History and Debate of Global Warming Exists
Global warming is defined as an increase in the average temperature of the earth's atmosphere. This trend began in the middle of the 20th century and is one of the major environmental concerns of scientists and governmental officials worldwide. The changes in temperature result mostly from the effect of increased concentrations of greenhouse gasses in the atmosphere. These gasses, which include carbon dioxide and methane, are mostly produced through human activity.
Global Warming Debate Controversy
Climate Change
If global warming continues at the rate it is right now, scientists warn against a large number of ill effects. Decreases in the amounts of ice and snow in some regions have already endangered many species and continue to do so. Further global warming will also result in a melting of the polar ice caps, which is already occurring. This will lead not only to loss of habitats, but also to a rise in the level of the ocean. A rise in ocean levels could bury some of the coastal cities and islands under miles of water and greatly reduce the amount of land available for human life.
Climate change already impacts a large number of species. For example, coral reefs and mangrove trees have declined in numbers. There is also significant evidence to support changes in forestry over the last 100 years. As global warming has sped up, there have been a number of responses, both innate and planned. Many animal species have responded by migrating to cooler climates. Others have adapted and some are simply close to extinction.
Political & Scientific Reaction
As far as politics go, the responses are just as varied. Mitigation is common and calls for a reduction of emissions and less reliance on fossil fuels. Coal burning power plants are now replaced with hydraulic power plants and electrical cars are replacing some gasoline efficient cars. Many people, however, feel that this is not enough. These "environmental radicals" want to see a complete overhaul of the system and severe reduction of any reliance on factories or machines that produce greenhouse gasses. Some environmental radicals have proposed a system called geo-engineering. This would involve engineering the climate of the earth artificially through removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere or blocking incoming sunlight. These techniques would be particularly costly to develop, so they are strongly opposed by supporters of mediation and simple policy change.
When it comes down to it, most politicians and scientists agree that the power to stop global warming lies mostly with the people. Whether a supporter of simple mediation and reduction of use or a believer in dramatic overhauls such as geo-engineering, most scientists agree that the more people who are on board, the better. One survey found that over one-third of people were completely unaware of global warming and its effects. A great first step toward changing the environment would be to educate these people.
Taken from HERE.
Global Warming poses a greater threat now than it was ten years ago due to the rise of automobile usage, especially in developing country like Indonesia. Despite scientist’s best efforts to warn us, we sometimes still act like global warming itself doesn’t exist. We need to start addressing this more seriously. If not, what will become of future generations? Will they need to live through extreme conditions? Fortunately, there are some goverments that already took this matter seriously. New regulations are placed on businesses so that they don’t produced too much carbon dioxide. Some European countries also place some extremely difficult conditions on both their driving test and car regulations to discourage car owners. Automobile companies have also treat this as an opportunity to develop new electric or hybrid cars in order to attract new customers. I sincerely hope that these actions taken by their respective parties will be followed by many in the near future.
ReplyDeleteGlobal warming in this 21st has a lot of impact on the environment and causes climate change especially in Indonesia. Global warming is cause by pollution or waste of the engine that cause the ozone layer to break then it minimizes. A lot of people are against global warming and make a lot of movements like planning trees, reduces in the usage of cars, and also use bike to go from one place to another. But, in the reality, they still use their cars and they are giving reasons like “because it’s too far etc.” On the other side, some affects of global warming are like Jaya Wijaya Mountain in Papua. It uses to have snow it the top of the mountain, but because of global warming it causes climate change that it reduces 90% of ice in the top of the mountain. Another effect that we can feel nowadays is Jogjakarta that becomes really hot lately.
ReplyDeleteSome people just will not believe that global warming is happening…Well guess what? It really is happening since there have been many of its effects written as evidence. I would consider myself as someone who is somewhat an environmentalist, but not really to the fullest though. I am aware of the negative effects of global warming as I have read some articles about them which is why I became kind of conservative about the environment such as buying a reusable tumblr so I wouldn’t have to waste plastic straws and bottles and not throwing my trash anywhere I want unlike many other Indonesians. I agree with the statement that said that we have to educate the people first about global warming or the environment in general through subjects like environmental science because I didn’t get one when I was in high school and I believe schools should put that subject to educate the students further. However, I disagree with the engineering of the climate because normally when humans try to regulate mother nature, bad things happen.
ReplyDeleteGlobal warming is really happening now. Despite on what people say about global warming is a hoax, I personally believe that it is actually happening. I am certain about the occurrence of global warming due to the evidence from our current environment's situation. We know that global warming is defined as an increase in earth's temperature. It happens due to several causes caused by human activities, mostly activities that produce pollution. How can some people deny the fact about global warming when we are actually witnessing it right now. If we compare the earth's temperature today with its temperature 60 years ago, it has increased significantly. An example that can be relatable to Indonesians is how unpredictable our weather is. We know that in Indonesia, there are only 2 seasons, sunny and rainy. Usually, it is easy to determine those 2 seasons; one half of the year would be sunny, and the other half would be rainy. Typically, the rainy season will begin after July and will end in January, and the rest will be sunny. Now, we just got rain during November. It is odd how climate change is happening yet people does not realize it yet.
ReplyDeleteGlobal warming is defined as a gradual increase in the overall temperature of the earth's atmosphere generally attributed to the greenhouse effect caused by increased levels of carbon dioxide, chlorofluorocarbons, and other pollutants. Global warming is caused by certain gases in the atmosphere which block heat from escaping. Long-lived gases that remain semi-permanently in the atmosphere and do not respond physically or chemically to changes in temperature are described as climate change. There are various types of gases that contribute to the greenhouse effect. These gases are carbon dioxide, water vapor, methane, nitrous oxide and chlorofluorocarbon. Over the last decade, there has been increase in the burning of coal, oil, etc resulting in an increase in amount of carbon dioxide produced. At the same time, it increases the concentration of carbon dioxide in the greenhouse effect. An effect that is clearly felt is warmth. Earth will be warmer and ice will melt making sea level increases.
ReplyDeleteI personally believe that global warming is happening around us. Even though we cannot feel its direct impact to us, I believe that if we are not cautious, we would be afflicted by it. Could you imagine if ice bergs in the North Pole melt? Could you imagine how much higher the sea level will be? Could you imagine what will happen to the ecosystem in the North Pole? Global warming is here as an impact of our daily life. It is an impact of pollution, too much carbon dioxide being given to air, etc. Even though there has been greenhouse gasses build, it is not enough to help cover the amount of gases we exposed to the Earth. As human beings, all we could do is to prevent it from getting worst. We should build more greenhouse gases and control the amount of gas we expose to air. We should limit the amount of burnings and also, limit pollution.
DeleteIt bothers me how people still deny the existence of climate change despite all the evidence that have been presented and disseminated by scientists from all around the world. Most arguments by climate change deniers rely not on critical analysis but on the rejection of the evidence that is already there. This rejection of evidences is mostly caused by their conspiracy theories involving the “New World Order” or a supranational organization that has the resources to manipulate the entire world to achieve their goals. The sad thing is that many people believe this nonsense. A good way to assess the validity of these conspiracy theories is simply by asking the question of who gets to gain. “Does it make sense for a new world order to fake news about climate change?” “What do they get to gain from it?” “Is it to kill oil companies?” “If so, what is the point of them killing oil companies?” “What is the utility?” And so on and so forth.
ReplyDeleteTo start off, global warming is defined as the slow increase in the average temperature of the earth’s atmosphere because an increased amount of the energy heat striking the earth from the sun is being trapped in the atmosphere and not radiated out into space. What causes global warming itself are the gases that has been released primarily by the burning of fossil fuels and the tiny particles produced by the incomplete procedure of the burning of fossil fuels which then traps the sun’s energy in the atmosphere. Global warming is very dangerous for the earth and will cause a branch of different problems. We know that global warming will cause an increase in temperature and as for me, I, myself can’t already take the heat of Yogyakarta when the sun’s out shining bright in the afternoon, let alone the heat being hot enough that the icecap in the artic starts to melt. What’s even worrying is that when the artic melts drastically, the sea water rises and could possible cause countries to sink.
ReplyDeleteI strongly believe in climate change and simply don’t understand how people can ignore it. I’m a member of Greenpeace NL and the Dutch political party “GroenLinks” (GreenLeft). This political party is growing unbelievably fast and went from 2 to 16 seats in the national parliament during the last elections and is the governing party in the 6 biggest cities in The Netherlands. I believe that the mind-set of people is changing in the right direction, at least in Western Europe. In my opinion there is still a lot of space for improvement here in Indonesia. If I were the shoes of the president, the first thing I would change is the tax on benzene. I don’t think it’s justifiable that the price is only 7000 IDR. In my opinion this doesn’t give any incentive to reduce the benzene consumption. I won’t say that we do everything right in my country, but we impose a tax of 80% on things like this. Therefore the price of benzene is 4 times higher if you compare it to Indonesia.
ReplyDeleteWhether global warming exists or not, it is one of those debates or perhaps the only debate, where in my opinion will never cease until the debating participants start to engage in taking the necessary small measures to reduce global warming themselves, or what I would like to call it as overhauling themselves. You can’t join a march against global warming by first arriving to the meeting point by a car, let alone by a public transportation. There, notice how hard it is? I’m not saying that global warming is something that we should accept defeat over, but I’m just saying that nothing good will ever come by being a hypocrite. You don’t have to entirely follow what I said just now about refusing to hop in a bus or a taxi, but it would be great if you did. The thing is, everyone shouldn’t be judged for how big or little one contributes in getting rid of the current global problem as long as he/she is already doing his/her best.
ReplyDeleteGlobal warming is happening, and I wonder why Trump, a man with power, keeps on denying this issue and assuming that climate change is nothing more than a hoax. I believe that in order to stop global warming, or at least postpone its impact, everyone needs to be aware of this issue and it is impacting the world already. Living in an archipelago like Indonesia, the rise of sea level due to the melting polar ice is a serious issue. I read from BBC where Jakarta is known to be the world's fastest-sinking city and it may be entirely submerged by 2050. In some parts of the city, it is starting to sink 25 cm per year and on average, most parts of the city is sinking by 1-15 cm. I believe that every entity needs to take part in order to save planet earth. You can always start from simple things such as lowering the carbon emission by alternating to public transport or try environmentally friendly transportation such as the bicycle, use less energy, and start to recycle, reduce, and reuse your waste. Start small from yourself, it may bring a big impact to the world.
ReplyDeleteGlobal warming happens when there’s an increasing amount of heat from the sun to the earth that is being trapped in the atmosphere instead of radiated out back to space, and it is known as greenhouse gases. These greenhouse gases include carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, and many more, while the most common one is carbon dioxide. Global warming is in fact really happening, and it is due to human activities. With all the human activities, pollution exists everywhere, and the number of pollution on earth keeps on increasing evidently. Air pollution comes from the excessive burning of fuel in our daily lives, including driving vehicles, and industrial activities such as from the factories which release smoke from the chimneys. These kinds of activities have created a large number of chemical substances in the air every day, which pollutes the air surrounding us. This type of pollution has contributed to the occurrence of global warming.
ReplyDeleteThis issue should be taken seriously because it affects the environment that we live in. A significant increase in illness is one of the outcomes of global warming. Meanwhile, health is one of the most important quality of life that we have to maintain. Another cause of global warming is melting of ice and snow in some regions, which is dangerous for many species being affected, such as penguins and polar bears, as well as some people living around the area, such as glacier melt in Andes mountain. Some people agree that global warming has to lead to climate change or extreme weather, such as floods and droughts, and even hurricanes. The evidence to this cause is the drought in California in 2015, which was said to be partly caused by global warming. Another effect of global warming is the rising sea levels, which resulted in coastal floodings, in Florida for instance.
DeleteGlobal warming is an issue that we cant ignore, I do believe in global warming eventhough there is still many people believe this issue is a hoax. One reason why some deny that climate change exists is because of their own personal experiences. Some people might point out that they still have snow and ice in the winter. As the weathers they witnessed stay the same, they assume that climate change can’t exist because it would otherwise change their experiences. Those who believe in climate change point out that the seasons did change in recent years. Some people may notice that winters are a little milder and that summer starts earlier and feels hotter and more humid. And I still can’t believe Trump, the president of the united states stated that he didn’t believe in global warming and considered that issue as a hoax because he didn’t see any real evidence. Though there is real evidence out there, those who deny climate change exists refuse to look at that evidence. There are claims that any evidence that proves it exists is a type of fake science done by those who want to change public opinions.
ReplyDeleteSo how this global warming happen and how to prevent it getting worse?. Global warming occurs when carbon dioxide (CO2) and other air pollutants and greenhouse gases collect in the atmosphere and absorb sunlight and solar radiation that have bounced off the earth’s surface. Normally, this radiation would escape into space—but these pollutants, which can last for years to centuries in the atmosphere, trap the heat and cause the planet to get hotter. That's what's known as the greenhouse effect. In order to avoid the worst effects of climate change, we need to do a lot more together with other countries to reduce our dependence on fossil fuels and start using clean energy instead. Drive a fuel-efficient vehicle also the solution to this problem since carbon dioxide (CO2) and other air pollutants is the main cause of global warming. Gas-smart cars, such as hybrids and fully electric vehicles, save fuel and money, and can help to prevent this global warming getting worse.
DeleteGlobal warming and climate change is very much true and it is actually happening. We might not feel the impact directly, but we could see the evidence in our environment. One of it is the rising sea level. According to NASA, the sea level rises up to 3.2 mm per year. It may sound like a small number, but it certainly has an immense effect on the earth. The rise of sea level is caused by global warming, more specifically the water from the melting ice sheets and glaciers as well as the expansion of seawater as it warms. One of my favorites documentaries titled, “Racing Extinction” talks about the quality of the oceans. The director of the documentary said, “When carbon dioxide is emitted into the atmosphere, between a third and a half gets absorbed by the oceans, making them more acidic” which could result in the death of phytoplankton. Phytoplankton provide food for many sea creatures and also responsible for making oxygen, which then could lead to another thing. It is unfortunate that there are still people who don’t think climate change and global warming is happening. The least we can do to prevent this phenomenon is to educate the people around us and to speak up about this issue.
