Some Worst Case Scenarios...

CAR FIRE

You're driving along scenic State Route 64 in Arizona on a hot, sunny day. About 70 miles into your trip, just past Grandview Point, you notice the car's thermostat move into the red zone. Minutes later, you smell something burning and notice smoke coming through the dashboard vents. You turn the car off, and when you get out, you see flames coming from under the hood of the car. Do you:
(A) Open the hood and evaluate the situation
(B) Move away from the car and take cover
(C) Check under the car for a fuel leak
(D) Pour soda on the flames

DUMPSTER DIVE

Working late one night, you hear a violent noise and possible gunshots in the hallway outside your office door. The door is the only safe way out of your office, but you don't want to open it to investigate or wait for someone dangerous to corner you inside. Your only other option is to climb out your fourth-story window. You quickly open the window and notice a Dumpster in the alley below. It is full of empty cardboard boxes. Hesitating for a moment, you watch as the door handle to your office turns. Do you:

(A) Leap out and as far away from the building as possible
(B) Jump straight down into the Dumpster, executing a three-quarter somersault to land on your back
(C) Jump straight down into the Dumpster, keeping your body vertical and landing on your feet
(D) Hang onto the window ledge by your fingertips until you believe it is safe to reenter your office

BLACK WIDOW

Before winter sets in, you decide to move your pile of cordwood into a shed to shield it from the elements. Though it has been a wet summer and fall, the wood has been covered by a tarp and is generally dry. Near the bottom of the pile, you remove a piece of wood and see a spiderweb nearly a foot in diameter with a black spider at its outer edge. You examine the spider more closely and recognize it as a black widow. You know that female black windows are highly poisonous, while males are harmless. To determine if the spider is male or female, do you:

(A) Check for blue markings on its back
(B) Check for red or orange hourglass-shaped markings on the spider's abdomen
(C) Check for red spots and white bars on the spider's abdomen
(D) Check for a bull's-eye pattern on the spider's back

MOB OF KANGAROOS

During a train trip through Australia's southern desert, you've experienced wonderful scenery and long vistas. At a short layover, the conductor suggests that passengers can get out and take pictures if they choose. You get off the train and wander onto the sandy soil, only to come face-to-face with a mob of seven or eight kangaroos. As you slowly approach for a close-up photo, one kangaroo begins thumping his large feet. Do you:

(A) Continue approaching without showing fear
(B) Move away quickly so you are more than ten feet from the closest kangaroo
(C) Back away slowly
(D) Stand up straight and tall and open your coat wide to make yourself seem larger

SWORD FIGHT

On a trip to a local Renaissance fair, your friends encourage you to participate in a mock sword fight with one of the fair's expert swordsmen. It's only after you are in the ring with your fencing foil you realize your opponent takes this very seriously. Well over six feet tall and dressed in full chain mail, he is coming straight at you with his foil over his head. Do you:

(A) Move in close, keeping your sword above your head and parallel to the ground
(B) Take a step back and try to duck the blow
(C) Keep your sword in a vertical position and parry the blow to the side
(D) Step back and swing the sword like a bat to hit him in the knees

At some point I will give you the "answers" [see if you agree with them or not!] according to The Worst Case Scenario Survival Handbook by Joshua Piven and David Borgenicht  [2005] from which these examples are taken.

  1. Speaking of this car fire accident, I got excited because my family have been in that position. So it was my mother and sister in one fine afternoon. When they were in a traffic jam behind the traffic light, suddenly the brake become hard and there was a smoke up from the front lid of the car. My mother and sister were so panicked and left the car. It was quiet a scene at that time, because it was in the middle of the street. First it was only smoke coming out of the front lid, after that a fire start to come out of the front lid. Well it was not a big fire but enough to make everyone freaked out and scared. I remember my mom told me that a bunch of firemen came and put out the fire. Even, the news about that car was put into a newspaper the next day. Ya it was quiet a lesson and after that my family sold the car so that it will be safer. So, from that accident, If I got to experience that accident, the first thing I will do will be leaving the car at least until I see that it is safer. Because I prioritize myself and I know that material things like car can be bought again.

  2. Reading the dumpster dive scenario, I got scared because I know that this accident can happen to anyone and we should be prepared if something like this happen to us. For me, if these choices are the choices I have, I will choose to jump straight down into the Dumpster, keeping your body vertical and landing on your feet and then run as fast as possible. I dont choose hang onto the window ledge by your fingertips until I believe it is safe to reenter the office because it will be dangerous. What if the villain tour the whole office and that found you there. I dont choose the first option, leap out and as far away from the building as possible, because the way will be impossible and who know if we will also meet the villain somewhere along our way. And last, I will not choose to jump straight down into the Dumpster, executing a three-quarter somersault to land on my back because I know that is dangerous for my life. Back part is a sensitive part of our body and that should be taken well care.

  3. Black widows are notorious spiders identified by the colored, hourglass-shaped mark on their abdomens. Several species answer to the name, and they are found in temperate regions around the world. These spiders are dangerous and poisonous for the female black widows. If I am in that position, I will check for red or orange hourglass-shaped markings on the spider's abdomen. Because, male and female of widow is defined by the colour. The colour of the male is brighter than the female’s. I will not choose to check for blue markings on its back because that will be difficult and not so accurate. I will not also choose to check for red spots and white bars on the spider's abdomen because that is not an accurate way to define the gender of a black widow. Lastly, I will not choose to check for a bull's-eye pattern on the spider's back because that will also be un accurate.

  4. Regarding the situations above, it is sometimes clear on what you should do, but there are instances that sometimes don’t show the full extent of the problem.

For the car fire, I suggest pouring soda on the flames, as soda can act as a makeshift fire retardant; though I doubt that you would bring enough soda to fully extinguish the flames, such quantities would be in the liters, depending on the size of the fire. I recommend you call for help, even if you can successfully put out the fire.

For the dumpster dive dilemma, I recommend hiding in the office and wait out the trouble. It is reasonable to jump into a dumpster full of empty cardboard boxes, but it’s not reasonable to jump from a four-story window. If the dumpster is large enough, you can make a successful descend; and if you do decide to jump, I recommend landing on your back to maximize the area of impact to reduce pressure, and overall force acting on your body. Another thing to consider is if the sound of the impact might draw attention to yourself; if there is less background noise to mask the sound of the impact, you could be tempted to take the leap. You can try to hang on the ledge of your window to wait for it to pass, but I doubt you have the grip force it takes to last that long; but if you do, you could try that.

For the Black Widow dilemma, it shows the extensive need to identify if the spider is a male or female. In reality it doesn’t matter, as the spider should be treated with caution regardless of gender or species. Black widows are very dangerous; as a bite from one would inject you with venom stronger than that of a rattlesnake, but they only attack when provoked. Needless to say it’s best to stay away from spiders that pose a significant danger. If it was me in that situation, I would just attempt to remove the spider with a stick to keep it away from whatever I’m doing.

For the kangaroo dilemma, it would just be a simple matter of backing away slowly. When approaching any territorial animal, its best to respect its domain and back away, doing your best to not appear as a threat. Kangaroos aren’t typically aggressive but it still not safe to approach any wild animal.

As for the last dilemma, I would not even consider this being a dangerous situation. It’s obvious that what you are doing is just an act and no one has ever been seriously injured because of something like this. It’s also worth noting that the swords used are made of foil, and are very much safe.

  5. From the events listed above, I have experienced two of those listed. The first is a burning car, and the second is sword war although in my case it’s not really a war, it’s fencing. I will start it all with the car burning. Honestly, I've experienced so many things that could lead to bad scenarios or outcomes, and even not infrequently could bring me to death. Hence, in this comment, I will write the top 3 incidents that had occurred in my life.
This one incident happened when I was around 5 years old. The event is still vivid in my head up to this day, it was New Year’s Eve, December 31, 2005. That year, my parents agreed to celebrate New Year outside of the house which we rarely do, or may I say never. Not something surprising when it comes to Jakarta especially at times like this, we were stuck in the traffic jam. We ended up spending the night seeing fireworks only from the car. Suddenly out of nowhere, there was a light leading to our car.

    1. At first we were not aware that the light was fireworks, but because the light was coming at such a rapid rate, we were finally able to recognize that the light coming towards us was fireworks. We panicked, not really knowing what to do because we were literally stuck and all the doors were blocked by the other vehicles. The road couldn’t be any more crowded. We just sat there. It only took seconds for the fireworks to get in contact, our car's glass started cracking. Right after that, not only we could see the smoke coming out from the hood, we literally could smell the smoke. People around us also panicked at how thick the smoke was. I was lucky because my father was a very calm person in dealing with situations like this. He managed to calm everyone which was my mother, my 3 siblings, and I. I was just dumbfounded, I didn't know what to do. And in a split second, the engine just went off and there was a loud blast coming from our hood. Thankfully the people around us helped us to get out of the car. It’s one of those scenes you don’t want to see. I hope this will be my only experience involving car fire.

    2. The second incident happened when I was fencing. At that time I participated in the national fencing competition and made it into the last 8. My opponent at that time was a national athlete who had won many national championships so technically she’s a professional. While I had never – in my entire life – won one because I’m just a newbie who just joined this sport for 2 years, and this was my first ever tournament. So while competing against her, she often aimed at my neck. I don't know how many neck-aimed-hits she strike, but one slipped inside my helmet and immediately hit my neck. I happened to play an epee sword, a sword that had a blunt tip but had the widest diameter compared to the other swords. So when the sword hit my neck, I felt like choking. Luckily my adrenaline overcome the pain, so I didn’t let it take a toll on me.

      Delete
    3. Fortunately, I defeated her, so the next day when I saw myself on the mirror, I saw it more like "battle wounds". This also happened after the national tournament, when I joined the province-level championship, but the difference this time was it was in fact more brutal than the national tournament. Not only did she aimed at my neck, but she also aimed at my legs and armpit. Because when you do fencing, the most painful points are the leg, neck, and near the armpit. Yes you heard that, armpit. Because somewhere near the armpit, there is a part where the foam in the fencing clothing which supposed to protect you, has a gap. So if you get hit near the armpit, it’ll directly hit the bones on your shoulders. But all this is commensurate with the experience and results you get. And what I love the most about fencing, it’s not just an ordinary sport. To me, it’s also an art.

    4. The third incident is not written on the article above but I just want to share it. I actually wrote this on one of the topics for mid-semester exam, if I’m not mistaken it was “Describe a significant event from your childhood that still affects you even to this day”, but I’d like to share it here.
This event happened when I was 7, my hobby was playing in the rain. I fell hard on my lower back, and I unintentionally injured my nerves that it made me blind. I tried to call for help but I seemed to lose my voice and I couldn’t breathe. I also slammed my hands on the floor yet no one heard, because I was outside, and on top of that, my family was having a feast so it was a “double hit”. Thankfully, my dad came out looking for me and saw me suffocating.

      Delete
    5. So he basically hung me upside down to allow me to breathe. In that particular moment, I was bawling my eyes out but at the same time I was starting to appreciate the moment. I could feel the rain hitting my face. I felt helpless so I kind of just let it take a toll on me. I thought that was the end of everything— of me. I kind of just gave up on getting better but I felt selfish because if I would succumb to my injuries, it would have destroyed my parents especially my father. Because in that moment, I was laying on his hands. It affects me both emotionally and physically up to this day, like sometimes I could feel my lower back burning for no reason. But this accident taught me to appreciate all the trivial things in life. Because in that split second of darkness, I realized just how dark the world seemed to be, but at the same time for the first time in my life, I could see how beautiful it is without having to look.

    6. In the first comment I should've wrote "......those listed: car fire and sword war. Although in my case it’s not really a war, it’s fencing. I will start it all with the car fire. Honestly, I've experienced many things that could lead to bad scenarios or outcomes, and not infrequently could bring me to death."

    7. And I should've replaced all sword wars to sword fights.

  6. If I got to be in the position when my car is burning, the first thing I would do is to move away from the car and take cover. That is the first thing I would do because it will be the safest for me. I want to take the safest way for me because I love myself and I still want to live, so I will not take any risk that could risk my life. I will not do the first option, to open the hood and evaluate the situation, because who knows if when I opened the hood and check it, the machine will blow up in front of my face. And also I would not take the third option, to check under the car for a fuel leak, because, again, who knows if the machine will also blow up when I check under the car. And for the last option, pour soda on the flames, I will also not take it. Because that means I want to kill myself

  7. I ever experienced dangerous incident, it is not directly happened to me but it happened to my father. When I was a little, my brother and I used to play car toys named Tamiya. It is a practical plastic model kit and we need to assemble the set to create a car. One day, we decided to play Tamiya and my father is the one who assemble the set of the car. My brother and I are very impatience as we want to play as soon as possible. As a result, my father accidentally cut his own finger with a cutter. At first, my brother and I were not aware about the incident until my mother was freaking out and rushed into the nearest hospital. Fortunately, the cut is not serious, my father was able to get an advanced treatment. My parent was trying to hide the incident from us but at the end they told the story and we decided to not play Tamiya anymore.

  8. This is an interesting article with a compilation of scenarios for us to decide and so when I read this article, I started imagining myself going through those events. This is also helpful because it is important for us to know what we should do if these occurred to us. So, if something like these happened to us, we would know/remember the first thing to do (assuming we know the answer) and what NOT to do. If I experience a car fire, the most obvious thing to do would be to move away from the car and take over. The reason for this is because we should value ourselves more than whatever’s in the car or the car itself. We don’t need to save the car because it could be insured, or even be bought again where else a second life isn’t sold anywhere, nor does it have a price tag. Option A would be viable if you have mechanical knowledge, C is just a plain idiotic option because flames are still flames regardless of the combination of a fuel leak or not, and as for option D; bro, are you low key a firefighter?

    1. Talking about crime scene and tense moments like this ‘dumpster dive’, I always find myself unable to answer this because luckily, I have never been in this position and I hope to not experience such thing throughout my life. However, it is important for us to know what to do in critical, life and death moments. It is vital to always be prepared for everything. Personally speaking, the first thing I would do is to leap out as far away from the building as possible because this would be the safest and probable decision to do. By doing this, you will prevent the possibility of facing the criminal or exposing yourself to the criminal for witnessing the crime. As for the other options, I must admit they are all wise decisions. Option C ensures you protect the important parts of your body such as the head and your spine which also leads to option B: doing a three-quarter somersault to prevent extra tension on your bones. As for option D, why not hang onto the window ledge with your fingertips and then jump to decrease the height of fall?

  9. I am just going to joke around with these answers since everyone else is answering too seriously.

Car fire: I would choose option D and pour soda on the flames, have you ever poured soda on flames? Neither have I, so I'm thinking "oh shoot, my car is on fire... what would happen if I poured soda on it?" and I would just pour soda right on that flame. It would probably not help put out the flame and blow the car up and kill me.

Dumpster diving: none of the above I guess, I would go up to the sound and say "hey, I got 6 frickin' ews comments due this morning. Please keep the noise down or we are gonna have a problem" then probably get shot and die.

Black widow: I'm not an Arachnologist (knew this without google) so I would have no frickin' clue how to tell if a black widow spider is male or female. I'd pick it up and let it bite me and hope to be spider-man when I wake up. But I'd probably just get venom in my system and die.

Kangaroo: There was this viral video of a guy punching a kangaroo straight in the face. The kangaroo just hopped away, I'd probably do the same but the kangaroo would kick me in face and kill me pobably.

Sword fight: well over 6 feet tall and running at me full speed with chainmail? Who in the right mind wouldn't just run away, no chance I'm even gonna stay in that ring for more than 5 seconds. I would do a quick 180 degree turn and rund full speed.

I hope my answers put a smile on your faces, thanks for reading.

  10. I think for case one where you see fire under the hood car, I think the safest way to approach the problem is to move away from the car and take cover. When you see flames coming from underneath your hood you obviously won’t open the hood of the car and evaluate the problem because who knows your car might explode when you open the car’s hood. You also don’t want to check the bottom of the car for fuel leak because if the source of the flames comes from the fuel tank, the gasoline might explode towards you, causing you to be burn from the hot flaming gasoline. Pouring a soda on the flames also might not be the best option because you don’t know if the fire is caused from electrical malfunction or oil leak, so it’s not the safest option out of all 4. I think moving away from the car and take cover is the safest option. By moving far away from the car and taking cover, we can protect ourselves from the potential burning gasoline that’s caused by the explosion of the car.

    1. I think to determine if the Black Widow spider is a male or female, we should check for an hourglass-shaped marking on the spider’s abdomen. Female Black Widows are commonly known to have an hourglass-shaped marking on the underside of their abdomen while the male Black Widows are common to have either stripe or spots on the upper side of their abdomen. Both the male and female Black Widow are venomous but the female’s venom is known to be dangerous to humans due to large venom glands that they have. The result of the female Black Widow’s venom is very severe. The bite of the female Black Widow may lead to seizure and sometimes even death, depending on the condition of the person who is bitten by the spider. It can also cause symptoms like breathing difficulty caused by paralysis of the diaphragm, headache due to an increase of blood pressure, chills, and fever. The female Black Widow spider is often identified with an hourglass-shaped marking and is known to be very venomous.

    2. In the case where a Kangaroo started to approach me, I would choose the option C. I would rather back away slowly and hide behind a bush or a tree. Not only that, but I would also back away without making a noise, which if I did I would potentially alert other kangaroos, and make the particular kangaroo that approached me to come at a fast rate. Choosing other options like continuing to approach without fear, stand up straight and tall and opening your coat to make yourself look larger are a bad idea. If you choose to approach without fear, the chance is you might be attacked by the kangaroo since you’re showing a sign of threat or challenging the kangaroo, and the same thing will happen if you choose to look big in front of the kangaroo. When a kangaroo gets angry, they can be very dangerous. Kangaroos are equipped with a sharp claw on their hind feet that could rip your body open if you were to be kicked by them. In the case of a potential kangaroo attack, I think it’s better to move away slowly thus, making option C the safest option for this scenario.

  11. I think the best and safest option if your car starting to catch on fire is to move away from the car and take cover or option B, because I think safety is more important than saving the car. I think opening the hood and evaluating the situation is dangerous, because there is already fire coming out from the hood, which means the source of fire is from inside the hood, this means that by opening the hood of the car, there is a chance that the car can suddenly explode when you open the hood of the car and hits your body with flames. Checking under the car for a fuel leak I think is as dangerous as opening the hood, because if the fuel leak turns out to be under the car, when checking, your face can be sprayed by the burning flames. By pouring soda on the flames, I am not sure that it will completely extinguish the fire, because if there is a fuel leak, the fire will keep coming out, and by pouring soda, I think it will cause further electronical damage to the car and maybe make things even worse.

    1. For the dumpster dive case, I think I will choose to jump straight down into the dumpster, and keeping my body vertical and landing on my feet or option C. I chose this action, because I think this is the safest option I can have, by knowing that there are piles of cardboard boxes inside the dumpster, I knew that this will give me some protection when I land. And I did not choose the somersault, because what if we did not execute it rightly, and we did not land on our back, it will injured us. By leaping out from the building, I think it is not safe, because I think it is the same as suicide, because there is nothing to protect us when we land. And I think hanging out onto the window ledge by our fingertips is also impossible, because this is not a Hollywood movie, and hanging onto a ledge with our fingertips is really hard.

      Delete
    2. When we are faced by a mob of kangaroos, I think we need to be careful, because I knew that kangaroos can be extremely aggressive, because of this I think I will choose to back away slowly or choose option C. I think the most reckless thing to do is to continue approaching the kangaroos without showing any fear, because I think the kangaroos will feel threaten and will start attacking us. Also, by moving quickly, I think it is not a good idea, because wild animals are threaten by sudden movements, and will consider the movement as threatening, and maybe the kangaroos will start chasing us. Standing up tall and straight and opening our coat to make myself larger is also dangerous, because either the kangaroos will be scared or it will think our act as an act of threatening them and start to attack us. So I think the best option when faced with wild animals, is to move slowly and carefully.

  12. The car fire case excites me as I was so excited to use my knowledge of knowing that sodas can extinguish fires. What I realize from this is that I have to options in which the first one is to back away or the second which is to pour soda. With my knowledge of knowing that carbon dioxide in the soda can extinguish fire, creates a temptation for me to do that. But in reality I know myself and that I would freak out as much as any other person would be and that would make me much more possible to move backwards and stay as far away as possible from the car. Because realistically, we won’t have a second chance to move away from the car and if we die, we die. So yeah, even though I would try to extinguish the fire, I would most probably leave the car alone.

    ReplyDelete
  13. From what I have seen, people are very afraid when they sees that they car is on fire, even if the fire is very small and can be easily extinguished with water. People would think that since their car carries a lot of fuel, it can explode in any moment while the truth is the fuel tank of their car is located on the back, far away from their engine. If my car ever catch on fire, hopefully not, I would open the hood and examine where does the fire come from and if it has any potential to be extinguished. If I have a soda in my compartment or if anyone is carrying a soda, I would take it and shake it as hard as I can, after a few seconds, I will open the bottle and spray it to the source of fire. While a lot of you may question, what is the function of a soda in this case? Soda contains carbon dioxide and thus, making it capable of being a emergency fire extinguisher. That is why I chose to open the hood and spray the fire with soda if my car ever catch fire.

    1. Black widow is a very widely known species of a arachnids, a family of an eight legged creature that we refer to as spider. This species is very well known for one thing, and that is because it is very venomous. Make no mistake, even though that black widow I very venomous, most of the male are usually harmless and are not venomous. You can identify male and female black widow by the hourglass like markings on their abdomen. This is why, if I ever encounter any black widow, first I would check for marking on their abdomen to determine whether they are dangerous or not. The male, which are usually not dangerous have brighter orange or red marking on their back, while females usually have darker marking. Even though that black widow is venomous, you shouldn’t be worried about it since there isn’t any black widow in Indonesia and other than that, no one in the United States has died from black widows in over ten years.

  14. Well for starters, I had similar nerve wracking experience in my high school's hiking club. Back when we were attending the 5 days inauguration ceremony held by the committee, we were forced to live in a pitiful state called "survival". The committee took all our supplies of food, and forced us to scour every inch of the forest to find something to eat. Well, it indirectly imply that we need to find bizarre food source to prolong our energy. Hence, the food source will include random berries, worms, and young bamboos (bamboo shoots). In addition, we were obligated to sleep inside an artificial tent made out of scraps of leave and wood taken from nearby trees. The worse part is the tents inability to shelter us from the rain. Whatever we did to strengthen the roof, the rain will always find a way to burst through it. It was one hellish experience.

  15. Talking about near death experience, I remember riding on an airplane a long time ago (couldn’t remember when it was exactly) to go to Semarang from Jakarta. I sat on the left side, on the back part of the plane, and in the middle seat between my mom and my sister. The flight to Semarang took about one hour. After flying for about 20 minutes, we started to smell something burning. If I would describe the smell, it would be like the smell of a burning tire. Everyone on the plane started to panic and started to ask the flight attendants of what was happening. Until one passenger, who was seating on the right side, saw a glint of fire on the wing and after that the inside of the plane started to get hot. After informing the flight attendant, almost immediately the pilot announced that the plane would go back to Soekarno-Hatta International Airport. During the 20 minutes back to Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, my family couldn’t stop praying. Thankfully, we made it back to the airport safe and sound. As soon as the plane land and park, we could see fire trucks and ambulances waiting outside. It was a traumatizing experience for my family, we couldn't ride on airplane for some time, and even my mom is still scared of flying up until now. One thing I was grateful about being on that plane was that my family was all there, and I wasn’t alone.

  16. Talking about near-death experience, I can’t exactly remember a lot. However, I remember vividly about one particular near-death experience that I had. It happened last year. My family went on a vacation to Banyuwangi, and we also went to Mount Ijen. We hiked in Mount Ijen, and went to see the Blue Fire, a natural phenomenon which would create blue flame on the surface of a crater. I was lacking in sleep and tired because of the hike. The track to the Blue Fire is quite extreme. The track was steep and really narrow, to the point that only one person could fit, and I was a bit left behind from my family and the guide we hired, because I was pushed back by some other tourists, and I had a hard time going down on the track because my shoes are really slippery. I was also feeling quite sick, I had a bad headache and a cold. To make things worse, we had to wear gas masks that were suffocating, because the smell of sulfur was unbearable. Breathing was extremely difficult, and even with the gas mask on, the sulfur still smelt really bad. The next thing I know, I slipped and almost fell. I was lucky a stranger held my arm. If I fell, I would’ve most likely died. I guess I’m just thankful I’m still here today.

  17. Luckily I have never experience any of these worst case scenarios that are given in the article. But I would like to answer these questions for preparations just in case it will happen to me. Hopefully not. For the first case, I would choose the option B, “Move away from the car and take cover”. The reason why I choose this option is because I have no information of the situation of the car. Possibly there’s already a fuel leak, and it can explode any time. So I wouldn’t risk myself by coming closer to the vehicle and not knowing when it will harm me, worst case scenario, I might die from it. For the second case, I would choose the option C, “Jump straight down into the Dumpster, keeping your body vertical and landing on your feet”. Though I do not agree with the idea of landing on my feet, I would still choose option C.

    1. Somehow every time I jump from a high altitude into something I would always fall on my back. But i have never fell from the fourth floor. The highest altitude I ever jumped from is from the top of my bunk bed, and it was also into a pile of pillows. With that height, I would not risk hurting my back, in it would be bad to hurt your back from a high fall. Worst case scenario, I would die from it. Therefore, I would choose falling on my feet than my back. Another reason to why I would choose option B is that I don't think that there is a possibility for me to do a three-quarter somersault during that fall. I might go further or not spinning at all, and it would be uncertain where i'm going to fall and on which part of my body I would fall on.

    2. Next, the black widow case. Well I couldn’t imagine winter in Indonesia and I would never ever approach a spider, especially a scary looking spider like that. But this case is interesting. I always try to avoid spiders, but the best way to avoid something is by studying it. And knowing the differences between a male and a female black widow is an important knowledge. Because the female black widow could threat my life, where as the male black widow wouldn’t. So for this case, I would choose the option B, “Check for red or orange hourglass-shaped markings on the spider’s abdomen”. On the underside of the female's abdomen, there is a red or orange hourglass-shaped markings. There I would be able to differentiate male and female black widow. Then another case, the mob of kangaroos. In this case the option that I would choose is C, “Back away slowly”.

    3. I have no idea what it means when they start thumping their feet, it could be that they feel threatened and they are warning their friends, or its a way they give a signal that they want to fight to the one approaching them or near them. So I wouldn’t want to come close to a creature that I have no knowledge of and have no chance to go up against. I would just zoom in with my camera to the frame that I want. I would never risk my life just for a picture. Last but not least, the sword fight case. In this case, I would choose the option A, “Move in close, keeping your sword above your head and parallel to the ground”. By moving in close, I would give less options for my opponent to attack. One of the fastest attack that they can do is an attack from above, thus I would put the sword above my head and parallel to the ground to block the attack.

  18. Regarding to the case of the car fire if I am in that situation I would probably move away from the car and take cover. I think that is the best choice to choose because I know little about car and the mechanical stuff so I should not endangered myself and take cover. If I opened the hood, it is possible that the fire will burst out and hit me because fire tend to burst more when in contact with more oxygen and check under the car for a fuel leak is also a danger thing to do because when a car is on fire and simultaneously the fuel is leaking then it is just a matter of second until the car is blown out. I have experienced a car issue like this but it is just my clutch that is burned out because I pushed my car too hard and it starts smell like a burning rubber but eventually I went to the mechanic and he told me it was fine.

  19. I personally never had any kind of near death experience before in my life, therefore i will only answer the questions given from the article. For the burning car scenario, the solution is actually depends on the person. If you are someone who easily get panic, don’t understand a thing about car machine, and tend to prioritize your life more than anything, then “move away from the car and take cover” will be the best and the most suitable answer for you. However if you are someone who tend to be cold minded, don’t easily get panic, and understand cars stuff, then the answer will be D or “pour soda on the flames”. Why? because i just found it from the internet that soda is able extinguish fire. Therefore it’ll be really helpful to minimize the spread of the fire, and after its been extinguish, you’ll be able to open the hood of the car to fix the main problem.

  20. In the case of “Dumpster Dive” which I hope wouldn’t ever happen to me at some point in the future, Based on my knowledge it would be best if you jump out of the window and land on your back. I think leaping as far away from the buildings is the worst option to choose as you might risk landing on an unknown hard surface. I also don’t think that landing on your feet would be a wise option as the small surface of your feet would create a huge impact from falling centralized on your feet, you might also trip when you are landing and accidentally hit your head into the hard surface. And hanging with your finger to the ledge is also highly unlikely as I don’t think that your finger is able to support your whole body from falling. You also risk landing on your feet if you happen to fall and assuming that if you managed to hold onto it for the duration it will be really hard for you to get back up. So based on my knowledge which I hoped to be true, your best option was landing on your back as the impact from falling would be distributed to a broader surface. Thus, it would be the most likely option.

  21. Every case that are stated above is a case that i have never experience before and it is something that i am very thankful of. Therefore, i choose the car fire case as the case that i will choose. I admit that I am the guy who is not really fond with car problems that is why when there is anything wrong with my car i have always contact my personal driver or friend who knows more about cars than i do. In this case i will probably take another option but also something that is related to the option. I would the choose option A is my choice but adding a little bit something more. I would choose to check what is wrong with the car and evaluate what are the symptoms. After knowing the things that are happening to my car i would straightly call my driver to come pick me up or even ask if there anything i could do to make things better..
