Four songs No. 11

The Waterboys
"Old England"

Man looks up on a yellow sky
And the rain turns to rust in his eye
Rumours of his health are lies
Old England is dying

His clothes are dirty shade of blue
And his ancient shoes worn through
He steals from me and he lies to you
Old England is dying

Still he sings an empires song
And he keeps his navy strong
And he sticks his flag where it ill belongs
Old England is dying

Youre asking what makes me sigh now
What it is makes me shudder so
Well
I just freeze in the wind
And Im numb from the pummeling of the snow
That falls from high in yellow skies
Where the time stained of england flies
Where the homes are warm and the mothers sigh
Where comedians laugh and babies cry
Where criminals are televised politicians fraternize
Journalists are dignified and everyone is civilised
And children stare with heroin eyes
Old England!

Evening has fallen
The swans are singing
The last of sundays bells is ringing
The wind in the trees is sighing
And old England is dying

The Chainsmokers
"Closer"

Hey, I was doing just fine before I met you
I drink too much and that's an issue
But I'm OK
Hey, you tell your friends it was nice to meet them
But I hope I never see them
Again

I know it breaks your heart
Moved to the city in a broke-down car
And four years, no calls
Now you're looking pretty in a hotel bar
And I, I, I, I, I can't stop
No, I, I, I, I, I can't stop

So, baby, pull me closer
In the back seat of your Rover
That I know you can't afford
Bite that tattoo on your shoulder
Pull the sheets right off the corner
Of that mattress that you stole
From your roommate back in Boulder
We ain't ever getting older

We ain't ever getting older
We ain't ever getting older

You look as good as the day I met you
I forget just why I left you,
I was insane
Stay and play that Blink-182 song
That we beat to death in Tucson,
OK

I know it breaks your heart
Moved to the city in a broke-down car
And four years, no call
Now I'm looking pretty in a hotel bar
And I, I, I, I, I can't stop
No, I, I, I, I, I can't stop

So, baby, pull me closer
In the back seat of your Rover
That I know you can't afford
Bite that tattoo on your shoulder
Pull the sheets right off the corner
Of that mattress that you stole
From your roommate back in Boulder
We ain't ever getting older

We ain't ever getting older
We ain't ever getting older

So, baby, pull me closer
In the back seat of your Rover
That I know you can't afford
Bite that tattoo on your shoulder
Pull the sheets right off the corner
Of that mattress that you stole
From your roommate back in Boulder
We ain't ever getting older

We ain't ever getting older
No, we ain't ever getting older
We ain't ever getting older
No, we ain't ever getting older
We ain't ever getting older
We ain't ever getting older
We ain't ever getting older
No, we ain't ever getting older

We ain't ever getting older
No, we ain't ever getting older

Becca Stevens Band
"Imperfect Animals"

I wanna leave you
Time
Plenty of space so that I’m
Still the muse when you write

I wanna take it
Easy on my inner child
Break out and
Bite the hand that holds me down
And take my cues from the horse’s mouth

I wanna hold
Every moment in my own hands
Feel every breath that I’ve taken
Love you the way that I know I can

But it’s impossible
To live in parables
Cause we by nature are
Imperfect animals

These hips
Can carry all your kids
I’ll be the perfect mix
Of what you have
And what you miss

We’ll grow (lovely)
Some perfect leaves on our branches (steady)
Keep steady feet while we’re dancing (for)
To set the pace for our grandkids

Cause it’s impossible
To live in parables
Cause we by nature are
Imperfect animals

And it defies design
To be a paradigm
Still I want perfection
As an imperfect animal

Gimme patience
To lighten up when the storm starts
Take up some slack for my heavy heart
And be your perfect counterpart

I’m trying
To understand what makes us how we are (hurtin’)
Take the hurting as the learning part (perfect)
Imperfection is a perfect place to start

Cause it’s impossible
To live in parables
Cause we by nature are
Imperfect animals

And it defies design
To be a paradigm
Still I want perfection
As an imperfect animal

  1. "Closer" is a song by The Chainsmokers and collaborates with Halsey. This song specifically tells the story of lovers who after they broke up for 4 years, they accidentally meet again. They forget each other and never communicate at all. This song was released around 2016, and this song became very popular especially among teenagers. I still remember back then, My friends and I always sang this song almost everyday, and this song often played in radio, mall, shops, etc. For me, this song is categorized as my all time favourite song, until now, I still listen to this song. I feel like this song is very catchy and by listening to it, the rhythm is very pleasant and does not make you sleepy. This song had received several award nominations, and stayed at the top for 12 consecutive weeks.Until now, in my opinion there are still many people who like this song, I have also met this song a number of times tuned in public places.

  2. From the songs above I only know the Pen Pineapple Apple Pen by PIKOTARO and Closer by The Chainsmokers feat Halsey. From the two songs that I know, I really like Closer by The Chainsmokers feat Halsey. In my opinion, this song is about lovers who broke up years ago but then unintentionally see each other at a party, and they started to reconnect with each other. This song reminds me of my past relationship with my ex – boyfriend. On the other side, the Pen Pineapple Apple Pen song by PIKOTARO is actually a foolish song and I am not a fan of it. Although I must admit, the music video is really funny.

  3. I think most of us are familiar with ‘Closer’ and ‘Pen-pinneaple Apple Pen’. From the two, my favorite is the one produced by The Chainsmokers. ‘Closer’ tells a story of two people who are already broke up, but accidentally met up once more after 4 years. This song is the one that boost The Chainsmoker’s popularity by a large margin, in my humble opinion. While it is true that most of their past songs have made it to the American Top 100, this collaboration with Halsey sat on the top spot for almost 4 weeks. It is also one the most played songs on every local radio, as I cannot remember how many times it is played in one day. As for ‘Pen-Pinneaple Apple Pen’, it is one of the most viral songs on the internet. This song, made by a Japanese comedian named Piko Taro, has no actual meaning whatsoever. But, the catchy tone and funny lyrics has managed to capture the hearts of many listeners.

  4. I thought PPAP song was funny and weird. I was wondering why this song was viral on the internet, and people were making parodies. But then I started to sing it under my breath unconsciously. And I bravely sang it loudly. I don’t know what was going on in my head back then. Probably this song is apparently very hypnotizing. Hahaha I’m kidding. I’ve never seen the music video though, and after I saw it just now, I think the whole dance in the music video is really suitable for people who are on diet and are lazy to do sports (running, jogging, etc.). If you are slothful, I recommend you to dance to this song every morning and evening. You can change the speed and make it two times faster, or even three. It is up to your preference. I hope your diet goes well. Good luck, my friends.

    1. I looked for this song on Google and this is a single by Pikotaro, a fictional singer-songwriter created and portrayed by Japanese comedian Daimaou Kosaka. Kosaka insists that Pikotaro is another person promoted by him, but they are considered the same person. It’s been two years since the music video was released on Youtube on 25 August 2016. According to Wikipedia, in June 2018 the official video has been viewed almost 200 million times, spawned parodies, and has been hailed as the new “Gangnam Style” by various newspapers and online media. Honestly I’m not surprised if this song is considered as the new “Gangnam Style” because the song itself brings uniqueness and it is quite catchy, which are requirements needed for a song to become popular. What’s more, the lyrics are easy to remember and the dance is not that hard to be imitated. At the end of 2016, the songs charted at number 6 on Japan Hot 100 Year-end Chart.

  5. As for The Chainsmoker’s Closer, I remember the first time I heard it was when I was in Physical Education subject in high school. It was when I was about to run around the volleyball field to be exact. I found it very catchy and saddening at the same time. For several months, this song was played repetitively on the Radio and my friends sang it as well. I guess I’m getting bored to hear it a lot. But anyway, like my friend, Rafif, has mentioned, this song is about two people who already broke up but meet again after four years. And while they have no emotional connection, physically, the guy is attracted to her still, and he claims, "I can't stop, no, I can't stop.". The chorus ends with the guy singing, "We ain't ever getting older." This line is about living in the moment and acting for a little while like there are no consequences to one's actions. The band is essentially saying, "We are in a moment that we will never leave, and we can enjoy it for all that it is worth."

    1. The Chainsmokers is an American DJ and production duo consisting of Alex Pall Andrew Taggart. Andre Taggart provides his vocals in their song “Closer”. The song itself was released on July 29 2016 through Disruptor Records (an American record label founded by Adam Alpert in September, as a joint venture with Sony Music Entertainment) and Columbia Records (an American record label owned by Sony Music Entertainment, a subsidiary of Sony Corporation of America, the North American division of Japanese conglomerate Sony). Closer was written by Taggart, Halsey (I just noticed her voice), Shaun Frank, Freddy Kennett, Isaac Slade, and Joe King. The production of this song was handled by The Chainsmokers. In terms of music genre, it is a future bass and pop song with a “retro” style synthesizer in the chorus. The Chainsmokers became the first act to have four songs ("Closer" being the fourth) that top the Dance/Electronic Songs chart, passing Calvin Harris, who held the previous record with three. In 2018, the song received a diamond certification by the RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America) for selling 10 million units in the United States.

  6. Wow, this is getting more interesting every week. Pen Pineapple Apple Pen was a big hit! I remembered how I used to hate that song so much. I don't even know why. Maybe only because it was not my style at all. The Chainsmokers's Closer used to be a hit too. In contrast of the PPAP, I used to sing Closer often with my friends but later I hated that song too (probably because I sang too much to that song). Feels like it's been years since the last time I listened to that song. I didn't know much about the two other songs that you posted but maybe I will listen to them later (not now because I am currently in Introduction to Business class). But yeah, I can't believe that in the past 3 weeks I've been constantly interested in your Four Songs article Sir. You did a good job in selecting songs.

  7. Closer by The Chainsmokers featuring Halsey has become a very popular song since its release back in 2016. This might be because at that time, the music genre of dance/electronic was the crowd’s favourite. In addition, this is The Chainsmokers’ first ever song where Andrew Taggart, one of the DJ, provide his vocal in the song. I really enjoy listening to this song when I first heard it. But after a while, it gets overplayed; everywhere I go, from cafĆ© to shopping malls and even in the car, I would hear this song being played on speaker. This song and the music video got nominated for many awards and won a few. The awards that they won include Dance song of the Year 2017 by iHeartRadio Music Awards, Favourite International Video 2017 by Myx Music Awards, Top Hot 100 Song, Top Collaboration 2017, and Top Dance/Electronic Song 2017 by Billboard Music Awards.

  8. I think closer, is the best music from chainsmokers, and this song has reach top song on the Billboard Hot 100. The song's super catchy, and the lyrics are just vague enough that they can get stuck inside a person's head and make him or her wonder exactly what's happening between the lines. I love this song because this song has great female voice and excellent music “Closer" has a few interesting aspects that we can take a closer look into. There's obviously a barrier between the two members of the relationship, and that seems to have been part of what helped them to define themselves as separate from each other. The girl's parents are rich, and the guy has to work for everything he has (ironic since Halsey actually couldn't attend a four year university since she couldn't afford it and both.
Because of this, they see themselves as being from different social groups and possibly look down on each other as a result.

  9. Out of the 4 songs posted on this post, I am quite familiar with the 2 songs entitled "PPAP" and "Closer". Both of these songs are very famous during their time. "PPAP (Pen Pineapple Apple Pen)" was a big hit and it is very viral on the internet. At some point, people on the internet once made PPAP viral by making their own dance cover of it. Not only from Asia, but people from around the world made a cover of it. Surprisingly, the song itself was popular not in the adult's segment, but it is popular in the kid's segments, due to the simple and quite funny lyrics. Another song was "Closer", a major hit by The Chainsmokers. This song was their first "top" song. This song made The Chainsmokers famous. after this song was released, The Chainsmokers became "performer of the month" and immediately performed in awards show.

  10. I am only going to comment on two of the four songs because those are the songs that I am familiar with and I am just too lazy to listen to the other two hehe. So about the PPAP song…It is straight up horrible. When the song became so popular, I couldn’t really grasp what made it popular aside from its stupid and nonsensical lyrics or dancing or way of singing. I mean I did try to do the hand gestures while singing the song once but cringed a lot after because I just didn’t like it by nature. For the second song that I’m familiar with, and everyone else is as well, Closer is a song that I like very much because I’m practically a fan of western pop and the song has these finger snaps and little beats to it, very pleasuring to the ears for me. Also it has some piano instrumental which I love very much.

  11. From the four songs that are listed above, I would like to discuss two songs. The first song that I want to discuss is the song called PPAP (Pen Pineapple Apple Pen). This song is created by Pikotaro, a Japanese comedian. When this song first came out it really took the world by storm because of the uniqueness of the song itself. I personally think that the song is not really a good song. What makes it popular is the weird vibe of the song that is different from any songs these days. The music video of the song portrays Pikotaro that wears a stylish yellow outfit. In the music video you can see Pikotaro uses an imaginary pen, pineapple and apple as a main property of the video. Because of the ridiculousness of the music video and also the music itself, it really became famous around the world back then in 2016.

    1. The second song that I want to discuss is the song titled Closer by The Chainsmokers featuring Halsey. Back in high school, I used to love hearing this song. It all changed when one of my friends in high school sang this song under a high school event circumstance. He sang it with a not so good voice. Because of this every time I hear the song I immediately remember to my friend’s version of the song. What makes it even worse is that he didn’t even think that his voice is awful and will continue to sing if he’s being asked to. It’s not that I want to mock him or something, it’s just that he really changes my perspective towards the song and it kind of makes me feel awkward towards the song. I really wanted to enjoy the song as much as I do before but I just can’t.

  12. Honestly the one that caught my attention was the PPAP song by Pikotaro ; a typical earworm song that gained popularity as fast as it died out soon after. This song is too easy for anyone to memorize, and everyone was making internet memes out of it ; and when you know you’re an internet meme, you’re as good as gaining an online sensation but unfortunately, only for a short period of time. As much as we all know it was no quality work, and people are somewhat overly appreciating Pikotaro for his song, and he still acquired his short-lived popularity all over the world and even if it was short-lived, that short period was probably earning him a considerable amount of money. I am unsure whether he intended that song to gain popularity or not, but if he did, he had achieved it and his method is not unique to himself, as viral tactics have been around for a long time.

  13. My favorite songs from above is ‘Closer’ by The Chainsmokers featuring Halsey. I never heard of the other song but I heard ‘Pen Pineapple Pen Apple Pen’ once and I didn’t like it very much, but a lot of people think that the song is funny and very catchy. I always love The Chainsmokers, their song is a mix between pop and trap. I like The Chainsmokers so much because their songs are not too heavy and it’s the type of feel-good songs. Also, their lyrics are good and meaningful. Every time they release a new song, I always listened to them because their songs aren’t boring. Closer is a song about a financial barrier between the two members of the relationship, and that seems to have been part of what helped them to define themselves as separate from each other. The song is very popular in 2016 but a lot of people still listen to it until now.

  14. Alexander O'Connor, better known by his stage name Rex Orange County, is an English recording artist and songwriter. Blending a way with words and elements of jazz, hip-hop, soul, and bedroom electronica into a sophisticated type of singer/songwriter fare, Rex Orange County is the performance alias of English musician Alex O'Connor. Apricot Princess is the second studio album by English recording artist Rex Orange County. It was released on 26 April 2017. One of the single, ‘Untitled’ was released on April 19, 2017. “It’s a song all about the feeling you get when you do something you regret and coming to terms with your own choices," he said. "I always knew I’d make a video for this song and always had this concept in mind. It’s essentially just a visual representation of what’s being said in the song." My favorite line would be, 'Cause I can barely breathe and I don't know how I'll explain myself this time Wish it wasn't a case of this time’

  15. From all of the four songs above, the only songs that I know are Closer by The Chainsmokers and PPAP or Pen Pineapple Apple Pen by Pikotaro. Both of the songs were very popular, especially Pen Pineapple apple pen by Pikotaro. I remember many of my friends played Closer by The Chainsmokers over and over again. We used to like that song very much. And for once, my friend performed in a cafe and sang that song. Pen pineapple apple pen was a huge hit back then in 2016. It was very popular when I was in high school. People viewed the video clip a lot. The lyrics is very unique, it only says about the pen and the apple, and the pen and the pineapple. To me, the lyrics is not very meaningful. It doesn’t mean anything. I don’t know and wonder why so many people viewed the video clip and listen to the song.

  16. Closer is one of the most repeated songs in almost all radio stations’ playlists during I could say 2016. I noticed the song right away because it has a catchy beat like The Chainsmokers always put in most of their songs. I’m not a fan of the duo, but songs with pop slash EDM genre had me dancing and somehow get stuck in my head since pop songs always get the chance to be repeated in most radio stations in Indonesia. The song Closer was overly played I believe back then. Because I remember whenever I heard the intro of Closer, I was pretty annoyed, but somehow, it turned out that I would still dance to the song. There was one video of The Chainsmokers sang Closer live that I watched, and I was pretty confused with the singer singing it live because it was so different from the recording. But yeah, we must admit that sometimes some auto tune edits are needed to make a song sounds better.

    1. The song PPAP is the most distinct out of the other four songs. It blew up the world of music in 2016. PPAP is a song sang by PIKOTARO which to be honest I don’t really know who he was. It’s that kind of song that just blows up the internet for its “meme able” content and then only God knows about the rest of his life. I actually don’t really know the meaning of the song since the lyrics are just stating that he has a pen, pineapple and an apple. Its repetitive may be the reason why people get the song stuck in their heads easily. Actually, its freakiness reminds me of the infamous video of “Senam yang Iya Iyalah” from Japan. Here’s the link if you’re interested, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q9zb3Q9sBpU. I think those two videos have the same level of quirkiness that Japanese usually have in their comedy world. I just hope that he didn’t just show up in the internet for that song and then leaves the entertainment world for good.

  17. Oh wow, from all the songs listed above, why there must be PPAP there on the list? i know that it’s one of the songs known for the catchy lyrics but there’s no meaning or value behind the song in my opinion . The whole song It’s just trying to connect a pen and a pineapple and a pen with an apple and both. What’s the point of this song? I just wanted to know to be honest. But then, people do love it and netizens do make a meme out of it back when it’s popular and viral. Which thanks to PIKOTARO the man himself, we got something to be memed about back then. However, PIKOTARO is already popular in Japan before PPAP went famous back then since he’s well known as a comedian in Japan. As a random fact, he’s actually dressed up as Borsalino from One Piece in the video clip in which is one of the character from the popular series.

    1. However, from all the songs above, my favourite is still Closer by the Chainsmokers, that song’s nice beat as well as the fact that Halsey has a nice and natural (here refers to the less-to-none Auto-tuned) voice makes the combination of the beat and the lyric a nice harmony. As the result of this combination, this song peaked at number 29 on the billboard’s best 100 pop song back in 2016, besides since this song’s also well-known and popular back then, there’re lots of covers and remixes of this song available on YouTube and SoundCloud and some of them are coming from famous figures such as Wiz Khalifa and many Dj’s throughout the world. But then, the most popular remix is from T-Mass in which up until today it reached around 40 Million views on YouTube. The song itself is actually a song which celebrates youth and heartbreak (as available on Genius and verified by the DJ themselves) and also on September 15, 2018, the song was certified Diamond by the RCAA, verifying that the song had sold an equivalent ten million units in the United States alone.

  18. The Pen Pineapple Apple Pen song is one of those love it or hate it kind of song. The song was written by Daimaou Kosaka, better known by his stage name Pikotaro. This is more of a joke than it is a song to me, as its lyrics seem to just be non-sense for the most part. The song was viral due to its funny and comical nature, and along with its catchy phrases; its difficult not to get caught up and have some fun yourself. And I think that the simplicity of the lyrics along with the simple choices of words really helped it get propelled into the limelight. Its actually nice to have these types of songs made every once in a while. It breaks the serious nature of music creation and I suppose it then creates a release of some pressure in that sense. Besides, who doesn't want to have a bit of fun?

  19. I have to say that I am now loving all of the Four Songs Articles, because now they are always filled with songs that I actually know or have listened to before. For the first song which is called “Old England” by The Waterboys, I actually never heard this song before. Same thing for the fourth song. I have never heard or knew about that song either. For the second song which is called “Pen Apple Pineapple Pen”, it was once a song that went extremely viral. I have to say that this song is extremely annoying, so it would definitely get stuck in your head. For the song “Closer” by the Chainsmokers featuring Halsey, it is definitely a song that I have had a love and hate relationship with. When the song first came out, I loved it. I was obsessed with that song like no other. After a while, it got way too overplayed. I end up hating that song. Now, I hate that song. Every time it comes on the radio, it just annoys me.

  20. Firstly, I would like to discuss about one of my favorite songs which is Closer by The Chainsmokers feat. Halsey, a song that I used to sing almost everyday when I was overly bored and need motivations. This song was released initially on July 29, 2016. Based on Wikipedia, Closer became both The Chainsmokers' and Halsey's first number one single on the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States. The song stayed at the top spot for 12 consecutive weeks. The Chainsmokers became the first act to have four songs ("Closer" being the fourth) that top the Dance/Electronic Songs chart, passing Calvin Harris, who held the previous record with three. The song went on to become the first song to spend 26 weeks in the top five of the Billboard Hot 100 chart. It also became only the second song in the history of the Hot 100 chart to spend 32 weeks in the top ten of the chart. From the following facts we could see about the song ‘Closer’ we could conclude that the song was a hit and influenced various circles

    1. The second song I highly interested to comment is the PPAP by Pikotaro. The song was released as a music video on YouTube on 25 August 2016, and has since become a viral video. On 27 September 2016, Justin Bieber shared the video on Twitter, captioning it as his "favorite video on the Internet". The video had since gone viral, averaging over 1.5 million hits a day, and being touted as the new "Gangnam Style" by various newspapers and online media

Actually, I have lots of questions about why was this song so special and gone extra viral. Well, I have some opinion about why it could be extra famous and viral. Firstly, it is because 3 main factors which are Asian, Catchy and Senseless. Secondly, I believe the lyrics also contribute on the popularity of the song.

      I have a pen I have a Apple, Apple-pen.
      Apple-pen !
      I have a pen I have Pineapple, Pineapple-pen.
      Pineapple-pen !
      Apple-pen, Pineapple-pen
      Pen-Pineapple-Apple-PenPineapple-pen !
      Pen-Pineapple-Apple-pen
      Pen-Pineapple-Apple-PenPineapple-pen !

Just like that, it could be viral. Why? Because it is senseless in many ways. It is rare to find a song which is catchy and senseless at the same time.

  21. When The Chainsmoker's Closer came out in mid 2016, I loved and played the song in my car over and over. My sisters and I were often jamming to and singing this song at the top of our lungs and making video with our phone. Through the lyrics, it is known that this song is about two ex lovers who meet and reconcile after four years long with no contact and anything. I think they were both childish and reckless when they were younger, and still are but more mature now. Little fun fact: Camila Cabello was originally placed to be singing Halsey's part but had to give the song up because she was still a member of Fifth Harmony which was preparing for their second album. There is a short-clip of Camila singing the refrain of the song which you can found on YouTube. Even though I love Halsey, I prefer Camila's version and I want to hear her version in full-length very much.

  22. I only know two out of for songs above, which are Pikotaro’s Pen Pineapple Apple Pen and The Chainsmoker’s Closer. Closer was being very well-known when released, raising The Chainsmoker’s popularity on its first single. Its light EDM beat and simple structure make it catchy and easy to be remembered. A lot of people also made a cover of the song that contributes to building up its existence as well. I was, however, a little bit disappointed on its Something Just Like This for having a very similar beat, but not as splendid as Closer did. On the other hand, PPAP was also booming for its funny music video and lyric. I saw it on 9GAG at first and came up with the impression of a very stupid but laughable song at the same time. But that is the only Pikotaro’s song I know, though. I searched on Google and found out that he created more other songs I never knew of.

  23. I am going to give my thoughts on the second song by Daimaou Kosaka which titled as “Pen Pineapple Apple Pen” which also known as PPAP—is a popular song two years ago. I think Daimaou Kosaka come from Japan, he sang this song and it became viral around 2016. People start to make a parody or cover of this song on the social media so it was played almost everywhere. I could not really get what does the song actually mean but I think we could enjoy the rhythm instead. The third song is also a very popular song back in 2017. It is a song by The Chainsmokers which titled as “Closer”. This song was also frequently played. It was also in Top-Charts music media platform. But, as the song was played in many places, people might get tired of hearing this song. So, maybe it is normal to see that sometimes people hate this song. Even though, song is a taste and preferance!

    1. I am going to talk about the fourth song which titled as “Imperfect Animals” by Becca Stevens Band. I can see by the lyrics, the idea of this song is loving someone but they could not be together. On the third verse it is saying, “I wanna hold, every moment in my own hands, feel every breath that I’ve taken, love you the way that I know I can.” I think it is simply say the hope of a woman to loving someone but she could not express it in any other way. But on the first verse it is saying, “I wanna leave you, time, plenty of space so that I’m still the muse when you write.” I think the meaning of this verse is about the girl who is about to leave the relationship but her partner could not forget her, yet. So, I am a little bit confused of what this song is actually about.

  24. I think that out of the four songs in this ‘four songs no.11’ article, there are two songs which most of us are familiar with. They are “Pen Pineapple Apple Pen” which is also known as PPAP by Pikotaro and “Closer” by The Chainsmokers. The first song that I’d like to discuss first is PPAP. This song went viral a few years ago, in 2016 to be exact, and because of how viral this song was, many content creators and Youtubers made cover of this song. Many people found that this song has unique and simple lyrics; yet funny at the same time. To be honest though, I don’t find this song pleasant to be listened to. The next song that I’d like to discuss is probably the most listened by the majority of EWS blog readers out of the four songs. At the time it was released, I remember that this song was played quite frequently at many radio stations in Indonesia, and I think it was overplayed.

  25. Like many people, the only song I know are The Chainsmokers' "Closer" and the Pikotaro's " Pen Pineapple Apple Pen". The Chainsmokers is one of the most popular artists in the EDM genre music. Another famous song from them is "Don't let me down" where they chose Daya to be featured in the song. But the one song that really went viral in the year 2014 is the one that called "#Selfie". Famous for their head-banging beats, most of their songs became popular because of it's catchy lyrics and tones. While the PPAP song, first went viral because Justin Bieber shared on twitter how much he loved it, saying that PPAP is his favorite video on the internet. After that, both the song and the video got viral and it easily got stuck in people's mind because of it's funny and catchy phrase. Overall I think both songs has it's own way of entertaining people and easily went popular for it.

  26. Speaking of The Chainsmokers, there are so many songs that I like about them. Closer is the title of the song that I first heard in 2016 when I was in second grade. This song saves a lot of memories of high school, which is very hard for me to forget. Closer is a song composed by an American DJ duo of Alex Pall and Andrew Taggart. The thing I like the most is about closer video clips. In the video, The Chainsmoker collaborates with Rory Kramer. He is a very well-known videographer in the USA for collaborating with many singers such as AVICII in his video clip entitled "The Night". Closer has a meaning about lovers who have been separated for a long time but returned to meet at some time. Closer is sung by Halsey, an American singer, songwriter, and actress who is famous for her song titled "Colors".

  27. Another great song choice that was picked in this article. There are only two songs out of four that I know in this article though. The songs that I know are Closer by The Chainsmokers and PPAP by Pikotaro. These two songs are great in different way in my opinion. The closer songs I good because it has a really nice beat and sounds catchy. Also, the song is not boring which is nice for people who get bored easily like me. PPAP on the other is a very fun and addictive song. The song is actually very short, and the lyrics are just repeated but somehow it stuck in everyone’s mind which is why the song went viral. As for the other two songs, I have never heard of it. I have listened to it for a bit and I think that the song does not suit me very well.

  28. From all of the four songs above, the only songs that I really know is Closer by The Chainsmokers and PPAP by Pikotaro. I still remember the time where Closer was at top chart of every radio station in Indonesia and also other countries just like Despacito did, at first it was really nice to hear the song but after like five times hearing it in one day I got bored of it and started to hate it because everywhere you go it is almost certain that you will hear that song, and also my ‘normies’ friend can’t stop and won’t stop singing that damn song at school, I am really glad that song’s hype has gone down. The other songs PPAP was really weird too the first time I heard it and when people said that the video clip was very funny I didn’t really found what’s really funny about it and I never really liked that song, but soon after people start to remix it I grew fond of that song and I started to listen to the remixes.

  29. From the four songs above, Pen Pineapple Apple Pen by PIKOTARO and closer by The Chainsmokers feat Halsey are the two songs that I know. Pen Pineapple Apple Pen is well known because it is funny and weird, PIKOTARO made a unique yet straightforward move that everybody can remember, the lyrics itself is ridiculous. The second song which is Closer by The Chainsmokers is the song that most people like because of its beat and it's touchy love lyrics that everybody can relate. I enjoyed listening to EDM(Electronic Dance Music) since I was on 8 graders and I start looking to The Chainsmokers since they released “SELFIE” back in 2014. I was fortunate that I can watch The Chainsm0kers a couple times when I was 0n 10th grade and 2 years ago with my family in Singapore. The Chainsmoker performed well on both concert because they always have a fantastic crowd control with beautiful lighting.

  30. Out of these four songs i recognise two of them. Those songs are Pen Pineapple Apple pen and Closer by Chainsmokers. I believe that everybody knows these 2 song as they are quite viral. I’m not big fan of the chainsmokers but i must say that the song closer is quite nice. The tone of the music is nice and simple. Its easy to remember especially because its played over and overagain on the radio. I thin that closer can be considered as a radio song as it’s often played on radio stations for the youth population. It has even been put in the Billboard hot 100 songs. The lyrics of Closer by Chainsmokers talks about a couple who used o be together and broke up. After breaking up they never see each other or keep in touch until they coincidentally meet at a party. This party made them regret breaking up and sparked an attractionbetwwen the couple which died a long time ago.

    1. As for the Pen Pineapple Apple pen song i think it’s just ridiculous. I do not like this song a bit. I think it is just lazy writing, bad lyrics. They lyrics are just I have a pen I have a Apple, Apple-pen. Apple- pen! And I have a pen I have Pineapple, Pineapple-pen.Pineapple-pen !Apple-pen, Pineapple-pen Pen-Pineapple-Apple-PenPineapple-pen ! Pen-Pineapple-Apple-pen. Everyone can write these lyrics. Its just repetitive and boring. It is anything other than creative. I did some research on the composer of PPAP and it turns out to be PIKOTARO. I think he is trying to make a funny song but in my opinion he failed to do it. It’s just some rubbish lyrics with no sense of art. I think it became viral becauseit has a trademark. What i mean is the silly dance moves of PIKOTARO.

  31. Just like everyone else, the songs I am familiar with are only “Pen Pineapple Apple Pen” and The Chainsmokers’ “Closer”. The song “Closer” was overplayed, I should say. It was on every radio station all the time. Also, my sister really likes this song; I remember she would listen to it all the time in the car. I, myself, was not a fan of The Chainsmokers and never really pay attention to their songs. But, I hear their songs all the time in the radio, so it was unavoidable knowing their songs. Back in 2017, they released a song together with Coldplay called “Something Just Like This” for their album called “Memories…Do Not Open” it was one of their song that I genuinely like. The song was different from how Coldplay would produce their song, so it gives Coldplay a different image. Other than “Something Just Like This”, another song from The Chainsmokers that I like is “Don’t Let Me Down”.

  32. When I first listened to The Closer, I was instantly obsessed with it. In fact, it’s what made me like The Chainsmokers in the first place. The beat and the melody of the song is really catchy, which is no wonder why it was so popular and was played everywhere. The lyrics are really great as well, they tell a bittersweet story between two ex-lovers and meeting each other again after a long time and remembering the love they had. The lyrics are really descriptive and yet whenever it comes on the radio, I always find myself singing along to it word by word. Halsey’s voice is very unique, and is the perfect reason why she’s fit at singing this song. Her unique voice really shows how sad the lyrics are actually, but it also fits with the EDM and lighthearted atmosphere of the song itself. I haven’t listened to this song in a while, so thank you for putting this song and reminding how great it is Mr. Adrian!

  33. Whoa, that “Pen Pineapple Apple Pen” or we can call “PPAP” song by Pikotaro is really odd and strange, but in a good way I guess because it is funny.
I did some research about this song and I found something interesting and I want to share it with you who read this comment.
First of all, “PPAP” is a Japanese YouTube video that had garnered millions of views. There’ve been lots of memes related to this on social media, 9Gag and more. This video is the true meaning of “ending up on the wrong side of YouTube.” While it's funny for some people, some other finds it nonsensical and annoying.

So, here is 10 Facts You Need to Know About “Pen Pineapple Apple Pen” song based on goodyfeed.com

    1. Created by a Japanese guy Piko-taro.

    1. 2. Piko-taro is created by DJ Kosaka Daimaou.
His character Piko-taro is created, once again by DJ Kosaka Daimaou whose real name is Kuzuhito Kosaka. It’s almost a create-ception! Also, Kosaka is a comedian who appeared in a film titled Nogami in 2012.

      3. The lyrics doesn’t mean anything
In case you still haven’t realized, the lyrics have no meaning, and they make absolutely zero sense. So don’t try Googling the meaning of PPAP.
      4. He’s Borsalino from One Piece in real life
Yes, his character is actually Borsalino (Kizaru) from One Piece, a popular Japanese manga series. Look at that golden yellowish light beam costume!
      5. Piko-taro was first introduced in stand-up performances
Kosaka first introduced his character Piko-taro in stand-up performances, which is a comic style where the comedian performs in front of a live audience. His character was so well-loved and popular that he decided to bring it to the next level – PEN PINEAPPLE APPLE PEN.
In other words, yeah, it’s not a new character. It just an old character that has gone viral online.

    2. 6. There’re all sorts of remixes and parodies online
Well, this is expected to happen with our innovative younger generation. Think Harlem Shake, Gangnam Style and of course, our local “Unbelievable”. There’re so many, it’s hard for me to list them down–just YouTube it.

      7. He may reply you!!!
If you’re lucky enough, he may reply you on Twitter if you submit your version to him! He’s replied some of the curious English speaking fans who had submitted their own versions, so tweet him @pikotaro_ppap if you’re feeling adventurous.

      8. Piko-taro has other videos
Piko-taro actually has several other videos and songs, but are mostly in Japanese. His most popular song is no doubt, the “I have a pen, I have an appo.”

      9. The comments are funny
If you did bother to see the comments at all, it’s funny and sarcastic as hell. While some people felt the song to be “inspiring” or referring it as “cancer song,” some people loved it so much they wanted this song to be “played at their funeral.” The Internet is indeed deadly.

    3. And the last one,
      10. The original version has gone viral
The original version which is uploaded in August by the dude in the video, has gone viral with 4 million views in one month. It has all the ingredients of a viral song – catchy and highly addictive rhythm, nonsense lyrics and easy dance moves. Anyone can sing it, or dance to it. It is stupid yet hilarious.

Oh, I also found an unexpected and super interesting fact from washingtonpost.com
So, Trump expected to meet ‘Pen Pineapple Apple Pen’ singer Pikotaro in Japan!!!

President Trump arrives in Tokyo this Saturday for the start of a 12-day trip to Asia. It’s an important trip for the American leader, who will have to discuss a number of difficult issues in the region including ongoing tension with North Korea.
But while Trump is in Japan, he may also receive some unusual entertainment —courtesy of an outlandish, leopard skin-clad singer named Pikotaro and his absurdly popular song, “Pen Pineapple Apple Pen.”
Kyodo news agency reports that Trump will be greeted by the performer at a dinner on Monday, the day after the American president is scheduled to play a round of golf with Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and Japanese golfer Hideki Matsuyama, currently ranked fourth in the world.

  34. The song which actually I want to talk about is the song from The Chainsmokers called “closer” where this song is pretty much to the point, mentioning about the part of someone’s past which came back out of nowhere and there is a hope to make it to be something again. It is a pretty cliche and cheesy song for lover that long gone and they reunited once more. Overall the song mentioned about the past that they have and how it stick to this person memories so much, and how that memories will stay although the time goes on and they got older, and that is my interpretation from the bit of this song where the lyric goes “we ain’t ever getting older” the part we meaning their memories despite their age which always got older through time. The other bit of this song is the bit of lyrics from the beginning of the song where it says,

“Hey, I was doing just fine before I met you
I drink too much and that's an issue
    But I'm OK..”

My personal interpretation of this bit is that the person singing this song wanted to show to someone from his or her past that they are okay even they are doing great without the presence of this one particular person and wanted to show how irrelevant Is the presence of this one person. However the actual thing is that he or she singing this song felt that they became a mess from the part “..I drink too much and that’s an issue…” this part show how they can’t put their things together without the presence of this one person, yet he or she still tries to say that they are okay to support the first lyric.
