Interesting Video

  1. Starting from the beginning, this video already caught my attention. Not only that the animation is interesting but also the topic, genetic engineering. I’ve always imagine myself being modified into a superhuman using genetic engineering. But days past, my imagination starts to decrease, and I wonder would it logically be possible. After watching this video, i started to believe that this is possible. It was even mentioned in the video, “the creation of modified humans-designer babies”. So then it is possible that in the near future there will be a time where we humans can be modified into a more powerful being. But somehow this fact creeps me out. The fact that we can easily modify ourselves into something more than who we are today. Wouldn't then people fight for it? Wouldn't there be conflict? Wouldn't a new disease attack us humans from adapting to our new system? There are so many questions that need to be asked before this is done. So I would ask, is it really needed to genetically modify humans? Aren't we enough? We would definitely never be perfect.

  2. Seeing this video, it opened my mind that technology has developed very well. We can see that even babies can be made by technology. Basically, technology can do it all. Starting from extracting DNA, making everything based on your need and fond, and even make your ancestry. Well, seeing that technology has developed very well is a good thing, because, everything is becoming easy and reachable. However, having a very advanced technology also comes with the risk it brings. First risk is that when you replace everything with technology, human resource will be reduced and make unemployment higher. Unemployment is a dangerous thing because it will lead to some criminality that will harm the country. Second risk is also technology is not always 100% accurate and safe, and talking about human being is a dangerous thing when it all replaced by technology. For example, when the baby become unhealthy because of the technology that made them.

  3. Development in technology increase the possibilities do do crazy thing, one of the crazy ideas that we’ve had back then is a perfect person where people always says that everyone have a flaws. But due to the fact that babies now can be engineered as what the parents want their children to be. I wonder if this technology existed long before us , me myself might the person that get the advantage of this new breakthrough to a better generation in the future. For me personally it can break the stigma where the future generation might be the one who destroys this world, this can close the room of error in the future not fully eliminate the possibilities that they will be worst and worst generation ahead. Because genetic is not the only factors that can affect how they will have an impact in this world in the future, their characteristics also determine how they will do in the future. As characteristics is more difficult to be shape and control.

  4. First of all, I found this video very interesting. I think that some aspects of genetic engineering are very positive. For example, the fact that it could eliminate the worst diseases such as HIV or cancer. However, I think that further use of genetic engineering could be very unethical. I believe that creating “superhumans” is not correct and will lead to more inequalities that there already are. Some countries would benefit from this more than others and it would increase the gap between the most developed and least developed countries. Moreover, inside a same country, the richest could use genetic transformations to create “perfect children” that would be smarter or in better shape physically than normal children. Therefore, genetically modified children would have better chances to succeed than the others and increase even more the inequalities.
Fighting against aging could also have a negative impact. With people living thousands of years as suggested in the video, the world population would keep growing and the earth would become overcrowded, leading to environmental catastrophes.

  5. Right after I see the post I instantly click on it because I am actually subscribed to that channel before I even watch this video. After I watch the video I am really amazed of how the technology has evolved and now that we can actually design what our babies going to be like which before it was only in the movies and in our imagination. Basically I am really excited this kind of thing but the problem is if we were to create genetically modified humans I suppose it wouldn’t be all good news for everybody cause from what I learn whenever there is a good news there will always be a bad news too and in this kind of thing the problem would be that we have to adapt our surroundings or our environment to fit the new genetically modified human and not just that but also the medicine we have already developed for many years.

  6. This video pulls out a very interesting discussion, in both scientific and moral views. Genetic modification in the DNA is a significant scientific milestone. Genetic modification is the what people a decade ago would say is borderline sci-fi story, and now it is possible and comes with a respectably high cost. Morally speaking, there is a feeling of committing an atrocity when modifying a child to our liking. I remember I learned about this in high school and it does essentially allow us to "build" a baby. On one hand it seems a bit awful to do something like this as it violates an occurrence which is natural , however genetic modification can help babies who are diagnosed with diseases. The diseases are usually related to physical defects or perhaps a something contracted from the mother whilst in the womb. I think it would be interesting to see the development of genetic modification in the next few years.

  7. This video gives me a little bit feeling of wonder about how far we as a human being have come. We now already in the stage where we can control how a being grow and create a genetically modify human. This technology certainly will give human a lot of benefit that we only can think as a science fiction straight out of a movie. But there will be problem we will face when this technology become a norm in our society. When the first genetically modify human born some people will reject it and condemn it since some people think we essentially playing gods or it’s not ethical. This will lead to social and political problem that dividing people all over the world. This kind of technology also has capability to create biological based weapon that military will happily made if there are no rules made about it. Even the military can’t make weapon, the military will use this technology to create a super soldier from it.

  8. The video shows that no matter how far humanity has travelled, its dream only gets bigger and bigger to a point where it would seek for perfection in all aspects of life, including a development of the perfect human. With the whole science community united, every mind has been focused on the single broad objective of improving the welfare of the Earth’s population. Despite the continuing bad criticisms that many scientists have received upon their journey, they don’t stop these scientists from going further and further on in their researches and experiments. Scientists would experiment implementing or transferring DNAs onto mice and plants, in order to record the different changes that take place in the genetic characteristics of those subjects. The sacrifices of these scientists as well as the subjects who have contributed their whole life to the experiments are the fuel that has taken humanity to great lengths of breath-taking innovations. Even if I agree with the whole thing, I have to criticise the way science has driven some scientists mad to an extent that they no longer listen to the reminders of their fellow scientists. I’m talking about those scientists who would go as far as going against the set of rules that science itself has imposed on humanity upon discovering it. Also, this set of rules that I’m talking about is how there are only two sexes according to science. However, what have many left-wing scientists tried to achieve? Create methods that would help people switch sexes, and then call them science. Although they are indeed science, this type of science causes only further sufferings to the people who have decided to undergo surgeries as a result of those researches and experiments.

Here, a research conducted in Sweden starting from 1973 to 2003 on transsexual people who underwent Sex Reassignment Surgery (SRS), shows how these people who experienced such surgery had a significant increase in mortality rate, in which some of them were caused by cardiovascular diseases. Now I ask, will scientists also seek for ways to justify the follow-up sufferings and mortality by continuing further research and experiments on genetic engineering to prevent cardiovascular diseases from taking place in the bodies of transsexual people who underwent SRS? Without having to answer this, it is clear that the step on which scientists have taken in order to spoil humanity in its unlimited desires have brought them to a wrong direction.

  9. I have watched more than 30 videos from Kurzgesagt and until now I am still very impressed with their colorful, interactive and interesting science videos that they have made for the viewers. This was the longest video I have watched from them and there is just a lot to take in from it. I would say that the genetic engineering has brought a lot of benefits to us humans such as genetically modified food and crops that can kill pests when eaten due to the poison inside which doesn’t harm humans at all and genetically engineering humans to be immune and cured from diseases would be very mind-blowing but engineering DNA to make inhuman humans with powerful muscles, stronger jaws & teeth, etc would certainly cause problems in the future because our definition of humans will change and discrimination or violence against humans who aren’t genetically engineered may happen and these genetically engineered humans may have other ill intentions in the future. I suppose a lot of pros and cons have to be considered first before taking a step further in genetic modification.

  10. In my opinion, the government should not ban the research on genetic engineering or CRISPR (clusters of regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats). By developing CRISPR we can cure a lot of disease, that maybe can’t be cure by other things or we still not find and medication to cure it like HIV or cancer. I think no one want their children sick because of genetic disease. By this genetic engineering or CRISPR we can minimize or maybe stop the disease to get into our children. We can stop genetic disease like hemophilia (which our blood does not clot normally because it lacks sufficient blood clotting proteins) or thalassemia (which the body makes an abnormal form of hemoglobin). But I think at some point we will need a regulation to control the genetic engineering, we all want that genetic engineering can help us to solve our problem not making other problem. We still want to consider the ethical issues about genetic engineering.

    1. I always interested on technology development. As mentioned on the video, I agree that even a lot of people think this new ideas are scary and maybe banned them, but when people all around the world use it they will try to use it, like online shopping. This video, made by Kurzgesagt - In a Nutshell channel on YouTube, have the best animation and also colorful. How they explain the material is easy to understand and also not boring. I like how they manage to entertain their viewer but at same time they can educate them as well. Not many YouTube channel like this that prefer quality over quantity, like written on Kurzgesagt channel. In Indonesia we have channel like Kurzgesagt, named ‘Kok Bisa?’. They make a video answering people question, like ‘Which one came first, egg or chicken?’ or ‘why we feel our returning journey is faster, even though the distance are the same?’.
