i watch it on the tv
full of this feeling that
it's got nothing to do with me
so i have this notion that
i say
i won't let these things get me down
i read a paper in the morning
but i don't like silicone
or the spinning mr blair
or rutting vicars
i say
i won't let these things get me down
why don't you join me in my garden?
i don't have no worries
no sleep loss to speak of
there are some people have a theory
tell all the leaders they've got
to rearrange their days
they say
won't let these things get them down
won't let these things get them down
i've seen the answer to my question
seen it written on a wall
the things that eat you up
maybe it's over
because she's huge
and about to sing
i say
This poem tries to give a spirit to the reader. The first time I read this poem, I felt that the writer was trying to convey a message through every sentence he wrote. Every repetition of the sentence is always followed by the word "won't let these things get them down". From that phrase, I feel that the writer tries to use some people's habits every day and then connects them to the message that the author wants to convey. This poetry gives me a meaning that we must always fight and not give up even though there are so many things that try to stop our struggle. No matter how difficult our problems are, we are medicine for ourselves. In addition, instead of external motivation from the outside, we must also have motivation from ourselves because we are the best internal motivation of all. Last bu not least ,always remember "don't let these things get you down."
ReplyDeleteI feel like the writers of this poem wants us the readers to be empowered and encouraged to live out our days. To just be who we really are and be the version of ourselves. Do the things that we love to do and enjoy every little bit of it. Despite of all the things happening in the world, no matter how fast and quick the world is changing, the writer motivates to keep staying on our feet. Whatever changes made in this world, the poem encourages us to not be the victims of changes. Instead the poem wants us to be the changer or at least appreciate simple things that are currently parts of our life. Enjoy the little things. Life nowadays compared to how it was before 19th century is completely different. The poem somehow makes me feel as if life should not be different. No matter how advanced this world is only going to be, it still depends on us to how we enjoy it.
ReplyDeleteI think the writer of the poem is talking about the news and media, how the headlines exclaiming about war, global problems, disasters, and all other kinds of bad news they cover. Reading about these bad things around the world every single day makes the writer, and all of us as well, makes them feel sad and negative. When the writer repeats the line ‘I won’t let these things get me down’, they are reminding themselves that despite what we see about all the bad news we hear, we shouldn’t let it ruin our day. There are many beautiful and positive things that’s happening all around us that also deserves our attention and we should smile about. This does not mean however, that the writer is ignorant and unsympathetic towards things that aren’t about themselves. This is shown in the line ‘I know the world is out there’, where the writer acknowledges the problems going around, but not allowing the evils of the world affect their views and feelings. The message behind the poem is beautiful because the author wants to share that reminder not just for himself, but for the readers as well, to not get too caught up in the news.
ReplyDeleteAs my friends have stated above, I also agree that this poem has an important message, which initially concludes empowerment of our everyday lives. Sometimes we are too caught up in whatever is happening in the world that we are losing ourselves in the process. The news that is told in the television has big potentials to influence us; the news itself has a double-edged sword kind of impact. It could either trigger us to do better, to make the world a better place, to feel proud of the nation’s achievement, or it could give us all these negative vibes. When there are news in the television about murder, kidnapping, etc., my mother always told me to change the channel. I think I could understand why. This kind of news is horrific and it sends shiver down my spine. That’s why the writer wants us to not be let down. Sure, we care about the floods, earth quakes, natural disasters, sinking ship, etc. But let’s not let this news prevent us to live our life to the fullest.
ReplyDeleteAfter reading the article, I felt that the poem is trying to give its readers positive vibes. It is telling the readers to not give up although the world always brings you down. In my opinion, when the rest of the world feels like a burden to you, that is when you have got to stand on your own strong feet. Whatever it brings on you, you must not give up let alone give in to the lust that is blinding in this world. You should keep being you and fight whatever you think only brings negative impact to you. When you feel so tired that it tempts you to surrender, you should always remember that your parents, family, friends love you and you will always have God by your side. So, fight that feeling and prove to others that you are very strong on your own. Only after that you know that you overcome the problem and now it is only a part of the past.
ReplyDeleteLike everybody else, I do believe that this poem tries to relay a positive message to it’s readers. Through the structure of sentences (supported by the pictures), the poet describes current issues happening around the world : religious conflicts, government accountability and corruption, lack of freedom of choice, speech and expression, as well as headlines of newspapers or tv shows scrutinizing even the smallest matters such as celebrities’ personal lives or even promotion of self-judgements of oneself that could lead to lowered self-esteem, anxiety, depression or even worse, self-destruction. The poet then repeats the message “won’t let these thing let them down today” or something along those lines after describing those issues. To me, it seems like the poet wrote this poem as a reminder to it’s readers that issues, whatever they might be, are just inevitable but it’s up to the individuals on how to handle it positively so that it won’t get into them and drag them down. In the poem, one way is to chant “I won’t let these things get me down, they won’t get me down today” as a mantra of positivity and focus on other positive things to think about like doing hobbies or taking a break from all the fuss by going on a holiday.
