"Linger"
If you, if you could return, don't let it burn, don't let it fade.
I'm sure I'm not being rude, but it's just your attitude,
It's tearing me apart, It's ruining everything.
I swore, I swore I would be true, and honey, so did you.
So why were you holding her hand? Is that the way we stand?
Were you lying all the time? Was it just a game to you?
But I'm in so deep. You know I'm such a fool for you.
You got me wrapped around your finger, ah, ha, ha.
Do you have to let it linger? Do you have to, do you have to,
Do you have to let it linger?
Oh, I thought the world of you.
I thought nothing could go wrong,
But I was wrong. I was wrong.
If you, if you could get by, trying not to lie,
Things wouldn't be so confused and I wouldn't feel so used,
But you always really knew, I just wanna be with you.
But I'm in so deep. You know I'm such a fool for you.
You got me wrapped around your finger, ah, ha, ha.
Do you have to let it linger? Do you have to, do you have to,
Do you have to let it linger?
And I'm in so deep. You know I'm such a fool for you.
You got me wrapped around your finger, ah, ha, ha.
Do you have to let it linger? Do you have to, do you have to,
Do you have to let it linger?
You know I'm such a fool for you.
You got me wrapped around your finger, ah, ha, ha.
Do you have to let it linger? Do you have to, do you have to,
Do you have to let it linger?

"A Thousand Miles"
Making my way downtown
Walking fast
Faces pass
And I'm home-bound
Staring blankly ahead
Just making my way
Making a way
Through the crowd
And I need you
And I miss you
And now I wonder....
If I could fall into the sky
Do you think time would pass me by?
'Cause you know I'd walk a thousand miles
If I could just see you tonight
It's always times like these
When I think of you
And I wonder if you ever think of me
'Cause everything's so wrong
And I don't belong
Living in your precious memory
'Cause I need you
And I miss you
And now I wonder....
If I could fall into the sky
Do you think time would pass me by?
'Cause you know I'd walk a thousand miles
If I could just see you tonight
And I, I
Don't want to let you know
I, I
Drown in your memory
I, I
Don't want to let this go
I, I
Don't....
Making my way downtown
Walking fast
Faces pass
And I'm home-bound
Staring blankly ahead
Just making my way
Making a way
Through the crowd
And I still need you
And I still miss you
And now I wonder....
If I could fall into the sky
Do you think time would pass us by?
'Cause you know I'd walk a thousand miles
If I could just see you...
If I could fall into the sky
Do you think time would pass me by?
'Cause you know I'd walk a thousand miles
If I could just see you
If I could just hold you tonight

"What's Up"
Twenty-five years and my life is still
Trying to get up that great big hill of hope
For a destination
I realized quickly when I knew I should
That the world was made up of this brotherhood of man
For whatever that means
And so I cry sometimes
When I'm lying in bed
Just to get it all out
What's in my head
And I, I am feeling a little peculiar
And so I wake in the morning
And I step outside
And I take a deep breath and I get real high
And I scream from the top of my lungs
What's going on?
[2x]
And I say, hey hey hey hey
I said hey, what's going on?
Ooh, ooh ooh
And I try, oh my god do I try
I try all the time
In this institution
And I pray, oh my god do I pray
I pray every single day
For a revolution
And so I cry sometimes
When I'm lying in bed
Just to get it all out
What's in my head
And I, I am feeling a little peculiar
And so I wake in the morning
And I step outside
And I take a deep breath and I get real high
And I scream from the top of my lungs
What's going on?
[2x]
And I say, hey hey hey hey
I said hey, what's going on?
Twenty-five years and my life is still
Trying to get up that great big hill of hope
For a destination

I just had to stop by on this comment section. From the other ‘Four songs’ series, this might be the list with the most songs I’m familiar with, and moreover much fond of. This tracklist probably shows how ‘classic’ my taste in music is. First of all, The Cranberries is one of my parents’ favorite band, the recent news about Dolores’ death made my family mourn very much. Next, the oh-so-familiar, A Thousand Miles. People be lying if they’ve never heard the iconic piano intro to the song. Then, the third song, "I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)" is also one of those classics, that’s been featured in many movies, including movies that I’ve watched. I also liked the cover version of this song, by the band Sleeping At Last – you probably should give it a listen. Lastly, the song “Whats Up”. This song is another timeless classic, a song that you wouldn’t be able to resist to not sing along when you hear it.
ReplyDeleteThe Cranberries’ “Linger“ is one of the most recognisable tunes of the 90s, and my personal favourite of the Northern Irish band. My old man and me had this one iPod that was filled with songs from the 90s, and this song was in it as well. The song really does bring back memories of my childhood, during the days that I started to explore the kind of music that I am really into; it turned out that I like every type of music as long as it is good. “Linger” was also one of the first songs that I learned to play on the guitar. The song is brilliantly arranged with a mixture of acoustic and rock kind of vibe; slightly distinct from most songs at its era. The song started off the recognition from the public of Dolores O’Riordan’s iconic raspy voice, The Cranberries’ main characteristic.
ReplyDeleteRest in peace Dolores, your music will forever be alive.
In my point of view, the first song, “Linger” by The Cranberries, has a really unique concept of the music video. It shot in grayscale, usually music video use variety of colours. Based on my research, I know that the music video for "Linger" is a tribute to Jean-Luc Godard's 1965 science fiction noir film Alphaville. The music video recorded at a room of a hotel, at that room a silent film is being shown which features 1950s stripper Blaze Starr. About the song, "Linger" is a song composed by Irish musicians Dolores O'Riordan and Noel Hogan of the rock band The Cranberries. It was released in 1993. This song remained in the Billboard Hot 100 for 24 weeks. O'Riordan, the composer, said that this song is about her first serious kiss in the documentary '99 Love Life & Rock 'n' Roll. But then, it turned into a song of regret based on a soldier she once fell in love with.

Ah, I know the second song, “A Thousand Miles” by Vanessa Carlton. Finally, there is a song I know in “Four Songs” article! I think this song is quite famous in the past, because I am really familiar with this song. So this song is the debut single, it was written and recorded by American pop singer, her name is Vanessa Carlton. “A Thousand Miles” was released as the lead single for Carlton's album Be Not Nobody (2002). The song had widespread success worldwide, that’s explain why I am familiar with this song. It reaching number one in Australia, where it was most successful. Not only in Australia, it also reaching the top five in Ireland, and the top ten in the United Kingdom, France, Italy, and the Netherlands. This song also has been covered by numerous artists, including Icarus the Owl, Victoria Justice, David Archuleta, and the Glee Cast. It has also been sampled by T.I. and Cheryl Cole.

I listened to the last song, "What's Up" by 4 Non Blondes, and I was like “OHHH, I know this song!” Then I remembered that this is one song that my grandpa and perhaps, grandma like. Not their favourites since my grandpa loves country song, but they still like this song. I listened to this song many times when I was still in elementary school. I even memorised some of the lyrics, not much, maybe only the refrain, but still it counts as memorising the lyrics, right? Ah, you make me miss my grandpa, sir! So, based on my research, I found out from Wikipedia that "What's Up?" is a song by American rock group 4 Non Blondes from their 1992 debut album, Bigger, Better, Faster, More! It was released as the album's second single in 1993. It was successful in the United States and in several European countries. It peaking at number one in Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Germany, Iceland, Ireland, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Sweden, and Switzerland. That’s explain why my grandparent know and like this song.
ReplyDeleteOnce again, four songs series post always get my attention. I recognize the song by Vannesa Carlton with the title of "A Thousand Miles" and also the song "What's Up" by Non Blondes. I think I know The Proclaimers' "I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)" but I'm not really familiar with it. So, I know the second song of the list through memes, and a movie called "White Chicks" which such an old movie yet I still remember some of its moments. I watch the music video not long ago, and I just found out what the song and video really mean. It has such saddening meaning yet the melodic is very cheerful. For "What's Up", I knew this song through a cover by Seo Hyun (SNSD) in one of Korea variety shows and I spent a moth loving this song. Even though the lyrics are depressing, I believe the music has some power that can lift up my spirit. That's why I loved this song in the past year.
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing your music to this English Writing Skills blog, Mr Adrian. Here, I want to give my thoughts on the second video which titled “A Thousand Miles” by Vanessa Carlton. I thought this song is different from the “A Thousand Miles” that I usually listen, because what I usually listen is sung by Boyce Avenue which evidently is a cover from Vanessa Carlton. I am not sure who is the first singer of this song but I searched on google and it says that the Vanessa Carlton’s version came out in 2001. The thing that surprised me is even though I usually listen from Boyce Avenue version, it is still sound just like the version of Vanessa Carlton. I mean, Vanessa Carlton’s way on singing it really attached on the song. Boyce Avenue and Vanessa Carlton are artists; meaning they could intrepet the artwork to their taste. But, this song has its character and it is interesting!
ReplyDeleteI would express my point of view about the first song, Linger by the cranberries. This is my first time I hear that song, and I think it is pop genre but they include some classic instruments like strings, violin, combine with band instruments. It will look so nice if there is some arrangement on the orchestra in linger song because the special parts of this rhythm are on the melodic line, which has a variety leads inside the music. The progression is not hard to find, it is 1-4-5m-4 on the reff, and for each part, it uses 1-5/7-7b-4/6, which is on the key of C, it will be C-G/B-C7-F/A. I also remember one song from ABBA which is Dancing Queen song because some of the instruments are the same. The singer sang it very well, it was smooth and unique and she could express the song like struggling about someone and I feel that by hearing the rhythm and see from the lyrics
ReplyDeleteI know the second song also, A thousand miles by Vanessa Carlton. I knew this song when I was 12th years old in white chicks movie. I think this song is very popular. What makes me adore with this song is the piano instrument on the intro section. It is very rare to find a song like that. It needs for a several minutes to find the intro parts. Actually, the lead is simple but it sounds so arduous, that’s why it is hard to find the intro. For each parts, mostly use The 4-5-1 progression chords with some variation in some chords, like adding additional 9th or 7th note. See from the lyrics, this song tells about amazement for someone who makes him or her fall in love. It also appears on their music video, which shows the walking piano and express like “a thousand miles” far away from that beginning place.
ReplyDeleteI was surprised when Mr. Adrian played the song “Linger” by The Cranberries as i walked in the class during the prayer break. I have loved this song since a long time ago but it was hard to find a friend that recognize the song too. But after reading the comments above, now i found other people that knows and can even sing some of it verse too! Another song that i recognized in the post is “A thousand miles” by Vanessa Carlton, but it is not a song that i adore as much as i adore “Linger”. The first time i found out the song “Linger” was from the movie Click that featured Adam Levine and Kate Beckinsale as the main casts. The song was played to describe their first meet in the movie. From then, i found the song very catchy and i decided to listen to it on some other time.
ReplyDeleteThe song “A Thousand Milles” by Vanessa Carlton is one of the songs that if you hear it no matter what you have to sing. I first heard that song from one of my favorite comedy movie called “White Chicks”. In that movie Terry Crews’s character sang every lyric to that song in the car when the so called girl played it in the radio in hoping that it would turn him off. Instead, he became delighted and jam out. It appeared in other movies too but that one is the most memorable. The song is about missing the significant other and the willingness to sacrifice everything to see him/her. She said she is going to walk a thousand miles just to see him. That is a hyperbole and for me personally i would not do that i just rather go on a plane or train or bus and sleep.
ReplyDeleteHonestly, this ‘Four Songs’ series are not the songs that I am familiar with. I didn’t know the songs above except for ‘A Thousand Miles’ by Vanessa Carlton. I know the song from the movie ‘White Chicks’. However, it has played in lots of movies. ‘A Thousand Miles’ became Carlton’s breakthrough hit and one of the most popular songs of the year. The song describes the feeling of anyone who has lost someone they really loved. It is about a person who is in an untouchable world because of the pain they have from their loss. You can hear how sad she is with the words and how crushed she is. Although this song is not considered as a happy song and the meaning of the song is not very cheery, the way she sing, as well as the instrumentals, makes it become one of the songs to sing to when you feel happy.
ReplyDeleteFrom the songs above, I know 2 out of 4 songs. “ A Thousand Miles” by Vanessa Carlton and “Linger” by The Cranberries are the song that I know. Linger by The Cranberries is the song that I’m going to talk about. The Cranberries is one of my favourite rock bands, I started to listen to Cranberries since I was 10 years old. It is because of my parents who always attended to this band, it made me like this band. The Cranberries are an Irish rock band formed in Limerick in 1989 by lead singer Niall Quinn, guitarist Noel Hogan, bassist Mike Hogan, and drummer Fergal Lawler. Quinn was replaced as lead singer by Dolores O'Riordan in 1990. I have watched The Cranberries live in 2012 at Taman Impian Jaya Ancol, Jakarta. The concert was so amazing and the vocalist, Dolores O’Riordan made me goosebumps because of her voice that had a unique character.
