo should be created as artistically as we want.

  9. I found a personal relieve just by looking at the photos posted in the article above. Photography, to me, is a moment luckily captured with so many stories behind. Photographers tend to have their own reason when capturing pictures and it is related to their own perspective. It could be something very personal or it could be something very general as well. Meanwhile, people who spend their time looking at photos by photographers also have their own perspective towards the photo. For example, the photograph of the Ueno Park, Tokyo, which was taken by Sabrina, showed a man sitting at ease with a book in his hand. In my opinion, I looked at this as a proof of how literacy is still a common habit maintained by the Japanese. I would say it must be very rare to capture such moments in the streets or parks in Indonesia. But Sabrina, the photographer, might have a different opinion regarding the moment captured. Nevertheless, it is everybody’s freedom to interpret a story behind a photograph.

  10. After looking at the pictures that were posted, I figure that the photos that were posted by Sophie Kirana and Kamila Nurmafira are one of the best pictures that were posted here. If you can see from the pictures that were posted by Sophie Kirana, you can see the personalities of Sophie by the selection of pictures. She is a person who can balance between tradition and religion. It shows that she truly respect her elder, truly respect local tradition of the country she is visiting, and still do the obligation of her religion and truly interpret it to everyday's life. While from the pictures from Kamila we can see that she truly knows the art of taking pictures by seeing the quality of pictures that she posted. We can also look through the personalities of the selection of pictures by Kamila that she has an interest in history and also loves the scenery and the atmosphere of nature and this shows that she is more to a peaceful person.

  11. Thank you Mr Adrian for posting my pictures and everyone who appreciate it. Those are my most favourite pictures. But one picture that is very special to me is Nabawi Mosque. To me, both Medina and Mecca are very special. I love to see that picture and remembering how grateful I was to be there with my mother and my father, and hoping to be there again in the future. Japan is also amazing. The view, the people are very polite and friendly, the culture, the food, and so many good reasons why I love Japan and definitely would love to go back again. True like Nadya Alexandra said that Asakusa Temple is one of the most famous temples in Japan and it is very crowded. What I love about Asakusa Temple is the street food. There are so many delicious street foods there in Asakusa. My favourite is dango!

  12. Seeing those photos, I got flashbacks and felt relaxed. From many of the photos taken above by our friends, I have been to some of the destination to feel it live. I have been to Osaka, Tokyo, Melbourne, Singapore and also Uluwatu Temple. What I see here also, the different vibes and culture are something else. It is beautiful in its own way. When you go to Japan, you can feel how the ethics of humanity, the discipline and also their famously kimono. If you go to Australia you will know first of its beaches, opera house and etc. If you go to Indonesia, you will know more about the diverse culture their and also the characteristics of our people. Even though I have experienced lively about some of the places with memories, but let us appreciate with the result of photo they took. The result of all the photos even made them looks like or even already a skilled photographer. For all my friends that produced some great photos above, Great skills and wishing more to come!

  13. Looking at all of those pictures above, I can see that all of those pictures are very pleasing in my eye, the one that I like the most is the one taken by Chika Erizka titled the Amanjiwo #2 and Melbourne, 2017 #2. I really like the upside down effect of the photograph.

For me, photography is very important, not as a way to show and post aesthetic pictures to your social media account and get as many like as possible. Photography is more of a way to perpetuate a beautiful moment that is happening in your life. What important is not how good your pictures look like, but how good the memories are with the picture you have taken.

The idea that photography is an expensive hobby is not completely right. Whether you can afford a good set of camera that can cost upward of 30 million or just a camera from a phone, both of them still takes picture and perpetuate the moment of your life. Nonetheless, photography is a form of art and I really appreciate the work that my friends put in making such a good picture as shown on the article. I want to congratulate them for their skills and I await more good pictures from them.

  14. From all the picture above, my favorite one is Amanjiwo taken by Chika Erizka. i love the photo because it’s very interesting, and the architecture look like borobudur temple, last week i got a chance to stay in Amanjiwo with Chika, from the resort we could see Borobudur temple, other than that we could also see the peak of Merapi mountain. This resort is very maintaining the comfort and privacy of guests, guarding here is also quite strict. when we arrived at the entrance, the security guard asked if we really wanted to stay here or not. When I fentered the resort building, I felt amazed by the cool architecture and interior of the building. Enter this resort like entering another world. Not only because the resort is built from beautiful stone structures, but also because of the calm atmosphere surrounded by trees, complete with the sounds of crickets. Gamelan music and employees wearing Javanese clothing also made me feel back in the past.

  15. My pictures were taken last year during my trip to Nepal. Initially I decided to go on a solo trip to Mt. Everest basecamp, but once I arrived there, it gave such a kick that I decided to higher. I went until the maximum height that you’re a loud to go without guide and reached until around 6200m. In total it took me 2.5 weeks to go up and 8 days to go down.
The first picture is taken from the Kalapathar Peak (5695m). This summit is close to Everest Basecamp, it will take you around 3 hours to get there. Just a little left, outside of this picture, you have a good view on the Everest summit. You can still see the highest mountain in the world on my second picture, taken from Everest Basecamp. It is the mountain in the middle. Don’t be misled by the clear sky, only 10 minutes after this picture was taken I was in the middle of a snow storm, which was certainly one of the scariest moments in my life.

    2. Hi Mr Adrian,

That is correct. I believe that going down is easier in general. I as well planned to do volunteer work in the Himalaya, but because I miscalculated the days, I was suddenly in a hurry to go down. Therefore I made longer days and took shorter breaks. Also, when you are going down, there is no need for acclimatisation days, which reduces the time significantly too. Another, and in my opinion the most important, factor is the extra amount of red blood cells. Once you reach such altitudes, your body produces a lot more of these cells and they give you more stamina and energy. It was an amazing feeling that, in my opinion, matches with a low dose of amphetamine. I believe that this is also the reason why professional athletes, such as cyclists and marathon runners, do altitude training sessions before they have an important match or event.

  16. i took the pictures above (Melbourne 2017) when i was on my summer holiday last year with my parents. We stayed in Melbourne for a week and my favorite place was the state library of Victoria. State library of Victoria is a landmark and cultural icon of Melbourne. From outside of the building we could see the stunning architecture of its building, inspired by the classical era. Located in the northern centre of the central business district, this library is open for public from 10am to 9pm on Monday to Thursday and from 10am to 6pm on Friday to Sunday. Inside the building itself has a magnificent interior, vast collection of books, there’s also a gallery to enjoy. I went there several time and mostly its packed with uni students or tourists. There are chess board at La Trobe reading room incase you needed a break from all the reading. The library is also equipped with free wifi to support your work or your studying session there.

  17. I would like to review a photo about “a random street when I was on my way to Kyoto” by Sophie Kirana. That picture reminds me when I went there for 2 years ago. when I walked through that street, the situation was really quite there, there was almost no motorcycle or car thru that street. Most people like to walk, use a bicycle or public transportation such as MRT and Bus. Just a few people use their own transportation, such as car or motorcycle, even on a big street. We tried to avoid using a car or taxi there because the price was really expensive. It spends more than 3000 Japanese Yen for 3-5 km. So, we preferred to walk around the street and using MRT to go some places. Anyway, I truly enjoy the vibe when I walked there. The weather was not too hot in the afternoon, the street was not too crowded, and it had less pollution.

  18. Most of the pictures are showing various destinations around the world. From the pictures, I can visualize myself being in different places that I have never been to. Other thing that I learn from those pictures is that each places have their own attractions. Some of the places are known by its nature and some are known by its modernity. Out of those perfectly captured pictures, I would like to point out the pictures taken by Kamila Nurmafira. I was stunned by the pictures titled “The Gardens” and “22/04/18”. Both of the pictures are showing the beauty of nature. In my opinion, these two pictures represent warm feelings and peacefulness. I can imagine myself strolling down that road with my earphone plugged into my ears listening to chill music and feel as if a huge weight has been lifted up from my shoulders. These two pictures shown that Kamila has a very good photography and editing skills.

  19. The types of photography above are mostly street photography, landscapes and photography of moments that is happening around us. The picture that take my attention is the Stairs, in Bugis Street Singapore by Sabrina Kiasati. This picture has high difficulty in capturing it because, its angle should be perfect and also precision. The other picture which is really impressed me is the Amanjiwo#1, Magelang by Chika Erizka. This picture reminds me of the temple that mostly is located in eastern Indonesia and also how the picture is taken it is showing a perfect photography. While the picture taken by Sophie Kirana and Mutiara Annisa took my memory back when I visited Korea and Japan with my friends and family. The vibes between Korea and Japan is much similar and it is supported by the kindness and politeness of people in Korea and Japan. The one that makes different of Korea and Japan is that Japan sell a lot of merchandise and also unique gift that we can keep.

  20. From those photos, I’m very fascinated by the places that those people took them. They’re didn’t just not go to those places, but they also took these pictures and want to tell us of the many different colors in many different around the world. And not just around the people in the cities, they also took pictures of the wild high up in the mountains, although I’m not a wild-life kind type of person, it still amazed me. Not many people want to do that kind of things, it only took some people with the courage and passion of those who want to explore places that people sometimes only go just for their happiness/experienced. But not for them, they really showed us those cultural colors within many different places, because of that, we know that if we’re to bored in our own doorstep, we can go and explore this vast colorful world.

  21. I was first introduced to photography when I was in grade 4. My father’s friend was a journalist and owned a camera. He was the first person to teach me how to properly use a DSLR camera, and I instantly fell in love with it. The same year, on my birthday, my parents gave me a DSLR camera. It was one of the best present I’ve ever received. I used my first DSLR camera for about 4 years before changing it to the one I have right now. I went through a lot with my old DSLR camera; like family trips, school trips, concerts, and visiting museums. It was hard to replace my old DSLR with my new one, for this reason I still have my old DSLR and my father still use it up until now. I personally think that beside the pictures itself, cameras also leave behind stories and memories.

  22. Talking about photography, I personally love taking picture. Due to that, around 4 years ago, I asked my dad to buy me camera as my birthday present. Until now, I never regret having it. When I went on holiday, I always bring my camera with me. I love to take photo of the scene and also I like to help my family to take pictures. Not only that, when my school had events, I took advantage of that opportunity to bring camera and took photos as much as I can. I usually use my camera, or phone to take pictures, but sometimes I also love capturing moments with my polaroid camera. Polaroid camera is a camera that instantly prints the picture, lately this camera is very popular among teenagers. By taking photos, It helps me to realize that every moment is beautiful, and it always become memories that stays forever as a part of our life.

  23. I think that the “We’re Missing The Point” series by Atalla Dzofran Wahid really speaks volumes about the modern society. I think it really represents our generation in a nutshell. Our generation is so focused on capturing the moment that we lose the moment altogether. The advancement in technology has benefited us greatly. We have amazing smartphones that people from the past only dreamt about. We have high-speed computers that older generations find hard to comprehend. All that makes the world better, but the real question is, does it make us better? Every time we feel that a moment is something out of the ordinary, we all have the instinctive urge to record it on our phones. Every time we feel bored in a certain situation, we turn to our phones for entertainment. New technology came from humble beginnings, yet it is now turning into the cancer that envelopes the modern society.

  24. The more I see it, the more I become attracted to the photo “Nan Lian Garden” by Hanna Wida. I think it contains a deeper meaning to what meets the eye. This photo depicts a beautiful, traditional garden with an abundance of trees and temples. On the other hand, we can see some tall, modern skyscrapers at the back of the photo. This, in my opinion, represents the mutual respect between modern and traditional cultures in the world. Modern technologies and innovations really have changed our way of life, yet we must not forget our roots that we are built upon. The photo represents the refreshments needed in the modern world. If the world revolves solely on its advancements and progress, it would drive the world to be filled with hard driven robots. We need the balance of culture and tradition, as well as leisure and serenity, to function as a human society.

  25. I would like to comment on Lima’s picture. I can’t imagine how it is to be on such high altitude, I believe it would be really cold there, and it must have took a really long time, lots of effort, and determination to push yourself to such limits. In my wildest dreams, I see myself on top of Mount Everest as well, yet I’m not really sure if I ever reach it. Nevertheless, I’m blown away by the magnificent views Lima was able to captured. I would love to make a similar trip and become one with nature and find my inner peace. I believe that on that very trip I would be eager to meet the sherpas, yaks, and the local inhabitants of the Himalayan. I believe such trip will give me an experience that I will treasure for the rest of my life, and I hope that one day I would be able to go on such epic height.

    1. Hi Niken,
Thank you very much for your interest in both my trip as my pictures. I would recommend you to make a similar trip. The Himalaya region offers much more that I was able to capture in just those two pictures. Stunning views, lovely people and an experience for life is what you get when you go there. If you want to make such trip, but you don’t want to walk as much as I did, you can also go there by plane. You can take a flight from Kathmandu, the capital city, to Lukla. Lukla airport is known as the most dangerous airport in the world, nevertheless you’ll save a lot of time by flying there. It will still take you about 6 days (including one acclimation day) to reach Everest Basecamp. I’m planning to go there again next Januari, so let me know if you want to join.

    2. I appreciate Lima’s experience and all, but I guess He was making just the most out of him. I mean like there are thousands of people that have been to the everest basecamp. I don’t even know which basecamp Lima reached lol. But yeah it must have been pretty cool. I mean not cool in the picture and the vibes but the temperature. He must had been holding his pees for hours for several occasions. I am in the contra side here for that Lima’s pics in the basecamp. There are other people reaching higher spots with heavier struggles than Lima’s that has not been credited so I guess Lima is descendt. Of course they are not here in our English Writing Skills 2018 to express about stuffs and share their struggles. It is a normal thing to lose a finger or two or get your foot frozen. And Lima managed to get out of that condition clean and well. Congrats to that Dude for giving me the chance to judge, that is in our Indonesian blood to criticize lol.

    3. Hi Paul,

I appreciate your interest in my journey. To take away your confusion, I would like to clarify that there is only one Everest Basecamp and that is exactly the one I have been to. You are complete right, there are a lot of people that reached the summit of Mt Everest, but in my case I simply didn’t have the time, money and training to go all the way to the top. Going there requires years of practicing and experience and you need to have an insanely expensive insurance to cover the risks. Nevertheless, there are a lot of people that died even before reaching Everest Basecamp. Altitude sickness, Yaks and the dangerous roads cause a lot fatal accidents. At 5400m they even created a beautiful memorial for all the people that didn’t make it. Whenever you are there I would recommend you to visit that place.
Taking in conclusion that I even went 1000m higher than Basecamp, on my own, without a guide, I believe that it was not without risk. Adventure is in my blood I guess.

      Love you Paul <3

  26. Photography is something that I always admire, it’s a complex thing that need a dedication and I’m so amazed that the fact it was so complicated to took some good picture especially when you use a film camera. I always wanted to learn about photography but I guess my effort is not enough so the result is not as beautiful as the photos that we sees above. Also I always wanted to travel the world, seeing the beauty of the world and save the memories by taking some pictures with me and telling a story to my granddaughters and my grandsons every stories behind every photo that I took. I’m amazed, every picture above is really lovely in its own way. I really wanted to know the story behind every photos and the story of how they got this photo. In my opinion, I think, this is by far, the most interesting article that appears in this blog.

  27. Photography skill is something I wish I posses, but unfortunately, I hardly take decent pictures, I but I do enjoy looking at people's photographs. Not just scenery photographs but also photographs about people. Sabrina Kiasati's "At Ease" taken at Ueno Park intrigues me the most. When I look at the photo, I somehow feel like I am 'there', looking at the person that's currently reading. The angle is also spot-on, we can see the trees towering the person who's reading a book and the lighting also make this picture looks like an old movie scene. Other photo that immediately caught my attention is Sepanjang Beach, just because I adore sunsets and sunrises at the beach. I've never been to Sepanjang Beach though, but from the picture, I know it will look just as beautiful as the photograph. Lastly, the stairs taken by Sabrina is very aesthetically pleasing to look at. Because in my opinion, the colourful stairs radiates happiness. From the picture we can see the contrast between the artsy stairs and ordinary-looking building in the back. Kudos to Sabrina for capturing such unique moments.

  28. Speaking of Photography, I do fall in love with it. My first camera which I obtained when my mom randomly, without any talks or questions asked to me, she bought me a camera with a couple of lenses accompanied with it, stated that it’s a promo she got from her office. At first, I complained with my mom why don’t she bought me a PS4 instead since it’s a promo coming from Sony back then. I started to “Play” around with it when I was driving around Jakarta and Tangerang. I parked my car and started to take some shots of the buildings, the busy road and many more which I forgot since my mom accidentally formatted the memory card when she was borrowed my camera for her trip with her colleagues. One thing that I found quite funny is, I didn’t realise until my dad told his colleague that the camera is mine, since my mom said that it’s hers despite the fact that she bought it for me that day. Up until today, I took a picture with it or with my smartphone and hope that someday my dad would bought me a drone so that I could take more pictures especially in areas that cannot be reached by foot.

  29. Even though that our family did not have a lot of family trips due to the fact that both of my parents are busy which’s quite disappointing to be honest. But then, luckily my house and my neighbourhood in Tangerang do have some good spots that I found it good for photographic purposes like my parent’s garden, and even the morning view from my balcony can be able to be photographed and with a small portion of editing, it would be a good photo. Unluckily, I did not able to explore more spots in my house and neighbourhood due to the fact that we’ve just moved there for around 2 months or less and even we did not fully decorate it for the first few weeks since we moved since my dad was hospitalised and me and my mom both devoted our time that few weeks to took care of him up until he’s be able to be officially released from the hospital and a week after that the result of the IUP test came out and I move here. I hope that I can produce more photographs here and I would love to get some recommendations of places that I can explore here or somewhere near Jogja so that I can explore more during my holidays.

  30. I am very interested in “Tari Kecak in Uluwatu Temple, Bali” photo by Sophie Kirana. It is interesting for me because it reminds me when i went to Bali and saw this Tari Kecak live about 5 years ago. It is very good memories, especially it was actually my Junior High School’s Study Tour. I can not explain to you how much fun i had. Even me and my friends secretly bought Brem Bali which is some kind of alcoholic drink, and it is quite strong one. I remember that one of my friends was drunk because of that and started to swearing and walking wobbly into my room. I was laughing so hard with my other friends because he was talking about we were mocking him although we were silence the whole time and not saying anything. Not just that, he was actually slept on my room’s floor and we need to carry him to his room. Wow! That is my friend, the power of photo,it can bring mezmerizing and beautiful memories.

  31. For the “At ease. Ueno Park, Tokyo” photo by Sabrina Kiasati, my mind could not stop but to think about life. In that photo, it is showing an old man which sitting alone on the bench while calmly read a book. It looks like he already reached most of his life’s goals and now he is just resting his mind, body, and soul peacefully. I was imagining at some point of my life, i would be in that old man position and taking my time to reflect all beautiful things God done and still will do until the rest of my life. Although i can actually did it now, but it will be more dramatical if i did it when i am old. But hey, what is wrong with it? Do it if you feel like you want to, sometimes it is good to take a break and look at all things that God did for us so we could look forward our lives more passionately.

  32. The photo that has caught my attention the most is the one titled “Sepanjang Beach 2018” by Sabrina Kiasati. Although I’m not quite sure about the exact location from which she took the photo, my imagination was enough to bring me to the conclusion that she was on a shore at the exact moment waves of water had swept the sand as well as the trapped rocks below her knees. Guessing by the rather pale colours of the photo, I would assume that she took it during a sunset. Next, the reason as to why I chose this picture and not the other ones which some people may deem to be better and more vibrant, is because this photo reminded me of a thought that I once had while I was staring at the horizon as it rested on the ocean. The whole thing, standing firmly on an abundant amount of sand as the waves of water below me tried to drag me down with quite a tremendous force as I fixed my gaze at the horizon ahead, thinking as to what might lie beyond the tiny island that I was merely visiting, made me wonder whether this was the same view that Christopher Columbus, as well as the many other great adventurers and explorers before our generation, had witnessed before they took themselves on a voyage in search for greatness? This was and still is the greatest motivation that has kept me going for so long, which I’m sure would also put anyone under a vigorous spell that would keep them running forever towards the dreams that they had once neglected as they reached adulthood and eventually forgotten. Moreover, imagine that the irregularities of the different formations that the sand below you has, mark the spots on which many of those great inspiring people had once stood as they stared the same horizon as the one you’re gazing right now. Lastly, to end this paragraph, I would say that no one would ever feel motivated enough before they were reminded back of the efforts and achievements that the great and historical people before them had struggled with the hope merely for their future generations to enjoy, and if it weren’t too much to ask for, having their names remembered as some of the many contributors of mankind’s history.

  33. I was so into photography during my secondary years and found these pictures uploaded by my friends are fantastic. Even though most of them are taken by camera of their phones, the quality of the picture shown did not fail to amaze me. They successfully relate to the phrase that my photography teacher always use, a picture is worth a thousand words or let the photograph tell its own story. For me, these pictures show different cultures from different countries. These photographs are very detailed, the editing effort given was just right that, it makes me feel like I am there. Even though we are not physically there but, these photographs give us a little hint on what to expect when we visit those countries. Photography is a hobby that everyone can do. Aside from it being fun, we are collecting moments that would be useful for us in the old ages, to bring back memories. Just like what I stated before, let the photograph tell its own story.

  34. "At ease. Ueno Park, Tokyo by Sabrina Kiasati" this symbolizes my heart at this time. By the way, I'm also very interested in the world of photography since a long time ago. For me photography is a second medium for storing a memory, besides being kept in the heart and remembered, memories can also be stored in a frame of light called a photo.

For me photography has an essence that can symbolize people's feelings. By looking at a photo we will be brought to a very broad imagination. This Sabrina photo symbolizes someone who is in a silence, a very strong philosophical value with an amazingly charming Japanese atmosphere.

For me a photo has beauty criteria. First is about the moment, in this photo Sabrina is able to capture moments that not everyone can get easily, moments become very rare things in the world of photography. Second is about how to take photos which include skills in adjusting the angle and light intensity, in this photo Sabrina is able to adjust the angle of photos between people with surrounding objects. And the last is the tool used in taking photos, can be smarthphone or use mirror less.

    1. First of all, I would like to say that I'm sorry that I only read your comment now. After I sent the photos to Mr. Adrian, I only checked this article twice and I didn't check it again. Your comment about my "At ease. Ueno Park" somehow makes me super happy and touched. "In this photo Sabrina is able to capture moments that not everyone can get easily, moments become very rare things in the world of photography." I'm that not good at taking pictures, but you made it sounds like I am a professional here. Capturing something has been my hobby for some years now, but I never learned anything about photography and I only capture something based on how I'd like it to be and not theoritically. If in my eyes the scenery is beautiful or unique, then I will take it immediately. Anyway, thank you so much for this comment. I really appreciate it.

  35. Chyntia took a photo of sky lanterns were being lit and released on air as a part of Vaisak Day Celebration in Borobudur temple. It looks gorgeous! Sky lantern has several other names such as Floating Lantern and Kongming Lantern. ‘Kongming’ is a chinese term that can be translated into English, means ‘Sky’. Kongming lantern is a small hot air balloon made of paper, mostly in a form of cylinder, with an opening at the bottom where a candle is lit. Even though it is originally a tradition brought by the Chinese, releasing sky lantern into the open air has also become tradition in several other countries around the world: Deepavali Celebration in India, Lunar New Year in Taiwan, Yi Peng Festival in Thailand, and Festas Juninas in Brazil. Isn’t it spectacular to see small flying lights floating on a dark endless sky at night? I always enjoy every moment when the lanterns are being released. It gives me a sense of peace.

  36. These photos were nicely taken. To be honest, I am not a guy that likes to take a photo of things. It is very hard for me to determine which view is beautiful and which is not. Even if I did find one, it is also hard for me to stay still when taking a photo. My hand will always move or shake. When I look at these photos, what they have in common is that most of them do not involve people in it. There are some that do, but most of it are just random things. The one that I like the most is the vaisak day. I just love the colors of it and to me it looks simple. I really want to be able to enjoy photos more. Even though I said earlier that I am not a guy who likes to take a photo, I want to change that. I want to be able to take a photo of anything

  37. Whoa, what a great photo Chyntia! By the way, Chyntia’s amazing photos were noticed by many seniors! They praise Chyntia’s photo. Actually, I know that fact from Chyntia. She said to me that a senior of her told her that her photos are amazing! Many of his friends compliments Chyntia’s photos in English Writing Skill blog. I believe that he only said that to her for chit chat purpose. Or should I say “basa basi” in Bahasa. Like, why they only notice Chyntia’s photo! Well, I have to admit that you did an amazing job, Chyntia. What a great photo of yours. Okay, what should I write next. It’s so hard to reach 150 words!!! I don't know what to write anymore. Oh, every photo, in here is amazing. I’m sorry my comment is so random and strange, but I really need to comment at least 4 this week, but I don’t really have a mood to read articles. FINALLY, more than 150 words yay!

    1. Thankyou vio for the compliment! Actually to clarify things, I didn’t say many seniors noticed me, it was just that one senior the other day that talked to me. 2. Hi, Chyntia! Thank you for answering my comment about your photo, it’s such a nice of you. Yeah, that was what I mean, a senior told you that your photos are amazing and many of his friends compliments your photo as well. Sorry for my messy explanation above. By the way, did my comment offend you? I am so sorry, I really didn’t mean that! I just want to comment on something that does not require me to read anything HAHAHAH. I love travelling, but when I do travel, I enjoy my time. So I didn’t take many photos. Oh, I did take lots of photos actually, photos of food I ate! Mr. Adrian should make a new article called “The EWS Food Photograph Gallery 2018.” I will be the one who shares so many photos! By the way, please answer my comment once again, Chyntia HAHAHA. I need one comment again to reach 4 comments.

  38. We all know that those pictures are beautiful! But, if I could pick as my favourite, the picture captured by Chyntia Deviani titled as Big Sur California which was taken in 2017. I love the colour combination on the picture and also the scenery. It reminds me of pictures from Santorini. The ocean looks so beautiful under the blue sky. My second favourite is a picture captured by Hanna Wida which titled Nan Lian Garden which portrays the beauty of Hongkong. We can really see the combinition between the beauty of the park and also the beauty of the skyscrapers. My third favourite picture is a picture captured by Naufalino Rabbani which has no title #5. I like the simplicity of the picture but still portrays the beauty of the leaves. more, I like the picture capture by Atalla Dzofran Wahid which titled We're Missing The Point #1. I really like the idea of the picture and what the picture really means.

  39. Photography is something that I have always loved and respected. My brother is actually the one who introduced me to photography. He is very passionate about photography ever since we were younger, so I grew up learning a lot about photography through him. For me, looking at people’s photographs of natures and sceneries makes me feel at ease. So, looking at the photographs that my friends have submitted gives me some sort of bliss. All of the photographs are beautiful and unique in their own way, it makes you feel as if you are re-living the moment that was captured in those photograph with them. That is the beautiful thing about photography, through photography you are able to look at something based off someone else’s perspective. The existence of photography is truly a blessing. Through photography, we are able to express something that no words or sentences could ever do. Photography is truly special and one of a kind, I am truly grateful photography exist.

  40. Atalla Dzofran’s second photo titled “We’re Missing The Point” really catches my attention. As a music enthusiast, I have been attending several music concerts and festival. It is really relatable to nowadays generation. I personally always take pictures and videos during the show. But actually, this maybe an unpopular opinion, but not like others that probably only take pictures and videos for the sake of social media, my purpose of taking some pictures and videos is to make a memory for myself. Those who only do it for social media probably will not going to see the result of the photos and videos anymore, but in the contrary, I indeed will watch and review it right after the concert. I also definitely likes to re watch them to do some throwbacks. The annoying thing about this phenomenon is that this covers our view. I just really hope that nowadays people are not only take those videos for social media’s sake, because the point of taking pictures is actually for our own pleasure.

  41. I wasn’t seeing this article after now and I’m amazed by how beautiful those pictures are. I mean, I know that photography is something that quite hard to learn and It takes dedication and also a really good amount of money to enjoy this kind of hobby. Me personally, I don’t really keen to a photographical things because some reasons that can’t be explained but I really appreciate the photographer who gave his blood, time, sweat and tears just to take a photo that can be copied through pinterest and also google images. I think right now we need to make people more aware about copyright violation, it’s something that essential, the only thing that art creator, photographer etc. holding on. It’s really sad to see a talented young man whose making art and he got nothing except some applause and appreciation from people in the internet, those two things cannot feed a man a day and also cannot bring a food to the table.

  42. Personally, I’m not really into photography but I always love seeing the result pictures. I really love seeing pictures taken from all around the world. From that, I can really see the beauty and the diversity that exists in this world. I would like to talk about the pictures taken by Lima and Anissya. First, I would like to talk about the pictures taken by Lima. I think that the pictures are very stunning because it succeeded to capture the beauty of Mount Everest. I always wanted to go to Mount Everest and to see it with my own eyes. The second one is the pictures taken by Anissya. I love all of the pictures, but the one that really caught my attention is the ‘Somewhere in Mount Rinjani pictures. Mount Rinjani is located in Nusa Tenggara Barat, Indonesia. I never go there, but I’ve always wanted to go there with my friends. Seeing Mount Rinjani Pictures from Anissya, makes me wants to go there more and more.

  43. I would like to comment on the photos taken and uploaded by Naufalino Rabbani, my EWS classmate. I see that he uploaded 6 of his photos. All six of them has the same name which is “Untitled” followed by the number one to six. His kinds of photos are stills that show little or no action. Two of six photos (number one and number two) showed a little action of cooking and a bee pollinating a flower, but I personally think that if the shutter speed is a little bit slower, then the camera might capture the moving parts with a blurred effect, showing the “movement” and giving a tiny bit more “life” to the picture. Out of the six picture, only one picture is taken indoors and the other five are taken outdoors. My favourite picture is the fifth because I think it would be nice to print it in a t-shirt.

    1. After scrolling through all the pictures in this blog post, I saw two photos which spoke to me the most. They are We’re Missing the Point #1 and We’re Missing the Point #2 by Atalla. The first picture shows a group of people in a room together, but ironically all of them are busy with themselves, playing with their smartphones. The second picture shows a crowd attending a concert but again ironically, they are all busy taking videos on their smartphones. I agree with the title that’s given by Atalla; we are totally missing the point. In times like meeting with friends and watching a concert, we should really focus on enjoying and interacting with friends (or artist) and put away all distractions. I didn’t get the chance to feel the atmosphere of our preceding generation’s concerts where people put their lighters up rather than their phones in a concert. I hope that in the near future smartphones doesn’t disrupt our social lives anymore.
