If you don ’t like what ’s happening in your real life or would like to add the excitement of a double life, not to worry. You can do so easily in the comfort of your home in one of the growing number of virtual worlds, where you can choose an avatar to represent you and create a new life the way you’d like your life to be within of the structure of that virtual world.
For example, you can become a farmer in FarmVille, a chef in Café World, a crime boss in Mafi a Wars, the owner of an aquarium breeding and selling fish in Fish World, a Texas hold ’em player in Zynga Poker, a treasure hunter on Treasure Island, a pet owner in Pet Society, a cool individual hanging out with cool friends in YoVille, and more. These games are all available through Facebook courtesy of Zynga, a very popular social game company, but there are many others, including RollerCoaster Tycoon from RollerCoasterWorld.com and Second Life, one of the original social games developed in 1999 by Philip Rosedale of Linden Lab.
Such social games, which recreate some aspect of everyday—and not so everyday—life have become extremely popular. According to a 2009 article in Time,FarmVille has over 65 million monthly players and has more than 86 million fans, about 25 million of them on Facebook alone. The way FarmVille works is that you become part of a town where you can grow crops, have friends help you do your chores, sell your goods for farm cash, and buy virtual goods. It ’s free to join and to play you just have to install the software. For instance, soon after I signed up, I got a notice to “Submit a picture of your Farm for a chance to be our featured Farm of the Week! Our winning Farms will be displayed on the Offi cial FarmVille Fan Page and our winners will receive 100 Farm Cash. Do you have what it takes to create the next Farm of the Week?” Once I signed in, I had opportunities to get fuel, arborists, crop timers, and other aids to help me produce a successful harvest, all while listening to some hokey guitar music. The two ways to get ahead in the game is to plow, plant, and harvest something, and as you gain more points, you can plant additional crops. At the same time, you can ask friends to become your neighbors, and exchange gifts with them using virtual cash to buy your gift. Then with their help, you can do even more harvesting, make more money, and increase the size of your farm. But your participation doesn’t end there. Once you download the FarmVille play bar, as I did, you have a menu bar inviting you to play still other Zynga games, like Mafi a Wars and Vampire Wars, and have an opportunity to add neighbors (by inviting others like adding friends on Facebook), buy tools, and participate in other activities. In turn, Zynga makes its money through ads, virtual goods, and product offers, such as a subscription to Netfl ix, which will give you points you can use in the game. Other social game companies similarly have their own programs and offers for making money.

The money-making aspects of the business aside, this trend to creating communities around social games is intriguing, because it reflects a trend to expanding relationships through the Internet. On the one hand, these online relationships can supplement the relationships a person already has in the real world, and often people create in-person counterparts to virtual worlds, such as forming a local group of FarmVille or Mafia War fans, much like gamers have for competitive games like Dungeons and Dragons. But, on the other hand, for some people, these virtual relationships replace real-world relationships. This can be healthy for some people, such as byhelping someone who is lonely fi nd online friends. Yet, for others, this focus on online relations can lead to growing isolation and disrupt realworld relationships, such as when a husband or wife becomes an Internet addict due to this game play and has little or no time for a partner.
Another downside is the growing cost of acquiring items to be a more powerful player in these games. For some people, purchasing virtual goods or services is like a hobby, much like spending a few bucks for a fun night at casinos in Reno or Vegas. So if you lose, it doesn ’t much matter. The money pays for a night or weekend on the town. But for other players, as the cost of being successful in the game goes up, this cost could result in serious inroads into one ’s budget.

Still, apart from these possible downsides, there is no denying the growing popularity of all sorts of games, as people spend more time online and develop more friendships. In turn, this popularity offers all kinds of opportunities for established social game companies and newbies with a creative idea. Just think of any area of life that doesn ’t already have a game—or where you might create an even better one—and you are on your way. For example, some possibilities, if not already invented might be . . . World Traveler, an Amazing Race type of travel game in which you visit destinations all over the world and rack up travel points for getting there in record time; Airplane, in which you run an airplane company and gain points for getting the most passengers to different destinations; Tour Guide, in which you lead others to exotic locations; CEO, in which you run a company and seek to make the most money with new products and services; Smart Shopper, in which you are a consumer who is trying to get the best bargains; and Stock Broker, in which you seek the most commissions by buying and trading stocks for your clients and yourself.
In short, just about anything you think of could be the basis for creating a social game and community. Maybe there might even be interest in The Very Next New Thing game in which you try to come up with unique new products and services, get them funded, get as much money as you can by selling them, and eventually sell the companies for millions so you can create still another company around another next new thing.

This blog post brings about the prospect of how the virtual world will change in the future. In my opinion, I think the virtual world will become its own alternate reality. It will closely resemble the OASIS from the movie Ready Player One or read the book of the same name; it is an interconnected world-wide network of virtual reality that makes up its own other universe. People would put on VR goggles and be transported to a digital universe where they will be able to interact with other people as their own avatars, and do whatever they want with virtually no limit. The downside of this is that people will be disconnected with the real world; not needing to log out except to eat, sleep, or use the bathroom. In the movie, and the book, it is explained that people use this technology so much because it’s an escape from the real world which constantly fall apart; with social and environmental issues rising up, people look to this virtual world to get away from the hardships of life. Eventually though, there would be some sort of regulations regarding the use of something like this, as people need to disconnect for a while and enjoy the real world; as a quote from Groucho Marx says, “I'm not crazy about reality, but it's still the only place to get a decent meal.”
ReplyDeleteAlthough I see virtual reality as an entertainment and hobby I can see how other people can use it as a form of escapism, maybe they didn't like how their life is going, made a few bad but ultimately irreversible decisions that made their life unbearable, for example, and they feel as though it is not worth waking up in the morning just to live their miserable life an so they seek an escape, something to distract themselves long enough so that they can hopefully forget all the anxiety and depression. People from the early 80s to the 90s were visualizing a world filled with virtual reality long before it was thought possible. I often associate virtual reality to movies like 'The Matrix', in there the world is basically built to cater around the individual, each person gets to live their own little version of paradise whilst on the surface the actual world is going to hell.
ReplyDeleteThe virtual reality and the new technologies have completely revolutionized the way we interact with our surroundings and environment, it has enhanced our life in general but also have many downsides. Those new technologies have enabled us to play games that people could only dreamed of, but also create a society that need constant entertainment, recent studies have shown how difficult young people deal with boredom for example, and boredom is actually a normal state of mind and can even be healthy for our brain as it can rest for a while and enhance our memory and can make us more focus as well.
ReplyDeleteVirtual reality is an incredible invention, but it should be use with care, some people even get addicted to it, there is several cases in japan with people who have not left their bedroom for months or sometimes even for years as they prefer their digital life rather than the real life.
Social games like Pet Society, Cafe World, YoVille, etc., used to be very popular around 2009, I was still a student in primary school by that time. I admit that I spent a lot of time playing those games in Facebook, not just me though, a lot of my friends from school and neighbours play those games as well. It was so popular that nearly all of my Facebook friends take part in playing those games. It is fun when you show off your levels and how far you managed to go in the game, such as having a cool house for your pet in Pet Society or the neat-design of your cafe in Cafe World. Playing social games didn’t stop me to socialize with real friends as all my neighbours in those games are all my real life friends, I’m not the type of person who likes to befriend others through the internet. Overtime, the popularity of social games in Facebook diminished, and nearly all of my friends stopped playing those games, so I eventually stopped playing those games too.
ReplyDeleteI think that the virtual world is progressing very quickly. Every moth there will lots of new games being released. There are limitless number of game companies who compete with each other in producing a better game. This causes the non stop release of new games in a short period of time. I think that as the article stated people are becoming intriqued by these game especially social games such as pet society, farmfille, Cafe world and many more. If iam not mistaken these games are mostly available in Facebook. I used to play these kind of games too back in elementary school. It was so famous back in the day and almost all my friends played it too. I even have some friends who i consider to be adults who still play these kind of games. This proves that these kinds of social games can be very addicting. It also keeps expanding as there are gifts we can get by inviting other people to play the game.

I admit that these games were very fun and addicting but after sometime i got bored of playing these kind of games. I prefer playing FPS such as counterstrike and Moba games like LOL. It was fun at the beginning as you keep on getting rewards. These reward can be in a form of virtual money if you exchange gift with your friends. It is very addicting as i thought of the game as a competition. I kept on competing with my friends on who will get the highest level in the shortest amount of time. DeleteVirtual reality is currently one of the best if not the best invention there is, nowadays big companies especially video games companies are competing to release their latest and greatest, however those who are making virtual reality simulation seems to succeed better than the other competitors. Personally, I love virtual reality, I think it's such a revolutionary innovation and it is something for us as humans to be proud of. Virtual reality is a great innovation, however there are some downsides which some of us might have experienced. The most common problem with virtual reality is that, we become less interactive with our surrounding; what I mean by that is we tend to spend more time on a virtual reality than our actual lives. Essentially, we are becoming more and more anti-social, also spending more time on virtual reality is not healthy for us.

People have fun in a different way; there are some people who prefer playing games rather than spending time in a crowded public space. Virtual world serves them with the kind of leisure they are demanded on. This kind of technology benefits both stakeholders: game companies and gamers. Game companies pour their idea, interpreting reality into a system of fantasy, and resulted in a social game as existed right now. They are basically just following where the market goes. On the other hand, gamers earn the advantage in a form of entertainment. It is necessary to manage time and concern about health because spending much time on screen makes them prone to radiation. As long as gamers are rational enough to make a proportional allocation for pastime and working. It has advantages and disadvantages depends on the perspective we look it up from. The technology generates changes that we are not used to going through before, but like it or not, it is the future that we are going to face.
ReplyDeleteTalking about virtual world it is closely related with online world, where people can express themselves the way that they could not in the real offline world. Most of the people might like it more to interact in the virtual wold because they do not need to interact directly , meaning face to face interaction. Due to the fact that they do not interact face to face they tends to be more as an extrovert no matter if they actually introvert in the real world. The people who is less interactive in the real world become so expressive in the virtual world. Hence, the emergence of virtual world helps us to build a larger area of network where we can make more friends from around the world but not necessarily we’ve met them in the real world beforehand. Actually me myself back in my junior high school years caught up in this virtual world and became less sensitive to my surrounding, for example my family, friends because I enjoyed it more to have friends in the virtual world. So this virtual world have two sides the positive and negative impact as I mentioned above.

The anime is about people playing virtual reality game, things get messed up they are trapped inside the game, and the only way they can get out is to finish the game. Although, those kind of thing will not probably happen in real life. People could get addicted to virtual world and choose to trap themselves in the virtual world. Nowadays, a lot of people are addicted in playing game and spend hours to enjoy their game. I could not even imagine if virtual world is created. We probably can even distinguish between virtual and reality anymore, since reality is of course bitter and virtual always sweet. This make me remember a scene from the movie titled inception, where there are people that are dreaming for so long to escape their reality. However, this development could be good and can be used for medical advancement. It could be used for those people who have mental disability.

I think it is because there are some increasement in technology which can utilize virtual reality gadget, you can use or play virtual reality games just from your smartphone or if you want to be more realistic you can use gadget such as HTC Vive VR headset or Oculus Rift for example, but of course to power these tools you got to have a powerful pc to be able to play the games smoothly as they said quality comes at a cost. About the virtual reality itself or we can say virtual world, I think virtual reality will be implemented in all of our daily life sooner or later, I’m not talking the virtual reality world like in the Ready Player One movie what I mean is a possible combination of the real world and the virtual world. An example of tools that uses this kind of technology is I think Microsoft Hololens and the Google glasses.

This advancement in technology surely influences the dynamics in human life, from how we interact with one another, how we experience the world, how we order food and other things that were considered unthinkable in the past. This vast advancement in technology may also be considered as a negative thing if humans are not aware of the implication of overusing technology. I think The Virtual World as described in the passage is indeed an advanced and creative idea. If made possible, it will definitely change the way human experience the world. This however may come with negative consequences. Living in the virtual world may have psychological impact to human and create confusion. Aside from that, living in the virtual world may lead human to be ignorant about what is going on in the real world. I think that there are many consideration that needs to be taken into account if this Virtual World is planned to be created.
ReplyDeleteThe social games mentioned, which were FarmVille, Café World, Mafia Wars, Fish World, Treasure Island, Pet Society and YoVille, were social games on the social media platform Facebook. These games were around during the times Facebook was staring to gain huge traction and was about to snowball into mainstream. Admittedly, I played all those games mentioned when I was still in elementary. And sure enough, so did everyone who had Facebook.

I still remember to this day about an uncle my mother told me who sank a lot of time and actual money into Farmville to design his dream ranch of sorts. Even as a child I found that idea a bit off and thought that is was not something an adult would do, but I suppose my assumptions were wrong.
Creating your own reality isn't really an issue in itself, its more so the path taken to reach that realization which will be.
We sometimes wish that we could escape this reality and be someone else that has a different life than this one. Many games mentioned in the article actually made part of it happen. There are also many other games that can give the player a new persona to play in the gaming world. This can be one of the reasons why many game players got addicted to the games they’re playing. Now, we could imagine what it would be like when the world is replaced with the virtual one. Steven Spielberg actually produced and directed a live action/animated sci-fi adventure film titled “Ready Player One” which was released on March 29, 2018. The film takes place in 2045, when most people in the world use the virtual reality software OASIS to escape the desolation of the real world. The events in the movie could actually happen since there are a lot of new innovations for virtual reality games now.
ReplyDeleteTalking about virtual reality reminded me of an anime series called Sword Art Online. Sword Art Online is a virtual reality based game that uses a helmet-like tool called Nerve Gear to play it. SAO was developed by a man named Akihito Kayaba. Initially SAO was an ordinary reality virtual game but later this game kept a dark side. Virtual Reality is an extraordinary innovation in the online world. Even in one scene in SAO, Virtual Reality was developed into an Augmented Reality that was able to help AIDS patients to do therapy. But back again about how virtual reality is used, because VR will relate to what is called a nerve and brain, so that it will be very dangerous when playing with these things. But believe me if someday a VR will be found like SAO, the real world is the most comfortable place and don't use the virtual world to escape reality.
ReplyDeleteThe Facebook games that were mentioned really brings back memories. I used to play these games when I was still in elementary school. This game was so addicting and fun. I agree with the article which stated that the downside of virtual reality is that players can use real money to be better or have more power. These type of thing is usually called Pay to win and it is really annoying because some people do not work hard to get their item. The good thing about virtual reality is that as the article said, we can have more friends. Especially in a role-playing games, friends can be found easily online. Virtual reality is a good way to entertain ourselves when real life is giving us a burden. Through virtual reality, we can forget all those burdens and enjoy our virtual life more. However, being too much in a virtual world can make us forget about the real world which is very bad.
ReplyDeleteAs what Raja have said in his comment, this article also reminds of SAO which stands for Sword Art Online. It’s an anime where a game called Sword Art Online had just been released and to play, players use a special helmet called the Nerve Gear to transfer their consciousness into a virtual world where they play as a character in an VRMMORPG which stands for Virtual Reality Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game. If that kind of technology were to be real, it would be very revolutionary because a lot of people would of course want to do things they can’t do in the real world such as fly or die. This anime is apparently also similar to the movie called Ready Player One. The difference is that in the movie, players are still conscious in the real world while simultaneously move in the virtual world while SAO requires the players to be completely unconscious both physical and mentally in the real world.
ReplyDeleteThe virtual world, a world where you can express your-self freely, a world that you actually can control and adjust according to your preference, a world where most of the people feel much more comfort. But is that so? According to most research, the reason why people having a suicide, one of them is because they’re bullied through the social media. And also we can adjust our reality so it can suit your personal preference. There are a lot of books that discussing that so you may read one and feel the enlightenment. Okay so back to our main consideration, is a virtual world bad? No. But we need to make sure that we are “living” it properly and wisely because everything that happened to you is basically a reaction for what you have done, so if you have a bad experience, you might do something unpleasant. And please if there is a world like Sword Art Online, Ready Player One or something, please be wise and stay safe.
ReplyDeleteI think that playing virtual world games is a good idea to kill time and get rid of boredom, but it can also be bad if someone’s being too addicted with it. I do play some of ‘virtual world’ games nowadays, such as Hogwarts’ mystery and The Sims 4. I also used to play a lot of that kind of games in facebook or PC, like Need For Speed, ‘Pet Society’, which I think was the most popular facebook game at 2008-2010ish, FarmVille, Criminal Case, and many more. Also the legendary PlayStation or Nintendo DS game, Harvest Moon, Mario Bross and Cooking Mama. Nowadays, games do have a really nice graphic and storyline or plot which draw people’s attention and make a lot of people willing to spend a lot of time and money for that game. Some games even have a very good music soundtracks. Playing games does really entertaining.
ReplyDeleteIt is also somehow stimulate your creativity. But there’s this famous chinese saying “wu ji bi fan” (from the movie karate kid, 2010) that means “too much everything is not good”. Playing game too much indeed is not good since it will make you neglect your responsibilities and forgot to actually having a social interaction with people in the real world. Some game-addicts are actually getting mental health problem because they always spend their time playing games and missing out all the social interactions human actually need. Maybe some of us have ever heard stories about young couples who broke up because one of them is addicted to games and chose to prioritize their game over their partner. I believe that maybe some of us has experienced it before (I haven’t and I hope I won’t experienced that kind of break up). Well, I know it sounds ridiculous, but it does happening nowadays.
DeleteVirtual world these days is getting more popular. This happens because in virtual world all people could be whatever they wanted to be. They are free to express themselves, expressing their ideas and also, expressing their dreams. Virtual world allows you to be whatever you want, without anyone talking bad about it. Virtual world that I often use is online games. Online games can connect you to another part of the world, and meeting new people online. In my opinion this is the ‘good’ side of virtual world as we can communicate with stranger and it could make us be socially skilled as interacting with stranger could train your confidence to speak. The bad side of this virtual world is getting addicted to this virtual and unreal world, and forgetting our actual real world life. Often some people only care about their virtual world life rather than taking care of themselves in real life. For example, role-playing activities in some social medias which in my opinion has gone too far, as some role-players spent too much time on their ‘unreal’ life, and didn’t care about their real life.
ReplyDeleteAfter reading the post above, I realized that virtual reality or VR to be short is an advanced gaming technology. As a person who enjoys playing games a lot, I think that virtual reality is a dream come true. Honestly, I always wanted to know what it’s like to be inside of a video game. The game companies really has step up their game by making their game, which is a fantasy, become a reality. Imagine how amazing it is to be inside of a whole different world than earth, which is the current world we live in. Virtual reality makes gaming a whole new experience and can be an escape from the real world. Many people have problems in the world and it would be nice if they could experience another world that is nothing like their current one. With this advanced technology, people can forget their problem in the real world for a while and have fun in another world. Like all things, virtual reality also have its negative outcome. My number one concern is that the people who go to the virtual world is addicted to it. My fear is that they would like to live in the virtual world more than the real world because of their life is better in the virtual world than in reality. People would suffer from depression because of the fact that they can’t live in the fantasy that they always wondered; the virtual world. I believe that virtual reality would be amazing if gamers can control their time and realize that it is only a game not an actual reality.
ReplyDeleteThis article made me aware more about the advancement of technology until today, Games creator are getting more and more creative, Game’s nowadays has improved so well, comparing it back to when I was just 10 years old, games were only in a form of arcade. However, nowadays game has been trying so hard to copy every inch of details in real life, so that people can feel the experience almost like day to day, so the more realistic the game was, the more attention it gets. I believed, Virtual games are more than that has been mention above in the article, there are so many games that took a Virtual games concept. Even the majority of the newest release games are a Virtual Games, it offers people to have the experience as another character, in which it opens up many possibilities for the player to explore the world, without limitation.

On the other hand, having an open virtual world, living freely without limitation, can be very persuasive for we as a human, who doesn’t want to live without any barriers right? living the most out of every people’s creativity. It opens up a whole lot of possibility for human to be continuously trapped in the game world, making them completely forget towards their real life. This evil depiction, can be seen in the new movie that was out early this year, by the name of “Ready Player One” by this film we can see so many people being attracted to much to the Virtual Reality Games.
DeleteIn Conclusion, people might be facing many form of stressed in their life, but I still don’t see games as an alternative to escape out of their problems, rather games should be just as a normal entertainment so that people can be refreshed out of their stress. Like what most people has commonly says, something that has been too much can be very toxic to your real life. Today we only have a helmet or goggles to have 360 experience, but tomorrow or maybe another 10 years forward, any possibilities could happen, maybe it’s possible for human to sleep and play the games in their unconscious condition (dreaming) just like the film of Black Mirror with a title called “Playtest” This episode really spooky yet can be very realistic. The human is being tested on a new type of game where he plays a horror games inside his unconscious state, while being control by a Gaming firms.
DeleteFor those of you who have watched Ready Player One movies, you may have wondered whether the VR (virtual reality) technology can be that sophisticated in the future? In the film, all real-world activities can be done through VR devices. One thing that is sure to grow rapidly with VR is the world of video games. Currently, there are PlayStation VR, HTC Vive and Oculus Rift as devices that support gamers' satisfaction in the VR world. Even so it's just visual satisfaction. It could be in the future, not only the eyes that feel VR, but also can involve kinetic movements, namely the hands and feet. So far, the technology is still being developed. Imagine if you can play shooter games with VR devices that also involve gestures. It would be really fun. Maybe you already know that there is a map application, like Google Maps that allows you to see interesting places around the world with the street view feature. In addition to exploring interesting places on earth, VR also allows you to explore places that are difficult to touch, such as in the ocean or space. Imagine how beautiful nature is from behind your VR device.

In Wikipedia, the definition of augmented reality (AR) in Indonesian is an augmented reality, a technology that combines two-dimensional and or three-dimensional virtual objects into a real three-dimensional environment and projects virtual objects in real time. Virtual objects function to display information that is not acceptable to humans. This makes added reality useful as a tool to help users' perceptions and interactions with the real world. Information displayed by virtual objects helps users carry out activities in the real world. The meaning of my discussion is that the extend and range of augmented and virtual reality is only limited by the creativity of your own mind.

Being partially virtual and real, the new Augmented Reality interface technology that is able to display relevant information is very helpful in education, training, repair or maintenance, manufacturing, military, games and entertainment. Augmented Reality has many advantages over Virtual Reality because users can see and touch digital objects and can interact with digital elements. The emergence of virtual objects can be anywhere and anytime. Both of these technologies require a combination of hardware and software to function. What makes AR and VR so loved by many big companies? According to Brian Blau, senior researcher at Gartner, a technology research company based in Connecticut, the goal of developing the reality of the two technologies is nothing but a big advantage. Initially, he said, increased reality and virtual reality did provide new experiences in playing games, taking pictures, and making videos. "But, finally, both AR and VR will be the most effective way to get digital advertisements and the opening of new virtual stores," he was quoted as saying on the Wired page. My prediction is that in the future, VR & AR could be economically profitable as it would be a need that must be obtained by most of the population, and hey, who are we to argue to Steven Spielberg? First, they are very entertaining and allow you to create the perfect life you want for your avatar. You can exchange gifts with your real-life friends that also play the same game and also meet new people. Then, they can become a way to escape you real life for a moment and create an easy life you like. However, in some situations I think that these games can become dangerous. People can begin to spend more and more time playing and forget about their real life; they could also prefer the life they are living online and find their real life boring. Therefore, I think that virtual reality games should be played carefully. People should limit their time in their virtual life to a reasonable amount and don’t close themselves to the real world.
