Online, English has become a common language for users from around the world. In the process, the language itself is changing.
When America emerged from the ashes of a bruising war with Britain in 1814, the nation was far from united. Noah Webster thought that a common language would bring people together and help create a new identity that would make the country truly independent of the British.
Webster's dictionary, now in its 11th edition, adopted the Americanised spellings familiar today - er instead of re in theatre, dropping the u from colour, and losing the double l from words such as traveller. It also documented new words that were uniquely American such as skunk, opossum, hickory, squash and chowder.
An American Dictionary of the English Language took 18 years to complete and Webster learned 26 other languages in order to research the etymology of its 70,000 entries.
The internet is creating a similar language evolution, but at a much faster pace.
There are now thought to be some 4.5 billion web pages worldwide. And with half the population of China now on line, many of them are written in Chinese.
Still, some linguists predict that within 10 years English will dominate the internet - but in forms very different to what we accept and recognise as English today.
That's because people who speak English as a second language already outnumber native speakers. And increasingly they use it to communicate with other non-native speakers, particularly on the internet where less attention is paid to grammar and spelling and users don't have to worry about their accent.
"The internet enfranchises people who are not native speakers to use English in significant and meaningful ways," says Naomi Baron, professor of linguistics at American University in Washington DC.
Users of Facebook already socialise in a number of different "Englishes" including Indian English, or Hinglish, Spanglish (Spanish English) and Konglish (Korean English). While these variations have long existed within individual cultures, they're now expanding and comingling online.
"On the internet, all that matters is that people can communicate - nobody has a right to tell them what the language should be," says Baron. "If you can talk Facebook into putting up pages, you have a language that has political and social standing even if it doesn't have much in the way of linguistic uniqueness."
Some words are adaptations of traditional English: In Singlish, or Singaporean English, "blur" means "confused" or "slow": "She came into the conversation late and was blur as a result."
Others combine English words to make something new. In Konglish, "skinship" means intimate physical contact: handholding, touching, caressing.
Technology companies are tapping into the new English variations with products aimed at enabling users to add words that are not already in the English dictionary.
And most large companies have English websites, while smaller businesses are learning that they need a common language - English - to reach global customers.
"While most people don't speak English as their first language, there is a special commercial and social role for English driven by modern forms of entertainment," says Robert Munro, a computational linguist and head of Idibon, a language technology company in California.
"The prevalence of English movies in regions where there is not much technology other than cell phones and DVDs makes English an aspirational language. People think it's the language of the digital age."
In previous centuries, the convergence of cultures and trade led to the emergence of pidgin - a streamlined system of communication that has simple grammatical structure, says Michael Ullman, director of research at Georgetown University's Brain and Language Lab.
When the next generation of pidgin speakers begins to add vocabulary and grammar, it becomes a distinct Creole language. "You get different endings, it's more complex and systematised. Something like that could be happening to English on the web," he says.
Take Hinglish.
Hinglish is a blend of Hindi, Punjabi, Urdu and English and is so widespread that it's even being taught to British diplomats.
Mobile phone companies are also updating their apps to reflect its growing use.
In Hinglish, a co-brother is a brother-in-law; eve-teasing means sexual harassment; an emergency crew responding to a crisis might be described as 'airdashing', and somewhat confusing to football fans, a 'stadium' refers to a bald man with a fringe of hair. There's even a new concept of time - "pre-pone", the opposite of postpone, meaning "to bring something forward".
The increasing prevalence of the internet in everyday life means that language online is not a zero sum game. Instead, it allows multiple languages to flourish.
"Most people actually speak multiple languages - it's less common to only speak one," says Mr Munro. "English has taken its place as the world's lingua franca, but it's not pushing out other languages."
Instead, other languages are pushing their way into English, and in the process creating something new.
I can’t help it when someone is forced to learn English. Yes, I know that English became the global language that everyone agreed on, but isn’t that only because the United State declare it to be? All of us know that they contributed in the world war, but that doesn’t make them to have the authority of declaring something global permanently. All of us who aren’t from America, such as Asia, are hard to adapt with these kinds of things, especially with our language that has already been established from way back when we are still in the trading era. But that can’t be helped, it has already been accepted. People have to adapt if they don’t want to, if not, they’ll get left behind by globalization, when foreign people came to Asia to search for works. I myself aren’t worried because I’m used to learn and even speak English, but not so much for those people who aren’t thought English when they’re at school.
ReplyDeleteGrowing up among people of different nationalities it was not as odd as it is to some to hear some of the examples listed above. Its rather frequent that I hear words being used outside of their usual context. At times it can be confusing, and some cases a bit funny. Cases like those listed above seem to me like a way to compromise the actual meaning of a word with how a word would be used with relation to their local dialects. In some cases, the words that were formulated are references to the literal actions, such as the word skinship. I think its wonderful how languages come together to form new words, although they are mostly used exclusively within the local and national spheres. Nevertheless, it might be a way for the English language to evolve and we may never know if the English we use today would be the same English used in the next one hundred years.
ReplyDeleteWe live in a world where the first language is english. Well, it is already like that since we were born, whether we like it or not. And since we live in this world, well for me, I do not want to get left behind, so I have to learn english no matter how hard it is. For me, I believe that it is a compulsory for me to learn english so that I can keep up in this modern globalized world. However, for other people, learning english is not easy. One of the main reason why english is hard to learn is the environment around. When the environment is not supporting to learn english, it will be hard. For me, I got lucky that my environment has been ‘english friendly’ since I was a child. And also, the other factor is because the media to learn english is not easy to get. Therefore, having a media to learn english online is good to help people learn english well.
ReplyDeleteI have seen many friends of mine being very fluent in speaking English by not having any basic academic English skills that are suitable for having fluent English in speaking. The only i thing believe when it comes to people that are able to speak fluent English is that since they were small they are already used to speak English. I have never overcome a certain person that is able to speak fluent English that they get when they are old. This happen because of the capability of humans learning and imitating things such as language are better when they were small rather than when they are old. The answer of my friends when i asked them about how can they be very fluent in speaking English is that they learn it in the internet, games, music. Internet is a very dominant force to help people to learn English self-taught. They are used to the English language in the Internet and also the role of Internet by spreading the flow if music that able people to speak English fluently. The negative of being able to speak English fluently from Internet and Music is that they are very poor in grammar and needs more attention when it comes to academic writing.
ReplyDeleteWhile access to current English books or newspapers may not be easy, you can always use the internet to find content on almost any topic. Practise your English language learning by reading books or newspaper articles, listening to the radio or podcasts and by watching streaming videos of TV and film.
ReplyDelete-A classroom without walls
You can use the internet to shape your language studies. If you’re learning English to go on holiday, for example, you can look up detailed information about the place that you’ll be visiting. Or if you’re learning English for your career, you can find out more about the sector you work in, including common words and phrases, and industry-specific terminology.
-Open culture
One of the most significant advantages of using the internet to support your language learning is how much it can help you understand the culture of another country. This is especially true when it comes to watching video online. Watching the news, including sports coverage, or favorite TV shows can help you see the world through the eyes of another country and give you an insight into how its culture differs from your own.
It is known that English is spoken as a first language by around 400 million people around earth, hence English is the most commonly spoken language in the world. I’ve learned English since my early days. My grandmother who is a literature lecturer, used to tell me how I share the same interest in literary. My parents then also encouraged me to take English courses, and they also provided me with English children books, and television shows in English. But I guess the main reason why my English skills got better was when I met the internet. The internet is filled with thousands of information which they are mostly in English. Consequently, I had to find out what everything meant by myself. This way, I can learn more about the world by understanding the language they speak. I’m not saying English is an easy language, but people who can speak English most probably has easier lives.
ReplyDeleteLearning English online is one of the methods for people to study the language. When I was young, I used to play games a lot. Since I met people from around the world, I was forced to learn English. However, it does not stress me out because I am learning English and playing games at the same time, so the burden of learning new things is being covered up by the enjoyment of playing games. I learned new words and many things because I also ask my friends that have more knowledge than me. I also agree with baron about people not caring about the grammar or how a person spells a word. Some people are too lazy to delete their word and retype it and there are also slang words that is being used online. I also agree that many people create new words to shorten things and makes it easier for people to communicate with each other.
ReplyDeleteEnglish language is an international language that almost all countries in the world use. Usually, people are required to learn their country’s language and English language. Learning a new language is not easy. It takes time to develop it correctly. After learning a new language, it is better that you maintain your ability to speak that language. Personally, I think I have never learned English from the internet. When I was small, my mother gave me childhood TV programs in English. From that, my mother realize that I can keep up quite good. How I maintain the ability to speak English is by using it frequently at home. My mother is an English teacher, so we speak English a lot of times. It is hard to develop the ability to speak a new language fluently. But when you have it, keep using it a few times, so you don’t forget about it. Nowadays, there are many options to learn languages, especially online. But make sure that you are learning the language in a correct way.
ReplyDeleteNo matter where we were born, our first language will be the language our environment and people are using. For me, there are 2 first language, Javanese and Bahasa Indonesia. I was born in Magelang, where a lot of people use Javanese for their everyday language. Actually, they use mixed language between Javanese and Indonesian, but most of them use pure Javanese for their main language. In the world, the percentage of people who speak Indonesian and Javanese is small, only in Indonesia, Suriname (as there is a lot of Javanese back in the Dutch-Indies era who were being taken to Suriname to be a labor), and the rest of the world only contributed a small percentage of Indonesian speakers. The main language of our world is English. As the world walking towards the future, understanding and speaking English is a must for all people around the world. Honestly, i mainly learned and practiced my english in the internet. In the internet, you can greet people from all around the world, so you must speak english to understand each other. As english is being introduced to the world, there is a lot of change in the language itself. A lot of new words is being created as the effect of mixing the english and the local language, and also english is slowly adapting and getting mixed with the local language. As you can see, a lot of millenials in Indonesia are talking by mixing Indonesian and English together as one, and they, and i myself, said that it is more comfortable to mix Indonesian and English together, as there is some English word that can’t be described in Indonesian.
ReplyDeleteThe fact that English is the most used language in the world right now is something that all of us can’t deny. We can’t deny the fact that every part of this world, in each continent, there is at least one country that uses English as their first language. For me, not being able to understand or at least speak in English is a big loss; it would especially be difficult for people to compete at the highest level of business if they lack the skill of speaking in English. Luckily for me, I’ve been exposed to this language since my early age. But what have actually given me a lot of improvement is the internet. In my opinion, internet is right now the best place to learn about everything, not just language. With the internet, I learnt English with the videos I watched from YouTube, reading some articles about football, and even news.
ReplyDeleteWe know that English is very important these days. My parents encourage me to learn english since I was little. They asked me to joined english course such as EF and Wall Street. But now, learning English becomes easy and easier. We don’t have to join formal English courses such as I mentioned it before. I know so many people that are very fluent and very good in English. I thought they learn from an English course, but when I asked them where they learn English from, they don’t say that they join english courses. They say they learn English by reading a novel or watching a movie. And I agree, the best way to learn a language is by reading a book or watching a movie. By that, we can get used to the language and understand the language more easily. It would be such a waste of money and useless if you join a formal English courses but you don’t try to apply it such as try to speak with the language or read a book.
ReplyDeleteI think that english is a very important language, and I think that english is still the undisputed international language for years to come. There are a lot of countries that adopts english as their first language. From I was young, I thought that learning english is not that hard, I learned english when I was little mainly from video games, and sometimes from watching cable tv. In today’s world, I think having to know and speak english is a very important aspect in life. Because, english is used in business and education more frequently now than ever before. The fact, that there are english languages that are mixed with national language is something unique, for example singlish, which is Singapore english that are adopted by Singaporean. But, I think the bad example of mixing languages, can be found in today’s trend of some South Jakartans people who basically mixed Indonesian with English, which is very funny if you heard or saw it.
ReplyDeleteNowadays, we do not need to join formal English courses in order to learn English. We can now learn English from the internet. For example, by having a friend whose mother tongue is English, we can practice and even improve our vocabulary because talking to them forces us the non-native English speaker to continuously translate what they are saying so that we can understand. We can also learn English by watching videos or films that uses the English language. This is a good method for those who are an auditory learner because they get to hear how the words are correctly pronounced. Another effective method to learn English from the internet is to listen to English songs. This method is proven effective by many people because I have come across many people who are fluent in English and admit that they learn the language by listening to music. This is a fun way to learn a new language because we can enjoy the music while studying a foreign language at the same time.
ReplyDeleteEnglish is very important in this world. When we want to develop ourselves and have a bigger chance on everything, for example works, connections, and also life, English is a must. It is a must because it is the number one language in this world and that is a very common language in this world. When you want to achieve better things, you have to be able to speak english. Well, back then, the problem is that the media to learn english is not easy to find. Learning english need high costs and special arrangements. Well now, we can see that learning english is easy and can be through anything. Probably back then, you have to hired a proffesional teacher and pay them a lot. But now, simply we can learn english online from the internet. It is very simple and easy to access, so that English can reach wider citizens and will be easier to reach.
ReplyDeleteI personally have a thought that English is a very important language that everyone basically should be able to use it in daily life. As we all know, English has become our universal language, so it will be very hard for somebody if they do not really understand English language and also for those who do not learn it since at the very beginning. The good thing is, nowadays people can learn English without having to waste a lot of time and energy because we basically can just learn it from the internet. People do not have to take the English course to be able to speak English fluently. For instance, it is very easy now to find web site on the internet to learn English or simply just search the video on You Tube to hear the explanation about it. The point is, there are so many things that we can do on the internet to learn English that we do not really need to take the course anymore and with this technological development we should use it maximally.
ReplyDeleteFor me, learning English is really needed. And because my parents also realize that, they asked me to join English course since I was just a little. I have learned English by taking the English course since I was in elementary school. Because at that time the technology wasn’t that sophisticated, so I joined the formal English course. I remember, I learned it started from the simplest vocabulary in a course that was just placed in my neighbor’s house but then as I grew up, my parents took me to more serious English course such as ELTI, ILP, and English First. But then, because I was really busy with school tasks in the second grader of senior high school, I stopped taking the English course formally. But I didn’t fully stop learning it because I still read some novels or books and I also watched movies with English subtitle so that I could improve my English skill even though I didn’t learn it formally. I also tried some online chatting such as Omegle on the internet to train myself talking directly to the foreigner.
ReplyDeleteI have and am experiencing the new English era as I have been using English for my daily conversations with my friends and other people for about eight to nine years. If I have to state it, I prefer speaking in English than Indonesia because for some reason I know more English vocabularies than Indonesian vocabularies because I went to an international school for eight years in the past. I feel like I can express myself both in written and verbal way better than using Indonesian because it just feels like the language connects to me more in ways even I don’t understand. This is maybe because I’ve been too Westernized by Western cartoons, videos and movies that even my accent also follows the American accent with American slangs used every now and then. I’m not saying I dislike my own mother-tongue language because there are some ways I can express myself precisely in Indonesian than English. Thus, I mix both English and Indonesian in my everyday conversations just like the stereotypical South Jakarta citizens.
ReplyDeleteEnglish is the most commonly known language in the world. People from various countries use English as a way to communicate with other people internationally. Some uses English as their first language, others use English as their second. I personally find English as a fun language because my early years of knowing English was by playing games and watch cartoons. Although it was not an easy language to master at that time because of it’s vocabularies that is so broad, but being able to understand the game that I was playing and the cartoons that I was watching made me feel satisfied back then. Nowadays the use of internet is so easy. The majority of people that are using the internet use English to communicate to each other. I often found myself learning new vocabularies by just browsing the internet in one day. Internet has no boundaries and it is up to the user on whether he/she wants see the positive or the negative sides of the internet.
ReplyDeleteI also wanted to share a story of the good use of internet for studying English. There is this famous rapper from Indonesia named Rich Brian. Before he’s famous and started to travel around the world to do concerts, he used to live in Indonesia. Correct me if I’m wrong, but from what I’ve heard he learns English by watching videos on a website called ‘Youtube’. By just watching ‘Youtube’ over and over and do home-schooling he was able to master English and speak English like a native speaker. This is one of good examples on how you should use the most out of the Internet to a good use. Like I said before, Internet provides us with information that are beyond limit. We have to be clever in sorting out on what’s good and what’s bad so that we can absorb the useful information and throw away the useless ones.
DeleteInternet are changing humanity faster than ever. With the ability to write, communicate, and share with anyone on any side of the globe, it is no surprise that knowledge are added and shared very quickly on the internet. Almost everyone across the globe have access to the internet. This made it very much possible for individuals with different cultural background to meet and exchange knowledge on the internet. The article stated that the reason why internet is changing English is because the number of people who speak English as a second language already outnumber the native English Speakers. Aside from the fact that Internet is changing English, I also notice one phenomenon that have been occurring more frequently due to the influence of Internet which is code switching. Code switching does not only happen orally for it happens frequently during chat. Based on my observation, code switching happens a lot to individuals who learn english as their second language.
ReplyDeleteNon-native speakers have been learning the English language through media ever since globalization and people started importing and sharing their things with one another. For people to learn English through the Internet is nothing new. I think that the reason why people have been able to learn English faster is because of the internet. Although I didn’t learn English entirely from the Internet, I was able to improve my writing and reading skills greatly as I spent my time on the web. I read articles that used formal language and communicated and read people’s comments and opinions that were written in informal language through online communities and social media. It’s much easier (and cheaper) to learn English through there because you get to learn both the formal matters of English and slang and casual language native speakers and non-native speakers use. I don’t think slang and the combination of languages like ‘Singlish’ is bad at all, as they come from a combinations of cultures mixing together.
ReplyDeleteIn this globalised and digitalised world, we tend to rely every aspects of our life to be assisted with technology and internet even the extreme measure is entirely taken over by those technological advancement. This technological advancement make things much easier also in educational aspect, as internet availability is utilised such as for learning new things. As all things or information are available in the internet and can help us to learn things easier as we can learn by our own. It will take less time and energy to learn something through internet as we learn from anywhere and whenever we want to independently. But there is a downside from this trend, as we learn anything from the internet independently so there are larger room for error as our understanding based on our individual interpretations. It might be right or wrong and we have no other references as in school we can ask our teacher if there are any problem in this understanding the materials.
ReplyDeleteI would like to discuss new insight that I learned from a theory called "network effects". Basically networks effect is a theory in business that says users gain value from others using the same network, the more people that join the more value for everyone else. For example, when a person chooses to learn a particular language they are not just generating value for themselves but also some of the value is being externalized to everyone else who is using that network, as they now have more communications options available to them due to this positive externality. Five generations ago none of our ancestors spoke English but we’re all speak English now. We speak English because we want to be understood by everybody else, if you were living in the year 1500’s and could have been Latin, or if in the 1800’s Napoleon finished his conquest the language of the world could have been France not English. And now while language itself is a network effects, internet is the modern manifestation of network effects; so yeah what can I say, it's a double network effects causing people adapt it more and more and more.
