everyone's crazy over trivial things
what do i do?
i take a little time
at the end of the day
there's soap in our eyes
everyone's so tender
on their own tenterhooks
and praying for the re-runs
what are we like?
everyone clings to material things
thinking they pay nothing
i'm stuck here again
but i take it on the chin
like original sin
and always pin my hopes
yes i'm stuck here again
like a bug in brandy,
like a moth at the flame
even birds fly on
the things that i believed in
no longer feel the same
the things that i followed
turned sour they turned lame
things that i long for
So, I once read a book about particular emotions that humans have, this “Perpetual Emotion” did appear in the book. What I remembered from the book that perpetual emotions are people who does not operate with the full range of emotions that other people do and certainly nowhere near the heightened emotions that the empathic individual is capable of. So, obviously we indirectly request someone’s emotional output in order to cover that hole which exists inside of us. Ripped of certain emotions we are left with an emptiness which we want to fill. This kind of emptiness will be filled with either those emotions, or something dangerous. An it’s not yet the point of us making decisions. Decisions made on an emotional basis are often poor decisions. Most people allow their decisions to be based on emotion. Those decisions will be bad decisions. Such as lending someone cash just because you feel bad about their state even though you know they are unlikely to repay you.
ReplyDeleteThe poem to me seems to describe the feelings of confusion as well as having an overall impression that the writer seems annoyed at certain events that transpired the way it did. Such as changes to daily activities or to habits. To some degree it seems like the writer wishes that some events were frozen in time or remained the way it always was. I would say it seems like a sense of nostalgia and along with that a slight hint of disappointment. I suppose I could see why such an emotion is felt. Sometimes we think that the old days were better that for that matter we wish to hold on to those values. If not that, then we may just want things to work a certain way just purely due to the fact that it was how we experienced things and so thats how we wish to experience it again.
ReplyDeleteThis poem to me, exhibits the emotions of a person who seems to be a very unique individual, living in his or her own world, having nonidentical views and aspirations as those others. It’s as if the individual is stuck in time alone, with the same old values, living in such simplicity that the only thing that matters is solely happiness and focusing on how to be a better person each and every day. Whereas the others are moving forward in time, thriving for other grand desires in life like luxuries and conveniences of a contemporary life. Slowly disremembering their traditional values as the pace of life speeds up. Adding fuel to the fire during conflicts, self-inflicting pain and making life harder than it already is. I think that the poet would like to convey a message of how different lives of the people have become in this modern world, portrayed by describing how life today is too material-centric where people focuses on how to please the public eye and how good it was when people used to live by the old values, living such a simple life by doing good deeds for oneself and others.
ReplyDeleteI think this poem speaks volumes about the current generation. The current, blooming generation is very different compared to the past generations. It is filled to the brim with counts of depression and suppressed emotions. This poem reflects what most of the teenagers now feel or think about themselves. The poem discusses about a person who is struggling to find happiness and peace within themselves. The said writer has expressed that he/she is doubting the little things in life and is unsure of every single decision life gives. The writer says he/she has reflected about countless things that would not be accounted for in later days. In my opinion, thoughts like these are true to the fact that our generation is filled with anxiety and insecurities. It might not seem to be very important to our parents or most adults, but these kinds of thoughts often result in acts of self-harm and even suicide.
ReplyDeletePeople who have thoughts like these find it hard to escape from and are often drowning in their own fears. For example, a friend of mine had these kinds of thoughts. She was a bright and friendly person, but thoughts like these ultimately destroyed her relationships with other people. She would think a lot about the little things she does and it absolutely was terrifying. People didn’t think much about the little things she does, but her anxiety and insecurities would often build up to the point that she would cry or talk about self-harm because of it. People like these have little to no control of their thoughts and it would be hard for us to help fix it. In my opinion, it would be best to help and talk to people if we know they have these kinds of thoughts. However, I think the only person who is able to help handle those thoughts is yourself.
ReplyDeleteWhat I took from reading this poem is that the writer is trying to convey a feeling of disillusioned on life by saying that everything we do is trivial. When you think about it these kinds of thoughts are lingering on the edge of anxiety and depression, you have no sense of belonging and all your hopes and dreams are turning to dust as you become more and more disenchanted with the world. Reading this poem actually made me remember about the movie 'Fight Club' in which the main character is a 9 to 5 business man that spends his whole life collecting Ikea furniture and filling up his wardrobe with fancy suits only for it to be taken away from him one fateful day, and only then did he realize how much his life had been meaningless and mundane. But I don't really believe that being mundane is a bad thing, you don't really plan your life ahead you simply work your hardest, hope for the best and stick with what you got.
