Cats v Dogs

Cats vs dogs: Scientists confirm that felines are better... from an evolutionary perspective*

It’s the debate that has long divided animal lovers. Now scientists have confirmed that cats really are better than dogs – at least from an evolutionary perspective.

A groundbreaking study of 2,000 ancient fossils reveals that felids – the cat family – have historically been much better at surviving than the “canid” dog clan, and often at the latter’s expense.

The research finds that cats have played a significant role in making 40 dog species extinct, outcompeting them for scarce food supplies because they are generally more effective hunters. But researchers found no evidence that dogs have wiped out a single cat species.

The dog family – which includes the wolves from which today’s domesticated dogs are descended – originated in North America about 40 million years ago and reached a maximum diversity around 20 million years later, when there were more than 30 species on the continent. At that point, the cat family arrived from Asia.

“The arrival of cats to North America had a deadly impact on the diversity of the dog family. We usually expect changes in climate to play the overwhelming role in the evolution of species. Instead, competition among different carnivore species proved to be even more important for the dogs,” said the report’s lead author, Dr Daniele Silvestro, of the University of Lausanne in Switzerland.

The influx of cats prompted a period of dramatic decline among the dog clan. This has left North America with just nine species of wild dog today, comprising different variations of wolves and foxes, according to the fossil analysis published in the journal PNAS.

Dr Silvestro says it is unclear exactly why, when times were tough, the cats were able to see off dogs so comprehensively. But he believed it could be something to do with the retractable claws that ancient cats have passed down to their domesticated descendants, but which dogs don’t have.

Millions of years ago, some dog species, such as wolves, were effective killing machines, chasing down their prey at high speed and devouring it. All surviving dog species fall into this “runner” camp.

But other dog species ambushed their prey in a manner similar to the cat family. However, these dogs weren’t as good as the cats at this technique – and all the canid species who used it are now extinct.

Dr Silvestro explained: “The cats have retractable claws which they only pull out when they catch their prey. This means they don’t wear them out and they can keep them sharp. But the dogs can’t do this, so they are at a disadvantage to the cats in an ambush situation.”

The evolutionary success of carnivorous animals is strongly linked to their ability to obtain food, meaning that there can be significant competition for prey when there is insufficient supply for the population.

“Felids must have been more efficient predators than most of the extinct species in the dog family,” the report concluded.

  1. I both like cats and dogs. It depends on what sort of pets you're looking for. If you want active socialisation, get a dog. Dogs need their pack; they listen to their companions for direction and company. They must be actively engaged with, or they often become neurotic. Certain breeds need very intensive interaction. Huskies, shepherds, and other working breeds need jobs to do and can be very destructive if they don't have one.

If you prefer passive socialisation, cats are better. While most of them can be trained to some extent, they don't need the intensive training that dogs do. They keep themselves clean, and can generally entertain themselves for hours at a time. They miss you when you're gone but don't mind if you leave. They'll demand affection on their terms, and often prefer to only be near the person they like best, hanging out on the back of a chair or the other end of a couch.

  2. Cat versus dog have always been a big subject of debate, we can see that with the apparition of term like to be a “cat person” or a “dog person”, no other similar debate on animal exit from what I know. Cat and dog are both loveable on their own way, Cat are more snobbish and posh but also clumsily and fluffy that make them really adorable, and also perfect to warm your bed during winter. Dog are more friendly and general, always here to jump on you and give you affection when you come back to your house, and also help you to exercise and go out as you need to walk them several times a day. I am personally more a cat person, they are independent but also lazy, and can spent hours doing nothing on the sun and always here to make you laugh with their weird clumsy behaviour.

  3. I must say, another thing that makes me miss home other than the comfort of the people... is the animals. I currently have 4 cats at home. Uniquely, all of them are named by names of biscuits. Not to disfavor other ones aside, but my favorite cat is Oreo. He’s the biggest, the fluffiest of them. His fur is colored black and white, alas the name. Unfortunately, just 2 weeks ago, he was hit by a random car exactly in front of my house. He didn’t die thankfully. We were all devastated, Oreo had to undergo a surgery right away. We know later that some of his bones were fractured, and the crash also had affects to his brain. He went to specialized vets to get checked up. Until now, he’s still on lots of medication. The accident didn’t just affect him physically, but he also was affected mentally. He used to be this loud, active cat, and now he’s much calmer and he refused to eat his meals. We love our cats very dearly, and we treat them just like another child in the family. Please do pray for the recovery of my poor, poor cat. :(
*Sorry Mr. Adrian, I just had to add a sad emoticon.

  4. I won’t disagree that cats are better in an evolutionary perspective and that they do have some positive advantages. However, with all my respect Mr. Adrian, I love dogs with all my heart. Curiously, I just went to the cinema to watch Alpha, a movie about a prehistoric teen who forms the first human-canine bond with a wolf. I really like it and I end up nostalgic, missing my dogs. Back home in El Salvador, I have four dogs. Two French Puddles, one Yorkshire Terrier and my princess: a Husky. The two French Puddles are the kids from my first dog that died last year. My sister got the Yorkshire just after her death (my first dog), when I still was in Germany. My siblings and I bought the Husky with our savings when my parents were out of the country. My parents were so angry at us, however, when they came back they fall in love with her. She is my running partner and every night when my parents are sleeping she sneak into my room. Some weeks ago, I found a study explaining that a canine companion is good for human health and dog owners have a lower risk of death due to cardiovascular disease.

  5. I am more on the cat side; I have six cats living, breathing, and pooping all over my house back home. I cherish their presence very much and beloved them soo dearly. I can be soft overtly just by looking and playing with them. The dominant and my personal favourite cat is the big one, the father of four kittens. He is named after another animal for no reason: Kuskus.

My utmost love for my cats has been used as the transcendent way for my parents to bait me to go back home. They will send tons of pictures and video messages of cats at home to convince me to come back to Jakarta.

Unfortunately, my parents are being overwhelmed to take care of six cats, so they are planning to give the cats at home to their new homes which makes me sad to let go of those lovable furry friends.

    :(

  6. If i have to choosebetween cat or dog, i choose both of it, because each animal has its own plus and minus. Dog is a much smarter animal. For example, we can teach a dog tobsit, to shake our hand, or maybe to do something else. But dog is actially create more noise than cat. It sometimes bark too much. The bigger the dog the louder the bark. The opposite, cat, is more calm and silent. It doesn't make a lot of noise, except when it comes to the breeding session or maybe if they fight against other cats. But, cat isbless likely to play with us, and some cats are like to flee from its owner. Unfortunately, i have an allergic to cat's fur. Sometimes, when i touched a cat, seconds later i sneeze. I always sneeze when i touched it, so, i can't play much with a cat. One more i think, if we have a puppy, we have to train it first , so it can poop or pee on the outside of the house, but for cat, we din't have to train it because it already know that they have to do it outside.

  7. Despite of its weaker evolution to cats, I personally think that dogs are way better. I used to have a neighbor owning more than ten cats released all over the house. It was furs everywhere and cats blocking my way because they love to lazily sleeping everywhere. They rarely run and walk so slowly, which shows how a very inactive animal they are. I got no experience of having cats other than this, though. It might be my neighbor was a reckless pet caretaker or the other factors that create those bad impressions in me. Otherwise, I have also had a dog for several years and stayed in my cousin owning a lot of dogs. It was nice seeing them running and hopping, happily approaching me when I came by. The best thing is when you throw foods or something interesting for dogs and they ran away trying to catch them, which brings some kind of excitement towards myself. Those are all my personal thoughts about cats and dogs based on my very limited experience having both animals.

  8. Well, if you ask me which is better between dogs and cats, I would answer that it is relative. Why? Because both pets have their own advantages and disadvantages. For social aspects, I personally thinks dogs are better. For its ability, I prefer cats. I have a dog at home, his name is Brownie, a mix of corgi and mutt. There are a lot of things I love about him such as his loyalty, how he wags his tail when I went back home, his cute bark and others. In advance, I could say that dogs provide companionship and company. They can be a comfort to people who crave unconditional interaction with another living being. According to Vanderbilt University, dogs can decrease levels of human loneliness and give humans a sense of purpose as they care for their animal companions. On other hand, we should not ignore the greatness of cats also. The advantages of cats are that they only need low maintenance, they do not require training, they do not need yard and also popularly for their intelligence. So all in all, dogs and cats have their own uniqueness and better parts.

  9. I can’t choose between cats or dogs. I really like both. I don’t have any pets though, due to a few reasons. My mom doesn’t like animals. She’s just not into pets at all and I don’t understand why. Other than that, my dad, sister, and I are all allergic to fur. We had pets in the past; a cat, hamsters, and a rabbit. And either one of us is always sick when we had our pet. That’s probably why my mom always says no to pets in the house and why we have none right now. But anyway, between cats and dogs, I can’t really choose which one I like better. My dad has always been a dog person. His family had a lot of dogs when he was a child. My sister is also a dog person, even though she never had one. I have no preference between the two, I would love to have either one as a pet. But the closest I got to having a dog as a pet was my best friend’s dogs. She had two Pomeranians, named Cece and Bieber. I loved them so much almost like my own pets. And when me and my best friend were still in the same school, I went to her house so many times and that’s why I got really close with her dogs. In high school, we moved to different schools and I don’t go to her house as much anymore. But one time, a few weeks before I moved to Jogja, I went to her house and played with Cece and Bieber and I was so happy that they still remembered me and was so excited to play with me.

  10. If Tasya can't choose between cats or dogs because she likes both, I also can’t choose between the two of those because I don’t prefer both. In brief, I’m not a pet-lover kind of guy. I’m not against it, but I personally think that I will not be a good pet-owner. Since I consider myself as an extrovert, I prefer to spend most of my free time with friends outside my house. I would not be able to take care of my pets if I have one.

Another reason that I don’t really like dogs is because I have had a bad experience with them when I was a child. I was on my way back home from the football field that afternoon. It was almost sunset and most people were already got back home. On that street, there was only me and one dog that I saw in distance. I felt nervous when being close to dogs but at that time I remember what my friend said, “Try to snap in front of the dogs. Instead of showing your fear, try to make the dog goes away.”

So what I did is I put a scary face on with a little grin on it and bluff forward stomping towards the dog. The outcome was unexpected. The dog got even closer to me and made me fell down. I got up and ran as fast as I could until I slipped for the second time. The dog had successfully managed to bite my leg. It was a nightmare.

  11. Just by reading the the title I know that cats are better than dogs and scientist have proven that it is true at least from the evolutionary perspective. But in reality it is actually a relative thing just like handsomeness or prettynes because everything has its plus and minus so in my opinion everything is actually the same even when you compare human to animals I would say that we are actually the same but that doesn’t mean we are animal okay. So back to cats vs dogs, In my opinion I choose cats maybe because I like cats way more than dogs. That is because I am afraid of dogs. Cats are usually calmer that’s why I like them but dogs just by seeing their mouth I’m already scared of them. Honestly I really want to have a cat but yeah my parents wouldn’t allow me to have one because they think I’m not up for the responsibilities. _Dimas Aditya Permana

  12. In my humble opinion, and don’t take this personal Mr. Adrian, I do believe that dogs are better than cats. To support my opinion, I have some experience regarding those species. First of all traditionally, millennials befriended dogs, in my childhood I had a dog named Hitam. He was our beloving pet and guard dog. He was really protective over our residence, yet for his protective nature someone poisoned him. The point that I want to show is loyalty. I also have experiences with cats, I used to have 6 cats in my household. As time went by, they mated with each other and produced tons of kittens. The next thing I know, my house was dominated by those wicked beings. Yet out of the blue, the 6 original cats left my house and the kittens remained unnurtured. As you can expect, within a couple of days they all died and none lived. My house was littered with files of dead kittens. It was a sight of sorrow yet freedom has finally returned and my house was finally free from those troublemakers.

    1. I agree with Niken, because in my opinion, dogs are way more expressive and loyal than cats. That’s why dogs become a protector in the first place. If I am not mistaken, dogs are descendants of the wolves. By saying that, I intend to mention that dogs have the ability to sense other’s feelings, anxieties, and insecurities. Therefore they tend to be aware of their surroundings. And also I have read articles about dogs capability to sense auras. So in their visibility, it is not just the matter of heat and color, but somehow they are given the gift to sense the packs’ vibes. So in summary I believe that dogs are more able to empathize than cats. I am lucky enough to grow together with a puppy, but unfortunately my dog died a year ago. I was devastated, however I have not seen him often for the past two years before he passed away. So maybe I might not experience the deepest sorrow due to his passing. But I still miss him to this moment. Rest in peace my guy Kili.

    2. I would like to comment on both Paul’s and Niken's comment since share the same thoughts: Dogs are better than cats. Back in Amsterdam my parents had both cats and dogs. The dogs, Monty and Pieter, were always happy to see me and would run to the door as soon as someone rang the doorbell. On the contrary, the cats, Gangster and Forest never seemed to be interested in any human contact. They preferred being in the garden or somewhere in a quite area in the house. Even though I enjoyed having these pets at my parents place, I never thought of having one in my own apartment in both Amsterdam as Jogjakarta. I think they deserve an owner that is able to give them more attention than I can. My irregular schedule makes it hard to give them the care they need and deserve. Maybe one day, when I’m older, I will take a pet though, something like a goldfish I guess.

  13. I personally love both cats and dogs, but I prefer dogs rather than cats. As you know, dogs are man’s best friend. I think dogs are more loyal than cats, and dogs also give you more interaction with them, I thought that cats are more passive. Dogs are also better than cats, because dogs have more role in human’s life, such as guard dog, guide dog, and companion dog. I also believe that dogs are more obedient than cats. At home, I do not have any pets, because my mother is allergic to animal’s fur and there is also no space to have pets, but I always loved it when I met cats or dogs. The debate about dogs vs cats has been around for a while, I still remember, when I was young I used to play this game about cat vs dog battling each other on my computer, that game was legendary. But, I still believe that cats and dogs can live together with humans.

  14. I am very happy to know that cats are better than dogs, at least in an evolutionary perspective, because even though I love both cats and dogs, I am a cat person all the way! I have 3 cats back at home and the 3 of them are all exotic species which are Norwegian Forest, Himalayan and Angora. The Himalayan is the youngest and its fur’s color pallet has a very unique gradation of three to four shades of brown, which inspired us to name him Latte. The Norwegian Forest is the oldest with a gradation of dark gray to white named Timmy. The Angora is the second oldest with few shades of orange and yellow. All of them, regardless their age, are spoiled to the max since they are domesticated but they are very active and loving too. The oldest one really likes to sleep on my lap every time I sit on the sofa and even on my chest when I sleep in bed. The Himalayan likes to do splits; real splits with its back legs. The Angora is like a royal family member because it often prefers to sleep on sofas and beds and not on the floor. I really hope I can get to play with them again soon

  15. Yay! Cats! I heard that you have a lot of cats at home, Sir? I am so proud of you! I mean like, raising a lot of cats, I think, is hard. I only have two cats in my house in Bandung, and they sometimes freak everyone out! My older cat, whose name is Cimew, loves to pee in someone else's bed eventhough his sandbox is always ready for him. I don't know why. I think he just want us to do some extra exercise by washing the bed on weekends. He is a little old now, and now we just like to set him free to go outside so that he can date someone and be happy. It is better than watching him sleeping alone in our house. I used to have a cat called "Neo" because everytime she made a sound it was always "neo, neo" not "meow, meow". Or was it just my imagination? I don't know. We gave her to someone because we realise that we could not raise a female cat. The reason why is that once they're pregnant, it will be too hard to handle all of their children. We could not raise all of them so we decided to find someone who could take care all of them so that they could be together. I miss you Neo. Oh, I also miss Cimew now.

  16. This article is very interesting for me. And i do agree with that. The anatomies, behaviours, and techniques of cats are better than the dogs’. This article raises my willingness to have pets in the future either cats or dogs. Although all of this informatons about the evolution aspect of cats are better than dogs, but at the end if we are looking at what people are going to prefer as their pets, it will be very different results. i think what i or others will choose at the end are depend on our own preference. Because whatever comparison you make about both of them, even in all aspects such as the things and foods they needed; difficulty of taking care the pets; the amount of space and money you need to spend; and etcetera. Most of the people at the end will choose the pets that they like and love the most.

  17. Both cats and dogs are unique in their own way, they have differences that make them stand out from one another. For example, cats are lazier than dogs and dogs are a lot more intelligent than cats. I honestly love them both equally, although I always have a soft spot for dogs. When I was younger I used to prefer cats better than dogs but as I grew older I started to prefer dogs more. My favorite kinds of dogs are corgis and golden retriever. What’s sad though is the fact that I have never knew what it feels like to own any dogs or cats because my mom dislikes them with a passion. She said that they are really hard to take care of and are really smelly. Although it takes a lot of effort to take care of them, I do think it is worth all of the effort. Because, having your pet’s company can bring you a whole other level of bliss. It could also be a stress reliever.

  18. Dogs are the best!!! As a furry pup lover, there is no doubt in my mind that having a dog brings many upsides to my life. I have a dog named Elvys, he is a red-toy poodle. He loves to sit next to me and fall asleep everywhere, like all the time. My favourite part of having a dog is that I can walk him out, I do enjoy spending my time playing with my dog, somehow it makes me genuinely happy. But while owning a dog is a wonderful experience, just make sure you are ready for the responsibility. Please consider that fostering dogs is not that easy, you really need to pay attention to your dogs, make sure they don’t eat anything that is not supposed to eat such as chocolate. You also need to spend money on the dog care: grooming, dog food (it is very pricey), toys, and any other accessories. In the other hand, cat is also adorable, cats do make better pets than dogs since owning a cat is more affordable than owning a dog. Cats are quieter than dogs, and I admit that whenever my dog barks I get so annoyed.

  19. Well, I personally can’t really get close to both cats and dogs so none of them are better for me I think. It’s not because I hate them then I want to kill them but it’s just because I am so afraid of them. Maybe it is so common if someone feel scared of dogs, but for cats, it sounds so silly. But, I really am afraid of them. If you ask me whether cats are cute or not, The answer will be : they are soooooo cute. But if I have to get close to them, touch them, or even keep them as a pet, I would not consider it as a choice that I would choose in my life. Only see them it will be just fine, but not to involve them in my life. For the dogs, I am also afraid of them just simply because of their teeth and their barks. By seeing dogs, I’m just so ready to run to avoid getting bitten by them. Anyway, I personally prefer a hamster instead of dogs or cats.

  20. If somebody ask me which is better among cats and dogs, the answer to the question is that it is depends. It is relative because cats and dogs have their own particular things that either an advantage or disadvantage. I think that dogs are a better animal when it comes to socialize. At home, I have a dog named Barney. Barney is a Golden Retriever. He really is a family dog. He always get excited when me and my family came back home and greeted us with his bark and wiggle his tail. He also keeps me company whenever I’m alone at home. It is hard for me to be far away from him because I feel like I have a special connection with him. I once read that dogs have the ability to diminish the levels of human’s depression and loneliness. They do it by giving humans a feeling of reason to do it as humans take care of them. Dogs can also be a solace to people who desire genuine interaction with another living thing. On the other hand, I believe that cats are more intelligent. The benefits of having a cat is that you don’t need to train the cat and a yard. So it is more cost efficient than having a dog. I believe all animals have their own uniqueness.

  21. I have always wanted to have a dog. It seems like a silly rule in Islam saying that dogs are somewhat disgusting and un-pure which I disagree completely with. All my life I have had many friends who had dogs in their house. At first I was scared because all my life I was taught that they were dangerous and un-pure. Dogs are really the best kind of animals out there though. They are loyal, they can protect you, they like to play a lot, and they always seem to be able to comfort you when you're feeling a bit down. However there comes the issue where the dog might be aggressive and possibly dangerous to the family. Like in 2017 the case where a bulldog attacked a baby in the house, or even my own personal experience when my friend's dog bit me for no reason at all. The dog was usually friendly with me and i never really interacted with him much, but one day he just starts sprinting at me and bit my leg, sadly they had to put him down because of that. So in the end dogs are either extremely good or extremely bad, can't have it in the middle. Cats however are just lazy spoiled brats. However, based on my experience the stray cats you find on the streets are much more playful and warm towards people so, some cats in the end are just as loyal as some dogs. So there really isn't a good or bad, it's all relative.

  22. If I were to choose between cats and dogs, I would easily choose cats. This is mainly because I have three cats in my house back in Jakarta. I actually am allergic to cat fur, but this condition did not stop me on loving those beautiful creatures. The downside effect on having allergy to cats is that if I play with them for too long, I will start to sneeze a lot and rashes start to appear out of nowhere in my skin that touches the cat’s fur. Back in my house, I would easily forget about what I was going to do because of playing with them for hours and hours. I really miss them and luckily, I’ll be seeing those cute faces of my cats soon because later today I’ll be going to Jakarta just to meet my parents and my cats. I can’t wait to hear all of my cats purring.

  23. I’m neither a cat person nor a dog person and in general just not an animal person since I grew up having no pets at all. It’s because my parents are strongly against animals wandering around the house, littering everywhere, making the house unhygienic. Me and my brother asked for a hamster or a cat as a pet when we’re about 6 and 7 but our parents wouldn’t budge our requests as they though we’re too young and irresponsible to raise pets on our own. Ironically, they respectively had various pets at home as a child, from cats, dogs, fishes, parrots to monkeys. Since we’re not allowed to have pets at home, me and my brother would marvel at our friends‘ and neigbours’ pets, up until now. If I were to choose between cats and dogs, I would definitely opt for cats. The reason is none other because I had an awful experience of being chased after by a stray dog (without no reason I swear!) and a dog’s hyperactivity actually frightens me as they loved getting pats and kisses and would go after a person to get it (this if from my personal experience handling my friend’s dogs). While cats are calmer in nature and subjectively more adorable than dogs

  24. I love animals. It doesn't matter whether it is a cat or a dog. Cats are very cute, but dogs are more loyal. I have a cat in my house. He is very cute and adorable. I agree that cats are better than dogs from an evolutionary perspective. Cats are way more manipulative than dogs and sometimes smarter. I mean there are a lot of stranded cats rather than stranded dogs. Cat survival skills is very good, they could eat anything and live in every places in order to survive. For example, I ever forgot to feed my cat and when I come home, I found out that he is eating a grass on my garden. It was very heartbreaking to see my cats have to eat grass because of my sloppiness. I also love dogs because they are very loyal to their owner and also very playful at the same time, oh, and don't forget that dogs are very big and fluffy. Actually, both cats and dogs are smart animals. Which one is our favorite depends on our preference.

  25. Personally, I wouldn’t call myself as a cat person or a dog person because I’m not a big fan of either one of them. However, if I really have to choose between the two of them as a pet, I would choose dogs. Dogs are more playful than cats and they are known as a very loyal pet. Also, they take a lot of parts in the human life, for example a police dog. When you have a dog at your home, they can guard your house and you would feel safe. But if we see it from the evolutionary aspect, it is proven that cats are better. I think that both cats and dogs have their own strength and weakness. We can’t really choose which one is better without seeing them from different aspects. Because both cats and dogs have their own advantages in every aspect. But we can always choose which one we love better as our pet to accompany us.

  26. Looking at these two creatures always makes me smile. Until I find out that I can’t really choose exactly which one of them is the best. Because I think that both of them are having a different ability, passion, and interest; meaning that they have their own way in order to entertain people. For example, maybe in terms of noise, clean, pampered, cats are tend to do more compare to dogs. Meanwhile, if we’re talking about the one who’s more brave, obey, listen, dogs are better compare to cats. So I kind a disagree if we start to comparing them and saying which one is best; cause every creature that has been made by God always has it’s own purpose and value for other creature. On the other hand, talking about the extinction of dogs, how does cats can even reduce the number of dogs? What have they done? I honestly still curious about this.

  27. If i had to choose between cats or dogs i would probably choose cat. Its actually very debatable to choose between those two. As an animal lover (well queit of) i used to have four cats that lasts for two or three years until my mother decided to put them in my grandmother’s house due to the fur that’s scattered around the living room or scratchy marks on the leather sofa. It was miserable have to be seperated with my cats since i enjoy their pressence and to annoy them when they’re asleep. But cats aren’t like dogs, you cant force them to do anything, they only came up to you when they need you to feed them, and everything they do is because they wanted to. Numereous study said that having a pet could actually reduce stress , thats why maybe one day i would like to have another cat when i live alone.

  28. If you ask me which one is better than this two, well the answer is relative. I don’t have a pet at home, so I can’t give a personal perspective. But I can say that both cats and dogs has their own uniqueness. If I really have to choose between those two, I would prefer to pick a dog. Dogs are good looking with their certain level of strictness. Hence, a dog can also protect your house, and that is also the reason that dogs are used in the police force. Dogs are also well known for their loyalty. Thus, a dog can reduce someone’s loneliness because they can be like a friend to you. Even though I prefer dogs, it doesn’t mean that I don’t like cats. Well, at first, I considered cats as waste animals because they like to search food in trash cans. But now I realize that many cats are good looking and that cats are independent animals. In conclusion, this is a subjective question where everyone has their own reason and reasoning.

  29. Cat or dog? Well im not picking on of them. It may sounds weird but i got some reason for not liking cat or dog. First of all im an allergic person, and i can’t handle the fur of the cats. The fur easily triggered my allergies, when it comes my body become insanely hot, and i feel like my blood boilin inside, coughing and sweating as well and the worst part my face becoming swollen like i was beaten by professional boxer thats the reason why i don't like cats, but i still love to see cats even from far because somehow cats is cute especially kitten. Dogs? Actually i really want to raise dog in my house but my religion forbid me to get along with dogs, I heard Allah's Apostle(P.B.U.H) saying; "Angels (of Mercy) do not enter a house wherein there is a dog or a picture of a living creature (a human being or an animal)." [Hadith - Bukhari 3:515]. Even i love to seeing them in the picture and video i still can’t get closer to them.

  30. If having to choose between cats or dogs, I wouldn't choose any of them. In fact I'm not interested in having pets any day, never have and never will. I don't hate them, I just don't like the idea of having to raise them. It's very inconvenience. Buying their foods, toys, and their special needs like going to the doctors for check ups, grooming to the salon. Those stuff don't cost a small amount of money, even I never spent that much of money to take care of myself. Aside from that, I've heard a story from one of my neighbors back home that used to have lots of cats at home, and after she got married she had a hard time trying to get pregnant. Apparently their feces could cause disability to the baby in their womb. Whereas dogs, aside from my little sisters that are terrified of dogs we can't really have them in our home since dogs were forbidden to have as a pet in Islam. With that being said, I don't think I would ever have a pet in my whole life, not even a fish or a turtle.

  31. Personally, I like cat better than dog because I have bad experience with dog. So when I was kid, me and my family went to Bali for holiday. It was a beautiful morning in the beach, I was playing sands when a dog ran toward me at a really high speed. My family then panic and abandoned me for their own safety. It was too late for me to react so I just close my eye and pray to God. Then, suddenly there was collision and I fell down with the dog on top of me. After that, this dog started to lick my face and I had my face covered with this dog’s saliva. I think this dog does not really want to attack me, he just want to play with me. But, it still traumatize me until now. Whenever I see dog or hear dog’s barking, I will run away immediately.

  32. I am not a cat person or a dog person. Since I was a little, my parent won’t let me and my brother adopted any pet because my mother cannot tolerate the presence of fur around the house. As a result, I was never had a chance to play with any pets. However, if I have to choose between the two, I prefer dogs rather than cats. Dogs are well known by their loyalty towards the owner as they can sense the affection given by the owner. For some people, spending time with their dogs can release stress and create a feeling of joy. My grandmother has a golden retriever at her house and since I am very close to my grandmother, I need to spend some time with the dog. At first, I was so scared because it is probably my first interaction with a dog but eventually I can manage to play with the dog and at the end I become really close with it.

  33. I like cats more since they’re calmer than dogs. I like cat’s companies even though I don’t have any pets including cats, because my mom forbids me to have pets; she said that it will just be troublesome at my house since it needs a lot of responsibilities. In addition, my sister and dad are allergic to furs. Therefore, when I was a kid, I used to play at my cousin’s house who have cats as their pets. Her house is near mine, so I often visited her house, usually on weekends. However, I can’t immediately play with cats. I get to be scared at first and not wanting to be near them, but after a little time, I will get over it. While I’m always scared of dogs. I agree that dogs are cute, I watch cute dog videos, but they just frighten me in real life. Therefore, I prefer cats more if I was allowed to have pets.

  34. I have never had a mammal for a pet, all I have is a turtle and a couple of fish; and the fish died within a couple of weeks because I forgot to but a water filter. So I guess it’s fair to say that I have a bed reputation regarding owning pets, added by the fact my mom was never into pets, she’s scared that if we own one, they would ruin our furniture and our home in general. There was a time where I question her decision, but in time I understand that we do have a lot fragile things in house, and our yard is hardly big enough to support a dog nor cat.
I know down I am a dog person. One of the first movies that made me cried is Hachiko; and at the time, I’ve seen Forrest Gump! If that’s not proof, I don’t know what is. Therefore, I made a promise to myself that when I’ll by myself a house with a huge yard when I get older, so I can realize my dream.

  35. I definitely would go for dogs. They are super loyal. Dogs have the capability to understand the human’s feelings, so they would make a great company when you’re sad and having no one to talk to. I used to have a lot of dogs for all of my family love them, but because some reason, my parents stop letting me and my sisters to keep a dog. From all of the dogs I’ve taken care of before, my favourites are : a St. Bernard called Catherine (If you ever watched a movie called “Beethoven” produced in 1992, that’s what my catherine looks like) and a Golden Retriever called Chong (She was born in Korea). Although Cath has already passed away because of food poisoning, and Chong is stolen (or should I say dog-napped), they will always have this special place in my heart.

  36. The first thing I noticed about this article, is that the first three paragraphs are repeated. Other than that, this article is very interesting. It’s already widely known in the scientific community that cats are very adaptable creatures. There are many species of cats that live in desserts, cold snowy areas, and jungles which have evolved different adaptations for them to survive in their respected habitats. For example, the Margay (Leopardus wiedii) has evolved to have the largest eyes to head ratio of any cat, to hunt in the dark forests of Costa Rica at night. Another example is the Fishing Cat (Prionailurus viverrinus) which has adapted to living in a variety of wetland habitats, and mainly feeds on freshwater fish. This cat is found on a number of countries in South-East Asia, including parts of Indonesia, and breaks the common stereotype of cats being afraid of water. The tiger has also been known to frequent wetland areas, and hunt near, or sometimes in, water. Cats have adapted to live in basically any environment in the world, even in urban areas. So from an evolutionary standpoint, it’s safe to say that cats are better than dogs. But personally when it comes to pets, I would prefer a cat rather than a dog because my father is a strict Muslim, and he doesn’t want anything to do with a dog in the house. I think dogs make great pets. They are very useful in term of working animals, and have been used for centuries for hunting, tracking, guarding personnel or property, and even transport. These attributes have made dogs a popular choice when it comes to pets. Even working dogs that have retired live as normal pets in loving homes. So in conclusion, I think cats are better than dogs from an evolutionary point of view, but as pets they are equal.

  37. I have had this weird yet unique thought for a long time now, this theory of whether a person is considered to be a cat person or a dog person. I think that this favour of the two animals is heavily incorporated and influenced of their environment. Environment in the means of where they live, the street animals that surround them, their wealthiness, and even their spirituality. For instance, here in the island of Java mainly in Jakarta, where there are an abundance of stray cats roaming around the streets and because of that people tend to favour cats over dogs. Another reason would be their religious background, Islam forbids their people from touching dog's saliva, which also adds up to the reason why Javanese tend to prefer cats over dogs. On the other hand, let's look at Bali and Papua for instance. When compared to the island of Java, majority of the people in those two specific islands, they have much less Muslim population. And as you can see, if you've ever been to Bali or Papua, there are much more dogs roaming around and the people themselves prefers to favour dogs over cats.

  38. When it comes to choosing between owning Cats or Dogs, I prefer more owning a Dog rather than a Cat. This is not because I’m not a cat person, I believe dogs are more beneficial compared to cats. A short history of my life, since I was 6 years old, my father already introduced me to any kind of pets starting from Fish, Birds, Cats, until Dogs. From my first pet, it already taught me a lot. It doesn’t only teach me to be a loving and a caring person, having a pet also taught me to grow with a patient but always stays passionate at the same time, towards everything I do. Therefore, based on my experience I prefer choosing a dog because a dog has more sense of friendship, they can comfort you whenever you are feeling down and also they can boost your mood when you are happy through their energetic movement.

  39. Me personally I am more t a dog person actually, because once I had 4 dogs and I decided to give them to my cousins, because the constraint of my religion as in my religion there are boundaries in having a dog with you, so I turned into a cat person. I prefer dogs rather than cats because I feel dogs are more helping in terms of companionship. Yet cats are adorable and good for relief my stress from the human undertaking relations in the real life. To some extent some cats can be as interactive as dogs can be through some advance training and also a strong bond between the cats and the owner so the cat can be more interactive as dog towards their owner, but I preferred to call the owners of cats or dogs as human friends because , me personally have a strong connection with my pets and they became more than just a pet. They are my best friends.

  40. Cats and dogs have been rivals for ages. Whenever I see cats and dogs near each other, I just expect them to fight and dogs will usually win. I do not know what made them hate each other but It is weird how they always quarrel. I have never ownerd a dog nor a cat but to be honest I would have chosen cats. Cats look way cuter and smaller. Even though I am a big guy, I am not going to bother carrying dogs everywhere. There might be small dogs in this world, but I also take their noise into consideration. Cats tend to have cuter voice compared to dogs. Does not matter how small a dog is, they bark so loudly. The great thing about dogs is that they are smart. They can trace stuffs and are usually used as an animal to perform in a circus. Polices also use dogs to find some burglar because dogs can detect scent very sharply

  41. I am not an animal lover. However, if someone asked me which one I prefer between cats and dogs, I would say I prefer dogs. When I went to Gold Coast, Australia, I stayed with my host family and they had dog and cat named Timmy and Ginger. I played with Timmy – the dog – more often than with Ginger. Because as soon as I am home from school or outside activities, Timmy always seem very excited to see me then he run to me. My favorite part was strolling around the neighborhood with Timmy after school. I had fun with Timmy during my stay but not with Ginger. I tried to play with Ginger either but she always rejected me and seemed not as excited as Timmy wanted to play with me. To me, dogs seem friendlier than cats. It can be proven from the first video; the dog helps the old man to cross the road and also, they are better listener.

  42. Both cat and dog are two animals that probably be the most popular pet of all time. This is truly reasonable, because as we know, besides from their cuteness, both of these pets are also very loyal and can be considered as the easiest animal to trained. I personally not a pet guy, because i used to have a cat and rabbit when i was a little, but i could not find any satisfaction or happiness by owning these pets. If we talk about dog and cat, to be honest i don’t really know which one is better than the other, because i don’t have enough experience on them. But if i have to choose, i think i have to go with dog. Why? because i tend to see cat as a weak and lazy animal that likes to lay around and do nothing. While for dog, i feel like they’are a bit more ergetic and seems to be more fun to play with

  43. To be honest, I don't really interact with cats that much because my family never owned any, even my sisters are afraid of cats but I have no clue why. I had one bad experience in playing with cats. One time I went to my friend's house who has 5 cats. I tried to play with one of them by touching the cat carefully, but unfortunately it bit me and I also got scratched from cat's sharp claws. I was very confused as to why the cat injured me while I did nothing. It turns out that the results of the study reveal that cats might prefer to interact with their owner. Maybe that's the reason why I got scratches. In my opinion, cats are much more independent than dogs. Hence having cats as pets are very suitable for busy people. I'm okay with cats though, but as pets, I prefer dogs because dogs are loyal, friendly, protective, and more fun to play with

  44. I’ve never had a pet in my entire life, so I don’t really know what its like to have a cat or dog as a pet. I don’t really have much to comment on this post, but from the cute video of the article, I think that cats are really cute. I don’t understand why people think cats are bad and evil. Just because cats don’t like playing outside and are as loud as dogs does not mean they are bad. I used to play and feed the stray cats near my house and they were always nice to me. There are a lot of cat videos on the internet and on Instagram that shows cats are as nice and cute as dogs. I also think dogs are cute too, I watch videos of dogs on Instagram sometimes, but I think cats are just better. They’re cleaner and lazy and easier to take care of.

  45. This is a tough one. Personally, I have always been a cat person however I cannot deny the fact that dogs are far more clever as a pet, the level of obedience in which a dog has to a human is astonishing. Cats are more peculiar if I must say so, in a way that, their behaviour are very unpredictable, they can be cute all of a sudden. Dogs on the other side, are very straightforward with the emotions, they understand more about us than cats, dogs can even tell when they feel like their owners are sad. I love both animals because they are such a joy to be around with, sadly as a Muslim it is forbidden to have a pet dog, however you are allowed to have a pet dog if you are living in a forrest or when you have a farm. But I can still pet dogs from time to time, I think dogs are such magnificent creatures.
