The picturesque Indrayanti Beach in Gunungkidul, Yogyakarta. |
Until several years ago when talking about Gunungkidul regency, Yogyakarta, most people would probably have thought of a barren, dry and economically poor region suffering from recurrent clean water scarcity.
This is no longer the case. Gunungkidul is currently a popular tourist destination offering mostly natural beauty. It is also rich in Javanese culture where traditional performances and rituals are still well preserved.
Clean water supply is also no longer an issue as new resources have been developed to answer the problem.
The natural beauty on offer ranges from exotic beaches, rare views of a karst mountain range, a prehistoric river and mountains, geoparks, challenging caves to explore, rocky routes to adventure and attractive spots to take pictures in.
Even the meandering, up and down, roads in the hilly area heading to the tourist sites are no less interesting. During the rainy season they offer beautiful green views of mostly teakwood forests. During the dry season they offer exotic views of grayish, almost leafless teakwood trees along both sides of the roads.
In some sections, like the one on the route that connects Gunungkidul regency's Panggang district and Bantul regency's Imogiri, travelers are spoiled with the view of karst cliffs on one side and the distant view of the blue Indian Ocean on the other.
Economic observer Cyrillus Harinowo Hadiwerdoyo once called this particular section the Monterrey of Gunungkidul, because he sees it as similar to the road section called Seventeen Mile Drive in Monterrey, California, in the United States, known for its beautiful meandering route that follows the contours of its mountain range area.
“Gunungkidul is extraordinary,” Harinowo said during his visit to the regency recently.
He said that Gunungkidul as he saw it had been transforming itself from previously one of the poorest regions in the country into a favorite tourist destination.
“And this is just a beginning,” said Harinowo, expressing confidence that within the next five to 10 years Gunungkidul will really transform into a New Bali.
Providing an example, he said that the elite Nusa Dua tourist area in Bali was previously also a barren hilly area. Thus, it is quite possible that the hilly karst area of Gunungkidul will also be transformed into an elite tourist destination in the near future.
The current development of Java Island’s Southern Route (JLS) that also directly connects Gunungkidul’s coastal area with the New Yogyakarta International Airport (NYIA), planned to start operation next year, will further speed up the transformation process.
He said it was this confidence that moved him to jointly invest in the tourism sector in Gunungkidul by developing the Radika Paradise Hotel at Indrayanti Beach with a local investor, offering cottages and villas for overnight stays.
“The response has been beyond our expectations,” he said, describing how foreign and domestic tourists had started staying in his hotel even though some facilities of the hotel are still under construction.
Gunungkidul Tourism Agency's planning sub-division head Supriyanta concurred, saying that the regency had for the last few years been enjoying a steady increase in tourist visits by up to 400,000 a year. Last year it had 3.2 million tourists visiting, of whom 21,600 were foreign tourists.
He said the majority of tourists visiting Gunungkidul so far chose the beaches as their main destinations. Among the most popular beaches are Baron, Kukup, Sepanjang, Drini, Krakal, Sadranan, Ngandong, Sundak, Indrayanti, Nglambor, Siung and Wediombo. Each offers distinct charms and characters.
“We have a target of promoting four new beaches a year,” said Supriyanta, adding that of the regency’s 121 registered beaches, only 40 had been developed and exploited as tourist destinations.
To help attract more tourists, the regency administration is currently building a central parking lot on 3 hectares in Krakal where visitors are expected to park their vehicles and continue their trip to the beaches in shuttle buses provided by the authority.
The facility will also come with other public facilities, including kiosks for souvenirs and culinary outlets. “We expect to have the development of these facilities completed by the end of this year so that by next year they will be ready for operation,” Supriyanta said.

Yogyakarta is a beautiful and special city. A lot of people come to Jogja because it is a very nice city for holiday. You will experience the city, and yet could also experience the nature. I also agree that Gunungkidul is expected to become the new Bali. I believe this will happen because I always amazed by Gunung kidul’s beautiful nature. It has the clear water, white sands, beautiful waves, and amazing vibes. In my opinion, Gunung kidul is as good as Bali, and has the chance to reach Bali’s level. In order for Gunung kidul to be as big as Bali, needs the role of government and the citizens. When the government and the citizen work hand on hand to build Gunung kidul to be a big holiday and tourism region. This is important because we know that Gunung kidul has the assets to be a big tourism spots, as long as it it maximized. When Gunungkidul become a big tourism spots, it will bring Yogyakarta and Indonesia many benefits, so that it should be concerned and well planned.
ReplyDeleteYogyakarta offers many beautiful and interesting destination, one of the destination is Gunung kidul, located on the southest part of the special region of Yogyakarta (coastal area) Gunung kidul offers many beautiful beaches. You can take one day trip from Yogyakarta to Gunung kidul, or stay one night. If you want to take one day trip you have to go from Yogyakarta 5 a.m in the morning because it quite far from the city 70 km, and approximately 2.5 hours by car. Gunung Kidul has several natural tourist attractions, such as Timang beach where you can enjoy the gondola in the beach, Ngerenehan beach where its surrounded by steep cliffs, and the ocean also calm on that beach, and Sadranan beach the beach is clean and you can find many stall where you can buy coconut and instant noodle. Now the local government in Yogyakarta is making efforts to promote and develop the districts tourism in Gunung kidul.
ReplyDeleteI've read an article about the new program of the Ministry of Tourism of the Republic of Indonesia where they were planning to build "The 10 new Bali". It consist of 10 new tourist destinations that were focused on development. This program is caused by the high attention on Bali but not having attention to other tourist destination in Indonesia which actually are a very potential place for tourism. Nowadays, foreigners only know Bali as the main destination of Indonesia and sometimes mistaken Indonesia is in Bali and not the opposite. This program is also caused by the big potential of tourism in Indonesia but is not well organized and tends to be organized by foreigners who are more brave to invest in building tourism in Indonesia but not the locals. This can also help to increase the nations foreign exchange. What i think about tourism in Indonesia is that locals need to be more brave by investing in different parts of tourism in Indonesia.
ReplyDeleteI have not visited Gunung Kidul but from what I have heard, beaches in Gunung Kidul regency are much more beautiful than Parangtritis beach. Gunung Kidul regency is also the poorer region of Yogyakarta, so if the government want to develop tourism industry in Gunung Kidul, it will boosts the economy for the people living in Gunung Kidul.
ReplyDeleteBy building good road infrastructure in Gunung Kidul and promoting it as a future tourist destination, I believe that Gunung Kidul can be as beautiful as Nusa Dua or even the Malibu, California.
The New Yogyakarta International Airport in Kulon Progo regency could also help greatly in the tourism development in Yogyakarta. The Adisutjipto International Airport is not sufficient enough to be an international airport hub. It takes a really long time to land in Yogyakarta. I have experienced it myself. Usually it takes around 30 minutes to have landing permission because the airport runway is busy. But, it will take a long time for the new airport to operate because of delayed land acquisition for the airport. The new airport is expected to be operational in 2021. Before that, we just have to stick with Adisutjipto airport and its busyness.
Gunungkidul is a very popular destination for both local and foreign tourists to visit in Yogyakarta. This place is very famous because of its beauty. One famous beach in there called ‘Pantai Indrayanti’. The beach is very beautiful. It has white sands, good scenery, clear water. It is perfect for vacation. I have been there 3 times, with family, and also sometimes with friends. The idea that stated Yogyakarta’s Gunungkidul is expected to become new Bali is actually possible, because the beauty is undoubted. However, looking from different viewpoint, I think that this place is different from Bali, from the location, the culture, etc. When people say that Gunungkidul will become Bali someday, I believe that there will be a lot of controversy from the citizens, as we know in Bali, people like to party a lot, and use simple clothing (such as bikini, tank top) which is different from this city’s culture, moreover, Jogja itself is very famous with its tradional culture.
ReplyDeleteYogyakarta is known by its exotic tourism destinations with the addition of its cultural wealth.
ReplyDeleteOne of the most famous and interesting destination is Gunungkidul regency which is located in the southern part of Yogyakarta. Currently, Gunungkidul has become the most favorable place to be visited by tourist. The place offered such natural beauty, it includes beautiful beaches, mountain views and parks. From the article, it is also stated that the regency build a parking lot in Krakal for the visitors’ vehicles. In my opinion, the regency administrator should also build some facilities for accommodation purposes. This allowed the visitors to be able to stay within the area and provide more convenient for the visitors. In addition, the regency administrator also need to protect the place from any destructive actions. As there will be more tourists who visit Gunungkidul regency, there will be higher chance of human intervention that may result to natural damage.
Gunungkidul is currently a famous tourist destination offering mostly natural beauty. It is also abundant in Javanese culture where traditional performances and rituals are still well maintained. This Indonesian destination is expected to become the new Bali. Located in the southeast part of Yogyakarta on the island of Java, the Gunungkidul Regency is approximately 2 hours drive from the city. Its southern coast has several beautiful white-sand beaches such as Pok Tunggal, Ngreneha , Baron, Kukup, Krakal, Drini, Nglambor, Jogan, Sundak, Siung Beach, Wediombo, and Sadeng. The most notable being Baron beach. Meanwhile, Gunungkidul Tourism Agency planning sub-division head Supriyanta revealed the regency had enjoyed a constant increase in tourist numbers by up to 400,000 per year for the last few years. Research shown that last year, 3.2 million tourists had visited Gunungkidul. Also 21,600 were foreign tourists. I did visited two beaches in Gunung Kidul, its stunning but i think investors should build a villa or something.
ReplyDeleteIn one of the main media in Jakarta in mid-March 2018, it was reported that further development plans for Gunung Kidul were started from the arrangement of the Baron Beach and Krakal Beach, followed by other beaches. The Gunung Kidul regency government seems more confident that their area is a gemstone waiting for rubbing experts. One of the indicators is the regional tourism fees in 2017 which reached almost Rp. 30 billion. The levy becomes very valid tourist statistical data and becomes a source of further development of their tourist destinations. From the levy, the main road to Goa Pindul, for example, is able to be repaired and widened. With these funds the local government also maintains and repairs the road that connects the city of Yogyakarta with the beaches in Gunung Kidul so that it is always comfortable. Those are the facts surrounding the news regarding Gunung Kidul as a new resort hotspot or landmark.
ReplyDeleteOn the other hand, the Yogyakarta Provincial Government is also increasingly involved in developing the tourism potential of Gunung Kidul. Funds from the province, for example, are used for land acquisition for the development of new access to Gunung Kidul, namely the southern crossing road (JJLS) which is currently completed. After the land acquisition is completed, the central government intervenes by allocating funds for the construction of the JJLS. Until now, the development of the infrastructure has been felt by tourists.
DeleteThe following transformations are the rampant construction of hotels, resorts and other lodging in the area. Starting from a modest inn, nowadays development has taken place for resort-class hotels which are getting more and more. Gunung Kidul then turns into a gemstone and the dream of the regional government is getting closer to reality.
Economic development in Gunungkidul began to gain new momentum with the movement of the region's tourism industry. In the CSR report of PT Bank Central Asia Tbk (BCA), one of the companies actively contributing to developing tourism in this area, it was noted that in 2011 the number of tourists to Gunungkidul only reached 500,000 people per year calculated from those who paid levies. Although there are already Dewabejo operators, the area is still unknown to many people. In fact, the area has a potential tourist attraction called Goa Pindul.
DeleteThe fundamental thing that underlines the transformation of the region towards the tourist destination is to train and form resources that can take part in managing, caring for, promoting Goa Pindul to become a tourist destination. The trainings are given primarily targeting managerial skills and abilities, such as serving guests (service excellence) and conducting comparative studies to other tourist villages.
That was my commentary evaluation on how Yogyakarta (Gunung Kidul to be excat) will change on the coming days, based on research and data of course.
A lot of assumption that Gunungkidul (Yogyakarta) will be like Bali in the future. I believe this expectation is all base on the beaches that every people in Indonesia will say that beautiful beach means that area will be like in the future. Personally, I see Gunungkidul and its destination in a different point of view. Although its tourist destination there have help the local people to have a better economy, people from Jogjakarta have different characteristic rather than people in Bali. Why? It is because of the culture in Jogjakarta that is really strong which makes it difficult for Jogjakarta to be able to be like Bali, the fact that Bali is a free palace where something taboo is not a big deal. On the other hand, if we see from a different point of view like the amazing beach that Gunungkidul have, of course one day it can be as popular like Bali. So remember, Bali and Jogjakarta are different.
ReplyDeleteGunungkidul is one of tourist’s favourite destinations in Yogyakarta. It is located approximately two hours away from the centre of the city but the breathtaking view it offers is worth the ride. Many people are expecting Yogyakarta’s Gunungkidul to become the new Bali. This might be because the beautiful beaches attract many tourists both locally and internationally. There are also a few resemblances between the beaches in Gunungkidul and Bali such as the white sand, clear water, and beautiful scenery. The difference is that Gunungkidul is not as crowded as Bali so visitors could enjoy a more peaceful time at the beach. In addition, Bali and Yogyakarta have different culture therefore tourists might be fascinated to explore the different culture in Yogyakarta. If we look at it from the economic point of view, this will be a good thing because it can improve the region’s economy. However, many people might disagree with this because Yogyakarta is known for its peacefulness – by making Gunungkidul the new Bali, Yogyakarta will become more crowded and might lose its sense of serenity.
ReplyDeleteI always travel to Jogjakarta every year to visit my grandparents; I usually spent one or two weeks each time I visit Jogja. During my visit, my family always visited some tourist attraction spot in Jogja. But, it wasn’t until recently we knew about the existence of the beautiful beaches in Gunungkidul Regency. So, last year we visited Indrayanti’s beach at Gunungkidul which seen raise in its popularity. When we finally got there through a long journey on the road, We got to see the beautiful scenery which is still preserved as it is. There hadn’t been a lot of visitors at that time, the same case also happens on my second visit to another beach at Gunugkidul. I really enjoyed the time I had spent there because I am not a person who likes being in a massive crowd of people, these kind of preserved places are one of the kind I personally enjoyed most. I am almost certain that the popularity of the Gunungkidul Regency will raise throughout the years as it offers lots of beaches with its own unique traits to visit that makes the long journey worthwhile.
ReplyDeleteJogjakarta is an amazing place, packed with a lot of culture and a lot of fascinating environment. And right now, Gunung Kidul is one of the most visited places in Jogjakarta due to its natural beauty which provides many beaches and other natural phenomena. Some of those other natural phenomena are: hills that provide extraordinary view, caves that are worth exploring, waterfall that just recently known in the year 2010, and many more. Other than that, it also offers traditional performance and ritual that are still going strong. And if we start to talk about what would happen to the economic section due to the natural environment that Gunung Kidul offer, it would mostly and certainly affect the tourism economy side. It would definitely affect the tourism activity on the positive side since most of the tourist that visited Gunung Kidul came from Indonesia and from foreign country. But before achieving that sort of goal, like being the same tourism spot as Bali, the people that work for the tourism activity should manage their effort by promoting the environment in Gunung Kidul and as for the people that has visited this place or are going to, they should protect its environment by not littering and destroying the biosphere in there.
ReplyDeleteYogyakarta is one of my favourite city, it is the city where I study and I have liked this city ever since I came here. It has so many attraction, places, foods, that makes me very comfortable. The people here is also nice that makes me feel welcome. Hearing this news, I am very down for it, I know that Yogyakarta has the assets to be as big as Bali, especially Gunung Kidul. If you have been to Gunung Kidul, you will know that the beaches there is as good as Bali’s beaches. The situation, the air, the waves, is really nice. The different from Bali is just that Gunung Kidul hasn’t received as many publications and exploitation as Bali does. I believe that when Gunung Kidul has the publication as Bali does, it will reach a new level of tourism. And also, the government should pay attention to build Gunung Kidul environment, like the road to go there, the restaurants, public toilet, and all that should be concerned.
ReplyDeleteBefore moving to Jogja to continue college, I already found out that Jogjakarta is also a city that is well-known for tourist destination. An area in the southern part of Jogja, called Gunung Kidul is a high potential tourist destination. It is well known for its beautiful scenery and its beaches. I have been to Gunung Kidul twice with my friends during school live-in and field trip. And I notice that Gunung Kidul is a very nice, esthetic and peaceful area. It is very likely that Gunung Kidul can be the new Bali. Although it would make a positive impact for our country, personally, I disagree for some factors. Jogjakarta is also called as “Kota Pelajar”. It is because there are many universities here with hundred thousand of college students. If Jogja became the new Bali, it will cause population density. Even though Gunung Kidul is in the south area, Jogja has Malioboro, where it is also a popular spot to visit. Hence, it will make the city to crowded. That is the reason from my point of view.
ReplyDeleteYogyakarta is a city filled with a lot of beautiful destinations that attracts both the society itself and tourists. Lately, Gunung Kidul has been the main destination for Yogyakarta tourism. When tourists ask about what they should visit in Yogyakarta, Gunung Kidul will always pop up. Personally, I have never been to Gunung Kidul. However, when I first move to Yogyakarta, my driver here suggests that I should visit Gunung Kidul, but it’s always crowded. Based on the article, it offers natural beauty and I think that is why most people love to visit Gunung Kidul. In my opinion, Gunung Kidul can definitely be an elite tourist destination in the future. Maybe not exactly like Bali, but it can be a tourist destination that has its own characteristic. It may take time to transform Gunung Kidul into a fully elite tourist destination. However, it is worth the time and money because Gunung Kidul has a lot of great potential.
ReplyDeleteI have lived my whole life here at Yogyakarta, and you can consider Yogyakarta as a tourist destination, but a lot of the tourists went to the central city only, such as places like kraton and malioboro, a lot of the tourists rarely went to the other regencies. I went to Gunung Kidul a few times already, and in my opinion it is a pretty nice place to go, in Gunung Kidul there are a lot of tourist destinations, especially natural tourist destinations, such as beaches, caves, and hills. In my opinion, Gunung Kidul can be the next Bali, as long as the facilities in Gunung Kidul are improved by the government, and soon the existence of the new airport will also boost the tourism of Gunung Kidul. I just hoped that, if Gunung Kidul become as popular as Bali, I hope that Gunung Kidul will not be as crowded as Bali, and that the natural destination sites will still be well preserved.
ReplyDeleteYogyakarta is a beautiful city, filled with historical places and many beautiful tourists destinations. Some of the famoust one are Malioboro market, Prambanan temple, and Merapi. All this time, Jogja was well known for it's traditional culture and heritage. Considering it's government is unlike any other region in Indonesia, Jogja still maintain it's kingdom based government so the citizens and the leader of Jogja are still holding on and maintain it's traditional cultures. Reading this article, I don't think Jogja is the place you'll think about going on a vacation for sunbathing, swimming, surfing, etc. If you are looking for those type of destination I can assure you that there are many places in Indonesia that provides a much more fascinating and beautiful beaches than Indrayanti beach that will fulfill your satisfaction better. And again, the publicity for Jogja is not as big as it is for Bali. If people mentioned Indonesia, the one thing that pops into their mind is of course, Bali.
ReplyDeleteYogyakarta is one of the most favourite tourist destinations in Indonesia alongside Bali and Raja Ampat. Yogyakarta is rich in its art and culture as well as its breath taking natural beauty. Gunungkidul is one of the most visited destinations in Yogyakarta as it offers a wide variety of spots to visit. A beautiful mountain range, an exotic beach, caves, and a prehistoric river is the few examples of the destinations we can visit in Gunungkidul. Since Gunungkidul is just recently famous, people’s concern regarding visiting the place consists of accommodation, transport, and clean water. The local government have already developed the area so visitors can stay overnight. There is also access to clean water so it should not be a concern for visitors. Although some roads that are needed to access the spots still needs to be fixed but it is not a huge deal breaker for you to visit Gunungkidul.
ReplyDeleteYogyakarta is a special place as what the province name say Special region of Yogyakarta and it is indeed very special because not only it has been the capital city of Indonesia it is also filled with many many uniqueness from music, art, nature, etc. The idea of Gunungkidul becoming the next Bali od Indonesia I think is too ambitious for now, why? Because in my opinion Gunungkidul or even Yogyakarta is not ready enough to accept foreigners and their way here because the infrastructure here is not yet well developed and I don’t think the people here will easily accept them when they come, other than that even for now when it is holiday season Yogyakarta has been a really crowded place, here and there all traffic jam so that’s why I think Yogyakarta is not yet ready to accept that much tourist like Bali. So in the end of the day what I want to say is that I agree with the idea of Gunungkidul being the next Bali of Indonesia but please fix and improve the infrastructure that we have now. - Dimasbitel (Dimas Aditya Permana)
ReplyDeleteThe last time I visit the regency of Gunung Kidul is probably 3 years ago. My family and I visited Indrayanti Beach on public holiday hence it was very crowded and there were already a lot of tourists. The road was quite accessible, even though it was a bit bumpy ride as the road wasn't perfectly paved at that time. According to the article, the regency administration is currently building central parking lot on 3 hectares in Krakal Beach where visitors are expected to park their vehicles and continue their trip to the beaches in shuttle buses provided by the authority. Moreover, they also has just started to establish more public facilities, including kiosks for souvenirs and culinary outlets, and it is expected to be finished by the end of this year so that by next year they will be ready for operation. In my opinion what the administrative regency is currently doing which is improving public facilities as well as making easier access in accommodating the tourist is proper, knowing that Gunung Kidul tourist attractions is now finally acknowledged locally and internationally.
ReplyDeleteI hope Gunung Kidul will stay that way for a very long time without change into another popular tourists’ destination. What I don’t like about it being another local or even foreign tourists’ destination are the uncontrollable population that will occur when people came to those places, not just on the beaches itself, but it will also affect the roads and houses near it. It’s like a pollution of people being there that makes the area overpopulated. Some people maybe think that it’s a good idea to make an investment to those things for the area of Gunung Kidul. But Gunung Kidul is already a nice natural place without the need of any decoration of human touches, the way it stayed at it is now, people still think it a beautiful place. If people still want to do an investment on something here, I hope they will still think about the environment around them.
ReplyDeleteYogyakarta is known for its fascinating tourism sites and Yogyakarta’s wealthy culture. A standout amongst the most acclaimed and fascinating site is Gunungkidul which is located in the southern piece of Yogyakarta. As of now, Gunungkidul has turned into the most favorite place to be visited in Yogyakarta by tourists. The place offered such amazing scenery and natural beauty, it incorporates wonderful shorelines, the view of the mountain and parks. From this article, it is expressed that the Gunungkidul regency have its own parking lot in Krakal for the tourists, visitors, or guests vehicle. From my perspective, the Gunungkidul regency could also add more facilities. Especially facilities that are for accommodation purposes. This enabled the guests to have the capacity to remain inside the territory and give more helpful to the guests. Moreover, the Gunungkidul regency administrator additionally need to protect the place from any dangerous activities. As there will be more voyagers who visit Gunungkidul regency, there will be higher possibility of human involvement that may result to natural harm.
ReplyDeleteOn August last year, my high school invited the Minister of Finance, the Minister of Tourism, the Minister of Transportation, the Director of PT Angkasa Pura and some of the regents around Yogyakarta to tell us about airports as enablers to accelerate the economic growth. Budi Karya Sumadi, the Minister of Transportation told us that the President has established tourism as one of the leading sectors as there are lots of great potential for tourism. Indonesia has excessive amounts of beautiful destinations, and lots of them are located in Gunung Kidul Regency. That is why the government are currently building infrastructures, information systems, and other enablers not just to make access easier but also to further develop the country’s tourism, ultimately accelerating the country’s economic growth. I really hope that the development plan works, so that it can promote Indonesia’s beauty to the world while establishing a more robust economy.
ReplyDeleteThese days, tourist consider going to Yogyakarta as their vacation destination other than Bali. Yogyakarta is a special city, they have a strong traditional culture and a beautiful panorama. As it is mentioned above, Gunung Kidul have a great potential for tourism. And as I know, the government of Yogyakarta is in full support to develop Gunung Kidul as the new tourism potential in Yogyakarta. Gunung Kidul still have a clean environment and new to people’s eyes, I do think locals and tourists will be pleased to know Gunung Kidul offers a lot of nature beauty and of them is beach. Gunung Kidul is located approximately two hours drive form Yogyakarta. The visitors there are not only local people but also international tourist, it became a choice of place to visit because beaches in Gunung Kidul have a beautiful scenery and clear water. Eventhough beaches in Gunung Kidul resembles beaches in Bali, the difference is beach in Gunung Kidul is not as crowded beaches in Bali.
ReplyDeleteThis post is similar to one of our EWS mid-term exam questions. If I am not mistaken, the question is about our opinion on Yogyakarta becoming an international tourist destination. Personally, there are its pros and cons when we are talking about making a site into an international tourist destination. The pros can be how by declaring a site into an international tourist destination, the economic activity of the site can increase. It can be increased by how people will build resorts around the beach, how people will build restaurants, and even it can impact the small to medium enterprises such as 'warung rokok' or 'warung kelapa muda'. However, we must also consider the cons. If it is expected to become like Bali, we must realize that Bali beaches are now contaminated and full with trashes. The locals are going to be the ones being impacted because they were there before the contamination. In other words, if we want to make a site into an international tourist destination, we must weigh the pros and cons to foresee the future of the environment.
ReplyDeleteI have never visited Gunungkidul; but, looking from the picture, I believe that it is beautiful. This place can be one of the beautiful destinations if you go for a trip to Yogyakarta. I think that it makes sense if Yogyakarta’s Guningkidul is expected to become New Bali since the place is filled with many visitors, both locals and foreigners. This is because we can spot many tourists in Yogyakarta, especially in tourist destinations such as Gunungkidul, which has a very beautiful beach view. Aside from the beautiful view, the added value of Javanese culture also draws attention to tourists and make them interested to visit, where they can see the traditional performances and rituals by local people. By promoting Yogyakarta’s Gunungkidul, we can introduce more to foreign people about Indonesia and making Indonesia known by the world. Therefore, this is a good attempt on making progress for the growth of the country.
ReplyDeletePlease no, i am with the behalf of transporation users hope that this is not happened in the future. Yes, as a person that lives in Yogyakarta since i was born, i am happy if my beloved city is famous and well known all over the world like Bali did; but for the consequences in achieving that? I am fully disagree. When i was a child, i like to travel Yogyakarta a lot with my father using bicycles and breathing fresh air from our neighborhood. But now? One hundred metres from my house is one of the traffic jam center in Yogyakarta on holiday. Thirty minutes to achieve “freedom” from this traffic chaos which is only 150 meters from my house. It is only because Yogyakarta is well known for what it is right now, and for increasing it’s popularity as the second Bali? I know technically it is not in exact Yogyakarta city, but Gunungkidul is still in Yogyakarta province. Some travellers may be wanted to go to Gunungkidul, but they may stay in the hotels which located in Yogyakarta . I think it will be resulting more chaotic traffic jam and furthermore, Yogyakarta is not a big city, our people need space too to live peacefully.
ReplyDeleteI suppose it would bring so much changes to the Gunung Kidul regency if it become a tourism hub; yet, the changes will not necessarily be a good influence. Economically, it would be a gift from the heaven for the regency and the province in general; yet, what I am concern the most is the cultural and environmental side effect which would appears as foreign influence penetrated. Gunung Kidul regency has been known in the past as a barren wasteland due to the lack of water source and karst unfertile soil which shape the landscape. The same curse which struck the regency is also the one that shape the landscape into various wonders. The mountainous landscape means that there are countless points which allows visitor to enjoy the view. The proximity to the sea also means that there are multiple beaches to visit. The cultural concerns that the flow of liquor into the regency would effect the younger generation; and the shift from farming to tourism would mean that we would lose some of the tradition and customs. Though the benefit would be much bigger for the people.
ReplyDeleteIndonesia has a lot of beautiful tourist destinations. Indonesia is extremely rich with natural beauties such as beaches and mountains. Yogyakarta is a city that has both, and even more tourist spots that we could visit. One of the most popular tourist destinations in Yogyakarta is Gunung Kidul. There are beaches, mountain views, caves and a lot more, located in Gunung Kidul. However, if we say that Gunung Kidul is expected to be the next Bali, Gunung Kidul still has a long way to go. Gunung Kidul lacks facilities that are decent. A lot of tourist spots in Gunung Kidul are still difficult to access, since the roads leading to those tourist spots can’t even be called roads. Another airport is, however, being built to accommodate tourists that would come to Jogja. In my opinion, the government still needs to prepare a lot of things if they want Jogja to be the next Bali. Also, they need to make sure every single thing is settled before they promote Yogyakarta as the next Bali, so that everything will be in order when a lot of tourists come flooding in.
ReplyDeleteBali is the most mediocre place where tourists from foreign country visit every year, it is because of the beautiful scenery that caught so many attention of the tourists and offered so many things in term of recreational activities which supported by the natural potential in Bali as we know the beaches. The recreational activities usually related with the natural potential, especially the sea and the beach and the businesses usually take advantage of it by providing jet ski, banana boat, and other recreational activities which related to sea. It is good for Indonesian tourism, yet Bali is an island and there are also local people living there. So it became very crowded in Bali, especially in holiday season. Ministry of tourism and creative economy suggested other alternatives to Bali’s beaches and sea, one of it most probably Gunungkidul’s beach where the scenery is also as beautiful as Bali’s beaches scenery. And it is also possible to open recreational businesses in the area, where it also can support local people in starting up businesses.
ReplyDeleteI think the idea of making Jogja to be the next Bali is something that many people might not be able to accept. Bali is an island that is synonymous with Hindu culture. In addition, the island of Bali is also famous for the many beaches that are very clean and beautiful. Whereas in Jogja, many beaches are dirty and untreated. I think it would make more sense if our government develops Jogja according to the character of Jogja itself. Bali and Jogja are entities that must always be separated in order to make Indonesia a diverse country. Jogja is synonymous with sweet culinary, while Bali with many ancient Hindu sites. In addition, to make Jogja a special area, we need to continue to develop Jogja and show the character of Jogja itself. Let Bali be an island that remains synonymous with its cultural wealth. But still I absolutely sure that Bali and Jogja have their own uniqueness.
ReplyDeleteThe special region of Yogyakarta always has its own characteristic to attract the tourists; it can be from the history, the culinary, the people, and also the nature. Lately, since I have lived in Jogja for around two months, I heard that the most inspiring weekend list is to go to nature places; and one of the most recommended places is Gunung Kidul. I have never been there actually, but from mouth to mouth, people can really tell that Gunung Kidul is a stunning place. All the beaches and the amazing view is inevitable, they said. Even though the location were pretty far from the main city of Jogja, the view and the experience in Gunung Kidul will be all worth. Moreover, there is a hint of information that the new airport of Jogja will be construct near Gunung Kidul. By that, it will certainly increase the number of tourist visiting the Gunung Kidul. Indeed, is a good thing for the economy since it will open huge opportunity for new business and at the same time opening more work vacancy. On the other hand, I think it’s true that Gunung Kidul may become the second Bali in Indonesia.
ReplyDeleteThis article is almost the same with the midterm exam question, however, my opinion is still the same, I think Yogyakarta (especially Gunung Kidul) is still not ready to be an international tourist destination as famous as Bali. Gunung Kidul indeed has so many beautiful beaches such as Sadranan Beach, Kukup beach, Watu Kodok beach, etc,. but to be a tourist destination as famous as Bali, the infrastructure in Gunung Kidul is not yet proper to be called ‘tourist-friendly’. If Gunung Kidul becomes the new Bali, of course it will bring a lot of positive impact towards the resident, especially from the financial perspective, but if the tourism sector in the Gunung Kidul is being developed, I think it can bring negative effect from the social-culture perspective since I think there’s a tendency that the resident of Gunung Kidul will follow the tourist’s lifestyle and wouldn’t stay preserving their local wisdom.
ReplyDeleteFrom the various places I have been to in my lifetime. There is no other city like Yogyakarta anywhere in the world. It's a city mixed in balance between modern culture, traditional culture and ancient culture. The city is surrounded by a variety of natural terrains, which makes it more unique and memorable to visitors both local and foreign. To the north you have the mountains such as Mount Merapi, which is considerably close to the city. To the south the existence of Gunungkidul is available for beach lovers to enjoy. If this part of Yogya was to be turned into a main tourist destination, some things need to be considered in the interest of both the destination and visitors. One of them is how to manage the intake of tourist and then control them. Another factor which needs to be taken into account, is how to conserve the natural beauty of the destination so that human activities do not disturb it.
ReplyDeleteEventough if Gunung Kidul, Yogyakarta become a popular international tourist can provide lots of positive impact there is also negative impacts that will occur.
ReplyDeleteWhen tourism activity takes place, waste problem is inevitably. Waste problem will occur when there is so many people visit in certain tourism area and the waste will be uncontrollable, waste disposal is a serious problem and improper disposal can be a major despoiler of the natural environment - rivers, scenic areas, and roadsides. Waste problem also can affect the beauty of the tourism areas if waste problem can’t be control. Beside waste problem, the society will be susceptible to foreign culture because if Yogyakarta become a popular international tourist, the interaction between local people and a foreigner will happen and the cultural exchange will occur and will affect the local culture.
It's a good thing to make Gunung Kidul a beauriful deatination for tourist. Making Gunung Kidul like Bali means we add more tourism object for Indonesia, and it can also increases the income of the area from the tourism aspect. But, making Gunung Kidul a big tourism spot, not can also bring negative impacts. For example, Gunung Kidul is a small place. It is not very crowded. If we make that place a big tourism spot, of course the number of visitors will highly increases, and maybe the local people have to adapt with their surrounding, maybe by meeing with tourist from oberseas country, so they have to study english of course. If it is said negative, it is not, and if it is said positive, it is not also. Yes, maybe the difficulty is when the local population have to adapt with the new kind of tourism environment. But, if the local people can anticipate that challenge, Gunung Kidul will grow even more bigger to a bigger tourism spot, and be one of the most visited tourism spot in Indonesia.
ReplyDeleteI think Yogyakarta could be the next “tourist hotspot” and would replace Bali’s position if the places are maintained in a very good condition along the future. There are several reasons why Yogyakarta could replace Bali to be one of the top destinations to go to Indonesia. Unlike Bali, who is prominent on having beautiful beaches, Yogyakarta offers several different natural tourist destinations. Besides beaches, Yogyakarta also offers many tourist destinations like caves, hills, pine forests, etc. Although the article focuses on just the Gunungkidul area, I want to point out the whole area of Yogyakarta. I much prefer Yogyakarta compared to Bali due to the fact that Yogyakarta is known for its cultural tourism. Although Bali also has its own culture and many tourists also look for cultural places to go during their time in Bali, in my opinion, I think Yogyakarta is still unbeatable when it comes to showing its unique culture. The presence of the Sultan that still exist and still play a role in the government as well as the people of Yogyakarta that still carry out traditions is what makes Yogyakarta different than Bali.
ReplyDeletePeople who are planning to visit Yogyakarta must have a plan on visiting Gunungkidul. It has a beautiful and breathe taking view of mountain, beach, caves, and even river. Gunungkidul is located in southern Yogyakarta, which is relatively far from the city. It is said that Gunungkidul is trying to improve its potentials to be the new Bali. I think that could possibly happen since the natural beauty is just as beautiful as Bali. Besides that, Yogya is known as ‘kota pelajar’ or the city of student. So, the promotion of Gunungkidul may be powerful relying on the high numbers of citizen of Yogya. It also may become the getaway for them who are tired from their studies. The problem is only about the cleanliness, I guess. People of Gunungkidul could probably be believed to have low awareness of cleanliness. So, the first concern to be cleared is how to minimize the trash there.
ReplyDeleteI can see the appeal in Gunungkidul becoming a more popular tourist attraction, similar to Bali. Gunungkidul, and all of Yogya, is a beautiful place filled with a lot of potential in the tourism industry. Many beaches surrounding the area are beautiful, and ideal for a well-earned vacation. The economy is ideal for an investment which could bring about a new tourist hotspot to supply the mostly underdeveloped local community. Yogyakarta is already a popular tourist destination for Indonesians and foreigners alike, having Gunungkidul as the new Bali would definitely help bring in employment and growth to the economy. However, there are concerns about making Gunungkidul an internationally popular tourist destination. Firstly, there is the locals that could not potentially adapt to the large number of tourists, there is also the negative impacts of tourism that could harm the environment of the area, and consequently the inhabitants of those areas. The southern coast of Java is also particularly unsuited for tourism. The difference in the ocean topography, from places like Bali, results in waters that might not be entirely safe for unsupervised children; thus reducing the likelihood of water themed attractions. The growth of the economy could potentially benefit the community surrounding the area, but economic growth could cause increasing prices, and don’t find this particularly appealing.
ReplyDeleteSince I arrived here in Yogyakarta for my university life, I quickly fell in love with the city. Everything here in Jogja is soothing and welcoming. Starting from the tourism spots, the foods, the locals and everything else are just very delightful. One of the most exciting things for me to see is the tourism spots here such as the beaches, the parks, the sightseeing spots are all beautiful and bountiful in nature. All in all, this is one of Yogyakarta’s strength, the city has the city vibes, yet also has the natural countryside atmosphere. When I heard about the news about Gunung Kidul expected to be the new Bali, I couldn’t agree more. Gunung Kidul has the potential needed to become the new Bali. The vibe, the beaches, the sands, the waves, the people there, are in standard. Gunung Kidul is not that different from Bali. The difference is that Gunung Kidul isn’t fully developed and is still behind in terms of development and functionality. I believe that when Gunung Kidul is treated well and developed well, it will be as good as Bali and would suffice.
ReplyDeleteI came from Yogyakarta and I have always love Yogyakarta. It is a very nice city, and you can have everything here in Yogyakarta. The nature, the city, the culture, the night life, you can have it all. Yogyakarta has a very big potential and should be maximize. I believe that if Yogyakarta is maximized in every part of the city, it is possible to be the new Bali. In this article, we talk about Gunung Kidul region in Yogyakarta. The beaches, the waves, the vibes is as good as Bali. However, what should be maximized is the infrastructure there in Gunung Kidul. Because the road to go there is still difficult, and the facilities there in Gunung Kidul can be said still unproper. So if its all upgraded and maximized it will be as good as Bali. And one thing that should be watch out is the risk that come if Gunung Kidul become the new Bali. That is also the thing that should be a concern for the government.
ReplyDeleteGunungkidul offers a lot of extraordinarily beautiful beaches surrounded by karst cliffs that enhances the sense of serenity and calmness. I have only been to Wohkudu but heard about Watu Kodok, Jogan, and the other beaches that have their own unique scenery. Wohkudu was remote to crowds and pollutions of the cities in Yogyakarta. The parking lot was limited; only one warung was opened to serve coffee and snacks, which is slightly covered in dust due to few visitors coming to the beach. Despite those weaknesses, Wohkudu was very natural and clean, well-preserved from the irresponsible beach-goers whom litter trashes on the sands and pollute the sea. People should take a walk around trees and karsts cliffs here and there until they can finally see the beauty of the ocean.
ReplyDeleteSeeing the natural potentials in the coastal sides, it can definitely attract either local or international tourists to come –being the ‘Bali’ of Yogyakarta. When facilities such as food sellers, parking lot, guards, accommodation, and transportation are ready, I think it is wise for the government to promote Gunung Kidul as one of the main tourist destinations in Yogyakarta.
