Tell us your sibling rivalry stories

69 comments:

  1. I have lived my life accompanied by my three siblings. An older brother, an older sister, and a younger sister. I believe because the closest age gap I have is the one I have with my older sister, we have many sibling rivalry moments. One time, when I was an elementary student, I was enjoying my free time with watching some cartoons then out of nowhere she jumped on me with a blanket. We struggled inside it and then I felt something was off in my mouth. I stopped and run my tounge to quick scanned my mouth. I lost a tooth due the fight and fortunately, there wasn't any blood coming out of my gum. At the end, we found the tooth on the floor, and we told my parents about it. My brother who heard it to checked my tooth and gum then laughed out loud, so did my parents. There are so many stories, but that's one of my favorite story so far beside the story where I bit my sister's nose and scratched a tiny piece of her skin off with my fingernail.

  2. I am the middle child in the family, I have an older brother and a younger sister. For rivalry, I would say I have fought a lot with my sister, I would say we fight almost every time that we are together. I don’t know why but I have this urge to piss her off, sometimes over the dumbest thing like who gets the TV remote first gets to watch the TV for hours, but every time she gets the remote I just steal it from her and change the channel. One of the most memorable thing that happened was when we fought over an iPad, it’s so pathetic now but I don’t know why it was such a big deal back then, we fought over who gets to play the iPad; until one day my parents had enough so they decided to buy me a laptop which is better than an iPad so I guess all that hard work of fighting with my sister I got what I “supposedly” deserved.

  3. I have 2 siblings, and I am a middle child in the family. I have an older sister who is 4 years older than me. Whereas, I have a younger brother who is 2 years younger than me. Because my sister and I rarely met because of a fairly distant age difference, we rarely communicate, and naturally rarely fight. Unlike the case with my younger brother, because we are always together, meeting every day, doing everything together, we fight very often. This fight always arises when we have different opinion. Small things like music tastes can make us fight. Our quarrel is quite simple. We usually fight with our mouths in a few minutes, then we are both silent. After that we get back together again, because actually we are very close to each other. But getting older, we rarely fight, moreover, now my brother has lived in another country.

  4. In my little family, I am the oldest sister who has 2 younger brothers, well for the youngest one, he doesn't give me much trouble since we are 4 years apart but for the other one we had so many rivalry moments from every little thing to the bigger occasions, we fight over the tv remote, we argue about lifestyle, we often told to our parents about each other's mistakes. I think we have our own specialties which makes it worse, if I'm good at something then he must be bad at it and vice versa, But there's a moment when he helped me. When he opened the door at night when I was coming late from a party, He did it smoothly so our parents didn't aware about it and I wasnt getting scolded at that time. well I hope someday all this drama could stop and we will work together as a family and make our parents proud of us.

  5. I don’t have a brother or sister but I do have lots of cousins and I do visit them regularly or we usually met when our big family do have lunch or dinner or when one of us’s having a birthday. Our rivalry is just basic tho, to get the most food compared with each other and many small fights tho. However, our most intense rivalry is when it comes to games, when our family’s having an event at one of my uncle/aunt’s house, we frequently play games like FIFA, NBA 2K etc. our rivalry were not stopped there, when we lost, we tend to fight in the terms of debating and we do have physical punishments everytime one of us lost. However, despite the rivalries we do still laugh at each other, love and respect each other, despite the fact that we do fight with each other, mock each other and even sometimes make our uncles/aunts mad at us, we still happy with it and in my opinion, that’s what makes my big family unique.

  6. I am the middle child of the family. I have an older sister who is actually my senior in FEB and a younger brother who is still in high school. All of us are two years apart so we feel that we’re very close with each other. I feel like the siblings rivalry is felt stronger between my sister and I since we’re both girls and we always go to the same school since elementary. When my sister joined a competition, I usually ended up joining as well. But the positive thing about it is that it keeps me driven and motivated. For example, my older sister frequently joins economics and business competitions. Since I do look up to her, she inspires me to join competitions and accept new challenges. On the other hand, since my brother is the only male amongst us, I don’t really feel the rivalry between us. I feel like he’s more driven into sports and music. Although we do compete on certain things, I do feel really grateful because the always give the maximum support for each other.

    1. Now I understand where you got that motivation from, Hanna. I never knew how much impact your older sister had on you until I read your comment: “Since I do look up to her, she inspires me to join competitions and accept new challenges.” I have always thought you were the opposite of your older sister: ignorant (if not all, then on a few things), more carefree, and not really academic oriented. But then, that’s why there was a saying, “Do not judge a book by its cover” I think that quote is suitable for someone like me who likes to jump into conclusions as soon as I see and meet the subject for a brief moment (if its subject is a human being, then let’s say it’s several days). I wonder, have you ever competed with your own sister in a competition? Because I think that’s when things will start to feel, if not all, fluctuated.

  7. I had two sisters and no brother. Both of my sisters are only have two years gap which is why it makes them so close. Unlike me, I had nine years gap with my oldest sister and seven years gap with the younger one. And that is why I think the rivalry came from; because since we have a huge gap of age, we have a different state of emotion that makes us sometimes easy to get fight.

Interestingly, I get into fight more often with my younger sister. I think is because she taught that I stole my parents affection away from her. Anyway, here comes the story. One day, I asked my younger sister to borrow her cellphone because in that time I still haven’t got one yet. So I asked politely to play a game. But she rejected me in a rude way; she pulls her phone away from me and talking with high notes showing that she really hates me when I’m holding her phone. I don’t even know what makes her did that. Then I got into silence and calmed myself down. On the next day, I got so mad that I decided to do a revenge. When my sister was taking a shower, I took her cellphone and all I did was texting her best friend. I don’t know why her best friend but yea I just did. In the text I said that I really hate her and I don’t want to be friends with her anymore. Then I sent it. In the same day, I still saved and I acted as if nothing happened. But then comes the next day, after my sister came from her school, she was yelling at home very loud and looking for me; as if she wants to kill me right away. Then she was very mad and about to hit me on the face, luckily my mom stopped her. She was cried as well cause her best friend no longer wants to be friend with her and hate her so much. Then I start to felt guilty cause all I did was too overwhelmed and way over the limit. It took her months to forgive me. But from that moment I realized that revenge has nothing good for us. I know what I did is very cruel, but its me when I’m just kids. Luckily, as the day we’re getting older, three of us are getting so close together and become very rare to get to into a fight; which is a good thing.

    1. Upon reading this article, I feel like you are more than what meets the eye, Nurul. I always thought that you must be a very obedient person as a kid, but as you grow older you’re becoming more idealistic person as a woman. But look how my deductions have failed me. This story of you and your siblings is very interesting. You took revenge on your sister by texting her best friend saying you hated her and didn’t want to befriend with her anymore? You have got guts there, my friend. I salute you. I don’t know how you dealt with your sister’s hatred toward you for several months, but I guess it suck (well, duh). I’m more interested in the next day you sent the text to her best friend. What happened to them exactly? Did her best friend really take the words in the heart? Tell us! I’m curious!

  8. Growing up, me and my older brother aren’t so fond of each other, we often fought for little things that shouldn’t be fought against, like who’s going to play the Playstation or who’s going to take shower first. As I grew older, I kind of miss that moment when our mom has to tell my brother to not punch me since I could annoy him very much and turn off or pull the plug for the Playstation while he’s playing with it. This sibling rivalry started when I was still in the womb of my mom. At that time, my brother was the only child in the family for 3 years and he was loved and cared by a lot of people In my family. He was afraid that my presence will divert all of those love that he used to got to me, and that’s why my brother was once asked by my mother whether he is happy to have a sibling or not and he answered “not”. Luckily, our sibling rivalry didn’t last that long and we finally went along, I felt funny and stupid looking back at those moments when we used to fight as kids.

  9. I have an older brother, he is three years older than me, and we’ve pretty much spent most of our time together arguing and fighting. I think that, the three-year difference causes this effect that my brother feels he is still can relate to my live, but feels a lot older than he is, because we’re almost never in the same level in school (He’s in Middle School while I’m in Elementary, He’s in High School while I’m in Middle School and so on and so forth.) This cause a superiority complex (which is sometimes justified) that cause him to feel like he deserves more things than me. We would argue about our allowance (even though inflation would obviously cause me to earn more than what he did) who gets to watch the TV, who gets to use the internet when we still didn’t have Wi-Fi, and plenty other things.

Of course, as we grew older, we tend to reduce the unnecessary fights and quarrels and have more respect towards each other. In fact, He is one of the main reason I got into UGM, the university I go to now, because he had so much improvements here. I treasure the little fights we had because it cause us to be the way that we are today.

  10. My family is consisting of five children’s. I mostly play with my second brother, we are also really close, and have a lot of similarities, it is because our age is are only 3 years gap. Both of us love playing games and sometimes we don’t realize if we have play for more than 5 hours. Our favorite and most addicting game is FIFA and NBA. But, sometimes, when one of us looses the game, we don’t accept it and sometimes throw the consoles and ask to rematch the game. Luckily, we have change our bad habit as we grow old and try not to be offended when loosing the game. It becomes a memory for both of us when we grow old, like now, when I go home to Semarang, I always spend my time to play games with him. On the other hand, my parents sometimes wonder why do never fight about games again.

  11. I have two siblings, and both of them are girls. Actually, as we grown up, the sublings rivalry in my family is going less and less. But, when i was like ten years old, me and mybsisters always had a fight concerning the rivalry to get or to decide who is the most loved by my parents. Once upon a time, my mother gave me a present because i got a good grades in the final exam. We actually know what happened next. Yeah and kne of my sister is very envy at me an she is angry to my mother like "Why do you give me a present for no reason.". After being explained by my mother the reason why she gave me a present, she still didn't want to admit that she was wrong. Well that often happened in my family when i was little. The most ineresting story is when i got a birthday presents from my class that contain a bag, shoes, and a pen. Because i got so many presents from my class, then my sister said that i asked my friends to give me these things at my birthday. I think that's a normal thing to be jealous, because we were still children back then, and jealousy between siblings is a normal thing. That's an example of my siblings rivalry between me and my sisters in my family.

  12. I am a middle children with an older brother, an older sister, and a little sister. Since me and my older brother and little sister all only have one year old gap, I do feel sibling rivalry quite often. I felt the sibling rivalry the most when we were still kids. We (me, my brother, and little sister) are very close to each other and do everything together back then. We do everything together that makes us compete with each other too sometimes. I remember, back then we joined the same courses, which were sempoa, and drawing courses. From that courses, we also joined the competitions too. We joined competitions a lot and luckily we won those competitions quite often. But the problem is that we will be mad or cried if the winner is not us, although the winner is our own sibling. But we got through those times, and now we are very supportive to each other. I got lucky to have my siblings that I am very close with and could have them as best friends, siblings, support systems, and also motivators.

    1. So, Chintya, are you the third child in the family? Does the age gap between you and your oldest sister large? I really find it cute to know that you and your siblings even compete with each other in real competitions. So I guess your competitive side has been built since you were a kid. Anyway, do you play sport, Chintya? I’m sorry if I’ve asked this question in real life because I have a bad memory. I think it’s going to be very interesting to see you playing basketball with your younger sister in the same team. It’s like seeing Manganang siblings in Asean Games 2018. By the way, do you know who Manganang siblings are? They are women’s national volleyball players. Both of them played as team mates, representing Indonesia’s team, in Asean Games 2018. If this kind of thing happens, I’ll make sure to support you guys with the biggest banner I could find and I’ll scream the loudest until my throat sores.

  13. Back when I was still in grade school I used to fight with my brother a lot, he was 6 years older than me so he was pretty big back then. We used to fight because both of us would never back down from each other and because I was a very stubborn boy. One evening I had a real bad fight with him ,although I've forgotten the reason why it happened, it was pretty bad. In our fight he almost choked me out and slammed me on the floor after I cussed him out, of course me being a six year old, I screamed and ran to my mom's room to tell on him. After she heard the story, my brother locked himself in his room and refused to come out unless it was for meals, after that incident my mom told us to make up and apologize to each other and so we did. Although we still did have fights after that one time, I can wholeheartedly say that the fight was the worse that had happened.

  14. Siblings rivalry is a common thing to happen in a household. I have a twin brother, a little sister and little brother. Even though we certainly love each other, siblings rivalry used to occurred big time between me and my siblings. Most often, the rivalry was between me and my twin brother. In my elementary years, I used to fight with him over stuff that aren't supposed to be a big thing. We could fist fight until one of us in deep pain. We used to fight both physically and verbally. In other hand, me and my little brother used to fight also. I guess siblings rivalry also produced by envious feelings and also feelings of unfairness. As maturity came by, now I have realised that all action I conducted to my brothers aren't right. Even though sometimes we still fight now, it won't be more than verbal fight and we would be in peace with each other not long afterwards. Above all, I am a lucky brother to have siblings that are always be there for me, to support me and miss me when I'm not around. I promise myself that I will always love them unconditionally and certainly do anything to protect them.

    1. Wow, that’s very lovely of you to say “we certainly love each other” and “I promise myself that I will always love them unconditionally and certainly do anything to protect them” about your siblings. Not that it’s not normal, but I think it’s very unlikely to say that if you are a boy—especially to your male sibling who’s accidentally your twin as well. I think boys (or men) have more—I don’t know. Pride? Dignity? You name it.—to say cliché things, let alone to say “love”. Maybe it is just me with my own perspective as an indigenous person. I don’t know about this kind of thing in the foreign countries, so it kind of surprises me. I think you are so open and are not ashamed to speak your thoughts, and I think that’s a good thing. Call me inquisitive, but do you mind telling us about your little fight with your twin brother that includes one of you guys in deep pain? Of course, if you mind, you can ignore this question. Hihihihi

  15. I have one older sister who’s ten years older than me. When I was younger, I would say that it’s hard to live with her because we have different interests. She was already in grade four of elementary school when I was born and I was only eight years old when she went to university. She was already so mature, while I was still watch Spongebob in the morning. So, it was clearly hard for us to have common interest. However, as I grew older and went through the things she has already went through, she would share her experiences and taught me to learn from her mistakes and to not do the same thing. I would say, rather than a physical rivalry like fighting over things, it would be more on the aspect of academic. I grew up seeing her being on top of her class, passed all of her exams with flying colors, graduated from prestigious school and university. I feel like I would let my parents down if I didn’t do well on my study. Overall, I think it was a good rivalry because it motivates me to always do my best academically.

  16. I am the middle child of the family; I have an older sister and a younger brother. When it was just me and my sister, we fight a lot, nearly everyday throughout our childhood, because we have different lifestyles and preferences. The most memorable one is we always argue about what restaurants to eat at during weekends. Therefore, my mom made us a deal that we get to pick the restaurant alternately. Our conflict was actually not a big deal but we made it big since we were just a little kid. On the other side, my brother regularly fights with me, but not with my sister. There is a high age gap between my brother and me, moreover to my sister. When my brother was born, my sister was not a kid anymore. Therefore, she always give way to my brother, but as annoying as it sounds, I don’t do that lol. We always annoy each other, which leads to fights. There will always be rivalries between us, and I believe that it’s actually a normal thing between siblings.

  17. I have one brother who is two years older than me, his name is Dito. We are very close and we always tell each other stories. He is an introvert person but he always shares his feelings and stories to me. In addition, he is very protective towards me and he always concerned towards my actions. One day, he has a girlfriend and he became really attached to her. All the attention that used to be directed towards me now, it was all given to her. I have never confronted him about my feelings but I reflected it through my actions and attitude. He realized that I was annoyed by his actions. He apologized and started to introduce his girlfriend to the family. Turns out his girlfriend was very nice and friendly. I spent some time with her to get to know her better because deep down I am also very protective towards my brother but I tend to hesitate to show it.

  18. rivalry between sibling is a normal thing I would say, everyone who have a sister or brother know what it is and have experience at some point in their life and it can about anything important subject to stupid and irrelevant matters, but somehow seem super important at that time. We used to argue a lot with my older sister when we were kids for a lot of stupid things, for example TV program was a big source of argument, we never wanted to watch the same things at the same time, I remember as a kid in there was only 2 or 3 Tv channel who played kids programs and cartoon in the morning and of course we never agree on the same programs to watch, I don’t know if it was because we really wanted to watch something different or to annoy each other the most we can, but we would always hide the remote or play games to decide who would “rules over the remote” in the morning.

  19. So, my sibling rivalry stories. I do have a sibling, just one sister. But the stories came from long ago when I was still a child and she was a foster. When she came to the family, she was a prioritized child by my parents, and because she was also a girl, everything that she wanted are granted. She even got an iPad in the age of seventh. We always got into a fight of everything, including getting to use the same toy over and over again. But she would always win because girls first. And when both of us got yelled at by our father, I would get the most blame, but both of us have the same level of guilty in my perspective. In just don’t like how our younger siblings would get most of the attention in being we are also a child of our parents. It’s not that I hate it, I just don’t like of how they treated their own child in different ways and levels.

  20. My parents have only two children. I am the first one, and my 16-years-old sister is the second one (obviously she’s the last one). Our sibling rivalry happened when we were in elementary school. I would say that the rapport between my sister and I is quite unique and I would blame the different characteristics we have. I tend to be more active and talkative just like my mother, while my sister is more quiet and indifferent to her surroundings. I am happy to have a sister because I saw my friends who have siblings too seemed to have a good relationship with them. My way of showing that I care is by talking to my sister and sometimes give her a kiss. On the other hand, my sister who I previously mentioned as being indifferent, does not like that. When I knew that she doesn’t like it, I was tempted to annoy her with that. She got upset and finally we got into a fight. But luckily, since now we are much older than before, we had rebuild our relationship. And now, we miss each other so much.

  21. I have two siblings, and i’m the youngest child within my family. I have 2 years age gap with my sister, and 4 years age gap with my brother. Back in the day, my sister is can be considered as the trouble maker of the family. She is very selfish, sensitive, easy to get mad, and likes to cause trouble with everyone, especially with me. She is literally the most annoying person i’ve ever knew at that time. At first, i wasn’t really bothered by her action, but then it started to get so frequent until it reached a point where i started to act physical towards her. Whenever i did this, she always cried and snitched it to my mom, and as always, i’m the one who kept on getting the blame. Whenever a conflict between me and my sister occurred, my older brother will usually became the mediator who settled the peace between the two of us, although i think its not very useful either.

  22. As a younger brother, I do not really get jealous of my one and only sister. Even if I do, it was never at the point where I really want to beat her at the things that she is good at. When I was a kid, my parents were on my side most of the time. Whenever I fought or quarrel with my sister, my parents always scold my sister instead of me. I do get scolded sometimes but they were telling me in a softer way. The weird thing about me is that when I fought with my sister, I was always the first one to apologize. I always felt that I am the wrong one. I did not do this because my parents told me to but because of my own initiative. After apologizing, I always feel satisfied because it seems that I am the older person between us.

  23. So to start with, my family consist of five, my mom and my dad of course and three child. I have two older sisters so I’m the youngest and one and only son in the family. The sibling rivalry in my family is not really that big thing because my mom and my dad taught me not to be a jealousy person. But I’m only human, as Christina Perri says, sometimes I feel like my parents giving more attention to my sisters and that thing makes me jealous. One of my biggest fight with my sisters is when my dad bought me my first smartphone. It was happened in my fourth grade. The fight is so bad, my dad need to give my sisters new smartphone as well. After that incident happened, my dad always give us one or two words about jealousy. He said that being jealous in some subject is good but its not good if you overly jealous at something that is not really necessary. You need to see your own reflection, don’t be greedy and always be grateful.

  24. Growing up with six siblings is not that funny as people might think. First of all, for our parents is harder to pay attention to each one of us and as kid you end up doing whatever it takes to get the attention from them. For example, we use to fight every night to sleep in our parents’ bed and we ended up sleeping all together in one bed somehow.
In my case is easy to divide my siblings into three groups: my older brother and sister as the “leaders”, my two brothers and me as the “middle ones”, and my two little sisters as the “babies”. The worst rivalry where always within the groups, for example, once my brother, who is only two years older than me, push me to the floor and I ended up losing my teeth with only 4 years old. You can imagine that I needed to wait 2 years until my new teeth finally came out. Nevertheless, the oldest one always wanted to dominate the small ones treating us as slaves.

  25. Back then, my older brother and I would get into fights and competitions over the littlest of things. Pokemon cards? We’d have a competition who could collect the rarest of cards. Video games? We kept score of the round of games we played and who won (I always lost when it came to racing games, making the scoreboard filled with marks on my brother’s side). We even competed in who could last without sleeping longer. But the biggest and longest competition we had was about academics. Although we didn’t keep a scoreboard like we did for the things mentioned above, he and I would always compare our report cards and grades, keep time and see who could finish their problem set better (even though we were doing problem sets based on our school year). I can’t remember why I was so stubborn in proving I was smarter, when he was three years ahead of me and thus obviously smarter.

Oddly enough, it’s our sibling rivalry that brought us closer. Because of those silly competitions, we shared a lot of interests and laughed as much as we fought. Whenever one of us had found something new they liked, the other would follow. We don’t do any of those petty competitions now, but we still share any new hobbies we find with the other.

  26. I have an older sister who I rarely share a rivalry with. We have a large nine year gap between us, and that is what I think played a part in our sibling rivalry, or lack thereof. When we were younger, it would not be surprising for our parents to find us squabbling over something like who gets to watch the TV, or who gets the last piece of food, or the case of “I’m not doing it wrong, you are”. But as we grew older, our rivalry diminished. We began working in the same side against our parents, because we always find ourselves demanding the same thing from them. But there is one time we found ourselves at a rivalry of sorts.
Last year, my sister and I took an IELTS test to get a certificate. My sister studied hard for days, if not weeks. She tried her best to make the most of her studies; I, on the other hand, did not. When the test came, we both tried our best. After the written tests were done, we were told to wait for the speaking session. Since the speaking session was hours away, we decided to go out for lunch with our mom. When we returned for the speaking session, which had to be done individually, I discovered that I left my identification in the car; since they couldn’t wait for me, my sister went in first instead. After my test was over, my sister asked me about what topic I was made to talk about. It came to my surprise that, if weren’t for me to forget my ID, I would have been stuck on the difficult topic of sculptures that my sister was made to do, rather than the much more easier topic of internet websites that I was made to do. A few weeks after the test, the results came in. Since each of us had to enter the office by ourselves to obtain the document individually, my sister got her's first; needless to say, she was very proud of her results. I got mine much later; but after my mom saw my results, she immediately contacted my sister, who was still out having lunch. When she came home, she told us that she nearly choked on her food when she read the text from our mom that said that my score is 0.5 higher than her's, despite the fact that I didn’t studied at all in preparation.

  27. My family is a family of four which means I only have one sibling. I have an older brother who is 5 years older than me. The age gap isn’t that big of a difference but growing up I wasn’t really close with my brother until I entered Middle School and my brother entered college. When we were younger, we never really talked or play together, we would only fight and argue whenever we were in the same place. I honestly don’t remember our biggest rivalry because all we did growing up was fighting, so it is really hard for me to remember since we had too many fights. Now that we are older, we are a lot closer than before. Nowadays, I would vent to my brother or ask for advices. My brother is honestly, one of the most intelligent person I know. He is incredibly smart and open minded, so having a deep talk with him is really interesting. I never thought I would be this close with my brother considering how different and distant we were growing up. I am honestly really grateful to have a sibling as wonderful as my brother, I can never speak highly enough of him. Although he is sometimes stubborn and annoying, he is one of the reason why I am always homesick because I always miss his silliness and our super unfunny inside jokes.

  28. Fights and quarrels between siblings are a very normal thing to do. This condition occur in many different types of family and also happened to my family. I have 3 siblings with me as the only boy in the family. I have a 23 year old sister and a 10 year old little sister. It is a very big gap of age between us the three siblings. The main problem that happens in my family when it comes to siblings are the discrepancy of things that are given by my parents to each child. I was the only boy in the family so that makes me having the least toys and things rather than two of my siblings. This situation sometimes pisses me of and it build a feeling of jealousy between my siblings. Eventhough me and my siblings often fight over little things, those memories are actually the memories that i missed the most in this present time. The distance of between me, my sister, and my little sister is far with my little sister in Jakarta and my big sister in Melbourne pursuing her Masters Degree.

  29. Actually, I don’t have a reason to write a comment on this blog. This is because I am an only child. Therefore, I have never experienced sibling rivalry like my other friends. Reading others’ stories made me realize that sibling rivalry is a very common thing in a family. I think, those experience can make you closer with your brothers or sisters. As an only child, it is very likely for me to feel lonely at home, especially when both of my parents are working. Even though when my parents are at home, I can still feel lonely. When I was in elementary school, I wanted a little brother. Some say that it’s good, because it can reduce your loneliness, but some disagree because of the rivalry, sharing issues, etc. I personally will be happy if I have a little brother or sister. The risk of sibling rivalry is a common thing that happens in a family. All you have to do is just maintain a healthy relationship in your family.

    1. Aww, Pascal. Trust me, having siblings is only advantageous when you are already old enough to think rationally. When you are a child and having a sibling, especially the one that does not have much of age gaps, it is totally annoying and overwhelming at times. The rivalry and fights are indeed inevitable in a family. But I think those childish moments are something I would like to cherish as it points out the big difference that happens in your current times. This could indicate how much the siblings have grown, and the change in terms of tolerance is a sign of maturity. If 10 points means you were very very lonely, then from scale 1-10, how lonely were you having no siblings at all and being a lonely child? How did you overcome the loneliness that creeped up your system? Did you play with your neighbour? You have to answer this immediately because I don’t like to wait!

  30. Hmm, siblings. I used to fight a lot with my brothers (I have two brothers and I am the youngest and the only daughter in my family). We would fight over anything, like ANYTHING. Sadly, because they are boys, we fought physically and in the end we would cry and neither of us won the battle. But what I realized now is that actually, my brothers never really hit me and I was actually the only one who punched them. When I punched them, to the point where their skins went all red (sometimes blue... I know. I was cruel.) they would only hit me with a pillow or a boolster and never really hurt me. I became a strong independent girl now thanks to my brothers who teached me how to survive when you're fighting with other boys. But now that my oldest brother is working and my second brother is studying in another country, I felt sad sometimes that I can't really meet them or fight with them. I miss them so much. A week before I moved to Yogyakarta, we actually went to Singapore to have a short escape with only us three without our parents. It was an unforgettable memories.

  31. I have a younger sister, she is three years younger than me, and we are very different. We always had a lot of small fights for everything: who is going to have the remote control and chose the tv program, who has more food than the other, who our parents prefer… Our favorite thing was to annoy each other and make it look like it was the other’s fault. For example, my sister used to lock us in the bathroom and shout as loud as she could so that our parents would think that I was annoying her while I didn’t do anything. However, since I started living alone about 2 years ago, we get on very well and became a team to support each other in front of our parents. For example, we call each other whenever we have a “sisters’ secret” which annoys a lot our mother because she also wants to share the secret, but we never want to tell her.

  32. I never had a sibling rivalry with my siblings. I came from a family of five; a father, a mother, an older sister, me, and a younger brother. I do think it is the consequence of having a psychologist mother; my parents accept their children for who they are, and there is no pressure to achieve more than others. We are thought to fulfil personal dreams instead of contesting with each other as it is unimportant.

The only “accidental” contest within, is to get into the most prestigious university as possible and it is being “contested” within the more prominent family; it includes my cousins, uncles and aunts. In my main family, both of my parents and my sister got into prestigious universities; my father went to the faculty of economics of the University of Indonesia, my mother went to study psychology in the same university, while my sister went to visual communication design at Institut Teknologi Bandung. On the bigger family, there are graduates of Nanyang Techonological University, University of Melbourne, and Monash University to name a few.

  33. Siblings: the people you hate yet love the most. I have three siblings; two older brothers and a little sister. Amongst them all, I am closest to my brother who is only one and a half years older than me. By close I mean we fight a lot. When we were younger, we were always together; we were like twins (although we do not look alike). I always wanted the same thing that he has whether it is a toy gun, a football, or even a fireman costume. If I did not get the same thing as him because my mother said it is “for boys” I would get angry and steal it from him. He then would snitch to our mother and that makes me even angrier and thus it often leads to a fight. Now that we are older, I grew to become more girly and I am not jealous of him anymore.

  34. I have a brother that is 3 years older than me. His name is Rizky and he is the first child of my family. I am the second Child and I have 2 younger sisters. But my story focuses on my brother and I. My brother was always the pride of my family, he won almost all competitions he competed in, he got best scores in his class every year and he got accepted at the best university in Indonesia, which is UI (according to Mr Adrian). Now, how could I top him? I almost never got top scores in school, I didn't win a lot of my competitions, and I got into the third best university in Indonesia which is UGM (according to Mr Adrian). All my life I was in his shadow; he was never mean to me. He didn't mind that I join to play with his friends when they go out to play (which is extremely rare from what I heard from other people). He also invited me to play xbox with him a lot also watch tv together and never fight about the channel. We were good siblings, but I always felt intimidated by him. Hopefully I can beat him during university, maybe get a better GPA, better achievements and maybe even a better job in the future. He has been an inspiration for me to work really hard in university.

  35. I am the last child of three children. I have two older sisters. There is a huge gap between my age and two of my older sisters. They are six and five years older than me. I used to fight a lot with my second sister. We fought only because of simplest things. About who control the tv remote, for example. Or about who is going to eat the last chicken nugget. We never feel like competing to each other about our ability or any other things. Because my parents told me that each child is different than the other child, they must have their own ability. That is why we never compete. What we only think is we must do our best to make our parents proud, that is all that matters to us than competing against each other. We make them proud from our own ability through education or hobby such as getting a good grade or winning a dance competition.

  36. I have a brother, he is 4 years older than me. A few years ago, when we lived together in Kediri, we argued over little thing in many occasions. In my perspective, having four-year gap made a conflict in our life. The four-year gap made him feel he is far older than me and creating a sense that he is the leader and I should obey him, but not the other way around. He seems too bossy and that annoys me, so we argued a lot. He always shouted at me on little thing that he can handle himself, like picking the Phone, or when there was a package delivered to home, I did not accept that he was being too bossy so another conflict emerged between us. As time goes by, we started to understand each other and we reduce arguing on unimportant things. Now that we are living together in Jogja, we became a great supporting system, we do not argue that much and we tend to help each other.

  37. In my family, there are six family members: my father, my mother, two older brothers, a little brother who’s not little anymore, and I. I’ve never had any issues or whatsoever with my two older brothers. The reason for this is probably because the age difference between me with my oldest brother and my younger big brother is quite far. I’m eleven years apart from my oldest brother; and ten years apart with my younger big brother. It’s a different story for my little brother and I though; I am just a year older than my little brother. We fought a lot when we were younger. We argued a lot about some minor things; and our older brothers would say that what we argued about was silly. However, each fight that we had at that time always last for just about fifteen minutes; after that fifteen minutes passed, we would laugh again about other things. Now that we are older, we never fight anymore. But sometimes, I miss that moment arguing with my brother.

  38. I live in a family where I am the oldest child having 1 little sister. I am 3 years older than my sister. When talking about sibling rivalry, I can't say much. Since my sister is the only daughter and I am the only son, sibling rivalry does not really exist. I rarely fight with my sister because I was taught that my sister should not become a rival, but should become my responsibility. I remembered the only time where I fought with my sister was because of chocolates. During that time, my mother brought chocolates from overseas. She knew that my sister and I love chocolate. Unfortunately, she brought only a little amount of chocolate. There, my sister and I fought, debating on who should get more. I hard-headedly say that I should get more because I am the older brother. Eventually, she cried and I am told to be the better one, by giving my chocolates to her in order for her to become happy.

  39. I am the oldest child and I have 2 sisters. They are currently in high school. I am 3 years older than my first sister and 4 years older than my second sister. Because my sisters are only a year apart, they are very close. Having 2 sisters has its own advantage and disadvantage. One thing that I dislike about them is they like to team up and tell my parents every bad thing that I've done. They are very noisy and like to scream which is very disturbing. They used to be very dependent towards me. When they have things to do such as homework or any task, they easily come at me and tell me to do all of their assignment, but I always refuse. We mostly have different views on how we see something, which at the end makes us argue and fight quite a lot, nevertheless, I know deep down they love me as much as I love them

  40. I think back then when my sister, who is two years older than me, was in her last year of middle school while there’s me in my first year of middle school, as a guy that had just went through his puberty, I started to rebel. I wondered about a lot of things and rebelled a lot against my parents and this is what you would call the rebellious stage. It’s supposed to be very common that guys rebel a lot than girls and since I rebelled a lot, my sister was like the good kid in the family. My parents would often get mad at me for doing stuff that I shouldn’t do and compared me to my sister almost all the time. At some point, I guess I grew hatred at my sister and distanced myself with her or fought with her more often. However, as I grew up, I became more mature and became more civilized with my sister.

  41. I have two siblings, one older sister and a younger brother. However, the sibling rivalry that I’m about to tell you has always been between my brother and me. Basically, we would argue at almost everything. Yet, there is this one rivalry that seems to never go away no matter how one of us tries so hard to turn the other cheek; a rivalry that revolves around our height. To be completely honest as I reluctantly admit in true defeat, my younger brother is perhaps one centimetre taller than me. Despite spending far less hours on indulging oneself in some form of exercise, be it going for a stroll around our neighbourhood in the weekends’ mornings or riding a bike, he would tease me for being shorter than him by standing next to me whenever there was a mirror nearby just to remind me of the sad truth every time I seemed to forget. As a result, I would argue back by telling him that I do far more exercises every weekend when all he did was play online video games with his friends and refused to comply whenever I invited, no, ASKED him to join me in my weekend morning exercise around our neighbourhood. As for my sister, she’s the tallest in the family and shows very little care towards this sibling rivalry that exists between my brother and me. In spite of all the meaningless petty little arguments that we have and seem to always have a time for, without us ever realising, they consolidate the very components that strengthen the brotherly bond between us. A bond that would make both of us miss one another without the presence of the other. As for my sister, my brother and I have long developed a deep sibling relationship with her that doesn’t have to be expressed through constant communications, as we already know that we care for one another without having to go through the hardships of stating or proving the whole thing.

  42. I am the second child in the total of three children in my family. My younger brother is actually my twin brother. I can easily say that I often quarrel with him. We argue over so many things, starting from things like missing eraser and portions of food to things like missing phone and achieving high score in something. Despite having those quarrels, we tend to support each other through different ways. An interesting fact about twins is that we do have our own language that only we could understand. It’s like an inside joke but more of a conversation than a joke. This twin language thing is called ‘idioglossia’. The funny thing is that my older brother which is not a twin could understand the twin language between me and my younger brother. This happens because when we were little we often communicate to each other using those language and thus my older brother understands my idioglossia up until now.

  43. My family lives in different cities. While my parents live in Jakarta, I am studying in Jogja while my younger brother lives in Bandung. When I was younger, we did fight a lot and it was very intense. However, as we grew older, my father kept on telling me that I need to take care of my brother regardless of the circumstances since he is the only sibling I have. I would say that the fact we became further from each other in terms of our place of living, we actually became closer because we tend to take for granted the presence of our family when we are together. We often have a group video call, and although it may last for only three minutes, knowing that your family checks up on you on a regular basis always makes me feel recharged. It is always nice to keep in touch with those you love the most.

  44. My family consists of five persons. I have two brothers, one big brother and one younger brother. I'm the second or we could say the middle child and the only daughter in my family. My older brother is 3 years older than me and my younger brother is 5 years younger than me. To be honest, I rarely quarrel with both of my brothers. I don't have a lot of experience about sibling rivalry but I do believe that sometimes, both of my brothers are jealous of me because I'm the only daughter. Being the only daughter in the family is giving me a lot of advantages. My parents treat me differently since I was their only daughter and sometimes I believe that the way my parents treat me as a girl made both of my brothers jealous. Even though I am the only daughter, that doesn't mean I'm spoiled. But, if we compare how spoiled I'm compared with my brothers, I could say that I'm being more spoiled. It is much easier for me to get what I want and I believe that it is causing a sibling rivalry.

    1. Kia, I don’t know you are a middle child of three, moreover the only daughter in the family! What a plot twist! For your information, I’m also the only girl my parents have and I have a big brother and a little brother. But the only difference is, I don’t think I can relate to you who feel like being more spoiled compared to your two brothers. When I was in elementary school, I didn’t get the same attention as both of my brothers. My father was always with my older brother (teaching him stuffs like mathematics, science, etc.) while my mother took care of my younger brother. The tradition in my family was when it was already 6 PM, the television had to be turned off and everyone had to study. I remember sitting alone with my book and stationary stuffs while my parents were with my siblings. I told my home room teacher about this and she talked about this issue to my parents when they came to school to take my report book. Since then, I think my parents tried to give their attention equally and honestly I didn’t know how to deal with their sudden change of behaviour because I was used to being alone.

  45. I have a younger brother who is five years younger than me, both my brother and I always have something to rival at since we were young. When I was twelve, both of us had taekwondo training, we started together so we were in the same level of belts, but we competed in tournaments, and we also indirectly competing for the number of medals. We couldn’t spar with each other in tournaments because of the different age and weight classes. Other than taekwondo, both of us also play the drums. What’s funny is that my brother admitted that I play the drums much better than he does. I just love drumming, you just get that really good sensation whenever you hit the drums to maintain the tempo of a song and filling-in arrangements of really cool drum chops. However, I don’t think my brother enjoys playing the drums as much as I do, he is often lazy when preparing to perform with his band.

  46. My parents have two sons, me and my younger brother. My brother and i often fight over small things, up until now. Being a younger brother, you should have some respect to your older brother, or your siblings. My brother doesn’t put any respect on me as he thought that my parents will always support him and protect him. Actually it’s true. My parents always protect my brother whenever i got into a fight with him. Even though he was the one who ‘ignites the fire’, it was always me who got the punishment. My brother likes to do whatever he likes, because he knew my parent won’t mad at him. He likes to break into my room and messing up with my stuffs, and whenever i told him to stop, he would mock me, and then we fight in my room. He often ran off and cried whenever i hit him, and snitch it to my mom with the story he made himself, to make him look innocent.

  47. When I was young, around the age of 4, I was the only child in the family and my mother was pregnant with the second child. I wanted a little sister very badly because I thought it would be nice to have someone to accompany me play and preferably have someone the opposite gender, so I could act like the ‘big protective brother’. Unfortunately, a male came out of my mother, so I was stuck with a little brother instead of a little sister that I wanted. I was filled with mixed emotions: grateful, confused, disappointed and mostly angry. I was grateful because my mother and the baby was healthy, confused because I prayed to God for a little sister, disappointed because of the outcome and angry just because I despised my little brother for not being the girl that I wanted. I couldn’t accept the reality, I hated my little brother so much to the point where one day when he was sleeping, I placed a pillow over his face and started jumping on top of it. If it wasn’t because my mom walked in to the room, he would be dead by now and to make things worse, this incident happened when my little brother was less than 2 years old.

  48. I had one little brother, his name is Joshia. Referring to the fact that we are five and a half years apart, we sometimes still fought over little things. The thing that bother me the most, is when my brother borrow my stuff and then he broke it, it drives me crazy. My brother once borrowed my iPad and he dropped it and the screen was shattered, I was so angry with my brother. The other things that bother me, is when my brother does not obey me or when he did not listen to my advice. But, even though when we were little we often fought with each other, as times goes by, we grow up, and we became more mature. Every now and then, I sometimes still play together with my brother, whether it is playing playstation together with my brother, playing minecarft, or even sometime PUBG together. I am very thankful that I had my brother, because if I don’t, I would be very lonely, but I think that one sibling is enough.

We rarely got into a fight or experienced any type of sibling's rivalry. We're just one of those sisters that looks out for each other from far away. But now that I've gone through 3 years being apart from them I sometime miss their absence, our inner jokes and everything. Because we rarely see each other now, with me being in college and my sister is in a boarding school high school and my youngest sister is with my parents far away in Riau. We now learn to appreciate and cherish the moment that we have with each other, cause we don't see each other that often. Now that the three of us are getting bigger and I hope wiser it is easier for us to understand how comunicate with each other like how siblings are supposed to.

Me and my sister always fight about everything when we are kids from who have the higher score to something as mundane as who sit in the front seat on the car. Usually the fights don’t escalate quickly, but when it does the fight become so bad that some stuff on the home got damaged. But when I get older I become less competitive towards my sister and start to be more mature to handle conflict with her. There are still some rivalry between me and my sister but the fight never escalate so quickly and no things broken from our fight. These days we only fight about what food to eat or which bed room we will have. most rivalry I fought against her will be a waste of time since my parents usually defend my sister since she is the younger one and I am the older brother that have to understand about his sister behaviour.

  51. Rivalry between siblings is a common thing happened. Because for me personally my relationship with my brother is a love-hate relationship, meaning that when we I am around mt brother always challenge me or debate me about everything even about the simplest thing such as food. But if we are apart we tend to miss each other. I remember me and my brother fight over food in a restaurant in one of the mall in Jakarta, the food is a type of dim sum which both me and my brother loves it. One day there was the last dim sum on the plate and I already said that is mine and then my brother fight over it because he wanted that last piece of dim sum. My father already told us that we can order more if we wanted to, but we didn’t listen and suddenly the plate fell to the ground and shattered all over the floor. That is the most intense fight I’ve had during my 18 years of existence in this world, just because of one piece of dim sum.

  52. Despite having two other brothers and a sister, the most intense rivalry often happens between me and my older brother. I think this is because the age gap between us is only three years. My older brother and I often fight on small things. Back when we were very young, we usually fight each other if only one of us were given a new toy or an ice cream, which is why my parents always bought two of the things that they are going to give to ensure that we won’t fight each other if only one of us were given something by our parents. Also, often time I would fight with my older brother because he used to tease me a lot regarding my inability to pronounce R back then as well criticizing me on how I used to be a cry baby. The point where our rivalry started to diminish was when my brother decided to continue his middle school in Australia. I was left with my eldest younger brother who is still a little kid who is still learning how to speak so basically, I had no one to play around to messed with anymore. Reminiscing about our rivalry gives me a weird feeling because those time feels like it doesn’t happen that long and I realized how old I’m getting and that at some point I will be working and be married.

  53. In my family, there are three children, I have one little brother and one big sister, so I am the middle one. Growing up with them of course we couldn’t avoid having a fight over something. When I was a little kid I usually fight with both my sister and brother. It was more of fighting over materials such as food or toy. I was an egoistic person when I was a kid so it was hard for me share what was mine. I have seven years age gap with my sister, so usually she was the one who scold me. Now we all are grown up, and I ended up getting closer to my sister so I don’t have a fight that much anymore with my sister. However, I still have fight with my younger brother. My younger brother is really different from me and my sister, he is not good at getting along with people. My parents also know this and decided to go easy on him most of the time. Whenever I make mistake my parents would scold me right away but that’s not what happened to my brother, even though he is the one who is usually problematic. Whenever there is problem arises and my brother is involved, he doesn’t get scolded as much as me and my sister do. So that is some siblings rivalry that I have experienced.

  54. If we talk about my sibling rivalry story, I have 1001 stories about it. But, there is 1 story which I always remember. The first story was called “the shit remote”. It happened when I was in 4th grader of elementary school and my brother was at 6th grader of elementary school. The story began when I wanted to see a cartoon movie in Nickelodeon channel, but my brother didn’t like that cartoon, he wanted to see FI racing on Global TV. The program TV would begin at the same time. So, after we did the same course, we were competing to get the remote. Who could get the TV remote first, he could see the TV program. Then, someone who got the TV remote first was my brother. But, because I was so arrogant before, I snatched the TV remote by bitting his stomach and I got that. He got injure on his stomach and I cried after that because I felt guilty to injure him. Thus, I searched for the first aid kit in my home and I treated his pain. However, in the end, I asked for pardon with him and we bury the hatched.

  55. I am the oldest child in my family, and I only have one little sister who’s 10 years old. She’s 8 years younger than me, which is a pretty big age gap. We actually get along really well, due to our age difference. We don’t fight a lot, maybe even never. I used to make her cry when we were little because of how I wouldn’t stop annoying her, by tickling her or pinching her cheeks. There were also times where I would get mad and ignored her because she would act too childish; thinking about it now, I was the childish one for getting mad because she was way younger than me and she was, in fact, a little child. However, that’s really it, and these happened a long, long time ago. Now, we get along really well. We’re not interested in the same things, and we have completely different lives. I’m already in college, and she’s not even done with elementary school. I think we never fight because we don’t have things to fight about, It would be kind of ridiculous to still be fighting with each other.

  56. My family only consist of four people. My dad, my mom, my older sister, and then me, the youngest one of them all. The age gap between my sister is only five years apart so were actually pretty close, even though we have different gender. To be honest, we would always fight for the tv remote, since that is the only entertainment we have when we were still a kid. And every time we fought for the remote control, my mom would always calm the two of us down and then starts to lecture both of us so that we shouldn’t fought for the remote and told us to make an agreement on who gets to watch the tv that day. We did as our mom said so but, even after we made an agreement we would still fight for the remote until she, our mom, doesn’t even care anymore. Years passed and the both of us grew up, less fighting, and minding our own business. Although I said that, we would still back each other up and care for each other. Even when some people said that we don’t look out for each other because we have different gender, we would definitely and always aid for each other because we are siblings.

Me and him would fight over who gets to play the playstation because he would always play it first and when I ask him to take turn he just said wait a moment and of course that ‘moment’ was like 3 hours or longer and at that time I would tell my parents about it but my brother would just ignore them. As time flies my fights between my brother has stop and we nearly fight again because we could understand each other now and I am not really a person who likes to get mad or hearing other people getting mad. Now me and my brother get along really well and sometimes I missed the time when we had those rivalry.

  58. For me, the story is quite impressive. It is about my younger cousin sister.

When I was nine, I got the news that I have got a new baby cousin! That did not bother me until, one day, I saw my mom cradling her in her arms, that too, for constant 3 - 4 hours continuously. The poor kid would not sleep, and the lazy mother (my aunt) was fast asleep. This infuriated me, and I asked mom not to do it for a long while sacrificing her sleep.

When she grew up around 1.5 years old, I found out that she starts to behave like a real monkey in our presence. And I became her punching bag until the last two years. She even got a scolding from me, at points, unnecessarily. For this, my dad used to give me a piece of my mind, while she used to cry and beat me with her tiny hands.

These incidents fired up my boiler even more, and I started detecting my sister. Soi stopped hearing any progression news about my sister. I used to get angry with her very often. My elder cousin sister used to love her to the core.

When she turned three, one night, before she went to bed, I was already into my bed. She came to check on me and tell me good night. She suddenly became calm, looked straight into my eyes, and then, Voila! my anger started to vanish quite fast. From then on, I knew I have gone through my sibling rivalry phase, successfully!

Our age difference is 3 years, but somehow, during most of the time together I act as if I am her older brother. I also have two younger brothers. One is 5 years younger than me, and the other is 9 years younger than me. In the end, I have to be the older brother to my sister and my brothers. I listen to their problems and try to help them. But during other times, I become their problems. I love to tease them and joke around, and depending on their mood I am considered a fun brother, or an annoying one. But I don't care whether they’re in a bad mood or in a good mood, I really love to tease them. And most of the time, we ended up fighting.

It was when she asked me to give her my nugget, I dipped it into the ketchup, directly tucked it to her mouth. All she gave was that surprise face and vomitus! Nanny helped to clean and asked us what was really happened, but my sister said nothing. That made me felt totally guilty and asked her to play along again. The jinx has gone to a turnover when she kicked me on my eyebrow for the reason that I forgot. I was crying because the wound hurt so much. It was fun to spend my childhood with her, though. But the time is off for us to fight, yet we are being closer and supportive to each other.

  61. I have a little brother named Daniel. He is five years younger than me. So now I think that he is 13 years old. Being the little brother that he is, he likes to tease me and even make me irritated by his actions. One day, he walked into my room and took all of my lipstick and cut them off. I was so angry at the time, and I eventually ripped his favorite comic book to pieces. It made him so angry until he cried. That was the beginning of our rivalry. So through the years, we would do something that make the other person so irritated and angry. It is kind of stupid but we did it anyway. But when I graduated high school, he stopped doing the things that I hate. At first I was confused why he did not do the things that irritated me. Then I realized that he was trying to make me happy before I moved to Yogyakarta for collage. Besides his actions in the past, I really love my little brother and I kind of miss our rivalry in a way because I realized that it made us more closer to each other.

  62. Me and my little brother has a pretty wide age gap. Being older by 6 years, meaning that I’m used to be the only child who is loved and pampered. So when he was still a toddler and couldn’t say a word, I used to blame all of my wrongdoings to him, hehe. When he’s already in elementary school, we used to fight a lot. Like, A LOT. We fought for the TV remote, we fought for the computer, we fought for basically every little thing. When we were younger, I remember that we used to do physical fights. One day, one of my teacher asked me about a small scar on my face, and I said that it was because my brother scratched my face when we had a fight on the night before. But now, both of us are more mature than what we used to be and we barely bicker anymore (mostly because he’s already tired of arguing with me).
